GoFundMe campaign for Black man tackled by VPD raises nearly $20K in one week

Police noticed Moore-Williams, a 6’4 Black man, and decided to issue a jaywalking charge.

According to the GoFundMe page, the encounter escalated to the point where police tackled, kneed, kicked, and eventually tasered Moore-Williams 14 times.

A video of the encounter shows Moore-Williams accusing the police of stopping him because of the colour of his skin. The

officers deny this, telling Moore-Williams they stopped him because he walked in front of a police car. The disturbing footage goes on to show officers tackling Moore-Williams to the ground as he tries to offer his wallet and ID to police with his left hand, as he asks, “Why are you doing this to my arm.” One officer later defends his colleague’s use of force to Moore-Williams’ friend, explaining, “he was resisting arrest.”

“After being brutally beaten by the VPD, Jamiel ended up in hospital where his hands and feet were shackled to the hospital bed,” the GoFundMe page reads. ore than two years after being taken down by Vancouver police over an alleged jaywalking violation, Jamiel Moore-Williams is still seeking justice for an encounter he claims was racially motivated.

Now, as society has begun shining a brighter spotlight on police brutality and systemic racism in recent weeks, a GoFundMe campaign launched by Black Lives Matter Vancouver one week ago to help cover Moore-Williams’ legal costs has raised more than $19,000.

Moore-Williams, a fitness professional and former defensive ends for the UBC Thunderbirds, was walking along Granville Street in downtown Vancouver on Feb. 10, 2018, when he claims he stepped onto the road, crossing the street against the light in an effort to avoid rocks that were being thrown his way “by a person in mental distress.”

UBC Board of Governors chair resigns over “deeply hurtful” social media interaction

he chair of the UBC Board of Governors has resigned following backlash due to his liking "regressive" tweets that the university says are "hurtful to members of our community."

Dogs Supporting Local Kits, packed full of doggy essentials from local pet businesses, is available to purchase through their website. With each kit purchased, dog owners will have the option to donate a kit to a local rescue or pet food bank of their choice.

Study finds depression linked to greater risk of heart disease

P

eople suffering from depression could be at greater risk of heart disease, according to a new study.

The study – published this month in JAMA Psychiatry and co-led by Simon Fraser University (SFU) health sciences professor Scott Lear, along with researchers at universities around the world – found a 20 per cent increase in cardiovascular events and death in people with four or more depressive symptoms.

The risks for cardiovascular disease were more than double for men, and twice as high in urban areas, where the majority of the world’s population will be living by 2050, according to the study.

This suggests that depression should be considered as important as traditional risk factors for heart disease and early death, including high blood pressure, smoking and high

cholesterol, according to the global study, which tracked 145,862 middle-aged participants from 21 countries.

Depression and other mental health issues are widespread in Canada, according to a statement from SFU. One in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem during their lifetime and eight per cent will experience a major depressive event.

Meanwhile, Lear says that experts anticipate COVID-19 will lead to an increase in the number of people dealing with mental health issues.

The data also backs up World Health Organization policies to integrate treatment and prevention of mental disorders into primary care.

According to the study, greater awareness of the physical health risks associated with depression is needed.

For example, researchers suggest a comprehensive approach to tackling non-communicable diseases and mental disorders needs to be a global priority.

'Micro-weddings' at City Hall help couples during COVID-19

ikk kki ki Alexi All xis i and Roni Jones originally imagined their September wedding would include 100 people, including friends and family, and a large celebration.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed that, with gatherings of more than 50 people prohibited across British Columbia.

"It wasn't safe for us," said Alexis, speaking after their wedding ceremony. "We knew we still really wanted to get married this year."

The couple joined others from the area to take part in a City of Vancouver-led "microwedding" on Friday afternoon.

The events, which are booked through the city, feature a handful of witnesses, a commissioner and a photographer.

"I think this is just one of those little ways we can help people who otherwise had to put their fairly extravagant and long-planned plans off," said Melissa de Genova, the city councillor who brought forward the motion to allow weddings at city hall.

De Genova said she was inspired by seeing weddings at city halls in other communities.

She intended to have the ceremonies held inside council chambers with a plan to eventually stage them on the roof to allow for a panoramic shot of Vancouver.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed those plans, with staff working to allow weddings in a plaza in front of city hall.

There are some limits with the city-led ceremony. Only 10 people, including photographers, are allowed to attend and the 30-minute weddings are staggered throughout the day. Interested couples have to bring a marriage licence, hire a wedding commissioner or officiate and bring at least two witnesses.

Another couple — Alexis and Jones — admitted there were some tough discussions about who would be allowed to attend. Those unable to be there in person joined in by Zoom.

"This is certainly smaller, I think we originally planned for 100 people and today we had 10 people," said Jones, who added that he thought the experience was great. "It's certainly a little different than planned."

City staff plan to marry 40 couples outside city hall this summer across five days of weddings.

July 27 has been designated for two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer couples to celebrate Pride.

The weddings can range in style. One couple hired a limo. Another wedding featured a friend showing up with a guitar to serenade the happy couple exchanging their vows.

City staff said they will evaluate if the weddings were a success at the end of the summer and determine if it's a viable project to continue in the future.

While it was difficult to maintain a safe two-meter tw w distance in the sprawling crowd, almost every ryy face donned a mask.

In addition, volunteers gave out mas asks, s gloves and hand sanitizer. There was also a first aid station in the area.

Juneteenth is currently recognized ass a state holiday or special day of observ rvance v in 47 U.S. states, while tech companies Twitter and Square announced this week that they’ve designated the date a company holiday.

How Western Canadian provinces plan to emerge from COVID-19 shutdown

Here is what the provinces in Western Canada have announced so far:

Manitoba

Several restrictions are easing in Manitoba this week.

Restaurants and bars will no longer have to operate at half capacity, however tables will have to be two metres apart or have a physical barrier in between them. Non-smoking bingo halls and video lottery terminal lounges will be allowed to open for the first time in months, at 50 per cent capacity.

Child care centres and retail stores will be able to return to

normal capacity, and people arriving in Manitoba from the other western provinces, northern territories and northwestern Ontario will no longer have to self-isolate for 14 days.

Larger public gatherings will also be allowed as of this week.

Instead of a cap of 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors, people will be able to fill up to 30 per cent of the capacity of any venue as long as they can be split into groups of 50 indoors or 100 outdoors. Each group must be able to enter and exit separately.

On June 1, the province eased a ban on people visiting loved ones in personal care homes. Homes can now offer outdoor visits with a maximum of two guests per resident. Visitors will be screened upon arrival and must practice physical distancing.

Amateur sports and recreation programs, as well as bowling alleys, have been allowed to resume operations.

Saskatchewan

The third phase of Saskatchewan's reopening plan started June 8 with the province lifting a ban on non-essential travel in the north.

More businesses can also reopen, including places of worship and personal care services such as nail salons, tattoo parlours and gyms.

Major festivals and sporting events remain banned, as do nightclubs and amusement parks. Vocal concerts are not being allowed, given that singing carries a higher risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Alberta aims to have students back in classrooms this September though Education Minister Adriana LaGrange says a final decision will be made by Aug. 1.

The provincial government allowed a partial reopening of the B.C. economy starting May 19.

The reopening plans are contingent on organizations and businesses having plans that follow provincial guidelines to control the spread of COVID-19.

Parents in B.C. were given the choice of allowing their children to return to class on a part-time basis starting June 1. The government said its goal is for the return of full-time classes in September, if it's safe.

Under the part-time plan, for kindergarten to Grade 5, most students will go to school half time, while grades 6 to 12 will go about one day a week.

Conventions, large concerts, international tourism and professional sports with a live audience will not be allowed to resume until either a vaccine is widely available, community immunity has been reached, or effective treatment can be provided for the disease.

Happy Canada Day! Popular Canadian border park closed due to 'significant increase' in visitors

P

eace Arch Provincial Park is now temporarily closed due to a staggering spike in the number of park visitors.

The closure came into effect on June 18th, and addresses the public safety and traffic concerns in neighbouring communities due to a significant increase in the number of park visitors.

On April 8, BC Parks closed all provincial parks in response to widespread calls for increased action to address the spread of COVID-19. The Peace Arch Provincial Park reopened on May 14.

Since then, parking lots and local access roads have been overwhelmed with nearly twice the number of vehicles compared to peak days in the summer season, resulting in illegal parking.

Attendance has doubled over the same period compared to last year, leading to an increase in pedestrians along roadways.

According to a release, BC Parks consulted with RCMP, border officials and numerous

local communities. They implemented several measures in order to decrease the numbers of visitors, such as posting signage, and increasing enforcement patrols, installing a permanent gate at the park entrance and reducing park hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. However, the measures have not addressed the risk associated with the significant increases in visitors from both sides of the border.

BC Parks states that it, "understands the importance of unification for families and friends. Through exemptions to the Federal Quarantine Act, the federal government is now allowing immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to enter Canada to be with an immediate family member for a period of at least 15 days, as long as they are asymptomatic of COVID-19 and selfisolate for 14 days on arrival."

The park will reopen when it is deemed safe to do so.

Steve Nash Fitness World rebrands, drops the Steve Nash name B.C.'s iconic gym chain Steve Nash Fitness World plans to rebrand, drop the name of former NBA star Steve Nash and open gyms by early July. The news comes days after a group of new investors agreed to acquire rights to the Steve Nash Fitness World brand – a purchase that BC Supreme Court still needs to approve.

The new owners plan to honour all existing service ag greements with members,, including g pre-paid memberships and personal training services, the company said on June 19. Current members whose memberships have been frozen due to COVID-19 will be able to extend their freeze during the month of July if they so choose, according to the company, which is mired in insolvency procedings.

Chris Smith remains as CxEO. The newly named Fitness World aims to reopen some locations during the first week of July, with full access to the workout floors, group fitness, and small group training sessions. Each location is expected to enforce stringent health and safety measures.

The news that Fitness World has dropped the Steve Nash name likely comes as some relief to the eight-time NBA all-star, and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.

Glacier Media sent requests to interview Nash to his foundation and his publicist but have not yet received a response.

Nash, along with partners Mark Mastrov and Leonard Schlemm, in December 2009, purchased Fitness World – a 13-gym chain that owner Henry Polessky founded in 1978.

Nash later sold his shares to those partners, who also sold the shares. Nash was later stuck in an agreement that said his name could be in the corporate brand. He had a falling out with Steve Nash Fitness World operatives and

launched a lawsuit for breach of contract in October 2016,, aiming g to remove his name from the enterprise. That lawsuit dragged on for years before Nash finally lost.

He then reached an agreement with Steve Nash Fitness World last year, and, in September 2019, he joined the company’s board of directors.

Fitness World's new ownership team has not been publicly revealed, but its members have extensive experience in the fitness industry, according to The Bowra Group, which was appointed as the proposal trustee in the insolvency proceedings of the company officially known as SNFW Fitness.

Under those proceedings, all legal actions against the company – which owes more than $44 million to creditors – are stayed.

SNFW Fitness filed a notice of intention to file a proposal to creditors on April 3. The BC Supreme Court on June 17 then extended the deadline for filing that proposal until August 3. If the company does not file a proposal by deadline, it is deemed bankrupt under federal bankruptcy and insolvency legislation.

Fitness World said it has pledged to donate equipment from closed locations to communities in need, with the goal of supporting widespread access to high-quality fitness equipment that supports exercise and an active lifestyle.

Famed sushi restaurant to honour Anthony Bourdain with special menu

F

or the first episode of the fourth season of his show No Reservations, acclaimed chef, writer, and TV host Anthony Bourdain came to Vancouver.

"It's a foodie town, a chef town, a multicultural city... a proverbial melting pot where the elements don't melt too much and lose distinct flavours," Bourdain said of Vancouver.

It was 2008, and Bourdain spent his time with a trio of Vancouver chefs considered godfathers in their respective cuisines: Pino Posteraro (Cioppino's), Hidekazu Tojo (Tojo's), and Vikram Vij (Vij's) in the episode, with stops to eat at Japadog, Tojo's famed sushi restaurant, and an intimate in-home dinner with his new Vancouverite friends.

Bourdain took his life on June 8, 2018, and while that date each ensuing year has been marked with fond remembrances and tributes, Vancouver's Tojo is focusing on June 25, Bourdain's birthday, to honour his friend and to support mental wellness in the city's hospitality scene.

Tojo will celebrate Bourdain by creating a commemorative omakase experience. The menu will feature items Bourdain tried during his visit to Tojo's along with seasonal specialties and what the restaurant calls "Anthony-approved plates."

Dining omakase-style at Tojo's is a special experience, as the sushi master is considered one of the modern pioneers of the cuisine in North America.

"During the episode, the disciplined motions of Tojo and

his team pair to the joyous clatter from the sushi bar and busting dining room complete with a series of smiles, laughs and conversations, it's so apparent this is what they love doing," the restaurant reminisces, adding: "Some things at Tojo's don't change."

Available for one week only, beginning Thursday, June 25, the omakase menu is priced at $150, with a sake pairing option available to add-on for $38.

BC Ferries adding back sailings on major routes for summer

B

C Ferries is putting more vessels on its major routes to meet summer demand but service will remain below usual levels during what is typically the busiest time of year.

“As the province starts to open up, we believe we will see an increase in our traffic, so that is why we are gearing up,” Deborah Marshall, BC Ferries spokeswoman, said Monday.

The Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay route will be served by two ferries, down from the typical three ships in summer, she said.

At Duke Point-Tsawwassen, summer service will continue with the usual two vessels, and one ferry will serve the Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route.

The summer schedule, in place from July 1 to Sept. 7, adds about 120 sailings per week to the major routes beyond what is now in place.

The new summer schedule is expected to exceed current summer demand by an average of 20 per cent. But some sailings might still be full, so BC Ferries encourages passengers to make reservations and to consider riding at less-busy times.

BC Ferries has a contract with the province to operate the ferry service and the planned summer schedule meets required service levels, she said.

COVID led to BC Ferries to forgo its normal summer hiring plans in March, when about 500 seasonal crew members are typically hired and trained for the busy season.

Ferry vehicle numbers are down by 50 per cent for major routes compared with a typical year. That is an improvement from April, when traffic dropped by 80 per cent.

BC Ferries is losing about $900,000 per day due to a drop in traffic.

When the summer schedule comes into effect, there will be three vessels operating daily between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen.

Normally there are four ferries on that route in the summer, Marshall said.

The corporation said in a statement that it will take two to three years before traffic gets back to levels seen prior to the virus.

Marshall said that’s due to a combination of closed borders, consumer confidence, and loss of income for people who would otherwise travel. However, if borders remain closed, that could prompt more people to travel with BC Ferries, she said.

Prime Minister Trudeau said Monday that there will be no quick opening of borders, as Canada does not want to risk a second wave of the virus.

The province announced late last week that it was stepping in to block BC Ferries’ plans to cut 11 sailings on minor routes.

The $180,000 in provincial money will allow those sailings to continue for now.

BC Ferries has implemented measures to help keep people safe from the virus while travelling, including limiting numbers to 50 per cent passenger capacity.

Passengers on trips longer than 30 minutes must now wear a face covering if they can not maintain a distance to two metres from another person.

Limited food services have been reinstated, with the goal of seeing passengers taking food to their vehicles during the trip.

Transport Canada has extended its permission to allow passengers to sit in their vehicles during crossings.

COVID-19 crisis could mean new form of 'guaranteed income'

“You never wantt to lett a seriious crisis go to waste.”

That’s what Rahm Emanuel, chief of staff to then-incoming U.S. President Barack Obama, once said during the 2008 recession.

A crisis allows an opportunity to do things not thought possible before.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted changes in areas that seemed unheard of just months ago.

For example, the federal government has essentially established a “guaranteed income” that may well become a guaranteed annual income.

Yet the Canada Emergency Relief Benefit will be with us until at least the end of summer and quite likely well beyond that. Millions of people are out of work and the prospect of all those jobs returning in the near future seems bleak at best.

At some point, CERB may be reduced from its current level but there is every reason to think it will become entrenched in our financial aid package for years to come.

On a smaller scale, in B.C. comes

the requiirementt for care workkers at long-term care homes to work at only one facility. The harsh impact of COVID-19 on residents in these facilities necessitated the change and it took months to accomplish, rather than years.

On another health-care front, the B.C. government is allowing people who use drug substances access to safe prescription drugs so they do not access what has become an increasingly toxic supply chain.

Again, such a move would have been fraught with controversy had it been done last year. But in the middle of a pandemic, the policy seems to be seen as compassionate and shrewd by those who may have opposed this kind of policy before the pandemic.

The pandemic crisis is also offering opportunities to “re-think” so much of what we do in so many areas. Working from home may become much more prevalent, which has potentially dire consequences for such things as downtown office towers.

Could some of those towers be converted to, say, social housing?

Our K-12 and post-secondary education systems will both face drastic and fundamental changes to their structures. The challenge here is to ensure these inevitable changes – based on smaller classes and physical distancing measures being in place – have a positive impact and not a negative one.

ransLink customers are now able to collect online deliveries from smart lockers situated at three SkyTrain stations.

PigeonBox, the winners of the 2019 Open Call for Innovation, will operate the smart lockers at JoyceCollingwood, Stadium-Chinatown, and CommercialBroadway stations.

How does it work? First, customers need to sign up to use a locker on the PigeonBox website. Customers can then use the provided PigeonBox address as their mailing address when making any online purchase.

PigeonBox will then deliver your package to the SkyTrain station of your choice. Once the order is complete and delivered, PigeonBox will send you a unique access code for a smart locker. PigeonBox sanitizes the locker and touch screen upon each delivery.

The list goes on.

We will become, by necessity, a larger welfare state. How do we manage that?

Is the pandemic an “opportunity” to address the serious gap in income levels among people? How does fighting climate change fit into all of this?

The pandemic is a crisis, unquestionably. However, it may also lead to some extraordinary changes thought impossible for so long.

Outdoor pools reopening for the summer season

he Vancouver Park Board is opening four outdoor pools, 10 spray parks, and staffing nine Vancouver beaches with lifeguards this summer.

• Wider lanes for length swimming.

• Directional signage, new pool rules, and signage.

According to a release, Kitsilano, New Brighton, and Second Beach pools will open and lifeguards will staff beaches for eight weeks, beginning July 13. Maple Grove pool will also open, but might be slightly delayed while staff configure the online booking system.

Spray parks will begin opening across the city June 27 at the following parks: MacLean, Chaldecott,, Harbour Green,, Grandview,, Has astings, s Oak, Stanley, Prince Edward, Pandora, and Garden.

The Park Board will also have lifegu guards u patrolling and superv rvising v designated swimming areas ass at nine beaches: English Bay, Jericho, Kitsilano, Kii Locarno, Spanish Banks Eas ast s and West, Sunset, Third, and Trout Lake.

Swimming zones at beaches will be marked by new red and yellow flags (instead of buoys that were used in the past), which indicate the area will be superv rvised v and patrolled by lifegu guards u betw tween w 11:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. every ryy day through to September 7.

New safety tyy protocols have been developed for outdoor pool usage and are aligned with Lifesaving Society tyy Canada’s recently released guidelines. gu u Enhanced lifegu guard u protocols have also been developed in conjunction with WorkSafe BC. Outdoor pools will reopen for a combination of designated lap swimming sessions and public swimming sessions. However, people must arrive “swim ready,” ass change rooms will not be open and physical distancing protocols will be in place at entrances and exi xits i and throughout the pools’ facilities.

• Lifeguards will wear personal protection equipment when on duty.

New guidelines at beaches include: • Physical distancing requirements of 2 metres are mandatory for everyone on beaches (lifeguards and community).

Washrooms will remain open for users.

Cas asual s swimmers can book a 90 minute swim block, while lap swimmers can book for a 45 minute swim period. There will be a 30 minute buffer betw tween w swim periods during which time the facilities will be sanitized and prepared for the next group.

The pools will reopen with reduced maxi ximum i capacities, in alignment with new protocols around decreased bathing loads.

Admission to pools will be managed through a combination of an online reserv rvation v system and in-person drop-ins, all with contactless electronic payment. Leisure Access Pas ass s holders will be provided with access to the reserv rvation v system. Park Board Flexi xii pas asses s and cash will not be accepted.

Snorkels and kickboards kii will not be permitted and there will be no rentals of swimming goggles or towels.
