Would people lay down their hard-earned cash to not only secure a sweet piece of art for their walls, but also support local charities?
LAYOUT Jodeen Hodgson
The answer was yes, Heck yes. We’ve since sold hundreds of them, and are currently working on releasing a few new series over the coming months. We launched our “Listen to Nigel” design first, with the blessing of Dr. Bonnie Henry’s expressive sign language interpreter, Nigel Howard. Nigel wanted partial proceeds to go to the Deaf Children’s Society of B.C., and our generous artist Geoff Coates wanted his royalties to go to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. This week we were able to send them thousands of dollars. $3,979 to be exact.

THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2020 VANCOUVER IS AWESOME
VANCOUVERISAWESOME.COM
Re the article: "Man with exposed genitals jumps on car in Vancouver intersection," June 25, 2020 [www.bit.ly/manoncar] I follow Vancouver is Awesome because I enjoy the unique and community-based stories you publish as compared to other news sources. However, I occasionally see stories posted by VIA that are not acceptable for our city. Please stop re-posting comments from “A Safer Vancouver” such as, “Vancouver is NOT safe. Fueled on drugs. This is NOT the type of city we want. Say NO to @kennedystewart @ BC_Housing.” Your articles about drug users perpetuate fear and stigma. Although this is a common perspective, it is extremely harmful. People using drugs or with mental illness, while acting erratically or unusually in public, deserve compas assion s and respect. Their behavior should not be described as scary ryy or dangerous. People may feel uncomfort rtable t or see the behaviour as a nuisance; however, I personally find dru runk u young men downtown on a Friday night to be much more violent and more of a nuisance. Labelling already marginalized folks ass “scary ry” y and “dangerous” only serv rves v to stigmatize and push them furt fu urther t to the margins. STIGMA MA A is unsafe. STIGMA MA A is literally killing kii people in our community ty. y Stigmatized folks in our community tyy avoid healthcare, serv rvices, v and housing. If placed into more “mainstream” buildings or communities, they are likely to feel ostracized and stru ruggle u to maintain their housing. Every ryy person deserv rves v to feel a sense of belonging in their community ty; y your paper is explicitly stating they are not wanted and do not belong. Las ast s summer, I was ass worki king i in a homeless shelter when a large, muscular, bodybuilder
pounded on our door. He said to us, “There is a naked man in the park. He’s tweaking, threatening people, and scaring women. You need to deal with him.” We found that the man was not naked; he was wearing shorts but no shirt (on a hot summer day) and was quietly swaying and dancing on his own in the park. He was calm, happy, and in his own little world. He was not scary or threatening anyone, but rather people were scared and threatened by his “unusual” behavior. Your paper’s words feed into that unreasonable fear. VIA has also published articles complaining about needles in public spaces. Although this poses a potential health risk if poked, those instances are extremely rare. If needles are found, anyone in the public can call the Portland Hotel Society to come and safely remove the needles. Or, the needles can easilyy be collected with a pair of gloves or tongs and placed into an empty tyy plas astic s water bottle. There is no need to panic at the sight of discarded needles. These needles SAVE LIVES, which far outw tweighs w any perceived risk to the public. Consider what you mean by “safer.” Since stigma is killing kii people, pleas ase s think about how your art rticles t erode the safety tyy of these people. Pleas ase s stop publishing words that are stigmatizing and incredibly harmfu ful u to the most marginalized people in our city ty. y If you tru ruly u want a city tyy that is “safer” (i.e. less open dru rug u use, less public intoxi xication, i and less “disru ruption”) u pleas ase s consider support rting t evidence-based solutions that have been proven to address these issues. Stigmatizing and fear mongering produces the opposite effect. This is well stu tudied u and well documented. Above all else, pleas ase s show compas assion s and respect. K. Harrison

Situated at 587 West King Edward Avenue, this "Storybook Cottage" home is a local treasure. Builder Brenton Lea built it in 1942 for William H. James, a CNR foreman and his family. Though it may appear diminutive, the home is actually a 2,906-square-foot three-bed and four-bath residence, including 12-foot vaulted ceilings on the open-concept main floor. There are three fireplaces, a media room, and a backyard patio and beautiful landscaping. The home’s roof is called a “single cedar thatch” or “steam-bent roof” and is meant to re-create the look of a traditional thatched roof. In 2017, the roof undewent extensive - and expensive - repairs. "Awarded a City of Vancouver Heritage Award of Honour in 2017, recognizing the retention and thoughtful restoration of this one-of-a-kind residence." That restoration came after the home was nearly lost in a development deal (and is why the home is considered new as of 2016).

Michael Buble released a Vancouver-inspired playlist
L
ooking for a new playlist to fulfill your listening needs this weekend? Amazon Music and Michael Buble just dropped a new Vancouver-inspired playlist, filled with tracks “from, about and reminiscent” of the Canadian crooner’s hometown. Bonus: You’ll probably know most of the words. The playlist, titled “Vancouver X Michael Buble,” definitely caters to those with mainstream pop-minded taste, but the playlist includes something for everyone, and a ton of nostalgic bangers.
It kicks off with the Lego Movie original “Everything is AWESOME!!!” by Canadian duo Tegan and Sara, featuring The Lonely Island, (It’s fair to assume this track’s title lands it in the “songs about Vancouver” category), before moving into several contributions from famous Canadian artists and bands CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

Vancouver Art Gallery names new director

he Vancouver Art Arrt Gallery ryy has ass tapped a new leader following a yearlong-plus vacancy at the helm.
He led the gallery ryy in Regina since 2014, and was previously the executive and art rtistic t director of Plug In Institu tute u of Contemp porary ryy Art in Winnipeg. “I know how focused [Kiendl] is on continuing and building the gallery’s commitment to Indigenous art and artists, profiling the activities of the Institute of Asian Art, and furthering its local, national and international reputation,” Calbrigo said in a statement.
The June 24 announcement comes after the sudden departure of Kathleen Bartels in May 2019. Bartels had served as the gallery’s executive director for the preceding 18 years and remained on board as a special adviser to interim director Daina Augaitis and board chairman David Calbrigo.
Kiendl will find himself assisting the VAG amid a fundraising campaign to finance a new site in downtown Vancouver, a few blocks east of its long-time home on West Georgia Street.
Dana Claxton, a member of the VAG’s executive search committee, said the gallery received an international response after the opening of the position was made public.
That project is estimated to require $300 million worth of fundraising plus $50 million for an endowment fund, although those figures have not been adjusted for inflation in the last decade.
“We wanted to be sure to consider a broad pool of candidates,” she said in a statement. Prior to being tapped to lead the VAG, Kiendl was CEO and executive director of Saskatchewan’s largest gallery,

In 2008, Amherst was established with the firm belief that all families should have the right to quality and affordable funeral services, without having to sacrifice the dignity or respect of both the dying and the living. Nearly 10 years later, Amherst still operates on the creed that funeral arrangements should be simple, to the point, and free of sales pitches.
“We don’t pressure families,” McFarlane, the owner, funeral director and embalmer of Amherst, said. “When death is imminent, our mission is to allow the families to focus on spending precious time with their loved ones, not to rush them to the funeral home to sign arrangement paperwork and distract them with complicated decisions about costs.”

Vancouver Mural Festival to include expanded 3-week celebration
T
he Vancouver Mural Festival returns this summer with an expanded three-week celebration of murals across the city.
Over the past five years, the VMF has produced over 200 murals in Vancouver and the surrounding area. Now, they say they have re-imagined the celebration to include even more murals.
This spring, the VMF painted over 60 temporary murals on boarded-up storefronts with the #MakeArtWhileApart project. Afterward, the VMF says it received overwhelmingly positive feedback from people who needed to stay hopeful and connected during the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. While people were forced to stay physically distanced, the inspired artwork brought them together through healing, joyful and thought-provoking creations.
month of November 2019 for this summer's festival. That seems like ages ago! In the meantime, we have expanded the festival beyond our original neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant to paint murals in neighbourhoods across the city. This enables more people to celebrate murals within their own communities, while supporting local businesses by encouraging exploration across the city." VMF is organized by Create Vancouver Society, a Registered Non-Profit dedicated to artistic and cultural development in the Lower Mainland. The annual festival takes place for a week in August in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, and VMF works throughout the year with neighbourhoods around the Lower Mainland to highlight the local culture and vibrance of their area. Prospective festival artists can send submission links to the VMF until July 1. The VMF expects numerous applications for the 20-30 additional walls (40-50 walls total).
"Murals can help transform public spaces and serve as catalysts for addressing many sociocultural issues. Together, we can help reignite and connect our communities," writes the VMF in a release.
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted between July and August.

group called the Drug User Liberation Front handed out what they called a “safer” supply of opiates and cocaine in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside to people who use drugs last week. Prior to that, the group held a protest march and rally in the DTES in support of a “real” safe supply of drugs in British Columbia. The protest was created in direct response to a staggering increase in overdose deaths in the province from an ever more toxic drug supply due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May alone, 170 people died of an overdose, topping the previous record of 161 set in December 2016. Of the 170, the presence of fentanyl was detected in 119 cases.
"British Columbia joined the global community in quickly and effectively dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic in order to prevent the deaths of many of its at-risk citizens. Still, those at risk of overdose death have not benefited from the same kind of decisive and definitive action. This discrimination against a vulnerable population, resulting in death on this scale, is unacceptable," state DULF organizers. "Step up and address the issues that are killing us, or allow us access to the resources and funds to do it ourselves, outside of the constraints of this
The group says it wanted to provide a safer supply of opiates and cocaine to residents of the DTES for free. In a release, it states that, "These drugs have been tested via FTIR spectrometry and immunoassay and are free of fentanyl, fentanyl analogues, benzodiazepines and many other harmful adulterants." Currently, heroin and cocaine are not available as part of the Province’s recent Safe Supply rollout. The Drug User Liberation Front says that, "access to these necessary substances is both inadequate and urgently needed." The Province of B.C., the City of Vancouver, and the Vancouver Police Department have all expressed support for and/or called for Safe Supply.

Fraser Health’s chief medical health officer Dr. Martin Lavoie says surging unemployment due to the pandemic has added stress that often leads to a rise in the consumption of illicit substances. like Loverboy, Colin James, Bryan Adams, Doug and the Slugs, David Foster, Nelly Furtado, Trooper and Chilliwack (that band was formed in Vancouver, rather than the Fraser Valley, for the record). The playlist will take you right back to 2005 with the massive hit “Bad Day” by Vernon’s Daniel Powter, before transporting you to 2011 with “Fallout” by Marianas Trench, and 2012 with Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe” - not only is Jepson from Mission, but the hit track was recorded in Richmond! It wouldn’t be a Vancouver-themed playlist without at least one track from Lower-Mainland-based Nickelback. Love them, hate them, or love to hate them, in this case their track “Burn It To The Ground” serves a dual purpose: It also describes some Canucks’ fans’ reaction to the team losing in game seven of the Stanley Cup finals. It also features a track from Vancouver ‘80s new wave rockers The Payolas, a few tunes from jazz pianist and Nanaimo native Diana Krall, while “She’s So High,” the 1999 smash by Victoria-based Tal Bachman (did you know he’s the son of famed Canadian rocker Randy Bachman?) also landed a spot on the list. Of course, the playlist also includes a smattering of Buble’s own songs, including “Love You Anymore,” “I Believe In You,” “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and - you guessed it - “Home.” Check it out at www.bit.ly/bublevancouver

Explor_i_n_g Mountain Peaks and Towns in Southeast¬e¬r¬n BC
Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park Par | Kari Medig
As British Columbians, we seek solace in the mountains, humbled and exhilarated by their magnitude. In eastern BC, dramatic landscapes—with their towering peaks, plunging falls, and charming towns—help us connect with nature on a grand scale. This summer, discover larger-than-life mountains and outdoor adventure in places like Fernie, Revelstoke, and Valemount. While the journey may take longer, the experience will leave you awestruck.
Paddle the calm waterways or navigate raging rapids. Kootenay Lake, home to the world’s largest trout species, is prime for fishing. Tip: hire a guide for insider knowledge. Meanwhile, tee time is served with spectacular mountain views when you golf at one of the 25 championship courses in the Kootenays.
Explore Dramatic Mountain Landscapes Once you’ve been, you know. Mountain ranges in this part of BC are on a different scale. Even the most seasoned adventurist is speechless at the sight of the Rocky Mountains. Mount Robson Provincial Park, home to the largest peak in the Canadian Rockies, is a must-see. This area is home to seven UNESCO-designated parks, including Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. Explore the mountain ranges with a lift-accessed alpine hike, or plan a stay in a backcountry lodge surrounded by ancient peaks.

Enjoy Outdoor Adventures If you love the outdoors, you may have already paid a visit to the Kootenays or Valemount for the abundance of activities. But, once is never enough. From hiking to biking, paddling to golfing, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. With four lift-accessed bike parks (including Golden’s Kicking Horse Mountain Resort) and 600-plus trails, the Kootenays are a mountain biker’s paradise. Whether your ascent is lift- or leg-powered, you can conquer some of BC’s bestknown bike trails, manoeuvring through tight singletrack and wheeling through alpine wildflowers.
A trip to BC’s mountain towns, as wild and vibrant as the nature surrounding them, is a rite of passage for every British Columbian. Tucked into valleys, on shores of rivers, and along old railway routes, communities like Fernie and Cranbrook are pulsing with energy and entrepreneurial spirit. Spoiler alert: the vibe is infectious, if you haven’t already been. As you may have observed, a feverish pursuit of outdoor activities and great coffee are common traits, but each town has its own personality and charm. Swing by a java joint, like Nelson’s Oso Negro, to find friendly faces and a laid-back vibe. Absorb the ethos of each place by visiting Indigenous-owned businesses, exploring historic attractions, popping into boutiques, and meeting interesting characters. In the mountains, a day of adventure almost always ends with an après. Sip craft beer on a sun-drenched patio, and live like the locals do—if only for a short while.

On the West Coast, we know that the province’s fertile valleys are ripe with, well, food and wine. But did you know that the area that stretches from the fields of the Fraser Valley to the vineyards of the Okanagan is also an ideal spot for outdoor play? For every fresh peach that’s devoured, there’s an orchard to cycle through. For every Pinot that’s sipped, there’s a paddle that first needs to be dipped in a cool lake. So, embrace this delectable yin and yang, and rediscover your next great BC adventure.

Road Trip to the Okanagan There are many ways to journey to the Okanagan, and we know them all: the oft-travelled Highway 1; scenic Highway 7; Highway 5/Highway 97, a.k.a. “the fast route”; and Highway 3/Highway 97. But don’t rush along these corridors.

Enjoy Lakeside Adventure
Explore the Fraser Valley In British Columbia, we’re blessed with natural settings that are as fruitful as they are beautiful. Rolling fields, vineyards, and wide-open spaces are all ready for exploration—and adventure. A trip just east of the city to the Fraser Valley is the quickest way to immerse in farm life. Beginning in Langley, you can nibble your way from farm to farm to Abbotsford and beyond—all family-run operations that boast everything from fresh-from-the-garden fruits and vegetables to homemade waffles, ice creams, and ciders. Among the pretty landscapes and grazing cattle, you can ride the rapids during a river-rafting excursion or try your hand at catch-and-release sturgeon fishing near Chilliwack. To understand more about local Indigenous culture, opt for a guided tour of the area’s significant sites.
Spend more than five minutes in BC’s sun-kissed Okanagan, and you know that wine touring, craft breweries, cideries, and meaderies are prime for summer visits. Also prime for warmer months? Hours spent on a boat, swims in hidden coves, and long, leisurely paddles with your pod. Beyond the shorelines, explore the bucolic valleys and the sustainable agritourism that fuel this lakeside lifestyle. Try two-wheeling among the vineyards—a novel way to visit local wineries near Penticton. Hike the Okanagan’s many trails, discover local Indigenous culture near Osoyoos, or visit a family farm for homegrown treats. Another option? Take it all in from a patio at one of the region’s premier winery restaurants. Cheers to that!

UBC study warns wildfire smoke could make COVID-19 symptoms worse
Local News

A
study by University of British Columbia researchers underscores the immediate, harmful health effects of wildfire smoke and says there are concerning implications during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study, published in the online journal Environmental Health Perspectives, explores a link between high levels of fine particulates in wildfire smoke and increased ambulance dispatches.
Vancouver-based group raising money to bring skateboarding to Indigenous communities
A
group of Vancouver-based skateboarders is working to introduce Canada's Indigenous youth to the sport they love and the many benefits associated with it - and they're asking for the public's help to do so. Nations Youth Society launched earlier this year, with the goal of "empowering Indigenous youth to embrace their right to selfdetermination through the positive impact of skateboarding." In addition to encouraging the importance of keeping Indigenous culture and traditions alive, the Indigenous-led organization - backed by skateboarders Joe Buffalo (a residential school survivor, actor and pro skater), Rose Archie, Tristin Henry, Dustin Henry and Adam George - is also providing skateboarding lessons to Indigenous youth and working to promote the construction of more skate parks in First Nations communities. You might remember a few of these names from the time they organized All Aboard, a two-day celebration of skateboarding culture in Vancouver that took place in November. The event examined skateboarding's impact on mental health, social awareness and education. But with three upcoming trips planned to Indigenous communities in Alberta this summer, Nations decided to launch a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to cover costs like car rentals, gas, per diems for instructors, lodging, and safety equipment for
The research shows a jump in ambulance dispatches related to respiratory or cardiovascular conditions occurs within one hour of exposure to smoke. Among diabetics, the study says the odds of health complications increase within 48 hours of exposure to fine particulates.
participants. The campaign has already been a massive success, nearly fulfilling its $10,000 goal in less than a day.
The researchers say the smoke has the potential to make viral respiratory infections such as COVID-19 even more severe.
“The purpose of Nations is to inspire and empower youth to follow in their dreams. Skateboarding has done so much for us, and we want to show the kids what’s possible," Archie told V.I.A.'s sister publication Alaska Highway News in January, prior to a Nations trip to Fort St. John.
Lead author Jiayun Angela Yao says rapid public health action to limit smoke exposure is vital because the pandemic remains a serious threat as the wildfire seas ason s approaches.
“My sister committed suicide last February, and that got me thinking of reaching out to communities and doing more for our people. It’s important that kids grow up to be proud of their culture and who they are,” she said at the time. Archie, who grew up near Canim Lake, B.C., recalled that she would have to hitchhike up to two hours a day in order to get to the nearest skate park. One reason why she and the other Nations volunteers are working to see more skate parks built near First Nations communities - and to make skateboarding more accessible to Indigenous youth - is to ensure that the next generation of First Nations skateboarders can avoid experiencing the same dangers Archie faced. Ahead of their upcoming trips, Nations is also on the lookout for new or used boards, trucks and wheels.
"An Anyone n with pre-exi xisting i heart rtt and lung diseas ase s and diabetes is especially vulnerable vu u and should consider purchasing air cleaners and ensuring that they have adequate supplies of medication at home," Yao said in a releas ase. s "It's alarming to see just how quickl kly l fine part rticulate t matter seems to affect the respiratory ryy and cardiovas ascular s system. And An n the acute effects for people with diabetes is relatively new to us," said Yao. She conducted her research while completing a PhD at the UBC School of Population and Public Health. Researchers used statistical modelling to examine ambulance dispatches, paramedic assessments ass and hospital admissions for respiratory ry, y circulatory ryy and diabetic conditions related to high levels of fine part rticulates t during wildfire seasons in B.C. from 2010 to 2015.

Your guide to exploring the best of Vancouver's under-appreciated parks
W
ith summer travel limited, it’s a good time to reconnect with Vancouver’s own offerings for rest and relaxation.
An afternoon in a local park makes for a quick getaway that’s easy on the gas tank. Vancouver has over 230 designated park spaces, representing 11% of the city’s land.
The crown jewel that every tourist and local sees is, of course, Stanley Park. The main beach parks such as English Bay Kitsilano and Spanish Banks are also well-used, much appreciated spaces. But which of the others deserve a stop for a little respite or recreation while offering greater ease for social distancing? Other destination parks are only a short drive or a bike ride away.
New Brighton Park
From the parking lot, walk through a colourfully graffitied tunnel to the park. It’s a great backdrop for your selfies or simply a wonderful canvas for new posts to Instagram. While the outdoor pool remains closed until July 13, the park remains a great place to picnic, to let Fido loose in the spacious, fenced in off-leash dog area or to walk along the water and take in the view of the Ironworkers’ Memorial Bridge.
Plateau Park/Hastings Park
Get active! This gem, tucked behind the PNE/Playland grounds offers plenty to do even as the roller coasters within view remain silent. It’s got four beach volleyball courts, a soccer field with a surrounding track, ping pong tables, a parkour course, a bike skills area, an accessible playground, perimeter biking and walking paths and a skateboard hangout.
Renfrew Ravine Park
Not to be confused with nearby Renfrew Community Park, this serene sliver of a park makes the most of Still Creek and its corresponding ravine. On the north side of East 29th Avenue is a newly fenced off-leash dog park but the main draw attraction is the shaded walkway hugging the creek. On the south side of 29th, a newly built stairway leads down to another stretch of
the creek and a short boardwalk. Two benches at the end offer a place stop and sit in quiet contemplation but nearby rocks provide an even closer vantage point to take in the aptly named creek.
Memorial South Park
The treed boulevard leading to the parking lot off 41st Ave conjures up an approach to a French chateau but the rest of the park is function over style. This is a place that covers the bases in terms of sporting surfaces, with two baseball diamonds, a track, a lacrosse court, a soccer field, and four tennis courts. To bring the heartbeat back down, there’s a thicket of grand red cedars and, elsewhere, a marshy pond with nearby picnic tables.
Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
Here’s a Chinatown treasure, perhaps the most culturally rich of all parks overseen by the Vancouver Parks Board. (Admission to the adjoining Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden costs about $15, depending on the season.) With willows, bamboo, craggy rocks, pagodas and a pond dotted with lily pads and filled with koi, this photo-ready site will make you feel a world away. Both the free and paid portions of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens are currently closed but will reopen July 3
Langara Golf Course Perimeter Path
This is the place to get your greens, especially from midsummer until the rains of fall, a time when Vancouverites let their lawns turn to wheaten hues. Comprising the perimeter of the city’s public Langara Golf Course, this 2.7-kilometre loop offers beautiful views of the landscaped golf course from shaded stretches of a wooded trail. It’s perfect for a brisk walk or an extended chat with a friend. Travel two or three laps and then retreat to the clubhouse patio for a different well-deserved draft beer and a basket of yam fries.
Douglas and Heather Parks
With just a block separating the two, they can be viewed as one wonderful space that creates a thriving neighbourhood feel between Oak and Cambie. This is another place to work your endorfins, accessing Heather Park’s tennis courts, or playing soc-
cer or baseball or jogging the perimeter path at Douglas Park. A new wood-feature playground including a playhouse and tree platform at Douglas Park only adds to the appeal of this area.
Charleson Park
A great stopping point in False Creek between Olympic Village and Granville Island, this is a place to take in the marine and mountain views while dodging dogs. Although the playground spaces are undergoing a renovation, the sea wall here is much improved with separate bike and pedestrian paths. Few people walk the small forested trail area farther away from the water and an oft-overlooked highlight is the lagoon, a great locale for watching and photographing herons, Canada geese and ducks. Even your sea-gull-perched-on-a-rock shots will look amazing.
The “finger parks” of Point Grey
Between Kits Beach and Jericho Beach, there are seven smaller waterfront parks, welcome places of solitude and play, on land that could easily have been sold off and overtaken by multi-million dollar mansions. Thankfully, these lots have been set aside, reserving prime views for the general public, too. Each park may become its own personal favourite. The most developed of the septet is Hastings Mill Park, with marina and West Vancouver views, an upgraded, log-made playground, and an enlarged open frame structure to create your own photo op. Enrich your sense of local history at the (still-closed) Hastings Mill Museum, once a general store, relocated by barge from its downtown location where it survived the Great Fire of 1886.
Deering Island Park
This one’s a small space, but, hey, it’s an island without the crowds you’d find on Granville Island. Watch the boat traffic navigate the Fraser River, forage on wild blackberries when in season and stroll the path just north of the park where you might encounter horses or, at the very least, um,...evidence of them. A good alternative for the similar views is the dog-friendly Fraser River Park. View the entire guide at www.bit.ly/awesomeparksvancouver By Gregory Walters

Coast Mental Health | Courage to Come Back
Corey Hirsch advocates for mental health awareness by sharing his personal struggles to shatter stigmas In 1994, Corey Hirsch was at the top of his rising career as a professional hockey player. Then in his early twenties, he had won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics for Team Canada’s men’s hockey team and was a NHL player to watch as the goalie for the New York Rangers. One day, he was out for a run with teammates when he began experiencing the first of many panic attacks that would shape the rest of his life. “Something in my brain, simply put, broke. I had a heinous thought, one that I did not want in my brain. It kept repeating over and over. The more I tried to push the thought away the more it would repeat and get stronger and louder. The anxiety and panic that came with these thoughts was debilitating. The same thoughts would plague me for the next 3 years, relentlessly, every second of every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” As a pro sports player, Corey struggled with feeling unable to speak up to his coaches or teammates. At the time, the culture in professional sports then was not conducive for athletes to be sharing weaknesses of any kind, both physical or mental. It goes without saying that it was unthinkable to ask for help with a mental health problem. Undiagnosed and untreated for many years, the severity of his mental illness eventually escalated to the point where he could no longer hide it. When Corey was traded to the Vancouver Canucks, his symptoms became debilitating, and to the point where he was contemplating suicide. When it ultimately became impossible for him to play, he finally admitted to his team he needed help and he was finally sent to a psychologist who immediately diagnosed him. “My illness was now visible, and I could no longer hide it. I felt like the options were to either
kill myself or get help. I reached out to a trainer who connected me with a therapist. Within minutes, the therapist diagnosed me with obsessive compulsive disorder. Finally, what I had been suffering from had a name.”
During COVID-19, Corey Hirsch has been continuing the online discussion of mental health by working with mental health professionals and therapists to conduct interviews with former players on Facebook Live.
After the initial diagnosis, it would be 10 years and 6 therapists later that Corey would succeed in finding the correct treatment to turn his life around. Ultimately, the experience ended his NHL career earlier than may have otherwise been possible. In 2017, Corey was invited to share his experience of mental illness on The Players Tribune. His personal essay “Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark” is viewed by many as the story that opened up the issue of mental health in sports. Due to people like Corey speaking out, many other athletes have now opened up about their own mental health struggles, offering the sports community a place to feel supported in asking for help. “The platform I have, it would be selfish to not use it for good. And the platform that The Players Tribune uses to let players tell their stories amplifies that. They've done an incredible job with giving people a voice to issues that are needed to be heard.” Corey has since devoted himself to mental health advocacy in the public sphere. With openness and authenticity, he gives his time to spreading awareness by sharing his lived experiences during speaking opportunities. He is genuinely committed to helping break down the stigma around mental health by promoting awareness and acceptance for those suffering from mental illness and encouraging others to get an early diagnosis and treatment. “We’ve hid and stigmatized this massive issue of mental health for so long. There isn’t a person out there with a perfect brain, but we expect

people to have perfect brains. That’s not fair. That’s not human. We’re imperfect people. So people ended up going into hiding for their anxiety and depression. Corey feels this is the most important work of his lifetime, connecting with diverse people of all ages in sport, in the community, and across Canada, about the importance of mental health. “Nothing compares to the feeling you get from helping people who are struggling. It trumps any win I’ve had in my professional hockey career. He often travels to high schools to give presentations on his personal mental health challenges when playing in the NHL. His relatable stories, message of resilience, and personable demeanour garners a lot of respect from youth. In normalizing the discussion of mental health, Corey allows students to feel comfortable having conversations about mental health without the barrier of shame. “Recognition about bipolar, depression, anxiety, and OCD leads young people to getting treatment, instead of the alternative of experiencing years of suffering before seeking help.
“Mental health has finally gotten the attention it needed to get fifty years ago. Unfortunate that it’s taken a pandemic to accomplish that. Eventually, this too is going to blow over too. Eventually we will get through this.” With our society starting to talk more openly about our experiences with mental illness, we have an opportunity to be there with love and support for our family and friends dealing with mental health issues. As Corey shares, it’s all about being there for them. “Let people know that you’ll listen, that you care, that if they want to get help, you’ll help them. That you’re available. That you’re not going to judge them. It’s all about listening without judgment and being a safe person to talk to.” Corey’s story shows that none of us are immune to mental health issues. His is a story about the power of diagnosis and treatment that enables one to be able to participate fully in life. Ultimately, Corey envisions a day when we can live in a world where it doesn’t need to be discussed. The awards celebration is a major fundraiser for Coast Mental Health, which believes that, through compassionate care and support, everyone can recover. This year, instead of the in-person gala, Coast Mental Health is celebrating Courage To Come Back Month in July. 18 local grocery stores are now growing their own produce and herbs
I
t's harvest time at a few small urban farms in Metro Vancouver, but these aren't the fields or green spaces you might be imagining.
The crops of herbs and veggies in question are actually part of a new modular or vertical farming platform called Infarm that is installed in 14 Safeway and 4 Thrifty Foods locations in Vancouver and neighbouring communities. These in-store growing units are the source of fresh foods that are available for purchase, right there where they're grown. Parent company Sobeys Inc. brought the Infarm system to stores this spring, and are now expanding the program. "Each vertical farming unit is a standalone ecosystem, enabled by machine learning and AI technology that creates an optimal environment required for produce to grow and flourish," explains a media release from the grocer's head office. The Infarm vertical systems use 95 per cent less water, 90 per cent less transportation and 75 per cent less fertilizer than industrial agriculture.
There are different items being grown at each grocery store location in Metro Vancouver, but crops include lettuce, baby kale and herbs such as basil, cilantro, mint and parsley. The
products retail for $2.49.

The Berlin-based business has their state-of-the-art growing units in place around the world, including in Seattle, London, and Copenhagen.

In Canada, Sobeys says they will soon expand with Infarm to install the vertical farms in stores in Victoria and Toronto.
Here is where you can find the modular farms operating in Metro Vancouver stores operated by Sobeys, along with harvest dates.

Vancouver is getting its first all-cider taphouse restaurant
V
ancouver will soon be home to a new restaurant that's all about those beautiful B.C. ciders.
The Cider House is prepping to open at 1602 Yew Street in Kitsilano. The cider-focused spot has moved into the space previously home to Basil Pasta Bar. (Basil's original Davie Street location remains open.) With 20 taps set to pour chiefly ciders made right here in B.C., The Cider House will be the city's first full-serve restaurant that's focused on the popular beverage.
For eats, the new spot is promising a menu of healthy food. There will be light bites and snackable items like fresh rolls, bowls, and chips and dips starring an array of vibrant, colourful fresh produce. With finishing touches left to put on the space and final okays from civic powers that be, The Cider House says they are aiming to have this new "community oasis" by next week. Follow them on Instagram at @vancitycider for the latest. By Lindsay William-Ross
In addition to the ciders, The Cider House will be pouring local craft brews, wine, and kombucha. They'll even have mead, a wine-like fermented drink made from honey.

identify as women, trans and/or femme join our community, and we want to continue to reduce barriers for anyone interested in trying out comedy,” Hill added.
This summer, that means inviting anyone who identifies as Black, Indigenous and/or a person of colour to take their first digital improv or sketch comedy class for free, throughout July and August.
The release stated, “Because the Vancouver comedy scene is our focus as a company, our first priority is welcoming as many BIPOC who live in the greater Vancouver area as possible.”
“We are already seeing a wonderful range of people in our classes at Blind Tiger, but there is still work to ensure our classes represent the city we’re in,” said Tom Hill, Blind Tiger Comedy’s co-director, in a release.
However, if spots are still available by June 29, the company said it will “happily welcome students from anywhere in the world.”
Since launching in December 2013, Blind Tiger Comedy has been providing performance-driven improv, sketch, and stand up classes to aspiring Vancouver comics. The comedy school is a collaboration between two renowned local improv groups, Hip.Bang! and The Sunday Service.

While Blind Tiger has previously made several efforts to support a variety of voices in comedy through diversity and financial aid scholarships, as well as its Women-TransFemme and POC Nights, this additional measure comes as businesses across all industries strive to do more to encourage diversity in the wake of widespread social outrage. “Last year’s Welcome saw over 70 people who
Blind Tiger offers several different levels of classes suitable for a wide range of experiences. While there is room reserved in each class for new students, Blind Tiger notes that most first-time students will fit most comfortably into its “Intro to Improv” course. In addition, Blind Tiger's summer programming also features an exclusively BIPOC Intro 1 class, led by instructor Ronald Dario, in an effort to not only hear marginalized voices, but to actively create a safe space to welcome them into the school’s classes. Those interested in taking Blind Tiger Comedy up on its offer can visit blindtigercomedy.ca, select which class they’d like to join, and fill out a quick form. All spots are first come, first serve. Norman was born and raised in North Vancouver and was proud of it. Although Norm struggled with mental health, he led an adventurous life attending concerts, riding his motorcycle across North America, hiking, swimming in oceans, and cycling. With his handsome looks, impeccable style and quick wit, he brought a ready smile to many faces. He was eloquent with his words, and could just as easily bring one to tears or roaring laughter. His fierce tough guy exterior did not shield his tender, generous soul and heart of gold. He will be greatly missed, as will his famous phone messages. In lieu of flowers please donate to the CMHA, https://cmha.bc.ca/ or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Ranbir Mann for his care and kindness toward Norman. We would also like to thank the staff, nurses and Doctor’s at Alexander Street Community. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
