The PNE has always been weird and wonderful

t goes without saying that the summer of 2020 - heck, all of 2020 - will go down as one of the strangest on record.
MANAGING EDITOR Lindsay William-Ross lindsay@vancouverisawesome.com CVA 180-4254
With COVID-19 restrictions in place, businesses are finding their footing and events are either being canceled altogether or adjusted. The Vancouver Canadians’ baseball season will not go ahead. Vancouver will not be a “hub city” for the NHL playoffs. The Celebration of Light fireworks displays are canceled. However the Pacific National Exhibition is still forging ahead with their 110th summer at Hastings Park. With a series of small drive-through events under their belt, they’ve announced that they’ll be providing British Columbians with the full experience this year, “albeit in an unconventional fashion.” Playland is now open, and a drive-through PNE experience will follow. There will be Superdogs, agricultural exhibits and more. We’ll bring you more information on it when it becomes available. “Unconventional” is not a new approach for the PNE; in fact attending it has always been a weird and wonderful experience. This year it will be even moreso. Over the past few days I took the time to dig through nearly 10,000 PNE photographs from the City of
Vancouver Archives, dating back to the 1930s, in order to put together a gallery for you to enjoy while you wait for this year’s exhibition to begin. From oddball display booths to bizarre clowns and wacky stunt performers and mascots, it’s a stroll down memory lane. Check it out at www.bit.ly/pneweird, then look forward to experiencing the fair from a safe distance at this year’s drive-through.

4 new Vancouver restaurants to put on your must-try list
H
ungry for something new to try? Vancouver's dining scene moves fast, and even during a pandemic restaurants are getting their doors open and dishing up dine-in and take-out eats across the city. With a bunch of fresh openings in recent weeks, here are four new Vancouver restaurants to try right now.
Pizzeria Grano
3420 Main Street Plant-based pizza is now coming out of the wood-fired oven in the former Don't Argue space. Grano is the work of the crew from Via Tevere, so you know you're going to get the real deal. They've got a menu of fully plant-based Napoletana-style pizza, like a fiery "Diavola," or a veg loaded "Pesto." They opened their doors officially on July 9.
Takenaka
1370 Georgia Street Recently launched out of the Coho Commissary space in East Vancouver, Takenaka specializes in beautiful Japanese sushi and bento boxes, including deluxe platters. Order online for pick-up or delivery, or hang tight until they get their truck rolling. Plans are in the works to offer on-site dining at a temporary patio at the commissary, too.
The Cider house
1602 Yew Street Vancouver is now home to a new restaurant that’s all about those beautiful B.C. ciders - the city’s first full-serve restaurant that’s focused on the popular beverage. In addition to the ciders, The Cider House will be pouring local craft
brews, wine, and kombucha. They’ll even have mead, a wine-like fermented drink made from honey. On the menu, a plant-centric set of casual, healthy dishes, like salads, bowls, and light snacks.
Blind Rabbit
2531 East Hastings Street Blind Rabbit opened this spring and is the newest member of a family of food and drink spots co-owned by Nigel Lutz and Rob Clarke - there's The Yard Cafe on Granville and The Brighton, a close neighbour on East Hastings. In addition to cocktails, Blind Rabbit has a menu of casual bites, featuring things like "The Cure," a sandwich featuring salami and cheese with organic greens grown at UBC farms and mustard. Plan on five-day school week in fall for K-7, education minister says

week, with Grade 8-12 instruction two days a week.
Fleming did not directly explain what the plan for Grade 8-12 would look like in September, but did say the province is working from its restart planning document.
An announcement about the new school year is expected in about three weeks, Fleming said.
Fleming said last Wednesday a provincially appointed steering committee that includes teachers, support staff, unions, principals, vice-principals and parent organizations is ironing out plans to have as many kids back in school as possible.
The ministry has a five-phase restart plan for September, ranging from no in-class instruction to full class instruction (Stage 1).
“There is an awful lot of planning going on with every major stakeholder in the education system to have a safe full restart to the school system,” said Fleming, adding the approach will be based on how the province continues to manage coronavirus transmission rates.
The school year ended in June in “Stage 3” — a part-time reopening that saw K-5 students return to school up to three days a week and the rest one day a week (with five-day instruction available to children of essential service workers and those requiring additional supports). The balance of learning was online.
“Parents should plan accordingly that in September we will see
Stage 2 in the document would see K-7 instruction five days a
The health and safety protocols and “exact bell to bell schedules” will come through school districts and individual schools, but the broad direction will come from the province, said Fleming. For immune-compromised students, parents can start to plan for special accommodations with individual schools and districts, he said. “I would encourage parents to contact principals and viceprincipals and teaching staff and district staff to make those kinds of arrangements.” By Cindy E Harnett

Proposed New InflationAdjusted Development Contributions and Associated Amendments On July 21, 2020, City Council will review an annual report which recommends new inflationadjusted Density Bonus Contribution rates for referral to a Public Hearing in September 2020. A similar report on Development Cost Levies (DCLs) and CAC Targets is being considered on July 22, 2020. DCLs are fees collected by the City of Vancouver from all new development. CAC Targets are contributions provided by property developers when City Council grants development rights through rezoning. Density bonusing is a zoning tool that permits additional floor space in exchange for amenities and affordable housing. City Council will also be reviewing a recommended adjustment to the Little Mountain Adjacent and Southeast False Creek CAC Targets. These fees help pay for amenities such as parks, affordable housing, childcare centres, libraries, community centres, transportation and other infrastructure that meet the needs of our growing city. If approved, new rates would come into effect on September 30, 2020. MORE INFORMATION: Chris Clibbon, 604-873-7237, chris.clibbon@vancouver.ca; vancouver.ca/financegrowth

Matchstick coffee owners breaking ties with business following allegations of workplace abuse
T
he co-owners of Vancouver's Matchstick coffee are stepping completely away from their business in the wake of public allegations from ex-employees who have shared details about the cafe and roastery's toxic work environment.
The former employee concludes by saying the staff are "treated as expendable objects rather than human beings," adding Spencer Viehweger "is a bully and their behaviour continues to perpetuate a toxic culture of misogyny, intimidation and silence."
In an Instagram post shared on the Matchstick account, co-owner Spencer Viehweger says he resigned July 9, and that he and his wife, co-owner Annie Viehweger, "will be divesting ourselves from all shares of Matchstick Coffee Inc," adding that "effective immediately, both of us have stepped away from our roles in the company."
The manipulation Christ - and ultimately a legion of other ex-staffers - zeroes in on begins from the top down at Matchstick, and its co-owner, Spencer Viehweger.
Spencer Viehweger, who launched Matchstick in 2012, has been singled out in a series of posts on social media from exemployees. Those accounts of workplace trauma have been steadily shared out on an anonymously-run Instagram feed called @notourmatchstick since early last week. The public outcry about Matchstick and Spencer Viehweger was kicked off when former Commissary Manager Leah Christ shared her experiences on her personal Instagram account. Christ says she witnessed "intimidation tactics," and saw "verbal threats" to a supplier's employee in an e-mail. She notes she was offered a raise on the condition it would mean a drop in pay for supervisors, and that her reports about a manager making racist remarks and sexual passes at staff went ignored. Christ says the final straw was her having to decline taking a business meeting about partnership at the Viehweger's private home, and then being told doing so embarrassed Spencer Viehweger and had him reconsidering partnership altogether.
Among the incidents brought to light include one staff member being fired on the phone during a casual conversation about movie-watching; a baker being told to come in sick; Spencer's use of Christianity to manipulate employees; staffing and scheduling woes; management's inaction on serious concerns at the cafes including safety; beratings in front of colleagues; missing pay; poor working conditions; being put on duties below training and skill levels; and register discrepancies being balanced by removing money from staff tips, to name a few. Many former employees use terms like "toxic" and "manipulative," to describe the environment, and chronicle physically and emotionally demanding labour with lack of support from the top down. Several point to sexist, racist, and misogynistic behaviour. Last Wednesday, via an Instagram post, Matchstick said Spencer Viehweger would be "stepping away from his inperson roles" at the business "to make space for the group to process and heal from these events." The coffee roaster says they have brought on an external human resources company to facilitate an examination of internal operations, including creating "space for our staff to

speak up and share their concerns." However, the postings to the @notourmatchstick account continued, and numerous commenters - many indicating they would no longer be patronizing the cafes or purchasing Matchstick coffee as a result of the allegations - responded that the company's words rang hollow and did not indicate real change. In Spencer Viehweger's signed post on Thursday, however, he indicates he has "sought immediate professional care" to address his behaviour. "It is clear that my actions have caused pain and grief in the lives of Matchstick employees," said Viehweger. "I am truly sorry to end this relationship in a way that is marked with so much suffering." Details of the "divestment" have not been revealed, and Viehweger notes that the company is seeking new leadership. By Lindsay William-Ross

Calling people who worked at a coffee shop under toxic management “survivors” is insensitive and lacks awareness
O
ver the last several weeks, my Instagram timeline has been a myriad of socially empowered, politically charged posts and re-shares. Call outs and call ins, infographics and think pieces, cries to defund the police and questions on where to begin unlearning the inherent racism woven into the fibres of our communities. Amidst the online chaos - which as a queer Black woman I have found both empowering and exhausting - I stumbled upon @notourmatchstick, an account created to expose the mistreatment that far too many staff endured while employed at the coffee shop Matchstick.
I read through the stories shared on the page. I watched as friends of my own shared their experiences of mistreatment at this coffee shop. I could not deny that their workplace sounded incredibly toxic and yet, something felt off to me. This call out was happening off the momentum of a civil rights uprising. This timing shouldn’t be ignored. It follows a historical pattern of white women co-opting movements first led by BIPOC folks. The call out effort is happening as it is, not in tandem with, but because of the conversations held by Black and Indigenous people, detailing the violence they have experienced and the companies that were complicit. What I’m seeing is predominantly white women using this opportunity to tell their own stories of misogyny and manipulation in the workplace. This is similar to what we see in first wave feminism, and more modernly within the #metoo movement. The bio of the @notourmatchstick page read “for those who survived matchstick”. To call people who worked at a coffee shop under terrible management “survivors”, reads to me, and many other BIPOC folks who reached out to me, as insensitive and lacking in awareness. To speak of survival at a time when the murders of Black people are being broadcast across mainstream media, in a country built on historical and ongoing Indigenous genocide, suggests to me a lack of critical analysis. Some white people even asked Matchstick for “reparations”. This is the co-opting of language used by Black activists in a context where it is not at all fitting. Though of course not all of the employees of Matchstick are white, I couldn't find any posts that acknowledged the ways in which queer, trans and Black, Indigenous and people of colour face disproportionately higher levels of work place violence. I’m wondering if those who are engaging in the sharing and reposting have considered the implications of choosing now to express the harm that they have experienced, in a moment where BIPOC folks have risked their physical safety doing so first. Why now? What is the climate? Who cultivated it? How are you

benefiting from it? I am not discrediting anyone’s experience of harm. I am not undermining trauma. I think that our communities become stronger when abusive men step down from power. With that said, I think it is imperative that the work of dismantling harmful power structures is done while still acknowledging the moment when our call outs ultimately centre whiteness, with little acknowledgment of privilege. My main issues are with the timing and the language used. This is not an attack but a criticism of what is truly patterned behaviour. I am not asking that the account be deleted, and I am not asking for people who have been harmed to stop seeking accountability. But I am asking that collectively, we engage in a higher level of self-reflection when speaking out in ways that may further silence marginalized voices. By Shanique Kelly

Coast Mental Health | Courage to Come Back
Rumana Monzur overcame profound obstacles to fulfill her commitment towards fighting for justice
R
umana Monzur is the 2020 Courage to Come Back award recipient in the Physical Rehabilitation category.
Rumana Monzur has faced challenges that no one should have to endure. The challenges began with partner violence. In 2011, when visiting her native home of Dhaka, Bangladesh to finalize her divorce from her abusive husband, Rumana was severely attacked at his hands to the point of needing to undergo facial reconstruction through plastic surgery. Also as a result of the domestic violence encounter, she was left completely blind. Just one month after that traumatic event, she started over again in Vancouver with her daughter and her elderly parents. “It was a very tough time but we got through it as a family. From my parents to my relatives, they never made me feel that I was a different person because I wasn’t able to see. My friends never left me alone when I needed support and never treated me differently. All of those factors combined gave me the strength to see myself as the same person.” While adjusting to her new reality, she had to learn how to navigate a sighted world as a blind person, including relearning essential skills such as navigation, reading, and writing. While finishing her Master’s at UBC, Ru-
mana was inspired by a new ambition. After a formative interaction with a blind law student at UBC, Rumana became intrigued over the possibility of practicing law as a blind person. Rumana’s determination succeeded as she was accepted into law school right before completing her thesis. Then came the challenge of learning how to navigate this new territory with a disability. “It felt like I jumped into the Avrinder Dhillon ocean without knowing how to swim. For the past 20 years, the Courage To Come Back Awards have raised more than $18.5 million for Coast Mental Health to support people recovering from mental illness in the Lower Mainland, through housing, support services and employment. The awards celebration is a major fundraiser for Coast Mental Health, which believes that, through compassionate care and support, everyone can recover. Here is what is considered a 'mass gathering' under B.C.'s new COVID-19 restrictions
W
hile it might seem odd that Playland is open under COVID-19 restrictions, the Province of British Columbia has given the amusement park the green light to open its gates.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has ordered that no more than 50 people may gather at mass events, regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor. However, Playland isn't considered an event, but rather a 'facility.' Henry tells Vancouver Is Awesome in a press briefing that there has been a great deal of confusion over what constitutes an event versus a gathering. "There is a difference between events, where people go for a period of time in one area, versus going to a hardware store or a grocery store that's quite large where people are in and out. They’re not with each other gathering and doing specific things," she said. "It is confusing, I know. We are revising our guidance to

try and make that clear but it doesn't generally apply to where you have small groups of people doing things in specific settings." With that said, Henry notes that the rules are applied on a 'case-by-case' basis. For instance, restaurants are restricted to groups of six people, and they must maintain physical distance from other people or barriers must be in place to ensure safety. She emphasizes that there is a fundamental difference between people coming together for a specific reason versus people coming in and out of restaurants or stores. In June, organizers of Canada's first-ever drive-in music festival, Summerset Benefit Concert, cancelled the event due to the new COVID-19 restrictions introduced in May. This year’s Summerset Music & Arts Festival event was created in an effort to comply with public health officials’ physical distancing guidelines. However, the Province restricted events with gatherings of 50 people to include
Of course, a number of people have pointed out that attendees would be in their own vehicles, and therefore distanced from other people. Further, organizers said that each vehicle would have had a designated spot that adhered to social distancing regulations. Playland is now open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and all tickets must be pre-purchased for specific dates and time slots. Tickets are available for mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and afternoons from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Mass Gatherings Events Public Health Act does not apply to the presence of workers at a worksite when engaged in their work activities, or to customers in a mall or retail establishment. It also does not apply to individuals attending an episodic vending market or to individuals at a campsite, in a park or at any other outside location when not attending an event. By Elana Shepert
City of Vancouver awards $8.7 million in grants for social housing
T
he City of Vancouver has awarded $8.7 million in grants to four social housing projects using money from its Community Housing Initiative Program, which is funded by the city's empty homes tax.
The grants that council approved July 7 will add to investments from multiple partners to build 269 social housing units. They are the first grants that the city has provided from the program. Recipients include: • Finnish Care Home ($890,000);
• Salvation Army ($910,0000; and • Aboriginal Land Trust and Lu’ma Aboriginal Housing Society ($6,255,000). “Providing more affordable homes across Vancouver is council’s top priority and with these grants – the first from the new program funded by the empty homes tax – a proposed housing project is more likely to attract funding from other partners, including more senior levels of government,” said Vancouver mayor Kennedy Stewart in a release. The Community Housing Initiative Program has about $25 million and is funded by the empty homes tax as well as from the city's capital budget.
• Lee’s Senior Housing ($655,000);

Plan a getaway in the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. Stop in Squamish for craft cider and casual al fresco dining. Whistler—celebrated for its lively après scene—is also a foodie haven. You can do it all: sip BC wines and slurp local oysters; tuck into decadent goodies at an artisan bakery; or sip hand-crafted cocktails. Take a food tasting tour for the full experience. Pemberton’s farms-with-a-view offer a chance to get closer to your food than ever before. View the Sea-to-Sky’s volcanic peaks with a flightseeing tour, take a gondola to great heights in Squamish or Whistler, raft through voracious glacier-fed rivers, or trot through Pemberton meadows by horseback. Squamish—typically known for mountain activities like rock climbing, hiking, and biking—is also a stepping stone to Howe Sound. Laid-back West Coast Culture
Rugged Coastal Landscapes No matter how many times you experience it, the dramatic coastal scenery stirs the soul. Capture a collage of moments: misty mornings overlooking rocky shores, dewy strolls through ancient rainforest, and sunset beach strolls, to name a few. Depending on where you choose to explore, find the tranquillity of protected waters or the energy of untamed surf beaches. The remote inlets and plunging fjords of the Sunshine Coast beckon to be explored by kayak, boat, or paddleboard. Tip: take a guided ocean tour to access little-known areas. Or, hop on the ferry to Campbell River on Vancouver Island, where you can head out with an experienced fishing charter and find out why it’s known as “the salmon capital of the world.” On the mainland, enjoy peek-a-boo views of the ocean as you hike along the Sunshine Coast Trail among towering giants shrouded in lichen. On Vancouver Island, explore the coast along the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park in the south or stroll the eastern shores of Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park near Parksville.
Celebrate a world of contrast, from sleepy seaside towns to buzzing cities. With every visit to the coast, you’ll discover a new gem—a funky coffee shop, a new brewery, a colourful art gallery, or a beachy boutique selling locally-made artisan goods. The burgeoning coastal culinary scene isn’t just reserved for cities like Victoria and Nanaimo. Head on a foodie adventure to the Cowichan Valley or Salt Spring Island to sample farm-fresh ingredients and craft provisions. Or, try Indigenous-inspired cuisine in Port Hardy.
Lively Resident Wildlife If you haven’t had a chance to experience the wilder side of BC’s coast, there’s still time. Take a whale-watching tour to see orcas surge through calm waters and listen to the cacophony of sea lions shouting from their rocky perches. On shore, you might glimpse grizzlies, black bears, wolves, and deer as they slink across the land. Venture on a cultural wildlife tour with an Indigenous guide to gain a deeper connection to the coast and the First Nations people who have been stewards of this land for thousands of years.

eadfoots beware: school and playground zones in Vancouver are now 30 km/h, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
On Tuesday, July 7, Vancouver City Council approved a motion to advance slower and safer speeds on Vancouver’s residential streets. Right now, school zone speed limit reductions are in effect from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. weekdays. The blanket speed limit for local streets within municipalities is set by the Province at 50 km/h unless otherwise posted.

Now, the speed limit for all school and playground zones will be 30 km/h, 24/7. In May 2019, City Council passed the Safer Slower Streets: 30 km/h Residential Street Pilot motion which directed staff to identify a local street, area, or areas within the City to pilot a 30 km/h speed limit demonstration project and report back with implementation strategy, timing, and budget, as well as proposed road design changes.

The 2020 Transportation Safety Update report notes that lower motor vehicle speeds dramatically improve safety for people walking and cycling. Some arterial and collector streets (such as portions of Hastings Street, Victoria Street, 29th Avenue, Prior Street and
Beach Avenue) have had their speed limits reduced to 30 km/h in response to local safety concerns. However, report authors note that these streets are generally designed for higher traffic volumes, larger vehicles, and emergency response. As such, tools such as speed humps, which are effective on local streets, cannot be implemented without significant impacts to emergency vehicles, goods movement, and transit. Without such measures to complement speed limit 2020 Transportation Safety Update, the report notes that the slow zones on arterials haven't been effective. To combat this, ICBC intersection safety cameras were recently installed along Hastings Street slow zones to enforce the 30 km/h speed limit. By Elana Shepert
