First exhibit from new Chinese Canadian Museum launches in Chinatown
A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia is the first exhibit from the Chinese Canadian Museum, recently established by a $10 million investment from the provincial government to the City of Vancouver "to support further planning" for the new museum. This exhibit explores the history of Chinese immigration, with a particular focus on how the communities were able to stay vibrant through the food and restaurant culture they brought to British Columbia, through individual narratives. “People told us they wanted the Chinese Canadian Museum to showcase Chinese Canadian history, past and present, in the places where it happened,” said Lisa Beare, minister of tourism, arts and culture in a release. “This exhibit embodies that vision by telling the stories of the people who helped build British Columbia and offers a way for British Columbians to add their stories.” The temporary exhibit features interactive story panels, alongside videos and audio that aim to provide snapshots from Chinese Canadians’ lives, the province added. Exhibit visitors learn how "Chinese migrants and their descendants have found ways to earn a living, challenge systemic racism, connect with others, survive and thrive through hope and resilience." Museum guests can also add their own personal stories to the museum's collection during their visit. As part of the exhibit, British Columbians will be able to share their experiences as Chinese Canadians, their interactions with Chinese

Canadians in their community or even their experiences as migrants living in a new place. There are several different methods through which visitors can choose to share their stories, including on-camera or in-person interviews, in writing or simply by placing a marker on a map. Following its tenure in Vancouver Chinatown, the exhibition will continue to collect stories from visitors across B.C. as it travels throughout the province. Museum staff are “excited to open this temporary exhibit and welcome everyone to visit it in Chinatown," said Grace Wong, chair of the Chinese Canadian Museum, in a release.

ancouverites will now be able to learn more about Chinese Canadian history thanks to a free, temporary exhibit that launched in Chinatown last Saturday.
"The exhibit offers a taste of how the Chinese Canadian Museum will share the historical contributions of Chinese Canadians and their continued role in the fabric of British Columbia and Canada," she added. This temporary exhibition is the result of a collaborative effort between the Chinese Canadian Museum Society of BC, the Museum of Vancouver and the University of British Columbia. The funding came alongside a memorandum of understanding signed by the province and the City of Vancouver to establish the museum and to pursue United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site Designation for Vancouver Chinatown. The Museum of Vancouver also plans to launch a larger, related exhibit at its own location in October 2020, the province noted. Said Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart in the release, “There is so much history and culture here in Vancouver. This is a great, affordable opportunity for people to learn more about the lives and experiences of the Chinese Canadians who shaped our city. I hope people come on

down and check it out and enjoy Vancouver Chinatown.” The Chinese Canadian Museum Society of BC has implemented several safety measures to ensure visitors' health and safety while attending the exhibit. Those precautions include a maximum attendance of 14 people at any given time; hand sanitizer that will be provided to visitors, masks required for staff and recommended for patrons, as well as additional signage within the museum reminding exhibit visitors to keep a two-metre distance between themselves and others at all times. A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia is located at the Hon Hsing Athletic Club, 27 East Pender St., and is open Friday until Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The exhibit will run through 2021. By Megan Lalonde

Downtown Vancouver bar manager sparked outrage on social media after he tweeted that a massive party bus with over 20 people tried to enter his establishment Saturday night. While the manager wrote that the group was "shocked and angry" when they were denied entry, one of the people who rode on the party bus says the group didn't try to go into the bar. In fact, he claims that they didn't even interact with bar staff. In a phone interview, Patrick McWilliams, 25, tells Vancouver Is Awesome that he and his friends decided to take a party bus to Downtown Vancouver Saturday night from Langley in order to save money - as well as have some fun. However, he says there were only 14 people on the bus, not over 20. "If you take a cab from the Fraser Valley into Vancouver it costs like 250 bucks," he explains. "With a party bus you pay about $500 but split between 10 people or more that's a great deal. "Plus, it's more fun." McWilliams says the group rented a party bus from Boss Limosine Service, a Surrey-based company. He is unable to say exactly how many people the vehicle could accommodate, but estimates that it was approximately the size of a TransLink HandyDART bus. He adds that he was with a "tight-knit friend group." "The seating was all around the edge of the bus, but they didn't give us
instructions about distancing once we were on the bus," notes McWilliams. "But no alcohol was allowed."
rules. If we weren't allowed to be in a party bus we wouldn't have been," notes McWilliams. "A lot of people are throwing me under the bus, no pun intended.
Once the group arrived in Granville Street's entertainment district, McWilliams says they decided to get off the bus. While that happened to be near the Belmont Hotel, he states that the group did not plan on going there. Instead, they planned to split into separate groups and go to different locations.
"I'm getting rude comments and DMs, and I feel like that Don guy [bar manager at the Living Room Bar] is using this to get business for his bar."
"I went with five people to the Fountainhead Pub on Davie. Once we were in, we sat at two separate tables of three and I had a really nice conversation with the manager," explains McWilliams. Scotty Larin, Bar Manager at the Fountainhead Pub, tells V.I.A. in a phone call that he doesn't specifically remember meeting McWilliams, but he does remember having a conversation with a nice young man about the rules concerning seating during the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, he says the group he recalls was a group of seven, which is why they had to be split into two tables and could not move between tables.
Falconer adds that the passengers were, "Shocked and angry," when staff denied them entry. Despite strict guidelines outlining the maximum allowable number of people in many stores, clubs, and restaurants, the rules are decidedly murky about how many people may occupy a vehicle.
In a Tweet, Don Falconer, bar manager of the Living Room Bar, says 20 to 25 people climbed out of the vehicle in front of the bar. He quipped, "Take your rolling penthouse party somewhere else."
Some of the companies that V.I.A. reached out to said that they have 30 to 35 person party buses, but that they are reducing the number of passengers to ensure physical distancing. However, in some cases, as many as 25 people can still be on a bus. Further, many companies do not require passengers to wear masks. V.I.A. reached out to Boss Limousine Service multiple times but they have not provided a comment.
"I meet so many people in a night that's it is hard to remember all of the names," Larin notes. "But it could have been him." And while McWilliams acknowledges that a girl from his group of friends may have asked to use the washroom at the Belmont's Living Room Bar, he says that the group did not try to enter the bar. "People have a mentality that we are in Phase 1 - we aren't. We followed all the

The young Canucks can be satisfied with h just making the playoffs, for now
T
he Canucks have never missed the playoffs five years in a row, not once in franchise history. As much as the 50-year history of the team is full of disappointment and frustration, at the very least they’ve never put their fanbase through an extended playoff drought.
After four years outside the postseason, the Canucks avoided extending that streak with a 3-1 series win over the Minnesota Wild in this year’s qualifying round, a unique element to this year’ss playoffs due to the bizarre circumstance of the COVID-19 pandemic. By doing so, they met the meagre expectations this team faced heading into the season. It was an expectation built on the back of the bold trade GM Jim Benning made at the 2019 entry ryy draft, sending a conditional first round pick and a third round pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning for J.T. Miller. If the Canucks had missed the playoffs this year, that first round pick would have become an unprotected pick in 2021, so there was a lot on the line. Maki king i the playoffs is a low bar to clear — more than half lff of the teams do so — but the Canucks still get credit for clearing it. For the moment, just maki king i the playoffs feels like an accomplishment; anything on top of that is gravy vy. y Those expectations will change in a hurry ryy for the young core of the Canucks now that they’ve gotten their feet wet. No
matter what happens, the Canucks’ young stars have proven they can play in the playoffs — now Canucks fans, desperate for a Stanley Cup, will want more in the seasons to come. Fortunately, the young core is ready to make that push. Elias Pettersson may be new to the NHL playoffs, but he’s already carried a team to a championship in his young career, leading the SHL playoffs in scoring at 19. Quinn Hughes is a gamechanger, who looks poised to be the best defenceman in the NHL as early as next season. Brock Boeser has adapted his game from being a pure sniper to winning puck battles along the boards and battling for rebounds in front of the net. Bo Horv rvat v has become the complete player the Canucks’ envisioned when they traded away Cory ryy Schneider at his peak to acquire him. That’s the core of a team that can win the Stanley Cup. What remains to be seen is if the Canucks have the support rting t cast to reach those heights.

their contracts? Is the defence, beyond Hughes, capable of matching up against tru rue u Cup contenders? Maki king i the playoffs, like putting together a great young core, is only half lff the battle. The second half lf, f putting together a complete team that can go all the way, might prove more difficult.
Like most of the Canucks’ young core, Jacob Markstrom is a playoff rooki kie, i but looks eminently capable of carry rying y the load on a long playoff run. ru u Only, he’l’lll be an unrestricted free agent when the season ends. Will the Canucks re-sign him to be their number one for years to come or hand the reins to the young and relatively untested Thatcher Demko?
One thing, however, might make all the difference: this team tru ruly u believes that they can win the Stanley Cup. As much as the Canucks can be satisfied with maki king i the playoffs, they absolutely won’t be. They believe they can do more and go fart rther t and, in the playoffs, when the result of each game balances on the edge of a knife, kn n that confidence could tilt the balance in their favour.

photo of Vancouver City Councillor Sarah KirbyYung not practicing physical distancing while apparently legally drinking in public has surfaced. And by surfaced, I mean she made the odd decision of sharing the image to her Twitter account.
Seemingly following our Mayor Kennedy Stewart's "Do as I say, not as I do" approach to following (that is, not following) COVID-19 guidelines while out in public, the councillor was at the launch of the newlyopened public drinking plaza on Cambie at 17th Ave last week when the photo was taken. It shows an unmasked Kirby-Yung hamming it up within a few inches of a similarly unmasked local author who was reading at the event, under a canopy set up by the Cambie Village Business Improvement Association. A face mask and a half-drank glass of Strongbow cider sit on a table in front of her. Explaining the decision to share the photo to Vancouver Is Awesome, Kirby-Yung tried to play it down, noting that "It was a two-second elbow bump," and went on to say that "Appropriate physical distancing was maintained throughout the evening. It was an outdoor event as recommended by the PHO as the safest way to socialize. It’s a good reminder to all of us to be vigilant even for a few brief seconds. Safety protocols matter." Four temporary plazas opened up last week. They're the City's answer to allowing people to drink alcohol in some public places after a failed attempt by the Park Board to open up parks and beaches to drinking during these weird and uncertain times.
A
s the pandemic continues and Canadians are spending more and more time at home, renters are increasingly finding space and cost to be more important than proximity to city amenities, according to rent tracker PadMapper. Because of this, the average rent for both one- and two-bedroom apartments fell in Vancouver, year-over-year, while Burnaby rent grew over the same period. The average rent for a one-bedroom Vancouver apartment in August was $2,060, which is a 6.4% drop compared with August 2019. Two-bedroom apart rtments t rented for, on average, $2,800 – a drop of 9.4% year-over-year. Meanwhile, the average one-bedroom in Burnaby rented for $1,710, which is up 8.9% compared with one year ago.

Friendly reminder to keep a minimum 2-meter distance away from other customers and staff.
Dr. Henry isn't known for coming down on people who blatantly disregard her rules and recommendations, even politicians who should be setting an example, so (in my opinion) in some cases that leaves it up to the media to do that work for her.
Kirby-Yung is also hopeful. In fact she recently shared a message on Twitter saying that "We all need to do our part to follow health guidelines and keep people safe. Or we’ll never get to recovery."

The average two-bedroom was $2,300, up a more modest 0.9% Abbotsford saw even more drastic increases than Burnaby. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment was $1,100 (up 15.8%), while two-bedroom apartments were $1,270 (up 15.5%). “Exacerbating the trend from previous months, the pandemic has continued to push demand for rentals away from big, pricy cities toward more affordable, satellite ones that offer renters more space,” PadMapper said in its monthly report. PadMapper tracks median rents for all homes that are currently available to rent or vacant and does not include those homes that are already rented out.
Please check our website and social media regularly for any announcements or changes to our hours of operation. Please respect that we are limiting the number of customers allowed in the store, and if possible, plan for only 1 family member to shop in the store. This will help to reduce wait times for everyone.
In case you weren't aware (let's say, perhaps, you were literally just born), for the past few months B.C.'s Public Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, has been telling the public daily that we should stay at least 6 feet away from people not in our bubbles, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. If we can't do this, she says we should wear a mask. Like, say, the one sitting on the table in front of the councillor here.
So here we go: Be kind, be calm, be safe, and whatever you do please don't follow the example that some of the elected officials in Vancouver have been setting for you.

Ryan Reynolds has a request to young people during COVID-19: 'Don't kill my mom'
L
ast week, Premier John Horgan asked B.C.-raised Hollywood heavyweights Ryan Reynolds and Seth Rogen to help him encourage young people in the province to stop partying during the pandemic.
"This is a call out to Deadpool right now," Horgan said. “Ryan, we need your help out here, get in touch with us.” On Friday, the Deadpool star responded to Horgan's plea in a Tweet, stating, "I got your message about the thing. Look, I'm not sure it's a great idea, frankly. People don't want medical advice from guys like me."
However, in typical Reynolds fashion, the beloved Canadian actor joked that he could give advice about plastic surgery, because he, "used to be Hugh Jackman." Following his joke, Reynolds underscored that many young people may not realize how many young people are getting sick from COVID-19 and that many of them are dying.

Reynolds continued to inject levity into the serious message by saying that his mom would also like to be out having fun on Kitsilano Beach, and that he hoped that young people in the province would keep both her and Canadian icon David Suzuki safe during the health crisis. "I hope that young people in B.C. don't kill my mom, frankly, or David Suzuki," said Reynolds. With active COVID-19 cases at their highest in three months, Horgan hinted at a carrot and stick approach to British Columbians — and especially younger people — to heed health and safety guidelines. In a press conference before the day’s new COVID-19 cases were released, Horgan said if private house parties continue to contribute to the growing caseload in the province, enforcement will follow suit, with warnings escalating into more severe penalties. - With files from Stefan Labbé. hile most events have been scaled down (if not cancelled outright) since the COVID-19 pandemic began, when BC Culture Days returns next month for its 11th annual event, the celebration of all things arts and culture will be doing so with an expanded line-up of offerings instead. The annual initiative, set to run from Sept. 25 to Oct. 25 this year, aims to raise "awareness, accessibility, participation, and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities," according to a release.
