OPINION

After a few flawless months, Dr. Bonnie Henry finally disappoints

O

ur Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, has done a commendable job of providing British Columbians with daily doses of sound advice—and reassurance —since the COVID-19 pandemic began. She is many peoples' rock, worthy of fandom by citizens and more than one pair of Fluevog shoes created in her honour. Henry has done such a great job in the foreground and the background leading B.C.'s fight against the novel coronavirus that many journalists who are supposed to be objective fawn over her, making public proclamations about how fabulous she is.

She's a hero and she deserves to be a member of the Order of British Columbia. Of that, there is no question. However she recently showed us that after spending months working in close proximity to politicians, she hasn't proven immune to catching what some might consider an infectious disease that most of them carry. Despite wearing a mask and being kind, calm and safe, she seems to have come down with a case of Politician-20. In her daily briefing on Monday, August 31, she was asked to explain the commercial in which she appears, announcing B.C.'s back to school plan. It shows a classroom that is nothing like the crowded ones that B.C. students will be entering this week, and the ad has been criticized by the BC

Teachers' Federation for offering an unrealistic look at what schools will look like in real life.

Henry's explanation was that it wasn't supposed to look like the classrooms our children will be going into. She explained that on the day of the shooting she was answering questions from a few children of different ages and that they were the ones who wanted it to be shot in a classroom setting. Henry said it was not supposed to represent what the actual environment will look like. Unfortunately for her, the 30-second spot doesn't have time to start or end with an explainer about the scenario, or a look behind the scenes at what was happening on the day it was filmed. To the average viewer, the commercial shows our public health officer announcing the Province's back to school plan. It's safe to say that most people watching it would assume that it's supposed to offer a glimpse into what going back to school will look like, especially considering she's explaining what it will look like verbally—in a classroom. When we heard her asked about it in her briefing, I imagine that many expected her answer to include an apology for it looking that way. For her to acknowledge that, yes, it is a quick spot and it does appear that they're trying to make British Columbians think that classrooms will consist of six kids, spaced apart from each other. And that, hey, maybe

they mad de a miisttakke, and d it wasn''t theiir inttenttion to try to fool us. Instead, she acted like a politician would, perhaps even on their advice, and with the fear that the BCTF might use her answer against the government in some form of legal action that they hope isn't coming. Whatever her reason for answering the way that she did, it was deeply disappointing, and it was a rare showing for her. Let's hope she recovers soon and that it was simply a 24-hour case of Politician-20 that she was suffering from. If there's an election on the horizon and she's still infected, it would be in the best interest of British Columbians that she seek out a vaccine for it. By Bob Kronbauer

alf of Vancouver’s 22 public library locations will have reopened to the public since the COVID-19 pandemic forced large-scale shutdowns of its facilities this March.

Production of Ben Affleck's newest action-thriller relocates to Vancouver amid COVID-19

P

roduction on a new Ben Affleck action-thriller is relocating to Hollywood North due to the rising dangers the coronavirus has presented to film industry professionals in the U.S.

“We were due to start April 27 but in March Los Angeles was completely shut down due to a rise in COVID-19 cases,” retold Solstice Studios CEO and president Mark Gill. “That was the end of that,” he remarked. With no other American cities as an option for filming, due to a lack of ample coronavirus testing in the country, Gill is relocating productions for Hypnotic to Vancouver. The script, written by Robert Rodriguez and Max Borenstein – of the Godzilla franchise – will tell the story of a detective who delves into the mystery of his missing daughter and a secret government program. “There is really nowhere in the U.S. right now that you can film production of this size,” Gill said, estimating the number of employees that will be on set in the hundreds.

In any other instance, such a gathering would defy a B.C. provincial health ban limiting gatherings to 50 people or less – but Solstice Studios has agreed with the union representing the cast and crew to provide expedient COVID-19 testing. Testing will happen every few days, much like it does in “the NHL bubble,” Gill told Vancouver Is Awesome. Results will be known within 48 hours. Such production changes that result from the coronavirus have driven up the cost of making big box office films this year. "At least a million dollars or more," Gill estimates the film will cost to make during the pandemic. “Unfortunately, if you want to make a movie right now, that’s what it is." For instance, to protect Affleck, his scenes will be filmed separately from dozens of extras. “We will film the extras separately and have them edited together into the frame with the lead actors who we’ve shot by themselves,” Gill explained. This, to minimize any potential COVID-19 spread, the CEO said. The exact locations where Hypnotic will be filmed in Vancouver have not yet been scouted, Gill said. "It's a relief that the film industry in Vancouver is up-andrunning, and Canada is doing such a good job at reducing the spread of the disease." Solstice Studio's expected start date for production is Oct. 26. By Aug. 31, California surpassed 700,000 cases of the virus. By Sarah Grochowski

he Vancouver Aquarium is hoping additional donations and a patient group of members will keep the facility running safely and soundly for its animal residents, despite its indefinite closure to the public.

staff positions as of September 7, the last day before the indefinite closure.

Ocean Wise president and CEO Lasse Gustavsson announced last Monday (Aug. 31) the aquarium in Stanley Park will close to the public until a new business plan incorporating COVID-19 physical distancing measures is put in place.

“The wellbeing of our animals remains our top priority and during our temporary closure, our team of 75 specialists – including biologists, animal care experts, water quality technicians and veterinary staff – will remain onsite at the Vancouver Aquarium to provide uninterrupted animal care,” Gustavsson stated online.

The aquarium had lost over $2 million over the two months it had been open with limited capacity and ticket sales were down 80% during its otherwise busiest time of year. “We are already burning our reserves,” said Gustavsson, adding the Ocean Wise board of directors has yet to find an approach to adequately monetize public visits in a limited capacity.

f you've been itching to soak in the panoramic views from one of TransLink's new double-decker buses, there are now more options than ever to choose from.

TransLink Spokesperson Gabrielle Price tells Vancouver Is Awesome in an email that TRANSLINK the transportation agency's last double-decker bus from its original order hit the streets last week. “Customers will today be able to hop on board the last of the 32 double-decker buses now operating around Metro Vancouver," she said. "This means that all 32 double decker buses TransLink ordered are now in service. Double-decker buses were added to expand the current fleet and replace aging highway coaches, while also providing customers with a less crowded, more comfortable, and better socially distanced transit experience.”

Double-deckers now provide service on the following routes:

• 301 Newton Exchange / RichmondBrighouse station

• 620 Bridgeport / Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal • 555 Lougheed Station / Carvolth Exchange The double-deckers also provide panoramic views from the upper deck, staircases

with handrails to maximize safety, and full accessibility with a low floor and boarding ramp. Further, TransLink has installed screens that allow customers to see vacant seats before going upstairs. They also have almost double the seats of a highway coach, and you can plug your USB cable into one of the handy charging outlets. Before you hop on board, keep in mind that TransLink now requires all customers to wear non-medical masks or face coverings on all transit vehicles. Customers who are unable to wear face coverings due to an underlying medical condition or disability will be exempt from this policy and won’t be asked to wear a mask or face covering. These customers will have the option to request a TransLink branded card which notes they are exempt from wearing a face covering. The cards will be made available at Compass Customer Service Centres at Stadium-Chinatown and Waterfront Stations. By Elana Shepert

Black bear makes unexpected visit to B.C. hotel lobby

A

new guest made an unexpected visit to the Four Seasons Resort Whistler this summer.

Security footage from the alpine hotel's lobby in July shows a curious bruin sauntering in through the front door. Following this, the black bear walks up a couple of steps in the lobby to investigate its posh surroundings.

A spokesperson for the Four Seasons Resort Whistler tells Vancouver Is Awesome in an email that the manager on duty saw the black bear right away and was able to safely escort it out of the building.

teems with them in a variety of shapes and sizes. With this in mind, not every British Columbian has encountered a bear. In fact, many locals haven't even observed one from a distance. However, if they have seen one, there's a good chance that it was a black bear (even if it wasn't black). That's right - the black bear, the most common of the three bears found in Canada, comes in a variety of colours and shades. Wild Safe B.C. notes that these bears come in, "everything from the white Kermode bear through to their namesake black and most shades of brown in between."

"No guests encountered the animal on the property," they write. "Even though this is a rare occurrence, our team is very well trained to handle these encounters given the wildlife who also live in and around this beautiful destination."

Black bears on Vancouver Island are considerably larger than their mainland cousins, but they aren't the largest in the province. That title goes to their neighbours to the north on Haida Gwaii.

British Columbia is considered "bear country" for a good reason: the province

Despite Demko's heroics, the Canucks’ season is over

T

he Canucks weren’t supposed to make the playoffs this season. They weren’t supposed to beat the defending Stanley Cup Champions that finished first in the Western Conference this season. They weren’t supposed to have a chance against the Vegas Golden Knights. They definitely weren’t supposed to come back from a 3-1 series deficit to force Game 7 with their backup goaltender in net.

And yet, this Canucks team did exactly that. They made the playoffs, beat the St. Louis Blues, and were six minutes away from stunning the Golden Knights thanks to yet another magnificent performance from Thatcher Demko. Sure, it took some bizarre and unlikely circumstances. The abrupt end of the regular season came just when the team was trending in the wrong direction. The long break before the playoffs began gave the team time to recover from injuries. The Blues shot themselves in the foot by relying on Jordan Binnington, who the Canucks kept lighting up, instead of turning to Jake Allen, who won the only two games of the series for the Blues. Then, against the Golden Knights, there was yet another unlikely and stunning circumstance. With their season MVP, Jacob Markstrom, injured, the Canucks' backup came up with a legendary performance: 122 saves on 124 shots in the first three playoff starts of his NHL career, all while facing elimination. Whatever the circumstances, however, the Canucks kept finding ways to win. Every time they were counted out, they refused to quit. Along the way, they made believers out of a lot of doubters and gave fans real hope for the future. “I don’t think many people thought we would be a goal away

+

from going to the semifinals,” said head coach Travis Green. “What our team has gone through, the mental part, the physical part, it’ll help our group. It’ll help us next year, it’ll help us in five years. There’s not many times you go into a playoffs with 10 guys playing their first playoff game and you win a Stanley Cup… This was a good experience for our guys and they’ll be a lot better for it.”

Did it end the way the Canucks and their fans wanted it to? Of course not, but sometimes the journey is worth it even if you never quite reach your destination. The Canucks got farther than anyone expected and they did it almost entirely on the backs of their youth, the future of the team. Their two best players, at least until Demko arrived over the last three games, were also their two youngest: Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. “They were unbelievable for us all playoffs,” said Bo Horvat. “Not only on the scoresheet, but doing little things, like blocking shots and those two goals don’t go in last game if

Petey doesn’t screen in front. Those are the type of guys you win with, those are the type of guys you want on your team if you want to go far in the playoffs. And this is just their first playoff taste. “The best is yet to come.” By Daniel Wagner

On behalf of Coast Mental Health Foundation and Lorne R. Segal, O.B.C., D.Litt. (Hon.). LLD. (Hon.), President of Kingswood Properties Ltd., Event Chair

THANK YOU! Thank You to all the partners and supporters who joined us throughout the month of July to celebrate Courage To Come Back Month!

July

Instead of gathering in one room, we decided to do things a little differently this year. Coast Mental Health dedicated the month of July to Courage, and celebrating the stories of Corey, Amanda, Rumana, Andrew and Mariam, each of whom have overcome extraordinary adversity to come back and give back to their own communities. Their stories were viewed over 40,000 times, reaching new audiences, and raising awareness and funds in support of the essential community-based mental health services Coast Mental Health provides here in BC. You can view the inspiring stories of this year’s recipients at: www.couragetocomeback.ca.

Nigel Howard paves way as instructor of first ASL class at UBC

B1

(ASL) course that students can take for credit towards their degrees. Howard has taught a pilot course 'Topics in Linguistics’ to UBC’s extended learning students since 2018, but no ASL course has been made available to the rest of the student body. Howard thinks the introduction of two ASL courses has a “huge” potential for impact. Specifically, he believes it could work to erase preconceptions society has about people who are deaf. “A common misconception was that being deaf was an audiological or medical experience, rather than a cultural one,” Howard elaborated. “Imagine the scenario where a doctor tells parents their child has 'failed' a hearing test, a negative connotation that can affect the parentchild relationship. We need to shift the lens – your child is healthy and deaf.”

nthusiastic and expressional, Nigel Howard has risen in the ranks of public esteem since he first interpreted Dr. Bonnie Henry’s live, televised provincial COVID-19 briefings.

The Vancouver resident has communicated the complicated details around the pandemic to B.C.'s Deaf community. He's done so with an unmatched gusto that’s seen a

Facebook fan page pop up in his honour. As a United Nations Deaf interpreter, teacher, and treasurer for the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters, Howard is about to add another accolade to his growing list of accomplishments. In September, he will instruct the University of British Columbia’s first accredited American Sign Language

Autumn Promotion On!

UBC students in the medical and educational fields could benefit from a better understanding of Deaf culture, Howard said. Ultimately, it could lead to changes in how people who are deaf are portrayed in media and society.

“We’re offering language, not a disability,” Howard emphasized. As of now, the classes are capped at 30 students – but with more interest from students, the number of ASL classes offered could grow to include higher-level courses, added UBC linguistics professor Strang Burton. By Sarah Grochowski

92% of TransLink customers are wearing face masks In a release issued Wednesday, the transportation agency says a whopping 92 per cent of its customers are now wearing masks on board transit vehicles. The news comes just over a week after the new policy came into effect. TransLink staff conducted spot checks at high customer volume locations across the system over several days last week. Approximately 31,000 customers were counted as part of the spot checks, and about 92 per cent of these customers were seen wearing masks. “This is a very encouraging trend,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “This level of compliance shows our approach is succeeding and we’ll keep working hard to ensure we can continue to build on these numbers. I’m pleased to see our customers are helping us make transit safer for the thousands of people who rely on the system every day.” Customers are required to wear non-medical masks or face coverings while onboard all TransLink vehicles as physical distancing is not always possible on transit. Although

Transit Police can enforce this rule requiring face coverings on transit, the initial focus of this policy is on awareness. CVA 2009-005.514

O

n Aug. 24, Hugs Over Masks gathered outside of Metrotown SkyTrain Station to protest TransLink's new mandatory mask policy. However, TransLink says that 'anti-maskers' represent the minority of its riders.

Exemptions for TransLink’s mandatory face covering policy include: • Anyone with an underlying medical condition or disability which inhibits the ability to wear a mask or face covering;

Vancouver WAS Awesome

• Persons unable to place or remove a mask or face covering without assistance; • Children under 5 years of age; • Employees working behind a physical barrier or within areas designated for employees and not for public access; • Police, employees, or first responders in an emergency. The mandatory mask policy is part of TransLink’s Safe Operating Action Plan, which includes increased cleaning and sanitizing of transit vehicles and hubs, increased service levels and steps to create space between customers where possible. Widespread mask use is essential for ensuring customers have confidence riding transit as British Columbia’s economy continues to reopen and more people commute around the region.

Seniors’ care during COVID-19 Dementia Q&A

Dr. Elisabeth Drance, MD FRCP(C), Geriatric Psychiatry, and Ms. Karen Gilbert, Occupational Therapist, opened the session with a presentation on compassion and innovation for dementia caregivers. Two resources they recommended were:

From The Alzheimer Society of BC website: “There is no one specific test that can diagnose dementia. If dementia is suspected, a number of physical and cognitive tests will need to be performed. A combination of the physical and cognitive test results, along with a detailed medical history, provides doctors with the evidence needed to make a diagnosis.” Visit https://alzheimer.ca/en/bc/Aboutdementia/Diagnosis/Getting-a-diagnosis for more information.

For mindfulness: http://www.presencecareproject.com Tools for dementia caregivers: https://www.dementiacarers.ca/learning-resources Physiotherapist Ms. Rebecca Shook provided some easy exercises to help seniors stay active and move safely at home. Rebecca recommends visiting the Finding Balance website for more details: www.findingbalancebc.ca. Our panel of experts provided information about staying connected with family, friends, and caregivers during the pandemic. A very important piece of advice provided was to take time to laugh! For information around COVID-19 please visit www.healthlinkbc.ca Presentations are available for viewing on St. Paul’s Foundation’s YouTube page at http://www.youtube.com/helpstpauls.

2. My husband has early onset dementia and was told by the doctor there is no cure. Is there anything to help improve his memory? There are many things a person can do to improve their day-today cognitive functioning, even with a diagnosis of dementia. A doctor’s referral to the Elder Care Clinic at St. Paul’s, or a similar program in his area, can provide him with an assessment and individualized recommendations to promote optimal brain health. Many people benefit from applying and

Vancouver Park Board to open over 50 recreation facilities in 6 weeks

he Vancouver Park Board has reopened 24 community centres across the city as of Tuesday, Sept. 8, which will be followed by a phased reopening of eight indoor pools, eight ice rinks, and 14 fitness centres. Priority programs and services focusing on children, youth, seniors, and food security will be the first to restart.

Some centres are offering programming such as child care immediately, while others will have soft reopenings to familiarize patrons with new protocols and procedures prior to program start dates. All sites are open Monday to Friday with some locations offering extended hours on evenings and/or weekends. That said, times may differ slightly between sites to support specific licensed child care programs. Community centres will provide washroom access, but showers, change rooms, and locker access will only be available for pool users. Patrons should arrive ready for their program or service. Indoor pools will begin reopening on Sept. 14 when swimmers return to four pools later this month: Hillcrest, Kerrisdale, Britannia and the Vancouver Aquatic Centre. The remaining four pools, Killarney, Templeton, Lord Byng, and Renfrew, will open next month with a target date of Oct. 13. Kensington pool will not reopen this fall due to its size, which is too small to safely accommodate the physical distancing required for aquatic use during the pandemic. Casual swimmers can book a 90-minute swim session, while lane swimmers can book a 45-minute swim session online, up to 72 hours in advance. There will be a 45-minute break

between swim sessions, at which time the pool will be cleared and facilities will be sanitized to prepare for the next group. As the pools are different sizes, the capacity of each pool will vary. Individual lanes (for length swimming) have a maximum capacity of six swimmers per double-wide lane. Patrons are not to gather at the same end of the lane, nor change lanes during the swim. Saunas and steam rooms will remain closed at this time. Only hot tubs large enough for safe use will be open. As the hot tubs will be limited in capacity, patrons will be asked to limit their time to 10 minutes at a time, giving other visitors an opportunity for access. There will be no rentals of swimming goggles, kickboards, snorkels or towels. Snorkels are not permitted. Kickboards may be used if patrons bring their own. The first fitness centres

will open Sept. 14 and will include: Trout Lake, Hillcrest, Dunbar, Kitsilano, Champlain Heights, Mount Pleasant, and Creekside (which will only offer personal training at this time). The following month, seven more fitness centres will open on Oct. 13: Kensington, Marpole, Strathcona, Lord Byng, Templeton, Renfrew, and the Vancouver Aquatic Centre facility. The remaining fitness centres located within Community Centres are operated independently by CCAs. Those CCAs will determine later this fall if or when their facilities will open. In order to maintain physical distancing, a limited number of users will be permitted in the fitness centres at a time (the number of spaces will vary depending on the size of each facility). Visitors can book a one-hour session up to 72 hours in advance online. Park Board arenas will begin reopening on Sept. 21 with ice going in first at Trout Lake, Sunset, Kerrisdale, and Britannia. On Sept. 28 the Park Board will open rinks at Hillcrest and Killarney. The remaining two arenas, Kitsilano and the West End, will open on Oct. 5. Arenas will begin by opening for organized play by permit-holders, sport and team bookings only, with public skating, lessons, and recreational use coming later in the fall. Park Board flexipasses will not be accepted at this time, as the program is currently suspended until the end of the month. Reservations for swimming and fitness centre use will follow a similar process as outdoor pool bookings. Patrons will be able to pre-book guaranteed access online up to 72 hours in advance. Approximately 80% of use will be allocated for pre-bookings, with 20% reserved for drop-ins, with cash or contactless payment accepted on site. The Leisure Access Pass (LAP) program will allow users to book using their LAP. Hours of operation and information on how to reserve recreation services at various facilities will be available online. Anyone accessing public recreational facilities or services is reminded to stay home if feeling unwell, exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19, or if they have traveled outside of Canada within the previous 14 days. The Park Board continues to review the feasibility of reopening other facilities and services and will make adjustments to its operations based on the latest information provided by VCH, the Provincial Health Officer, and industry partners. We are in a new age g of senior living. Veronica and Ted, residents of Revera

This year has brought more tears than we thought possible. We responded to a virus unlike anything we’ve seen. We lost people we loved and cared for. We were pushed to our limits. We faced fear. We united with public health exp perts,, healthcare partners, and our peers to face this great unknown together. Our frontline staff worked tirelessly. We felt immense gratitude for the swells of support from our local communities. We stood shoulder to shoulder with others in the sector, sharing knowledge, knowing we were all in this together..

Dr. Rhonda Collins, Chief Medical Officer

We persevered. The COVID-19 pandemic in Canada broke our hearts. But it will never break our will. Every day, guided by values of respect, integrity, compassion and excellence, we are fostering a safe and healthy environment so protect and care for those we love.. we can p We are adapting.
