Meet the cyclist squad saving lives in the Downtown Eastside When BC Emergency Health Services Bike Squad was reinstated Sept. 4, its DTES members attended 63 medical emergencies in just ten days.

Calls they responded to covered almost 20 per cent of Vancouver overdose calls in that same timespan, said BCEHS paramedic Darren Metta, one of the riders.

The 50-year-old gears up at 9 a.m. four days a week for a 45-kilometre ride that sees him and his partner work to save lives 11 hours straight.

For people in the DTES community, Bike Squad members offer a friendly face without the attention that ambulance sirens draw to a person suffering a medical emergency.

“We get flagged down a lot,” Metta elaborated.

“People walk up to us. A lot of times they don’t have access to a phone and tell us about someone nearby who ‘doesn’t look so good’,” he said.

“Then we’ll go check it out and they won't need to call 911."

It’s been four years since the BCEHS program first touched down in the neighbourhood.

Last year, from May 1 to Oct. 31, the team prevented 1,064 ambulance calls in downtown Vancouver due to their on-scene care.

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has posed a unique challenge to the paramedics, who work to dismount their bicycles at a safe social distance while being approached for help.

For every call, the paramedics don personal protective gear including a face shield, mask, and gloves. When there is a suspected COVID-19 case, the attendants wear a full-body gown.

fter nearly a year away from their bicycles, four Downtown Eastside paramedics have returned to two wheels.

The gear adds an extra 50 pounds to their mountain bikes, which are fitted with purpose-built panniers.

“A lot of times we can get to the scene first,” Metta explained, as bikes can navigate congested areas and arrive at the patient's side faster than a traditional ambulance.

“It often reduces the time it takes for the person to get treated.”

And in instances of overdose, heart attack, or life-threatening injuries, every second a paramedic saves counts, said BCEHS spokesperson Sarah Morris.

“We also carry all the same medical equipment inside an ambulance, except for the stretcher,” Metta remarked.

Though it's not always an easy job, Metta said it is a deeply rewarding one.

As a paramedic for the last 20 years, he has preferred interacting with the DTES community from the seat of his bike.

The BCEHS Bike Squad will be deployed until Oct. 31 as one of the several fleets in communities around B.C., including the Vancouver International Airport.

s much as the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on every facet of society in Vancouver, it has also driven people in self-isolation to adopt canine companions.

The sight was particularly concerning considering the COVID-19 pandemic has strained the municipality's finances.

“I was disappointed like others, to see that purchase had been made when we are in quite tough financial times,” the mayor told reporters at a Sept. 17 press conference.

Stewart said city council voted in favour of general maintenance and upgrades to the "very old city hall," but "council does not vote on furniture.”

The mayor did not clarify whether, if found to be a purchasing error, the chairs would be refunded.

SPCA shelters in Vancouver have seen a formidable increase in online dog adoption applications, general manager Lorie Chortyk told Vancouver Is Awesome.

“We’ve not only seen an increase in applications but the number of applications we’re getting per animal,” Chortyk said. “Sometimes it's 200 people who apply for one dog.”

The increase was first noticeable in midMarch when the pandemic was declared and SPCA adoption processes had to convert to online applications.

“We’ve seen strong interest throughout the pandemic though especially in the early months when people were much more isolated at home,” the manager explained.

As of Friday, Vancouver’s main SPCA branch at 1205 East 7 Ave., had no dogs currently listed up for adoption on the SPCA website.

This, due to the bevy of applications that

SPCA staff go through. When one dog is adopted, the others who have applied to rehome the animal go on a waitlist.

“SPCA staff notifies those people first to be fair to people who have already applied,” Chortyk said.

For those still interested in adopting an SPCA animal, Chortyk assured that the animal welfare organization gets new dogs and puppies brought to their shelters every day.

“There still are so many homeless animals in British Columbia that people wouldn’t or couldn’t look after.”

“Be patient,” Chortyk encouraged. On its website, there is a portal where prospective dog owners can fill out the type of breed they are looking for in a dog and the shelter location.

From that, users will receive email alerts of dogs that come into to SPCA shelters matching their desired companion.

At any given time in the province, Chortyk said the BC SPCA has about 1,000 animals – mostly dogs and cats – in its 37 shelters.

Getting your flu shot will be different this year With heightened awareness of respiratory illnesses because of COVID-19 and 2 million doses of publicly funded flu vaccines available in B.C. this year, the British Columbia Pharmacy Association expects there to be a higher demand for flu shots.

British Columbians planning to get their flu shot from pharmacies this fall should expect a different experience, as pharmacists are adding additional precautions to protect against COVID-19.

Some of these changes will include the requirement at many pharmacies that you book an appointment for a flu shot well in advance, rather than walk-in.

“With COVID-19, there’s an expectation that B.C. pharmacists will deliver more shots because of the increase in demand,” said Geraldine Vance, CEO of the BC Pharmacy Association. “Pharmacists will be putting in more time and resources to keep patients and themselves safe during COVID-19."

In 2020, patients will need to book their appointment before heading to a pharmacy. In the past, many pharmacies offered walk-ins or even host flu shot clinic hours, where patients have come in at a designated time, knowing a pharmacist is available for those hours to administer the shot.

Patients will be screened for symptoms of COVID-19 and should expect to answer questions so a pharmacist can determine whether they are eligible for the publicly funded flu shot.

Former NPA city councillor George Affleck announced Tuesday that he will be the candidate for the B.C. Liberals in Vancouver-Fairview, which is the riding currently held by high-profile cabinet minister George Heyman.

“It’s opportunistic of the NDP party, for sure,” said Affleck of the governing party, which is currently ahead of the Liberals in public opinion polls. “It’s completely for their own self-serving purposes, and not fair for the people of this province.”

“I have a long history in that riding,” said Affleck, a downtown resident whose Curve Communications business is located in the riding, as is city hall where he served two terms on council between 2011 and 2018. “It’s kind of a cool opportunity, so I thought I’d go for it and see what I can do.”

Horgan told reporters Monday that waiting another 12 months to call an election would be “time wasted” and that stability was needed in government to implement a pandemic recovery plan for the province.

Affleck said he has been considering a run for some time and had been approached to do so by numerous people in the Liberals, including Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson. He said he confirmed his interest with the party Monday, after Premier John Horgan called an election for Oct. 24.

Like his leader, Affleck was equally critical of Horgan for calling an election during a pandemic and breaking a fixed election date agreement that would have seen the vote held

“I believe the best way forward is to put the politics behind us,” Horgan said. “Let’s address the differences we may have now, so that we can all come together after the 24th of October and focus as we should be on the needs of all British Columbians.”

Now that a campaign is underway, Affleck said he understands the challenge of him knocking off a cabinet minister and his party defeating a government that is riding a wave of popularity.

Stanley Park reopening seawall to cyclists, full vehicle access to return

yclists will once again be allowed to ride along Vancouver's seawall beginning Saturday, Sept. 26., the Vancouver Park Board announced Friday.

Stanley Park will also be fully reinstating vehicle access to the park starting the same day, more than five

months after the Vancouver Park Board first announced it was modifying access to the popular park in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Previous years’ data shows a consistent decline in visitation to Stanley Park as the fall season approaches. With children

back in school, and with COVID protocols and behaviours in place, the data tells us we can return the park to its conventional traffic patterns," said Dave Hutch, the City of Vancouver's director of planning and park development in a release.

Stanley Park was initially closed to all vehicle traffic on April 8 of this year, in an effort to reduce congestion and allow for greater physical distancing in busy areas like the seawall, and in response to public requests for greater access to essential recreational space for cycling and walking during the early stages of the pandemic.

As the province began easing restrictions and businesses in the park began reopening, Park Drive reopened one lane of vehicle traffic on June 22. However, the seawall stayed closed to cyclists, "to allow pedestrians greater space during the busy summer months when pedestrian and cyclist traffic in the park reached an all-time high," read the City of Vancouver's release.

In July, some local businesses and groups launched a petition calling on the Park Board to allow wider access to motor vehicles in the wake of these COVID-19-related cutbacks. The Change.org campaign titled "Keep Stanley Park open for all!" was petitioning the board against lane and parking reductions that it said could limit access "for people who choose to, or must, access the park by car in favour of a second bike route," as the Vancouver Park Board began exploring the long-term feasibility of reducing vehicle traffic in Stanley Park.

“The temporary traffic management plan in Stanley Park was always just that – temporary,” said Hutch in the release.

The NHL wants fans in buildings, but the 2020-21 season will likely start with empty arenas

I

f this was a normal year, the Canucks would be a week into the NHL preseason right now. Fans would be abuzz with excitement, with opening night just around the corner at the start of October.

With the 2019-20 season coming to a late conclusion in a quarantine bubble in Edmonton, the 2020-21 season is stuck in limbo. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman answered questions from the media about next season prior to the start of the Stanley Cup Finals but was light on specifics.

But 2020 isn’t a normal year. Understatement.

Instead, the Stanley Cup has yet to be awarded and the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning are still battling in the Finals in the final week of September. It’s an utterly unique circumstance brought on by a global pandemic.

“Anything that anybody suggests, reads, writes, or commentates about next season is nothing more than speculation,” says Bettman.

Whatever else you might say about Bettman, the man covers his bases like a baseball grounds crew in a rainstorm. The one option he missed is singing, so if anyone belts out a melody full of details about the 2020-21 season, pay attention, because it is sure to be cold-hard fact, with no speculation involved.

“December 1st has always been a notional date,” Bettman added. “I would not be surprised if it slips into later December. It could slip into January… There’s still too much we don’t know.”

Bettman has good reason to hedge his bets. It’s impossible to know what the situation will be like with COVID-19 in the next couple of months when it seems to change on a weekly or even daily basis.

One major unknown is whether the border between Canada and the United States will even be open by December. The border closure between the two countries has been extended to October 21st and could be extended again. That closure could put a crimp in the NHL’s plans, as it did for the Toronto Blue Jays, who were forced to relocate their home games to Buffalo, New York when the Canadian government refused to let the team travel back and forth from the US. That won’t fly with the NHL and its seven Canadian teams.

Meanwhile, there’s the open question of whether fans will be in arenas for the 2020-21 season. The fan-less spectacle of the playoffs has mostly worked as a televised event, but a full 82game schedule without fans in buildings is a harder sell.

“Our game draws its energy, our players draw their energy off the best fans in all of sports,” said Bettman in a later interview on Sportsnet 650.

The game also draws its revenue from the fans, with Bettman stating, “Attendance, directly and indirectly, impacts at least 50 percent of our revenues.” As much as the NHL wants to get fans back in arenas for atmosphere and energy, there is a lot of financial pressure to do so as well.

The NHL will also be forced to abide by local government restrictions. BC currently prohibits public gatherings larger than 50 people. An NHL game exceeds that limit with just the players, coaches, and officials, let alone the larger support staff that would be involved, so you can forget about fans. It’s an open question of when that restriction will be lifted.

New ramen spot at UBC dishing up wickedly good noodles

T

hat telltale chill in the air and leaves gently rustling from limb to ground have me thinking about pretty much one thing only: RAMEN.

Sure, I'll enjoy a decaf double tall no whip oat milk pumpkin spice latte like just about anyone would this time of year. But I'd much rather slurp up springy noodles swimming in a sea of salty, spicy, fragrant broth, thank you very much.

Ramen is an established entity here in Vancouver, and fans divide themselves with a loyalty akin to Harry Potter houses. There's the Danbos, the Marutamens, the Santoukas. And there is always another new ramen spot opening up - often it's down on Ramen Row on Robson in the West End, but occasionally a new one bravely enters the fold and ramenheads will seek them out.

ICBC spends $100,000 on reflective armbands

he Insurance Corp. of British Columbia (ICBC) spent $1 each on 100,000 reflective pedestrian armbands awarding the contract in April, a month before Attorney General David Eby said the provincial insurer’s financial picture was unknown.

A request for proposals (RFP) for the reflectors was published February 5 with the competition closing nine days later. The request said delivery was to be over 12 months.

ICBC said in the RFP that the armbands are distributed through October for fall traffic safety campaigns.

“Distracted driving and failing to yield the right-of-way are the top contributing factors for drivers in crashes with pedestrians,” the RFP said. “Even when drivers proceed with

caution, it's hard to see pedestrians at this time of year when visibility is poor.

“Because of this, ICBC conducts an annual pedestrian safety campaign with advertising and social media. And with the help of community policing volunteers and TransLink, we distribute the coveted safety reflectors throughout the month of October.”

James said the loss was $298 million.

The supplier chosen for the armbands was Salmon Arm’s C Me Pedestrian Reflectors.

Eby said in April that ICBC was facing a billion-dollar loss on its investments but later said a decline in claims due to the pandemic could yield a surplus.

For the fiscal year ending March 2019, ICBC spent $141,157, corporation financial records show.

Break-ins to Vancouver businesses 'reversing' since early months of pandemic

During the first half of 2020 break-ins nearly doubled, to 47.9 according to statistics shared Thursday by VPD Deputy Chief Howard Chow.Chow said businesses most affected were those in Chinatown, the West End, Yaletown, and Strathcona.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) report examined crime statistics from Jan. 1 to June 30, comparing them to 2019.

In March, many of those businesses boarded up their windows as a guard against crime.

The VPD said it took significant measures to combat commercial crime during a time when provincial measures were in effect – including stores and restaurants limiting

their capacity, and bars closing – to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

But since a majority of businesses are now operational, June break-ins lessened across the board compared to last year, according to newer VPD figures.

In the police district that encompasses the West End, Yaletown, Coal Harbour, and the Central Business District of Vancouver – which was initially hit hard by criminals – break-ins reduced by 10.5 per cent this August.

President of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA), Charles Gauthier, attributed the crime reduction to the return of business owners, staff, and customers to the area.

“We did see a spike in commercial break and enters in late March and early April, the crime was opportunistic. As an organization we added overnight security patrols,” elaborated Gauthier.

“Now we’re seeing a reversal of those [break-ins],” he said, noting that crime still occurs.

The president mentioned a few dozen stores and restaurants in the area that have gone out of business.

“The ones that could open did,” he told Vancouver Is Awesome.

The Compass Cards will be available in the fall of 2021, with analysis happening during spring before any broader rollout of discounted passes is available for low-income residents of Vancouver.

But, he said, he and the party have more than a month to convince voters to support the Liberals, particularly business owners hit hard by the pandemic-influenced closures and physical distancing measures.

“If you’re struggling like so many people are in this province, it’s really unfair to put us through this right now and I hope the NDP gets punished for it,” Affleck said.

The party has yet to roll out a platform, but Affleck said his focus will be on “good governance, transparency and finances” — areas of interest for him when he served on council, with him regularly challenging the then-Vision Vancouver administration to keep taxes low.

Transportation will also be an issue for Affleck, with the subway being built through the riding and Broadway being one of the busiest bus corridors in North America.

Affleck has kept a high profile on social media and working in different forms of media since he left city hall. He has appeared on CTV as a political pundit and is a co-host with Jody Vance on a podcast about politics called Unspun.

and former councillors Suzanne Anton and George Chow all made the successful move from city hall to the B.C. legislature, with Sullivan (Vancouver-False Creek) and Chow (Vancouver-Fraserview) seeking re-election; Chow defeated Anton in the 2017 provincial election.

The NDP’s Spencer Chandra Herbert served as a park board commissioner before being elected in the Vancouver-West End riding, where he first won a byelection in 2008 and is seeking re-election Oct. 24.

The Vancouver-Fairview riding, which used to be held by Gregor Robertson before he became mayor in 2008, has not been a stronghold for either the NDP or Liberals, having been represented by both parties over the years.

Liberal Margaret MacDiarmid, who served as health minister, was the MLA for the riding until Heyman beat her in 2013.

Heyman, the former executive director of the Sierra Club of BC, was re-elected in 2017 and served as Horgan’s minister of environment and climate change strategy until an election was called Monday.

His jump from municipal politics to provincial politics is not unprecedented.

In fact, Vancouver city council has been a farm team of sorts for budding provincial politicians, including former mayors Gordon Campbell and Mike Harcourt, who both later served as premiers.

The Liberals’ candidate in the VancouverFairview race in 2017 was Gabe Garfinkel, who finished 9,436 votes to Heyman’s 16,035.

The Greens’ Louise Boutin finished a distant third.

Two years in jail for man accused of robbing Vancouver convenience store

man has been sentenced to two years in jail after pleading guilty to committing a violent robbery in Vancouver last year.

fter spending five weeks sick in bed, Ian Rintoul says he won't hesitate to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Back in March, the 40-year-old Nanaimo man says he woke up one day with a sore throat. While he didn't think much of it at the time, his condition rapidly worsened.

Rintoul says he's had bronchitis, but this illness felt decidedly different. He wasn't coughing anything up, but he could feel there was something in his lungs.

"It was like I was trying to breathe through gravel," he tells Vancouver Is Awesome in a phone interview.

With the constant sound of his heart beating in his left ear, as well as a pounding sensation in the left side of his throat, Rintoul says sleep was his only reprieve. He was also severely fatigued. During the five weeks that he spent in bed, he speculates that he was only awake a couple of hours each day.

Rintoul adds that spending so much time alone was hard, especially since his bedroom - which is in a basement suite - has no windows.

"For a little over five weeks, I did not see a living creature, other than my landlady's dog and a few spiders," he explains.

Although he was never tested for COVID-19, Rintoul feels sure he had the virus. He has no pre-existing conditions and says he has never been anywhere near as sick as he was this year.

Before he became extremely ill, Rintoul says he was brushed off when he sought medical attention at a local walk-in clinic.

"On March 12th I saw a doctor. He barely examined me and said it was probably a lung infection. Sent me home," he says.

Despite profusely sweating, barely eating and feeling incredibly weak for over a month, He did not see another doctor. Before going to see someone, he hoped to speak to a health care professional on the phone who could

"I dialled 8-1-1 probably 400 times. I always got a busy signal," he laments. "So, because I got sick at the beginning of all this, everyone was pumping out information, but I could never get through. Everyone was told to call that number, but you couldn't get through."

Rintoul's employer - a charitable organization that he wishes not to mention - encouraged him to recover completely before returning to work. After the five weeks he spent in bed, he spent an additional two weeks at home slowly regaining his strength. Despite this recovery period, he says he was still extremely weak upon returning to the workplace. In fact, he says he was so weak when he went back to work that his employer offered him more time to recover. He'd lost just under 20 pounds, and he would get out of breath quickly.

"Mentally, the isolation screwed me up for quite a while. I'm getting past it, but only with the help of the counselling provided by my work," he says.

Moving forward, Rintoul hopes to participate in a COVID-19 antibody study. An antibody test, also known as a serology test, looks for specific antibodies in your blood. The test is useful because it shows if you have had the infection in the past, even if you had only mild symptoms. However, antibody testing is only being used right now for limited clinical and research uses and select outbreak investigations.

Rintoul underscores that everyone should take this disease seriously. While the worst is behind him now, he says the experience changed him. In his darkest moments, he feared for his life.

"There were a few times when I woke up and kind of accepted, 'This is the day I might die.' The hospital is only about 10, maybe seven minutes from my house, but there were several days I felt that way.

"It's serious and it can affect anyone."

MARKETPLACE KUNISS, Helen L. September 9, 2020 On September 9, 2020, Lena (Helen) Kuniss ( Nee Thiessen ) of Vancouver British Columbia, passed away peacefully at The Cedars at Beulah Gardens at the age of 87. Helen was born on September 29, 1932, in Rosenthal (Chortitza, Russia) to John Thiessen and Anna Peters. Helen was recently predeceased by her husband of 68 years, and is survived by sons, Gerry and Allan; daughters−in−law, Deirdre, Lesley, and Jennifer; grand−daughters, Melissa, Kimberly, Brittany, and Jaymi; step−grandchildren, Griffin and Aidan; great−grandson, Payton; and many nephews and nieces. Helen was predeceased by her brother, Jacob; sister, Anna; and is survived by her sister, Kay. Not long after arriving in Canada, Helen met and married the love of her life, Gordon at the Alpen Club in Vancouver on December 17, 1952. Helen worked at many jobs including the iconic Save−On−Meats on Hastings Street in Vancouver.

Mom was the matriarch of our home, and doting on her husband and children were her passions.

Mom attended every soccer game, baseball game, and any other event her kids were participating in.

She was always there for us, whether to pour a cup of always−available coffee or to lend an ear for a heartfelt chat. Her home was a warm gathering spot for her kids and their friends to gather. The family was ever so important to her, and especially sharing her incredible meals and baking for family gatherings. Mom loved to bowl and for more years than can be remembered, she went to Grandview Lanes to bowl with her friends from the Laura Secord Bowling League. After her grandchildren were born Oma loved to spend time either babysitting, going to their events, making gingerbread houses, or going to the cabin at Birkenhead. Mom’s most cherished time of year was Christmas and being surrounded by family on Christmas Eve. Each year one of her grandchildren was selected to read the ’Twas the night before Christmas’ and waited to hear if Santa had arrived.

In the last few years, mom loved to volunteer at the Collingwood Neighborhood House, where she socialized with many dear friends. Despite her health challenges from childhood on, Oma was as tough as nails. She fought through her many illnesses with stalwart determination, grace, and good humour, often stating "and this too will pass".

We were truly lucky to call her Mom/Oma and she will be missed, but more importantly, fondly remembered.

Due to the COVID restrictions, there can be no church service. On September 22, 2020, at 1 pm, a short service was held graveside at Oceanview Cemetery, 4000 Imperial St, Burnaby. A special thank−you to the many personal caregivers, Dr. Rusnak and staff at the Cedars Care home.
