With mild temperatures and the soft golden rays of afternoon sun, fall offers plenty of opportunity to explore. From coastal escapes to mountain adventures, there’s no shortage of incredible BC getaways fit for this time of year. Here are five trip ideas to get you on the road.

Remember to plan ahead and travel responsibly.

Discover the Unexpected in The Fraser Valley The scenic Fraser Valley features its own set of charms. Hope delivers on hundreds of kilometres of designated trails, including the hike to Hope Lookout for valley views, and a self-guided Rambo Walking Tour of the old blockbuster’s film setting. Nature photography enthusiasts appreciate the Fraser Canyon for its labyrinth of historic bridges, narrow rock gorges, and dazzling lakes. The Mighty Fraser Circle Route provides unique highlights too, including Manning Park Resort’s dark sky astronomy, and the fabled golden larch of fall.

Whistler | BC Ale Trail

Thompson Okanagan | Kari Medig

Live the Country Life A rustic retreat offers a chance to get back to the basics. To experience an original pioneer homestead, head to one of BC’s many guest ranches like Graham Dunden Guest Ranch, located east of 70 Mile House, where you can saddle up to explore the Cariboo’s secluded pastures and the gem-coloured waters of Green Lake. For a more modern take, familyrun ranch Myra Canyon Ranch features contemporary furnishings, mountain- and e-bike rentals, and picturesque horse rides overlooking Okanagan Lake. Retreat to Mountain Hot Springs BC’s hot springs resorts make for a particularly stunning stay in fall. Bask in mineral-rich thermal pools as snow starts blanketing the mountains at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, and bighorn sheep come out to graze at Radium Hot Springs. On Arrow Lake, at Halcyon Hot Springs, guests can enjoy exclusive access to three outdoor wellness pools before turning in for the evening at a luxury chalet.

Find Serenity on the Sea-to-Sky Relax and renew in Vancouver, Squamish or Whistler. A stay at downtown Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim starts slowly with breakfast in bed and personalized care at Willow Stream Spa. Go underground at the Britannia Mine Museum, south of Squamish (advance booking recommended). Or, head to Whistler to take in the region’s celebrated works of art at the Audain Art Museum, followed by a visit to the Scandinave Spa Whistler’s quiet sanctuary of hydrotherapy baths. Seek Seaside Tranquility Time spent near the ocean can be rejuvenating, be it a city stay exploring Victoria, or a visit to one of the many coastal towns along BC’s rugged shoreline. Parksville offers nearly 20 kilometres of soft, sandy beaches. Salty ocean air and goats grazing the rooftop of the Old Country Market in nearby Coombs are some of this town’s perks. Order ahead, then drive a half-hour north for the famed oysters from Fanny Bay Oysters Seafood Shop. For a tranquil retreat, wind down at the Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort.

Hootsuite tangled up in controversial contract with ICE

T

“This is not the kind of company I came to lead. I — and the rest of the management team — share the concerns our people have expressed. As a result, we have decided to not proceed with the deal with ICE,” he said in a statement. But no formal notice of backing out of the contract has been issued to ICE, a spokeswoman tells BIV. “At this time, ICE has not received formal notification from the contract awardee that the company is unable to meet the contract

SUBMITTED

he U.S. law enforcement agency at the centre of employee backlash at a Vancouver tech company says it hasn’t received notice from Hootsuite Inc. that it’s backing out of its contract. U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently awarded a US$500,000 contract for Hootsuite through a thirdparty vendor. But multiple employees at the social media management company

took to Twitter and Facebook last week to express exasperation at the business arrangement. CEO Tom Keiser, who joined in July, revealed Thursday (September 24) Hootsuite was backing out of the deal amidst a “divided company.”

requirements,” Mary Houtmann said in an email Friday. “But if true, it’s disappointing that they would not support our workforce that is committed to protecting the homeland; taking gang members, drug traffickers

and rapists off the streets; and protecting children from trafficking and exploitation.”

to follow-up inquiries from BIV following Keiser’s Thursday statement and ICE’s Friday email.

The American law enforcement agency has been the focus of criticism, controversy and outcry the past two years amid Trump administration policies separating migrant parents from their children at the U.S.-Mexican border. Hootsuite’s products had been tapped to manage ICE’s social media accounts “that help educate the public about the work done every day by our law enforcement officers,” according to Houtmann. “That we are eagerly accepting money from an organization that is allegedly subjecting its female detainees to forced hysterectomies, that has a documented history of locking children in cages, that tears families apart and destroys lives is devastating and disgusting in a way … that I can’t effectively put into words,” Hootsuite product trainer Sam Anderson tweeted Wednesday, referring to recent media reports of forced procedures. “Even more heartbreaking is that multiple members of our Mexico City support team have relayed their personal experiences being targeted and harassed by ICE and our leadership team chose to push this deal through anyway.”

The company originally sent a response to BIV Wednesday evening implying it had no involvement with ICE before tweeting the following morning it “has decided not to do business with” ICE.

Hootsuite has not responded

Keiser followed up with a statement shortly thereafter, confirming the company had indeed previously signed a contract with ICE. “Although I typically would not make a public statement about our customers and our contracts, in this instance I feel it’s important. Recently our company has had to go through the process of determining whether we would engage in a contract with [ICE]. That sparked a great deal of internal conversation — and the formation of a committee to further that discussion and consider all points of view,” he said. “Considering the various factors, including our belief in the power of communications and social engagement to break down barriers, and supported by the set of objective guidelines that emerged from that committee, we made the decision to proceed with signing a contract with ICE.” But he said in the Thursday

statement the decision created “broad emotional and passionate reaction” over the previous 24 hours that “spurred additional dialogue.” Following the dialogue, he said the company decided it wouldn’t do business with ICE. Data shared on the U.S. government’s official awards management website shows more than US$500,000 in Hootsuite licences were being delivered to ICE via FCN Inc., a Marylandbased provider of technology services. That contract was signed September 18, 2020. Keiser, who lists his current location as San Francisco on LinkedIn, is the former chief operating officer of software firm Zendesk Inc. While Hootsuite had been at the centre of speculation for a possible initial public offering for years, Reuters reported in 2018 the company had engaged Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to inquire about a potential sale. But the process was abandoned just before Christmas 2018 when Hootsuite determined offers were less than the US$750 million it was aiming for, according to a January CONTINUE ON PAGE 5

Swedish-born vocalist is taking to the steps of Vancouver’s Art Gallery on Friday, Oct. 2 to sing with other musicians in the face of a busking ban currently in effect throughout the city. Typically, nearby sidewalks on the 800-block of Robson Street would be fair game for a musician like Henrik to make a profit from entertaining strangers on the street. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Henrik wouldn’t have had to purchase a permit for that location. However, as of Sept. 8, the City of Vancouver indefinitely banned street entertainment and busking due to “public health and physical distancing requirements,” according to its website. This has squashed a vital stream of income for local musicians, Herik said – most who have already lost paying gigs due to pandemic – and some who plan to join him in protest on Oct. 2.

“I see busking as a safe and essential form of entertainment,” Henrik told Vancouver Is Awesome. "If it’s done outdoors, for a short period of time, and listeners socially distance.” The live music demonstration will see Vancouver bands DACEY and Gnarfunkel perform alongside Henrik from 3 to 6 p.m. "It will be a socially-distant set," said Henrik, who plans to hand out face masks. The bands will play on behalf of artists they know who relied on busking hours a day to make ends meet. "These aren't the people we should be

banning right now," he said. The 23-year-old musician said he's no stranger to the dangers of COVID-19. "My mom had COVID-19 back win Sweden and I have had friends who died from the disease," Henrik mourned. "I just know in situations like this when times are hard, live music is one of the only safe ways people can feel connected." The bands are protesting peacefully to push the city to include arts, music, and culture in its COVID-19 recovery plan.

Bonnie Henry says Thanksgiving gatherings are a go

hanksgiving dinners can go ahead this year, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry relayed to the public last week. However, the doctor clarified that in homes th hrough hout th he province on Oct. 12, festivities must be limited to a small number of family members or friends. “T “Thanksgiving T is an import rtant t time for us to remember and give thanks for those who are closest to and we’ve been talki king i about that quite a bit,” Henry ryy said. “T “There’s T no reason at all why you can’t have Thanksgiving with your household bubble, your contacts, your close, small number of people.” She emphasized this year's holiday is no time for large gatherings.

“We would not be recommending either that you have a large family gathering, where particularly elders and seniors come from other places and get together with people who have had other types of contacts,” she explained. “This is a year to participate remotely with “T your family, the people you’re closest to, to make sure that you can find ways to engage in these import rtant t celebrations together without putting anybody at risk.” Henry ryy also recommended B.C. families have discussions about the size of their social bubbles, and who is included in them. “A start rting t point for all of us is to remember that the more people we see, the higher our risk will be,” she added. Some workers have been affected as a result, but the core team of 55 people remain on the job, he said. On Aug. 10, 2019, the Sea to Sky Gondola fell after someone cut its cable in the early morning hours. This incident sent shockwaves around the world, and it prompted the beginning of a manhunt that would last over a year. In the meantime, the gondola would rebuild. A new cable and a brand new set of cabins arrived from abroad and were installed. On Valentine’s Day this year, with considerable fanfare, the gondola reopened. However, business resumed in fits and starts, as it had to reclose, then open, as a result for the COVID-19 pandemic. On Sept. 14, as smoke from wildfires in the United States blanketed Squamish in a thick haze, the unthinkable happened — again. The gondola’s cable was once more cut by a saboteur, and, once again, most of the gondola’s cabins were brought crashing down to the ground. At the Sept. 25 press briefing, Brown said the damage will cost millions and that up to 30 of the 39 passenger cabins may have to be replaced. “The extent of the damage is very similar to last time,” he said. SQUAMISH RCMP

W

ith no arrests made, Sea to Sky Gondola officials and RCMP are hoping that a big cash incentive can help with an investigation into the two times the Squamish gondola’s cable was deliberately cut. On Sept. 25, at a media briefing, general manager Kirby Brown announced a $250,000 reward for information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect that brought down the gondola for a second time. “The Sea to Sky Gondola are putting up a $250,000 reward for leading up to the location, arrest and conviction of the perpetrator of the acts of last summer and this year’s attack,” said Brown. "It is the last tool we can give [RCMP] to go out and get that person as soon as possible.” The reward money is being paid out of pocket by the owners, he said. “This individual has put my team and our team directly in harm’s way. This is an individual who’s a criminal who needs to be caught and brought to justice,” said Brown. “If you love this person, if you care about this person, you need to take your part to help stop them now.” He said the gondola hopes to reopen within a similar timeframe as the last, which took a little more than half a year.

The PNE plans to 'slay' Halloween 2020

H

alloween is definitely not cancelled this year, but as we all know, it's going to have to happen a little differently. While Vancouver's PNE is known for its annual "Fright Nights" scare-fest, this Halloween they plan to "slay" the season with a couple of special pandemicfriendly events. Starting Oct. 9, Playland will turn into "Slayland - Night of a Thousand Screams." There will be 20 rides up and running (including the scream-causing Beast coaster), a walk-through outdoor haunted experience, and lots of spooky decor. And how about this for a first: Slayland will also be "the first time in the PNE Halloween event history that guests will be allowed to wear costumes." Of course, there are some restrictions on costumes - face paint and costume masks are a no-go - and there will be some fun themes for costumes each weekend, like "retro" or "superheroes." Additionally, like in the summer, non-medical face masks will continue to be required in all queues and while on attractions. Ready for yet another first? Kids under 13 will be allowed (since there are no haunted houses) at Slayland, however the event remains not recommended for kids under eight. For hungry Halloween fans, there's going to be another "drive-thru experience"

available. A Taste of the PNE Drive-Thru: Tricks-and-Treats Edition is a familyoriented event that will feature live spooky characters, Halloween décor, and safe trickor-treating. Admission includes the drive-thru experience as well as a trick-or-treat bag with a selection of mini PNE goodies that includes a Halloween-themed candy apple, treat-sized popcorn, mini cotton candy, mini donuts and packaged candy. “Halloween is an incredibly important part of the year for everyone here at the PNE,” says President and CEO Shelley Frost, “and we’ve had a lot of questions and interest in our plans for 2020, given the situation with COVID-19. I’m really proud that our team has developed two very unique experiences for a wide range of guests. Although it is not possible to host our traditional Fright Nights, we have a new haunting experience and chilling décor for our young adult Fright Night fans and this year we will have a separate experience on-site aimed at children and parents who are limited in their trick-or-treat options due to the pandemic.”

A

number of billboards in Vancouver have not-so-sneakily urged residents to have fewer children. Why? To curb the world’s overpopulation problem. U.S. group World Population Balance orchestrated ads in ten high-traffic areas of the city as part of its “One Planet, One Child,” campaign to get people thinking about sustainability. One of the ads, found at a South Granville transit stop, reads like a movie poster. “Overpopulation, now showing,” it says in bold letters, with results listed as “species extinction,” “deforestation,” “pollution,” and “the climate crisis.” Another billboard, which pictures a halfnaked man and woman lying down together, spells out to passersby: “conservation begins at contraception." World Population Growth first began the ad campaign in a few American cities. Since advertising in Vancouver this month, its campaigners are hoping to spread its message of single-child families to other

Canadian cities. Executive director Dave Gardner explained, “I want the children who are brought into this world to have a bright future, one with clean air and water, a livable climate and their needs met. For that to happen, smaller families are essential.” Why Vancouver? “While Vancouver occupies an area of about 2,800 square kilometers, its footprint [the area of the planet required to provide food, water, and other resources, and to process the waste] is 36 times that,” according to the campaign’s website. “Cities like Vancouver need to rethink their economic development strategies, ceasing to pursue population growth, and begin to celebrate the trend of more couples choosing smaller families," according to a WPB public statement. The group says the earth's population – which the group estimates is approaching 8 billion – could be cut in half in the next century if everyone had just one child. By Sarah Grochowski

Uber users may need 'mask selfie' to keep riding The mask verification technology builds off previous features put in place earlier this year to ensure drivers of Uber and Uber Eats wear a mask. To date, the company says more than 3.5 million drivers and delivery people have completed more than 100 million mask verifications. The new protocol is scheduled to take effect across Canada and the U.S. by the end of September, and in Latin America and other countries after that.

ber riders throughout Metro Vancouver may now be asked to upload a quick selfie showcasing their masked mugs after the company announced it was rolling out a new mask verification protocol to help stem the spread of COVID-19 in Canada and the U.S. The so-called “rider mask verification feature” will act as a backstop for drivers who want to report a rider not wearing a mask. “The rider will be required to take a selfie with their face covered before they’re able to take another trip with Uber,” wrote a spokesperson in a written statement. The idea is to ensure the safety of everyone involved, including the next Uber driver. According to the company, the technology detects the mask as an object in the photo and “does not process biometric data."

Transforming the funeral industry with affordability and transparency A h Amherst FFunerall and d cremation i S Services i iis driven by the principle that the best service can also be simple and affordable. Founded by Scott McFarlane, Amherst is a proudly Canadian, locally owned and operated, independent business. Free of ties to large, funeral chains and other funeral homes and chapels, McFarlane was able to base the company on what he truly believed the industry was missing. In 2008, Amherst was established with the firm belief that all families should have the right to quality and affordable funeral services, without having to sacrifice the

dignity both dying di i or respect off b h the h d i and the living. Nearly 10 years later, Amherst still operates on the creed that funeral arrangements should be simple, to the point, and free of sales pitches. “We don’t pressure families,” McFarlane, the owner, funeral director and embalmer of Amherst, said. “When death is imminent, our mission is to allow the families to focus on spending precious time with their loved ones, not to rush them to the funeral home to sign arrangement paperwork and distract them with complicated decisions about costs.”

he Canucks have never had a number one defenceman in their history. They’ve certainly had some good defencemen, but a “number one defenceman” is a different beast. It takes a special amount of do-everything dominance to be considered a number one in the NHL and the phrase brings to mind players like Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris

Pronger, and Zdeno Chara. These are defencemen that eat up minutes and rack up points. A number one defenceman is one of the key ingredients for a Stanley Cup. It’s possible to win a Cup without one — the 2005-06 Carolina Hurricanes, whose best defenceman was Frantisek Kaberle, leap to mind — but it’s like making macaroni & cheese without the cheese: you can do it, but you have to work a lot harder to make up the difference and it never tastes the same. Look at the two teams that made the Stanley Cup Final this year: the Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars. The most compelling case for the most valuable player from each team can be made for their number one defenceman. Victor Hedman has been a dominant force in all situations for the Lightning. With Hedman on the ice, the Lightning have outscored their opponents by 14 goals at 5-on-5, the widest gap in the playoffs among defencemen. Miro Heiskanen leads the Stars in scoring with 26 points in 26 games, a stunning accomplishment for the second-year rearguard. His calm on the backend sets the tone for the rest of the team and his quick skates, smooth hands, and pinpoint passing is the key to their breakout. Hedman and Heiskanen have played more than anyone else in the playoffs, each averaging around 26+ minutes per game, which is what makes a number one defenceman such a crucial element of a Cup contender. Given how much time they spend on the ice, they control the flow of the game more than any other player. Hedman already has one Norris Trophy in his case

and has finished third in Norris voting three other seasons. Heiskanen is in only his second season, but is sure to compete for the Norris many times over the next decade. Not only has no Canuck ever won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenceman, no Canuck has ever even been a finalist for the award. The closest was Ed Jovanovski, who finished a distant sixth in voting in 2002 and 2003. The 2010-11 Canucks made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final by substituting one of the deepest defence corps in the NHL for a number one defenceman. None of Christian Ehrhoff, Alex Edler, Kevin Bieksa, Dan Hamhuis, or Sami Salo could lay claim to being a true number one, but all of them together was nearly enough. Now, however, the Canucks finally have that missing ingredient. In his rookie season and first playoffs, Quinn Hughes was a revelation. He set a record for most postseason points from a rookie defenceman and completely changed the dynamic for the Canucks every time he stepped on the ice. The Canucks have never had a game-breaker like Hughes on the backend and he’s still just 20 years old. Already one of the best defenceman in the NHL, Hughes is only going to get better. While Hughes fell just short of the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year, he already received a handful of votes for the Norris. He’ll be competing with Heiskanen and Hedman for the Norris in the years to come, but he could also help lead the Canucks to a far bigger trophy: the Stanley Cup. Vancouver to install bus-only lanes in corridors with 'worst bus delays'

T

his fall, the City of Vancouver is partnering with TransLink to pilot bus-priority measures on corridors with the worst bus delays.

In a statement, the City says the project follows several successful road-reallocation initiatives aimed at supporting residents and businesses during the pandemic. “It’s critical people have efficient options for getting around the city as the economy recovers,” says Lon LaClaire, General Manager of Engineering Services.

Patios: Fast-tracking the permitting process so restaurants can build outdoor patios and extending permits beyond Oct. 31.

walking and biking. Converting eastbound lanes on Beach Avenue to a biking and walking path.

• Public plazas: Creating outdoor seating areas for people to rest, eat and visit.

• Room to Queue: Widening sidewalks for queuing at businesses by repurposing curb lanes.

• Room to Move: Turning select residential streets into Slow Streets by allowing local traffic only to create space for people

• Room to Load: Creating short-term loading/pick-up zones near businesses with high turnover and increased curbside needs.

With funding from TransLink, bus-priority measures will be implemented by the City on four key corridors that have had some of the region’s worst bus delays for several years. The corridors include Granville Street, Robson Street, Main Street and Kingsway, and 49th Avenue. The low-impact, temporary measures include: • Extending sidewalks/curbs at bus stops to reduce the need for buses to merge in and out of traffic, increasing sidewalk space and freeing up curb space for more parking. • Small changes at intersections to reduce delays to buses and other vehicles. • Creating bus lanes to give priority to buses over regular traffic, parking and curbside access. “These are some of the many important changes to transit that our regular riders will see as they continue to return to the system,” says Kevin Desmond, CEO of TransLink. “In collaboration with residents, businesses and community stakeholders, these bus priority initiatives will help improve the reliability of buses, support economic recovery and give transit and our cities the best chance of thriving.”

SUBMITTED

The bus-priority projects are the latest measure the City is taking to lessen the impact of the pandemic on residents and businesses. Previous road-reallocation projects include:

T

he Reef Restaurant has announced its permanent closure after more than two decades of serving Caribbean cuisine to eaters on “antique row." Owner Simon Cotton shared the news on social media Thursday: “Huge thanks to the community who supported us through neighborhood changes, recessions, and during the pandemic,” Cotton wrote. “It is with a heavy heart that I share that Sunday, Oct. 4 will be our last day of service.” The jerk and fried chicken joint, located at 4172 Main St., has been in business for 21 years. The business had been listed for sale for some time. Cotton said, “We have been proud to serve Vancouver a modern taste of the islands over these many years.”

“These measures will help ensure transit remains a good option for the tens of thousands of people who use Vancouver buses every day to get to their jobs and to access businesses and essential services. By ensuring transit remains a reliable option, we can better manage road congestion at a time when supporting the movement of people and goods has never been more important.”

Many cities across North America are rolling out bus-priority measures to improve trip times for customers to ensure bus travel remains a reliable option for residents. Vancouver’s pilot will run for a year so staff can monitor the impacts and benefits, and collect feedback from citizens and businesses, before making decisions about possible permanent changes. Snap Election could slow down pandemic response on critical issues

T

he calling of a snap election has raised concerns from worries about the safety of voting during Covid-19, to putting politics front and centre in the grip of a global pandemic, and leaving the cross-party collaboration seen during the response to this health crisis behind. As a city councillor, I see the impact firsthand. Dropping the writ for a provincial election effectively shuts down key discussions Vancouver needs to have with the Province, including on the Strathcona Park encampment and how the City and Province could come together on solutions to provide timely relief to campers in the largest tent city in the country, as well as to area residents as the weather turns colder, sanitation conditions worsen and crime increases. As one resident puts it, the snap election is the icky icing on the rotten 2020 cake we’re all being served. Not to mention that the coming weeks and months are mission critical for our small businesses’ survival. Programs like CERB and the CECRA - the well-intended but unsuccessful commercial rent assistance initiative - are ending and evolving. We’ll all be watching anxiously to see how residents

and small businesses fare. The ability of all levels of government to respond quickly in their respective roles has been a critical part during these unprecedented times. Consider the temporary expansion of restaurant patios in Vancouver. We did our part to get the program going as fast as possible with city staff moving with rapid speed to expedite approvals. But we also needed the Province’s help to amend liquor regulations to expand restaurants’ service areas beyond their existing footprints to make it work. Without that program, many restaurants say they wouldn’t be operating now. The economics with 50% capacity restrictions just don’t add up for many. Recently, Vancouver

Council approved my motion to extend temporary patios into fall and winter months. Luckily, we received Provincial liquor extension approval literally right before the writ dropped. These are the kind of relief measures that could literally be left hanging while we deal with this snap election. With surveys showing over half of restaurants could fail in the next 90 days, not to mention other sectors, every week matters to keeping the doors open. The ability to shift policy quickly matters. We’re not just talking about a month until election day October 24; the question is when is postelection going to be? Elections BC shows over 3.4 million registered voters and the number of voters

going for mail-in ballots will be the highest it’s ever been; up to 30 to 35 percent of ballots could be cast by mail. Mail-in ballots could take two weeks or more to be counted not considering close races in competitive ridings. So that puts us well into November before we’d even have a new government sworn in. That’s two more months of rent payments for small business, weeks of Strathcona residents feeling unsafe in their neighbourhood and homes, and of unsheltered campers exposed to cold and rainy weather unless the city goes it alone. I’d rather see a sitting government in place to help steer through choppy waters and navigate the uncertain seas ahead. Cooperation between all three levels of government has been crucial for responding to the pandemic driven economic and social challenges. Since we can’t jointly move forward with new initiatives or funding while the Province is in caretaker mode, we’ll just have to hold on tight and hope we don’t have curveballs thrown at us during a second phase. The project, entitled The Group Effort Initiative, is looking to match people who are Black, Indigenous, people of colour or people from marginalized communities with an opportunity to work as a trainee on the production team for the Deadpool star's Untitled Netflix/Time Travel Project. "We want to provide an opportunity for candidates to have real experience in the entertainment industry that will open new doors and lead to future jobs through a wider professional network," read the description. While specific roles haven't been determined yet, Reynolds hopes to "find strong candidates and place them in the most appropriate department for their growth."Reynolds is covering all of the trainees' wages, as well as their travel expenses and accommodation. Candidates must also submit a one-way video interview, which means they'll record their video interview answers and then submit them before the deadline (Oct. 1). In a video, Reynolds states that "Making a film is a group effort, but for entirely too long that group has systemically excluded Black, Indigenous, people of colour and several other marginalized communities. "This is a global problem which will not be fixed overnight, but change can start locally and immediately." The beloved Canadian actor also notes that the film will only move ahead "COVID willing, which is a weird thing to say." Reynolds says that anyone, regardless of age, should apply to the film because it is "never too late." "I myself am actually way older than I appear on set, so you're going to get to see what Ryan Reynolds looks like without the full...you know...beauty make up," quips the funnyman. Back in August, Premier John Horgan asked B.C.-raised Hollywood heavyweights Reynolds and Seth Rogen to help him encourage young people in the province to stop partying during the pandemic. "This is a call-out to Deadpool right now," Horgan said. “Ryan, we need your help out here, get in touch with us.” The Deadpool star responded to Horgan's plea in a Tweet, stating, "I got your message about the thing.
