arlier this month, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football Leagu gue (CFL) played in front of almost 30,000 fans at IG Field. The game was as the first major test of the way in which “vaccine passport r s” can be used to allow Canadians to gain access to specific events during the COVID-19 pandemic. Spectators were only allowed inside the home stadium of the Blue Bombers if they presented their provincial Immunization Card and a matching photo identification. They also had to wear a mask in all indoor common areas. In order to further reduce the possibility of contact, only mobile tickets were allowed and all transactions at the concession stands were processed through credit, debit and digital payments. The return of sporting events to British Columbia was slightly different. BC Place was not allowed to have full capacity for the first home
games of the CFL’s BC Lions and the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major Leagu g e Soccer (MLS). The venue recommended maskwearing and also institu t ted “cashless” concession stands, but proof of vaccination was not required for attendees. When Research Co. and Glacier Media asked British Columbians about their views on “vaccine passports” in March of this year, we found the majority of respondents agreed with the concept for different forms of human interaction. Five months later, the public’s perceptions have not budged, and support has actually risen in some cases. Practically two thirds of British Columbians (67%, up five points) support the use of “vaccine passports” in order to go to live sporting events as spectators. The numbers are remarkably similar for attendance to live concerts (66%, up four points), something that unfortunately will not be tested in the long-awaited Rolling Stones
GETTY
Vast majority in B.C. support use of vaccine passports for sporting events, concerts, gyms
concert in Vancouver that was summarily cancelled a few weeks ago. British Columbians also remain supportive of “vaccine passports” to be able to visit a gym or fitness facility (63%, up one point). This month, we see a higher level of support to rely on
a system that ensures only fully immunized British Columbians can go to the theatre or cinema (62%, up six points) and also to work at an office (63%, up five points). There are huge implications on these last two interactions, as we await the release of motion
pictu t res that will desperately seek paying customers at the multiplex and with many adult residents of the province pondering just how many days they will be able to work from home. There is little movement on requiring a “vaccine pas assport r” to travel within the province (61%, up one point), but the proportion of residents who endorse the concept for a trip to other provinces jumped from 64% in March to 69% this month. Once again, the most supported idea is to use the “vaccine passport” for international travel (77%, up four points). The fact that British Columbia has not moved quickly on “vaccine passports” may be playing a role in our willingness to return to life as it was before COVID-19. Right now, a majority of the province’s residents say they are willing to enjoy a meal at a restaurant outdoors (70%) or indoors (56%), as well as to visit a barbershop or salon (54%) or a library (53%). These four activities
may allow for enough physical distancing and some reassurance if a person chooses to wear a mask. Other activities are clearly less attractive right now, with just over a third of British Columbians saying they would have no qualms about riding on the bus (37%), riding on SkyTrain (also 37%), or visiting a Community Centre (34%). Even fewer feel ready to visit a gym or fitness facility (28%), attend a concert or dance at a music venue (23%) or go to a live sporting event as a spectator (20%). This last statistic brings us back to the example set by Winnipeg. Manitoba’s provincial government was the first one to actually implement a “vaccine passport” in early June and spent weeks preparing the population for the moment when immunization would be required for specific activities. If British Columbia had jumped early on the idea of CONTINUE ON PAGE 6

ith more attacks in Stanley Park reported, the province says it’s working on new coyote management strategies.
Since last year at least 45 coyote attacks have occurred according to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS), with multiple children involved recently. Because of the “extraordinary circumstances,” the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development (FLNRORD) will be taking more direct action. “Starting very soon, [FLNRORD] will trap and euthanize up to 35 coyotes over a two-week period,” the ministry states in an email to Vancouver is Awesome. They note while coexisting with wildlife is an important principle, there is an “escalating risk to public safety.” During a press conference last week, BCCOS
Inspector Drew Milne noted that while two of the most recent attacks were on children, one involved a large adult male, showing how little fear the coyotes have for humans. Milne noted it’s unclear how many coyotes live in the park right now and notes it’s against the service’s mandate to cull the coyotes. “Trapping will be undertaken by professional contractors, employed by FLNR,” states the ministry. “The traps will be ‘live-capture’ and coyotes will be subsequently humanely euthanized.” To keep the traps from being vandalized the locations won’t be made public. The province is currently working through logistical and safety issues right now and plans to release more information in the coming days. Currently, Stanley Park is closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. due to the risk

VAX PASSPORTS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 an immunization card, instead of making an initial announcement in late August, perhaps we would see more than one in five residents saying they are ready to go to a game. Manitoba’s management of the “vaccine passport” concept and roll-out during an event attended by tens of thousands of fans provides a stark contrast to the dreadful experience of Londoners during the European soccer championships, where the final match led to more than 5,000 likely COVID-19 infections. British Columbia did not react
with the same speed as Manitoba, leading to a venue that has been partially open. If the average CFL fan in Winnipeg had found the “vaccine passport” intrusive and excessive, the stadium would not have been filled at near capacity. We have known for months that British Columbians welcome this concept. There is something to be learned from the success of jurisdictions that chose to pay attention to the wishes of the willingly vaccinated, and not to the musings of those who wander the dark corners of the web trying,
and failing, to accurately type the word “fascist” into emails and social media messages. Results are based on an online survey conducted from August 19 to August 21, 2021, among 800 adults in British Columbia. The data has been statistically weighted according to Canadian census figures for age, gender and region in British Columbia. The margin of error—which measures sample variability—is +/- 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. By Mario Canseco

Vancouver cold case files: The Night Club Murders went to check her Kitsilano basement suite a few days later, they found a carpet and a claw hammer stained with blood. Gail was a go-go dancer and her “mystery disappearance” as police called it, was immediately linked to the
murder of Barbara Ann LaRocque, a 22-year-old go-go dancer at the Syndicate City who was found strangled two months earlier, her body dumped in Langley. Gail’s body was recovered three weeks later in a creek bed 12 metres below a bridge
on the Alta Lake Road north of Squamish and found by three skiers. She had been wrapped in a blanket and tied at the ankles and knees. Her hands were tied behind her back and two pieces of clothing were tied around her neck. She had been thrown
KAREN ROGERS
G
ail Sandra Rogers, 26 known as Sam to her friends, was last seen on February 17, 1975 after working the noon to 6 p.m. shift at the Penthouse night club. Gail’s sister Karen reported her missing and when police
off the bridge. Her cause of death was multiple blows to the head by a hammer. A police source told a Vancouver Sun reporter at the time that they had heard “street rumbles” that the killings were linked to a racket preying on night club employees. Barbara had been found choked to death with her own scarf. On the day that she went missing, a witness had seen her dragged into a car outside the club on Howe Street where she worked. The police theory was that Barbara’s death was the result of a contract killing. Karen Rogers—Gail’s older sister by a year—believes her sister’s death was related to her job at the Penthouse. She believes Gail was killed by a hit-man, her murder made to look like a crime of passion. “[Police] told me they knew who did it, but they didn’t have enough evidence to arrest him,” said Karen. Gail, says Karen was very outgoing, fun and generous. “She had a great sense of humour, she was an excellent dancer, an honour student at Langley Senior Secondary and she had gone to the
Vancouver School of Art.” She had recently broken up with her long-time boyfriend. At the time of Gail’s murder, Karen was asked to go to the Vancouver Police Department and identify some items that included jewellery and a blanket that had been found with her body. Karen hasn’t heard from the police since 1975. As far as she knows, Gail’s personal items are still there, and both Gail and Barbara’s murders remain unsolved. “Just because they were dancers doesn’t mean they were bad people,” she says. “It still hurts after all these years, it doesn’t go away.” If you have any information about these murders please call the Vancouver Police Department at 604-717-3321, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or visit the website solvecrime.ca Eve Lazarus is a reporter and author, and she hosts and produces the Cold Case Canada true crime podcast. 16 new 'furry recruits' join dog therapy program streamlining BC Children's Hospital’s intake process so that these new furry recruits can bring more puppy love to hospital staff. "With fewer direct patient visits during the pandemic, Lisa and I saw the opportunity to connect our pet therapy teams with staff," Vallance said. "So far, the response has been fantastic and we continue to witness the healing power of pet therapy.” "Staff are given the chance to slow down, be present, and receive some unconditional love from a dog," Knight said. "I see colleagues come together to smile and laugh with each other. I hear comments like, 'This is just what I needed' and 'I can't stop smiling.'" The streamlining came in the form of a test established to directly accept applications to the pet therapy program called the Canine Good Neighbour test. This summer, the 16 determined pups went through the 12-step, noncompetitive test to assesses
the handler and dog's relationship and their ability to perform basic exercises and demonstrate good manners. Not all the dogs passed, but the hospital states they are welcome to come back to try again. "This is going to allow us to recruit and increase the number of pet therapy teams that we can bring to our campus," said Vallance. "And in doing so, we can continue to develop something special for our Pets Assisting with

We ate and reviewed McDonald's Spicy McNuggets so you don't have to
Tuesday was the big day, so we went and bought the just-reeleased McNuggets so that the expert r paanel we assembled could review them. Heading up our panel is V.I.A. reporter Brendan Kergin, who has held occupations at esteemed estab blishments such as Romeo's Pizza an nd the snack stand at All Fun Waterslides in Victoria. V.I.A. video reporter Thor Diakow, who self lf-identifies as "aa frequent purveyor of fast food," is the secon nd member. Lastly, me, becau use I was the one who went to the drivee-thru with my credit card,
and I once reviewed McDonald's fish and chips.
PRESENTATION While they look almost identical to normal Chicken McNuggets, they have a slightly different hue. Kergin describes them as "orange-er" than their traditional counterparts. Diakow wonders aloud if they were simply cooked longer; Kergin then explains the science behind deep frying, and that they would be darker brown if that were the case. He surmises that some sort of colouring has been added to them. We dig in.
BOB KRO NBAUER
C
anadian n Twitter was alight last weeek as users managed to get "MccPizza" trending after fast food d chain McDonald's announced that "THE THING U HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR ARRIVES 08.31.2021" Many people, of course, hoped that they were bringing baack their somewhat legendary r pizza. Some wished it was the McDLT. Otherss expressed their hope that the McRi Rib was coming back. Seeing as I have exclusive sources in places where otheer journalists do not (a 13-year-old friend of our family got a job at McDonald's last month) I was sitting on a scoop that the thiing people had apparently been aski k ng for was Spicy Chicken McNuggets. How wever, I kept my word to my man on thee inside and didn't let it out before they were officially released.
TASTE All members of the panel agree that the McNuggets are not at all spicy, but do have a hint of pepper taste. It is agreed upon that they are "suburban spicy," or how you might expect your aunt in Aldergrove to spice up a meal. Kergin says you could feed them to a toddler, and everyone nods in agreement. Upon opening the Spicy Habanero sauce packets that accompany our meals, a strong, tangy smell of tartar sauce fills the room, and a consensus is again reached; it tastes terrible and should be avoided at all costs. However, the new Spicy Buffalo sauce is an instant hit among all three members
of our panel. Kergin says it reminds him of Dairy ryy Queen's FlameThrower Sauce, and we all give it a thumbs up. If there's anything great about this meal, it's this sauce.
THE VERDICT Would we order these again? I vote no, because I feel the spice (or lack thereof) is a gimmick. I will continue to eat regular Chicken McNuggets, thank you very much. From the first bite, Diakow is unimpressed. "I call bulls**t!" he exclaims through a mouthful of breaded chicken.

His complaint is that he wants them to be truly spicy and that they fail to deliver on that promise. He'll also stick with traditional nugs. Kergin's disapproval is more subdued, as he says he would certainly get something with the Spicy Buffalo sauce on it in the future, but likely not these particular nuggets. While the Spicy Chicken McNuggets are not actually spicy, we all grew from this shared experience, and it brought us closer together as a team of experts. By Bob Kronbauer
Offerings include loaded savoury breakfast waffles, like the "Garden Blossom," decked out with salad, grilled squash and tomato, feta cheese, and balsamic dressing. Canffle also makes eggs benedict dishes loaded onto waffles, as well as waffles with omelettes, or gooey "melts" that pretty much turn the waffle into a pizza - in fact, "pizza" is one of the flavour options. If you prefer your waffles on the sweet side, there's a whole menu section for "dessert" waffles, too. These
waffles are piled high with ice cream, whipped cream, and toppings like seasonal berries or a caramelized banana, each with its own distinct extra sweet touches. In addition to plated all-day brunch waffles, Canffle is making treat-y "donut" waffles in a variety of flavours, as well as "Croffles," which are - if you haven't guessed waffled croissants. To drink, you'll find beverages like coffee and espresso drinks, teas, and hot chocolate. By Lindsay William-Ross

Fishing Families: How a local seafood network is thriving
W
hile many Canadian food industries have struggled during the pandemic, one is actually thriving. Alternative seafood networks have proven extremely resilient and sustainable in the midst of COVID-19. A recent study from the University of Maine and University of Guelph found community-supported fisheries in North America have experienced unprecedented growth in the last year and a half. So just what is an alternative seafood network? "Traditionally, people who lived in coastal communities knew people who fished
and so they would get their seafood directly at the docks from fishing families. Seafood is vastly different today. The seafood we get in grocery stores is imported from the other side of the world and the story is lost," explains Skipper Otto co-founder and CEO Sonia Strobel. False Creek's Skipper Otto supports Canadian fishing families through a unique seafood-buying experience. Members buy shares at the start of the fishing season. Fishers get economic certainty and stability, while members have access to local, ethically-sourced food. Orders of wild, traceable seafood can be picked up at multiple locations across Canada.
Skipper Otto has seen a 300 per cent growth in sales over the last 18 months. The company is currently comprised of 35 fishing families. Strobel stresses the importance of consumers wanting a personal connection with where their food comes from. "We would go into grocery stores in the early pandemic and there were empty shelves. Suddenly people were aware of supply chains for the first time. People want to support local, they want to know where their food is coming from, they want to have connections to the people producing their food." By Thor Diakow

Local artist paints house portraits for home-sellers
S
elling a home can have a certain sentimental value for some people. But what if your fond farewell to a house could be captured in a beautiful painting to enhance your memories? That's where Vancouver artist Jose De Juan comes in. The painter provides B.C. homesellers with stunning portraits of their former residences. The pieces are gifted to the sellers by De Juan's close friend, Bowen Island realtor Mary Lynn Machado. Originally from Spain, De Juan is a visual effects art animator by trade. He has worked for various studios over the years on films like Babe, Life of Pi, and The Jungle Book. He met Machado in the industry and the two worked together at Rhythm & Hues
Studios in Los Angeles. After moving to Vancouver, De Juan eventually turned to landscape painting as a hobby, using the great outdoors for his studio space. After saying goodbye to the computer animation world, Machado became a realtor and settled on Bowen Island. She utilized her fine arts skills to help market properties but was searching for something special to do for clients. When her aunt commissioned De Juan to create a painting for Machado's 50th birthday, the idea struck. Just before home-sellers move out, she purchases an original print from De Juan and gifts them a special portrait of their former property. The artist uses photos of the houses for reference. Now, after two years in real estate, Machado's business is
booming and De Juan's paintings are immensely popular. The painter stays busy, managing his time between the visual effects world and his unique side project. "I usually can fit it in and, because it's from photos, I can do it at home. So, it's not terrible; I'm glad it's a low time at work," says the artist. De Juan has crafted over 15 house paintings for sellers so far. Each takes about four to eight hours to complete. He says it can be a very emotional experience for people who receive his artwork and he's happy to pass on the mementos. "It gives me great joy. I'm happy they have them and they appreciate them. I cannot stop, so I'm gonna keep painting until my fingers fall off." By Thor Diakow

his coming November, Vancouver’s own Ryan Reynolds will appear more animated than usual.
Brent Butt, the creator of the hit Canadian comedy TV show Corner Gas Animated, recently announced that the Free Guy star will be literally drawn into the world of the show for the finale episode of its fourth and final season. “HUGE THANKS to @VancityReynolds for doing a hilarious cameo on the series finale of Corner Gas Animated,” Butt wrote on Twitter Monday (Aug. 30). Just a few hours later the Reynolds quipped back: “Thank you, Brent. This was the easiest way to have my
