The City ty of Vancouver via its communications department confirmed that Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s orders related to the new vaccine passport do not apply to public meetings at city hall. “We will need to review the detailed PHO order when it is available, however we have been advised that the proof of vaccination requirement won’t apply to formal local government business, including byelections, council/board meetings and public hearings for both council/ board members, as well as the public attending these events,” said the city in an email. "It was my second time seeing Pacific Whitesided Dolphins [in the wild]," he tells Vancouver Is Awesome. "A few years ago, I saw a couple dozen from the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo. However, being surrounded by hundreds with their acrobatics on full display was absolutely breathtaking!" With approxi x mately 300 individuals in the pod, Gert r sman says the marine display was somewhat challenging to photograph. While he has a fair amount of experience doing photography from boats, he says the sheer number of the dolphins, as well as their impressive speed, made things more difficult. "Compared to a breaching whale, the time you have to respond to captu t re a dolphin midair is much short r er. Now, the devilish behemoth is being resurrected, albeit in a different form. "The Reserection of Penis Satan" is a digital glTF file that purportedly "allows Penis Satan to transcend space and time." In a statement released last week the artist writes, “Penis Satan brought people together, talking about art. What more could you ask for in a world like ours? popular and rather raunchy Vancouver statue has been "res-erected" as NFT digit art. While it only stood in the city for a couple of days, a fire-engine red statue of the prince of darkness sporting a large erection was hard to miss. The creator — an anonymous street artist who goes by the moniker "Obsidian" — erected the soaring Satan statue near Clark Drive and Great Northern Way on Sept. 19, 2014. The eyebrow-raising artwork also made international headlines, with many people creating memes and tributes to the seven-foot-tall, fibreglass figure. However, city staff removed the devil a couple of days after. In an interview in September 2019, Obsidian told the Vancouver Courier that "Penis Satan" wasn't the name he envisioned for the creature. Instead, he fancies “East Van Satan.” “Everyone thought I was a Satanist,” he said. “That’s not it all. Not all things are so black and white.” He spent three months building the statue, which was a mannequin with some additional parts from a

Local brewers taking advantage of fresh hops season

S

ome call them the only truly seasonal beers of the year. It's fresh hops time in B.C. For brewers that means trips to farms throughout the reason to get the freshest buds they can and using them right away to capture the unique and short-lived flavours. "Traditionally hops are dried so they can be used later in the year," says beer author and BC Ale

Trail content manager Joe Wiebe. "Fresh hops, or wet hops, have to be used immediately or they spoil, usually within a day or two." Hops are one of the four main ingredients of most beers; they bring a variety of flavours and are the stars of beers like IPAs and anything described as "hoppy." They're grown on tall vines and the buds they produce in August and September have been used

to flavour and preserve beer for centuries, Wiebe explains. Once the beers are brewed it's pretty stable, he adds, so cans of fresh hop beer are fine weeks after the brew. "Fresh hops, because they're fresh, are still largely water. So you're not getting as big of a dose of bitter," says Main St. Brewing head brewer Azlan Graves. "It's a more subtle flavour, sometimes it can be

herbal depending on the variety, or juicy." Graves was up at Myrtle Meadows hops farm near Pemberton this August to pick up a load of fresh Saaz hops for Main St. Brewing fresh hops beer this year, ‘Before The Fall.' It's a hommelbier; Graves describes it as a saison developed in the southwest part of Belgium where hops are grown. It was released just before the

All spoken and written comments will be publicly accessible on the City of Vancouver’s website with your full name attached. Members of the public can listen and watch the proceedings via the City’s website or follow Twitter @VanCityClerk. If attending in person, members of the public must comply with the Public Health Order.

Vancouver City Council will hold a Public Hearing to consider zoning for these locations:

To participate in the Public Hearing process, you can register to speak beginning at 8:30 am on September 24, 2021 until 5 pm on the day of the Public Hearing:

1. Minor Amendments to FC-2 Zoning District Schedule, Sub-Area E Intensification of Employment Space in Mixed-Use Buildings (False Creek Flats Area Plan) To amend the FC-2 District Schedule of the Zoning and Development By-law to optimize the use of employment floor space, while retaining ground floor spaces for light industrial activities in Sub-area E. The amendments also include the addition of Health Care Office Use to be consistent with Sub-area A of the FC-2 District Schedule and the I-1 District Schedule. 2. Removal of the Alma Street West Side Building Line North of West Fourth Avenue To amend the Zoning and Development By-law to remove the building line on the west side of Alma Street, north of West 4th Avenue (1400 to 1900-blocks of Alma Street). The building line on Alma Street was originally intended to provide wider street right-of-way for transportation and surface utility purposes. As Point Grey Road west of MacDonald Street has been reclassified as a local street, this section of Alma Street north of West 4th Avenue no longer functions as an arterial. Council directed staff to review this particular building line, and City staff have determined that the building line can be removed. 3. CD-1 Rezoning: 357-475 West 41st Avenue To rezone 357-475 West 41st Avenue from RS-1 (Residential) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District, to permit the development of a 14-storey and 22-storey mixed-use building with a rooftop amenity floor, containing 419 secured market rental units, with 18 per cent of the residential floor area being secured as moderate income units. A height of 72.6 metres (238 feet) and a floor space ratio (FSR) of 6.32 are proposed. 4. CD-1 Rezoning: 325-343 West 41st Avenue To rezone 325-343 West 41st Avenue from RS-1 (Residential) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District, to permit the development of a 10-storey residential building

HOPS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 harvest to get younger hops, noting he prefers the slightly less mature buds for this year's beer. It makes 'Before the Fall' one of the first fresh hops beers of the season, as Saaz already has an earlier harvest date (typically Aug. 19 to 25) than other strains. Also from B.C., he notes, is the strain of yeast they used. It's a new one developed at Renaissance Yeast Labs at UBC based on European strains. Hops used to be one of the most common crops in B.C., but production fell off. "Historically hops used to be a

major crop in B.C. from the 1920s to the 1970s in the Fraser Valley," says Wiebe. "The profit part of it wasn't as good so farmers switched to other things. It was almost totally gone in the 1980s when the craft beer movement started."

there to pick up some of this year's harvest he toured the property a bit with Eelco and his daughter Noor. Other farms, Wiebe notes, have started their own breweries as well, using their own fresh hops for their own fresh hops beers. And breweries will go to great lengths to get their hands on the fresh stuff; one brewery based in Prince Rupert (Wheelhouse Brewing) has a history of stopping in Chilliwack on their way home from the Great Canadian Beer Festival in Victoria.

"Lots of little farms have started in the last 10 years." The first fresh hops beer Wiebe knows of, in B.C., was Sartori Harvest, an IPA from Driftwood Brewery in Victoria. It's become famous now, in B.C. beer circles.

More recently fresh hops beers are booming; Wiebe says each year dozens of breweries come out with creations. "We have a fresh hop festival in

Graves says there are a few he always looks forward to as well, including Satori Harvest. "Brassneck always does awesome stuff, and, as neighbours, it's awesome to go over and see. I know they were up at Myrtel Meadows getting hops as well, a couple of days after us, so I imagine they have stuff quickly on the way," he says. Stanley Park Ghost Train cancelled over coyote concerns

F

or the second year in a row, Vancouverites will not be able to enjoy one of Vancouver’s most popular Halloween events due to a different risk to public health. Out of an abundance of caution, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will not be hosting the Stanley Park Ghost Train this year, the board stated in a recent email to Vancouver Is Awesome. “Given this event takes place in the evening, and Stanley Park is temporarily closed during these hours in response to coyote activity, staff made the decision to cancel in the interest of public safety,” the statement reads. On the other hand, park staff are refocusing their efforts in the planning process for bringing back the Bright Nights Christmas-themed train event this winter. Last year the Bright Nights event was also cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but train lovers could still enjoy the spectacle from home via a nearly eightminute-long YouTube video posted which captured all the fantastical light displays in the forest. Dear Bob, the Editor-in-Chief, Thank you for your recent coverage on the protest outside B.C. hospitals last week. I went from being disheartened, exasperated, exh x austed, to confounded when I learned that the organizer of the protest was a nurse. I was a going to use my nurse’s hat to calmly write to the protesters. I would set as aside my assumptions and judgment that there is a kn k owledge deficit. I would begin with open ended questions: “I would love to better understand your feelings regarding the COVID vaccine”. I would engage in reflective listening: “Sounds like you have some reserv r ations about the efficacy of vaccines.” I would then assess the protesters’ desire and ability t to change. The purp r ose of the conversation is not to forcefu f lly convince protesters to abandon their exi x sting beliefs or to prove my perspectives. The objectives are to present the sensitive matter through the many lenses of a prism rather than merely tw t o sides of a coin. By introducing the idea that things do not necessarily have to be black or white. It is perf r ectly acceptable to have multiple shades of gray. Our world is complex hence there can be more than 2 solutions. Once I have instilled a dose of complexi x ty t to the thorny matter, I would facilitate and encourage the protesters to express their doubts and empower them to be curious to explore some of the other shades of gray. I would then conclude the conversation by showing my faith that the protesters would make the best choice for their bodies and our society t.

I don’t expect the protesters to change their viewpoints overnight. Al A l I want to achieve is to plant a seed for them to stay open minded to various possibilities. I believe there is more common ground than we think. I am willing to bet that we would like to retu t rn to our ‘normal’ lives. I feel competent and confident to enter a heated conversation with humility t and curiosity t with protesters. But, I must confess that the organizer’s line of reasoning and initiative defeated me. A nurse should understand that the immunocompromised cancer patients cannot afford to get inf n ected and be exposed to a sea of mas askl k ess protesters. A nurse should understand every r second matters for the patients who are having a stroke or heart r attack when the protesters block the ambulances. A nurse should understand the sweats and bru r ised nose from wearing N95 for 12 hours. A nurse should understand that we have our fear and tears yet we retu t rn shift after shift. A nurse should understand how the health care teams have been indefatigably tending to patients and families. Lastly, a nurse should understand that we choose nursing because we care! Kristen Nagle, your impru Kr r dent actions are hurt rting us. Bob, thank you for your coverage. Warmly, Cee

East Van Amusements relocates

THOR DIAKOW

yle Seller knows games — arcade games, to be exact. He even learned how to fix them at 16. Fast forward several decades, and you'll find him at Industry Arcade in New Westminster. Industry is a private arcade shop available for rent for up to two hours. Space can be reserved online for small gatherings. Inside, there are nearly 50 classic and modern arcade games, including 24 pinball machines, bubble hockey, Skee-Ball, and four-player Pac-Man Battle Royale. No need to scrounge up loose change, it's free play for the duration. The story of Industry Arcade began in 2013, when Seller started East Van Amusements. He had been a game designer at EA Sports for 10 years before that. The company provides popup arcade rentals for bars and restaurants, corporate events, and various parties. Then COVID-19 hit.

Once the pandemic began, rentals stopped at East Van Amusements, resulting in a 95 per cent drop in revenue. That gave Seller the idea to bring people to games in his own space. In August 2020, the entrepreneur opened Industry Arcade in New West's Braid Industrial Park. "I really had no intention to do something like this until COVID came and completely turned our business upside down," he explains. Seller says the tactile nature

of arcade games is what makes the experience so unique. "I have a lot of physical games in here. It's hard to replicate at home." Industry is currently open four days a week, but Seller hopes to expand the hours as business slowly bounces back. For now, his pivot is paying off. "I didn't really think it would get the kind of wow factor it did when I rolled it out. It's been rewarding." By Thor Diakow

Skateboard design pays homage to iconic Canucks jersey

F

ormer professional skateboarder Colin McKay has come a long way from skating the streets of Vancouver, but his hometown is still close to his heart, and he paid homage to his Vancouver roots with his latest skateboard design. When McKay was growing up in Vancouver, skateboarding wasn’t the only thing he did on the streets. Like most kids in Canada, he played a lot of street hockey and would pretend to be his favourite player. “I like me some Tiger Williams,” said McKay. “We used to ride around on our sticks after scoring a goal in street hockey and pretend to be Tiger Williams.” Williams famously rode his stick down the ice after scoring a goal in his return to Toronto after being traded by the Maple Leafs. With his exuberance, not to mention his penchant for both dropping the gloves and scoring goals, he quickly became a beloved figure with the Canucks. For McKay and his friends, Williams endeared himself in another way. “When I was growing up in Vancouver, we skated a spot called the New Spot, which is kind of the go-between down between Hastings and the street below it, right before the Pacific Centre where you walked down all the stairs to the food fair down there,” said McKay. “Tiger Williams used to walk through there occasionally and we all knew him and recognized him and we'd say, 'What's up' and he would show us love and that was cool for us as kids.” “It was The Canuck,” emphasized McKay, “and he didn’t just walk by, he showed us love, recognized

that we were out there doing something and not just hanging out.” For McKay, it really wasn’t just hanging out — he turned skateboarding into a career, transitioning from street skating to vert competitions around the world. One of the original members of the Plan B skateboarding team in the 90’s, McKay relaunched Plan B in 2005 with fellow skateboarder Danny Way. Over the years with Plan B, McKay produced several different signature skateboard designs, but slowed down after retiring. Wanting to produce another board, McKay turned to one of his all-time favourite designs: the much-maligned “Flying-V” Canucks jerseys of the late-70’s and early-80’s. It’s actually the third Canucks-themed skateboard he’s done. According to McKay, he first had a board with the flying-skate-inspired logo in the middle of the board, then did a take on the blue and maroon orca. This time around, he wanted to go a little more old-school. “I've had the Canucks graphics before but I always looked at that jersey and the colourways of it and I like very bold and clean-looking

graphics,” said McKay. “I thought if we just almost oversimplified it and just did the black, orange, yellow, that it would get the message across that I was trying to convey — which was Vancouver, pride in the city, pride in the people — without having to get too complicated with it.” The design is instantly recognizable even without some of the added details, like “stitching” where each colour meets. But McKay wanted to take it a step further. “With new techniques that they're using for skateboards these days, they can do this thing where they raise the ink so it has a texture,” said McKay. “So with the stitching around the colour and then the rest of the board, it actually feels like a jersey when you run your hand over it.” While the flying-V jersey is frequently ranked among the worst jerseys in professional sports history, McKay doesn’t care. “It’s exactly the jersey that’s on the board that’s my favourite,” said McKay when asked to name his favourite Canucks jersey of all time. “The funkiness of

it is the beauty of it. That dated, throwback sort of vibe. I think I like it more these days than I probably did when I was a little kid. Maybe it’s just nostalgia but I appreciate it more.” “It really is an odd colourway,” he added with a laugh. “If you were designing it from scratch, it really is an odd, awkward colourway, but if you’re from Vancouver, you know why it’s special.” Now living in California, McKay has a tougher time following the Canucks as closely as he once did — “They don’t play the Canucks on TV down here!” — but he makes sure to go to a game every time he gets back up to Vancouver. The Canucks are clearly still close to his heart, as is the local skate scene. “When we were kids growing up, the skate scene up there hadn't really been developed. The scene was California,” said McKay. “We just tried to emulate what guys were doing in California but now Vancouver has one of the best skate scenes in the world and some of the best skateboarders currently in the world are from Vancouver.” By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

ith an estimated 1 million cigarette butts tossed on the streets and public spaces of Vancouver each day, the city is looking at new ways of encouraging smokers to properly dispose of their burnt garbage. So they're trying a vote. The idea started in Europe and it's fairly simple. Use a butt ballot box to engage with smokers. "It's part of our overall strategy to help reduce litter," says the city's manager of solid waste programs Jonathan McDermott.

"It's one of the tools we're testing out to see if it reduces cigarette butt litter." So far there's just one butt ballot pilot, at Bute and Davie where a pop-up plaza has been set up. The device itself is also simple. It's essentially a metal box with two transparent panes. Smokers can vote with their butts for one of two answers; right now it's whether or not cigarette butts are litter, and while the obvious answer is winning, it is oddly not a complete victory, with a few naysayers butting in to go with 'No.' McDermott says that's actually not an uncommon

perception among smokers, which is why millions of the little plastic filters end up on the ground each year. However, each butt can take 25 years to decompose, and they can carry toxins into the water system, especially when they wash down storm drains. But in either case, the goal of the ballot box is working so long as it collects lots of votes. "It's trying to encourage more use of a cigarette butt receptacle," McDermott says. Future questions might be more fun and engaging, he notes. In Europe a popular vote was Christian Ronaldo

vs. Lionel Messi. While cigarette butts are small, McDermott notes that they're the most common type of litter on the streets, hence the search for better ways to collect them and get them into the trash system. The city isn't on its own in this case, they're working with the West End BIA to monitor the voting, which started in July. McDermott says the city wanted to get their feet wet with this one before developing the program further. "We're really just going to play it by ear, if we feel it's going well we'll look to expand," he says.

Vote with your butt: Vancouver running pilot project to curb cigarette litter

While the litter aspect of the ballot box is the main thrust of the program, McDermott notes there's also a QR code on the box which takes people to a site for those

looking to quit. He adds that there's also a public safety aspect as cigarette butts occasionally lead to fires. By Brendan Kergin

t all started around a hundred years ago in Siena, Italy, when the Bertacchi family became milliners. Today, with the vision of the second generation of the family business, they have grown their presence and product categories. Cappelleria Bertacchi, located in Gastown, is one of the very few hat-making businesses in Vancouver that designs and manufactures their own hats. "Hat lovers usually don't look for brands. They look for designs. We are designers with our own brand and not re-sellers," said 40-year old Adi Bertacchi, who is also the trade expansion manager for the family business. Born in Siena, Bertachi brought the century-old business to Vancouver in 2015, almost a year after he immigrated to Canada. "It is hard to say how long I have been in this industry as I have been helping my dad since I was a little kid. I grew up in a certain environment. But officially, my brother and I took over the business from our dad in 2012," explained Bertacchi. On average, the Bertachhi hat-makers design 500 hats CONTINUE ON PAGE 16

Mt Pleasant man fills apartment with incredible antiques relics of the past began when he was just a child."In grade three, I was going through old houses for demolition, stripping doorknobs and light fixtures out of them, and it just went on and on and on," he reminisces. Over 40 years of collecting and he's still going strong,

McNutt has turned his apartment into a veritable museum of accumulated items. All the modern fixtures inside his home have been replaced with antique ones that still function. There's a central vacuum system from 1914, a juicer from 1917, and a working

wall telephone dating back to 1905. Most of his timeless treasures range in origin from the 1880s to 1920s. In addition to adorning his abode with artifacts, he's also added some pieces to Mount Pleasant's Wenonah building, where he resides.

After restoring lighting fixtures by trade from 1984 to 2017, McNutt now acts as the building's manager. The self-described hoarder says collectors are a unique group of people. "Only collectors know that feeling, the rest of you will just say 'weirdo.'"He's

constantly hunting for something new that's old.

"There's a lot of furniture I see, but I have no place to put it. You never know what you're looking for until you see it, and then you're just hopelessly in love." By Thor Diakow

ITALIAN HAT MAKER CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 every year, covering a wide variety of women's and men's styles. Many of their hats have been featured in movies and TV shows like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina; The Man in the High Castle; The Good Doctor; The Philosophy of Phil; and Bad Times at the El Royale, among others. Recently, they collaborated with costume designer Barbara Gregusova to make a headpiece for the actress portraying Meghan Markle in the movie Escaping the Palace. Bertacchi immigrated to Canada with a work visa and a hope to expand his family business but faced troubles securing credit for his privately held corporation. He believes Canadian immigration laws are complex, and often, people with "skills and will to grow the economy" may end up having to go back home. "If you want to immigrate, either you invest money in a certain way, or you don't fit the criteria." As a company established abroad, Cappelleria Bertacchi did not have credit history in Canada, therefore banks were not willing to provide them loans. The interest rates that private financing firms offered to them were as high as 40 per cent. "Banks were not even willing to have a conversation with us. They said we are too risky for them as our shareholders do not reside in Canada. They didn't want to look at our sales, cash flow and spreadsheets," recalled Bertacchi during an interview at his shop in Gastown. "In the end, I was able to stay in Canada because my girlfriend sponsored me, not because Canada did something to make it happen. We would have been closed. In 2018, I was almost forced to leave." entrepreneurs hoping to expand their operations in Canada. Often their loan applications are rejected as banks categorize them as "too risky." Bertacchi also shared his experience running a business during the pandemic. He claimed the provincial government did not do enough to help immigrant entrepreneurs: "During the pandemic, I have to thank the federal government as they put a blind eye and said, 'okay, we are going to help everyone.' But the B.C. government didn't help us at all." Bertacchi further attested he couldn't claim any of the business-related pandemic benefits the B.C. government announced because the shareholders of his business are not here: "We employ Canadians, and I was willing to provide any document to guarantee that I will spend every penny in Canada, and nothing will go to shareholders. However, nothing was enough." Even though there are struggles, he is hopeful that tourists will be back in Vancouver. Bertacchi continues to help young designers, especially from the BIPOC community, by offering internships and other opportunities. Cappelleria Bertacchi currently has two locations in Italy (Siena and Lucca) in addition to the one in Vancouver. The family business is already designing its Summer 2022 collection. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
