V.I.A. partners to release limited edition Expo 86 beer

V

ancouver beer drinkers can enjoy a taste of nostalgia with a brand new ‘80s-inspired ale.

New Westminster’s Another Beer Co. (ABC) has teamed up with V.I.A. to create a throwback Expo 86-themed beer. “Every time you walk

through the city, you see the architectural times of the 1980s and how vital Expo 86 was to the province,” says ABC co-owner Alex Jopson. According to ABC, it “uses the choicest B.C. malts and hops to create a beautiful ale, with depth and easy drinkability.” “What we were looking to capture is just the terroir of B.C. I know it’s a wine term, but what we want to do is just put together a product that highlights the ingredients that are grown right here in this wonderful province,” explains co-owner Clete Hanson. There’s a sustainability aspect to the packaging as well. Excess cans from ABC brewing, which would have otherwise been recycled, are being used for the doublewrapped Expo 86 cans. ABC also helps reduce waste by printing smaller labels for its various products. There’s even a special golden ticket on a select number of

Expo cans; just peel back the label for a chance to win a special prize. The ale’s label art was designed by Pacific Northwest artist Riley Holt. He’s crafted numerous labels for the craft brewery and even helped create ABC’s logo, which is itself a nod to the iconic fair. The Expo Ale can be found in various liquor stores throughout Metro Vancouver, including Liberty Wines, Legacy Liquor, and Cedar Cottage Liquor. For the unfamiliar, Expo 86 was a World’s Fair that took place in Vancouver from May 2 to October 13, 1986, and coincided with the city’s centennial. An estimated 22 million people attended and the event marked a turning point for B.C. tourism. It was responsible for several lasting legacies in the city like the SkyTrain and Expo Centre, which would become Science World a year later.

Public Hearing: October 5, 2021 Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 6 pm City Hall, 453 West 12th Avenue Third, Floor, Council Chamber

All spoken and written comments will be publicly accessible on the City of Vancouver’s website with your full name attached. Members of the public can listen and watch the proceedings via the City’s website or follow Twitter @VanCityClerk. If attending in person, members of the public must comply with the Public Health Order.

Vancouver City Council will hold a Public Hearing to consider zoning for these locations:

To participate in the Public Hearing process, you can register to speak beginning at 8:30 am on September 24, 2021 until 5 pm on the day of the Public Hearing:

1. Minor Amendments to FC-2 Zoning District Schedule, Sub-Area E Intensification of Employment Space in Mixed-Use Buildings (False Creek Flats Area Plan) To amend the FC-2 District Schedule of the Zoning and Development By-law to optimize the use of employment floor space, while retaining ground floor spaces for light industrial activities in Sub-area E. The amendments also include the addition of Health Care Office Use to be consistent with Sub-area A of the FC-2 District Schedule and the I-1 District Schedule. 2. Removal of the Alma Street West Side Building Line North of West Fourth Avenue To amend the Zoning and Development By-law to remove the building line on the west side of Alma Street, north of West 4th Avenue (1400 to 1900-blocks of Alma Street). The building line on Alma Street was originally intended to provide wider street right-of-way for transportation and surface utility purposes. As Point Grey Road west of MacDonald Street has been reclassified as a local street, this section of Alma Street north of West 4th Avenue no longer functions as an arterial. Council directed staff to review this particular building line, and City staff have determined that the building line can be removed.

• by going to the Council meeting page on the City’s website and selecting the meeting date, meeting type and agenda item(s) you can inform us that you wish to attend by telephone; or • by calling 604-829-4238 and specifying which meeting date, meeting type and agenda item(s) you wish to speak to, and indicate whether by telephone or in person.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THESE APPLICATIONS, VISIT: shapeyourcity.ca/rezoning AND REFER TO THE REFERRAL REPORT FOR LEGAL DESCRIPTIONS OF SUBJECT PROPERTIES.

3. CD-1 Rezoning: 357-475 West 41st Avenue To rezone 357-475 West 41st Avenue from RS-1 (Residential) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District, to permit the development of a 14-storey and 22-storey mixed-use building with a rooftop amenity floor, containing 419 secured market rental units, with 18 per cent of the residential floor area being secured as moderate income units. A height of 72.6 metres (238 feet) and a floor space ratio (FSR) of 6.32 are proposed.

These Public Hearings are to be convened by electronic means. You may participate in the Public Hearing either by speaking by phone or in person, or submitting comments that will be distributed to the Mayor and Councillors.

4. CD-1 Rezoning: 325-343 West 41st Avenue To rezone 325-343 West 41st Avenue from RS-1 (Residential) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District, to permit the development of a 10-storey residential building

Due to COVID-19, a Public Health Order currently limits the number of members of the public that can attend the City’s Public Hearings in person. Members of the public are strongly encouraged to attend remotely.

If you want to participate by telephone then you must have access to a telephone, provide a telephone number that can be used to contact you, and an email address where instructions on when and how to call into the Public Hearing can be provided to you. Speakers can also call in during the Public Hearing. The telephone number and participant code are tweeted out and available on the live stream, while the meeting is in progress. For more information, visit vancouver.ca/publichearings. From our tasting of them, we can say their flavour profiles are better than the “big brands,” who we shall not name here! The Paloma is more like a fruit drink with less focus on the tequila, and the Lime Soda more like those now-traditional tequila and soda beverages you may have drunk, only better. Keep an eye out for Cinco in better liquor stores around the city, then across Canada as they plan to expand in the coming months and years.

They import tequila in large vats from Mexico and turn it into tasty drinks, right here in B.C.. The plan is to focus only on one type of alcohol, which is produced in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. Popular bhangra star featured on downtown billboard

Throughout the pandemic, the Yukon resident toured across Canada and shared his joyful videos on Twitter. He also encouraged TransLink riders to don facial coverings by showcasing his bhangra skills on the SkyTrain, on a bus, and outside of

a SkyTrain station while sporting a mask. Now, the social media sensation will bring smiles to the faces of passersby from high above Granville Street. Pandher is now featured on a large billboard downtown, dancing with a beaming smile on his face. The billboard reads: “Taught people to dance. Moved the whole country.” In a Twitter post, the popular performer thanks YouTube Canada for the

nationwide billboards that will appear in major cities including Vancouver, Toronto, and Montréal. Pandher has been practising bhangra most of his life, punctuated by small breaks every now and then, but he turned it into a full-time job during the pandemic, teaching it online to help those who felt cooped up. In the summer of 2020, the Yukon resident took two months off work to travel around British Columbia

and visit his parents, who live in Abbotsford. Along the way, the social media star took a side-trip to Vancouver Island that included a stop in Victoria and a visit to Long Beach. Right after he received his COVID-19 vaccine, Pandher recorded himself joyfully dancing on a frozen lake in the Yukon, much to the delight of his adoring fans. Vancouver cold case files: Murder in Mole Hill

M

uriel Lindsay, 40, had recently beaten cancer and was about to move into a new apartment overlooking Vancouver’s English Bay. But before she could finish packing, she was found beaten to death in her room in a West End boarding house. Muriel grew up with her brother Kent in the exclusive British Properties area of West Vancouver. Her father, Eric Lindsay, was a celebrity photographer with the Vancouver Sun and her mother, Marjorie, stayed home to look after the family. When Muriel was 12, Eric took a job with CBC’s The National and the family moved to Toronto. Soon after they separated, Marjorie and Kent moved back to Vancouver, and Muriel’s mental health

started to unravel. Muriel eventually followed her mother back to B.C., and in 1983, moved into a room in a heritage house on Comox Street in the West End’s Mole Hill. She stayed there for the next 13 years. In the months before her death, Muriel received bizarre anonymous letters. One of her much-loved cats was taken and a note was slipped under her door saying she owed a vet bill. Magazines and newspaper subscriptions were taken out in her name using her credit card, and someone had made a donation to the United Way in her name. Muriel was also receiving strange letters and was disturbed enough by them to have all her mail forwarded to her mother’s apartment in West Vancouver. She told her father that she was being

harassed by two men who lived in her rooming house. Eric Lindsay thought Muriel was being stalked. On February 16, 1996, Muriel finished her shift at the Canada Post building on West Georgia Street at 11 p.m. As they did most nights, Muriel and a co-worker walked through downtown Vancouver to their homes in the West End. The two parted company when they reached Muriel’s house.

Muriel and her mother spoke on the phone every day, so when Marjorie repeatedly failed to reach her daughter, she started to worry. She and a friend drove to Muriel’s place the next day. They got a key to her apartment from the landlady and found her body. She had died sometime in the early hours of the morning, Muriel died from blows to her head and larynx. Muriel was not the only member of her family to

suffer a violent death. In 1914, her great-grandfather Richard Levis, a 28-year-old Vancouver police officer, was shot and killed while hunting down a criminal known as “Mickey the Dago.” His wife Estelle was left to raise their three children—Cyril, Carroll and May (Muriel’s grandmother)—all under the age of five. Estelle was hired as a matron in the women’s division of the Vancouver Police Department and worked there until 1919.

“I think people are going to be converting everything, all old cars will go electric. You get a million miles out of these engines.

A

family project turned into an automotive environmental initiative for one Vancouver entrepreneur. Kits Eyecare Ltd. CEO Roger Hardy has converted a 1991 Humvee into a fully electric vehicle, complete with a 75-kilowatt Tesla battery sealed in an aluminum case. He purchased the truck from a U.S. military auction. High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (Humvees) were originally primarily used by the American military in the early 1990s during

the Gulf War. The bulky diesel-powered transports inspired the consumer-friendly Hummer line for the civilian market. The labour of love, with help from Hardy’s young son, took a year to complete. He also needed a hand from some local experts for the complex conversion to electric. While Humvees are known for their imposing racket, his revamped model is virtually silent. “It’s funny how fast people get that it’s electric; there’s no real sound to it. They get that it’s electric very fast and they don’t

tend to be as irate as I think they were with the diesel,” remarks Hardy. According to Hardy, as concerns over vehicle emissions rise and gas prices continue to spike, auto consumers are going green now more than ever. “I think people are going to be converting everything, all old cars will go electric. You get a million miles out of these engines,” he says. A recent report shows over 54,400 electric vehicles are on B.C. roads, resulting in roughly 216,000 tonnes of reduced emissions a year. Research indicates there could be more than 2.5 million zero-emission vehicles in the province by 2040, requiring about 400 fast-charging sites. As of December 2020, B.C. had 205 charging sites completed or started. By Thor Diakow

or the second year in a row, Vancouverites will miss out on another spooktacular event this fall: VanDusen Botanical Garden’s Glow in the Garden light display. A spokesperson with the Vancouver Park Board told Vancouver Is Awesome via email the garden’s staff made the decision some time ago due to resource constraints and uncertainties around coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions. The news comes on the heels of the Stanley Park Ghost Train being cancelled over coyote concerns. In 2019, Glow in the

Garden’s guests went on a journey to help Anna the hummingbird and her friends lift the “hootenanny” glowing spell cast over the garden by a tricky old owl, collecting treats along their way. In 2020 the event went dark amid the pandemic. “We are hoping to offer a holiday event this winter, but staff are still working through those details,” the spokesperson added. Mayor Stewart proposes Friendship City Program

S

isters are one thing, but what if cities just want to be friends? Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart is suggesting the city start a Friendship City Program. In a motion coming to council later this month, Stewart says other cities want to have relationships with Vancouver, but there’s no formal mechanism to allow for one, other than the “detailed, extensive, and sometimes costly Sister City agreements.” “Partnering with cities located outside Canada is an effective way by which Vancouver can build and strengthen cultural and business relationships around the globe — especially in an increasingly divided world,” states Stewart’s motion. Vancouver does have some sister cities: Los Angeles, Edinburgh, Odessa, Yokohama, and Guangzhou. Toronto also has sister cities, but they have a friendship city program as well, which the motion cites. “Toronto’s Friendship City Program applications must be co-sponsored by a Council member as well as an interested community organization, with the candidate city also officially signalling a willingness to participate in a Friendship

City agreement,” states the motion. A similar idea is proposed for Vancouver, with a local non-profit society acting as a sponsor responsible for maintaining the multimunicipality friendship (and the costs). Unlike most human relationships, the program, as proposed, would see agreements end after five years with an option to renew. Other proposed rules and regulations include: - One friend city per country - They need to have a similar size and geography - Official city involvement is limited to a letter signed by the mayor and annual letters The motion also asks staff (if the program goes forward) to create “a mechanism for terminating the Friendship City relationship, if it no longer meets a standard such as community reporting, active relationship, or shared values.” Essentially a way to break off the friendship. Council will vote on the program later this month. The motion also includes a request to review the Sister City Program, review the status of the current sister cities, and provide “suggestions for updating the gendered language of the program.” By Brendan Kergin

Donate now to support the most urgent needs of the medical teams who save lives every day. These health care workers take care of our entire community, not only during a pandemic, but every day.

There is no girls team or boys team; it just doesn’t exist. It doesn’t matter what gender you are, you’re welcome to play derby. MADELEINE SHAW VJRD BOARD CHAIR

Currently, competitive bouts can only take place at the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre. The team has more than 50 members, ranging in age from six to 18. The fringe sport has grown significantly over the last several years; roughly 70 youth are on the group’s waitlist. The VJRD is Vancouver’s only junior roller derby team and one of only two junior teams in the Lower Mainland. The organization is notable for its gender

inclusion and LGBTQ2Sfriendly culture. According to Shaw, it remains a safe space for many children struggling with gender identity. “There is no girls team or boys team; it just doesn’t exist. It doesn’t matter what gender you are, you’re welcome to play derby.” A rally was held on Labour Day at Concord Community Park to raise awareness about the issue. The VJRD has also been invited to an upcoming Mount Pleasant Community Centre association board meeting to address the issue. The public is encouraged to sign an online petition in support of the group finding a dedicated year-round wheeled sports facility, which can be found at bit.ly/rollerderbyvan. By Thor Diakow THOR DIAKOW

FO

hey’re all laced up with nowhere to roll. The Vancouver Junior Roller Derby (VJRD) team is searching for a permanent space to skate. Since 2013, the group had been using the Mount Pleasant Community Centre gym for weekly practices. On August 9, the team received notice the centre’s association board was suspending inline skating and roller derby activities. The annual budget to maintain the centre’s floors has been cut and “as a result, they felt the need to cut roller derby and inline skating, citing the idea that these sports, the perception that these sports, cause more wear and tear than things like floor hockey,” explains VJRD board chair Madeleine Shaw. Now the VJRD doesn’t have access to a covered facility where practices or games can be held.

All advertising published in this newspaper is accepted on the premise that the merchandise and services offered are accurately described and willingly sold to buyers at the advertised prices. Advertisers are aware of these conditions. Advertising that does not conform to these standards or that is deceptive or misleading, is never knowingly accepted. If any reader encounters non-compliance with these standards we ask that you inform the Publisher of this newspaper and The Advertising Standards Council of B.C. OMISSION AND ERROR: The publishers do not guarantee the insertion of a particular advertisement on a specified date, or at all, although every effort will be made to meet the wishes of the advertisers. Further, the publishers do not accept liability for any loss of damage caused by an error or inaccuracy in the printing of an advertisement beyond the amount paid for the space actually occupied by the portion of the advertisement in which the error occurred. Any corrections of changes will be made in the next available issue. Vancouver Is Awesome will be responsible for only one incorrect insertion with liability limited to that portion of the advertisement affected by the error. Request for adjustments or corrections on charges must be made within 30 days of the ad’s expiration. For best results please check your ad for accuracy the first day it appears. Refunds made only after 7 business days notice!

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
