There were speakers such as MLA Melanie Mark, and multiple residential school survivors telling their stories. There were also music, song, and dance performances.

Meh, a twelve-foot-tall Coast Salish puppet, was also in attendance, and walked through the crowd. The event was one of many held across the country. It was organized so that people could reflect on Canada's genocidal Indian Residential School System, and honour the thousands of children who didn't make it home from them. By Bob Kronbauer

"We had a major roof leak around 11PM in the winter last year and tried calling every company who claimed to be be 24/7. Nobody came or even answered until I called Absolute. Carlos arrived within 45 minutes in a total downpour, got on the roof and stopped the water from entering our bedroom. He identified the problem then scheduled an appointment to come back and fix the roof properly which he did with Vinni. They also replaced our noisy acrylic skylights that were ten years old with glass ones. For the record, glass skylights are so much better than acrylic! Carlos and Vinni are truly welcome to come for a drink in the garden anytime. Also had great communications from HQ throughout." E. H. "Garth and his team fixed a planter that was leaking into our condominium. Excellent work, on time, good communication. The Absolute Team applied a layer of Alsan and granules to our large condominium roof to prolong its service life. Excellent work by the team. Very professional and good value.." M. H.

Vancouver Cold Case Files: Sweet Sixteen - the Rhona Duncan murder

R

hona Duncan, 16, was murdered in the early hours of July 15, 1976, after walking home from a birthday party. Although 45 years have gone by, Rhona’s high school friends still get together to remember her and try and solve her murder. I’m not sure when I first heard about Rhona Duncan’s murder, but I do remember that it was through my daughter who is friends with Shawn and Peggy Mapoles daughter who lived across the road. Shawn was Rhona’s boyfriend, and on July 16, 1976 he took her to a party on East Queens Road. It was meant to be a small celebration for his friend’s sixteenth birthday, but the party quickly got out of hand and teens poured in from all over the North Shore. Around 1 a.m. the family called the police.

It was a warm summer night and Shawn, Rhona and their friends Marion and Owen took their time walking in the direction of their homes. The teens, who were to enter Grade 12 at Carson Graham Secondary in the fall, stopped at the district hall. Owen and Shawn lived up the hill, and Rhona and Marion lived in the Hamilton area. The girls wanted to be by themselves to talk about the night; it was an easy walk down Jones Avenue. Rhona and Marion stopped and talked for a while then parted company near Marion’s home and Rhona disappeared into the darkness. She was at the intersection at West 15th, the quiet residential street where she lived, when someone stopped her. By 4 a.m. Rhona, the oldest of four girls, was dead.

ou can celebrate Indigenous art and activism right now at the Museum of Vancouver (MOV). Boarder X, the museum's latest exhibition, examines Indigenous skateboard, snowboard, and surf culture in Canada. It showcases works by numerous contemporary artists from Indigenous Nations across the country, including

Amanda Strong, Bracken Hanuse Corlett, Meghann O’Brien, K.C. Hall, and Les Ramsay. "Each one of their stories is unique and distinct from their Nations and their art production. I just really deeply respect what they've brought forth in this exhibition," explains curator Jaimie Isaac. The exhibition, which opened Oct. 2, "examines contested spaces, political borders, hybrid identities,

Boneless Pork Loin Roasts She had been raped and strangled in sight of the safety of her home. Shawn found out about his girlfriend’s murder the next day from one of his friends. Later that morning the RCMP arrived, bagged his clothes and interviewed him. A polygraph that he gave voluntarily at the time, and then his DNA taken decades later, cleared him completely. Police say they’ve interviewed hundreds of witnesses and suspects in the Rhona Duncan case, performed polygraphs on the higher priority suspects, and tested the DNA of over 170 others. The problem is that police can only take DNA voluntarily, and criminals are unlikely to comply. Has the RCMP checked out phenotyping DNA where they can produce a composite of the killer and one that her friends may recognize? Has the RCMP submitted a DNA profile to Gedmatch, a U.S.-based genealogical database that has successfully solved a number of cold cases in recent years? I don’t know,

Board approves $500 fine for feeding coyotes, other wildlife

GETTY

T

he Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation has approved fines for feeding wild animals in the city's parks. Two new fines were green-lit during a parks board meeting on Sept. 27: one for directly feeding wild animals and one for leaving attractants out to draw wild animals out. People feeding coyotes and leaving food for other animals have been blamed for the more than 40 coyote attacks that have happened since winter 2020. Amit Gandha, the acting director with the parks board, told board members about how conservation officers rustled a bag of chips at a coyote to draw it near. In the report, photos were also shared of someone using food to draw raccoons close for photos. The fines have been set at $500 for now, and enforcement with the new fines will start soon. "Once we have this [bylaw amendment] completed then staff will have to look at next

steps on what that looks like as far as the enforcement component," Gandha told board members at the meeting. Currently, the only fines regarding feeding wildlife in Stanley Park are handed out by the BC Conservation Officers Service under the wildlife act; park rangers don't have the authority to issue those fines. Board members discussed adding fish to the bylaw and upping how much fines were but decided to stick with the current $500 fines. The fines drew support from

those calling in to share their opinions on the fines. Lesley Fox, executive director of the Fur-Bearers, said the organization was concerned with the practice of feeding animals for social media posts and supported the fines. "We would support an increase in the fine," she said "We believe a strong deterrent is needed to prevent wildlife feeding." The board voted unanimously in favour of the recommendations. Jim Benning and Travis Green have the hottest seats in the NHL

I

n one week, the Vancouver Canucks will be embarking on one of their most important seasons in recent memory. It’s playoffs or bust. That’s clear from general manager Jim Benning’s offseason, which was as aggressive as he promised it would be. Benning used every tool available to him — buyouts, trades, signings — to reshape the roster to get the team back into the postseason. The end result? A confident Canucks squad that fully believes they can be one of the top teams in their division. “I think that this is probably the best roster we’ve had in my three years here,” said defenceman Quinn Hughes after signing his new contract this weekend. “I think Jim did a really good job this summer.” Those improvements came at a price. For the second year in a row, the Canucks didn’t have a first-round pick in the NHL Entry Draft, as they traded it away as part of a deal for Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Conor Garland. That got the Canucks the top-four defenceman and top-six forward they needed but at the expense of a long-term asset. It’s as clear a signal as you can possibly get: the time to win is now. Rebuilding teams don’t typically trade

away first-round picks — contending teams do. There’s also plenty of pressure from both fans and ownership. After all, the Canucks have made the playoffs just once in the last six seasons. That one playoff appearance saw them get tantalizingly close to the Western Conference Final in 2020, but instead of building on that success last season, they faltered, falling well short of the playoffs. There were mitigating circumstances — a difficult schedule, an injury to Elias Pettersson, and a brutal COVID-19 outbreak — but it was still a disappointing season. In order to put it behind them, they’ll need to win early and often. If the Canucks start the season by losing 11 of their first 17 games like they did last season, the writing could be on the wall for Benning and Travis Green. Green is heading into his fifth season as head coach of the Canucks, with just the one playoff appearance. If this is the best roster he’s been given as Hughes suggests, what is he going to do with it? As for Benning, he’s entering his eighth season as GM of the Canucks — most GMs with a track record like Benning’s don’t make it to eight seasons. Adding to the pressure, the Canucks already have potential replacements

for Green and Benning in-house. The Canucks signed Brad Shaw as an assistant coach after he was let go by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Long considered a potential head coach around the league, Shaw is taking on a larger role with the Canucks than a typical assistant. He won’t be limited to just coaching one aspect of the game, like the forwards, defence, or special teams; instead, he’ll have a hand in it all. It’s not a stretch to think Shaw might step behind the bench as head coach if things go sideways. Meanwhile, the Canucks brought in Daniel and Henrik Sedin to the management side this offseason after a few years away from the game. They’ve spent the early months on the job absorbing every aspect of front office work, with the expectation that they’ll grow into larger roles in the future. If all goes wrong, they could step into a larger role sooner than expected. There’s nothing but optimism heading into the season, of course, and all of this could be a moot point. The Canucks are definitely a better team on paper than they were last season; now we’ll see if they’re a better team on the ice. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

Metro Vancouver adopted Bylaw 1303 in March 2020 to reduce the impact on public health and the environment due to smoke from residential indoor wood burning. Additional requirements will come into effect in 2025. Metro Vancouver offers a wood stove exchange program to reduce emissions from wood-burning appliances. Girl Guides resume in-person cookie sales

S

weet treats for a good cause are available at your door once again. The B.C. Girl Guides have resumed in-person cookie sales after an 18-month hiatus. COVID-19 saw the suspension of traditional door-to-door cookie selling, as many local retailers stepped in to lend the organization a helping hand. Cookie sales are an integral part of Girl Guides' fundraising.

"We derive almost all of our revenue from the sale of cookies as an organization. We sell cookies to ensure that every girl can participate in Girl Guides," explains provincial commissioner Diamond Isinger. This fall you can purchase the classic chocolate and vanilla variety, which are usually available in the spring. Girl Guides of Canada has been operating for over a century. B.C. currently has about 18,000 members.

Insinger says her group plays a key role in enriching the lives of girls and young women across the country. "What we look like today may not be what your grandmother's experience was in Girl Guides. We want to empower every girl to be able to take action of her own to decide what she's most passionate about and how she's going to make a change in that way." By Thor Diakow

Vancouver hopes to 'un-bury' stream near Spanish Banks

V

ancouver parks board staff are looki king to continue their work unbury r ing a creek at Spanish Banks Beach. Canyon Creek runs through Pacific Spirit Park, but gets covered up p as it ap pproaches the road, parking lots, and beach and enters the ocean through a pipe. For a variety of reasons the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation are looking at opening it back up to daylight (a practice known as daylighting). Canyon Creek is one of three streams that run from the park into English Bay; the other two are both open; Spanish Banks Creek was restored in 1999 and Salish Creek was restored in 2012. Following the work at Spanish Banks Creek salmon have returned to the creek after being released by Fisheries and Oceans

Canada. "Daylighting of Canyon Creek would create an aboveground watercourse to flow into mostly infilled land where Spanish Banks beach currently sits," states a report from parks staff. "If successfu f l,, this projject could create a model that could inform habitat restoration in other busy beach parks such as in the West End." Among the benefits of uncovering the creek, staff point to increase the naturalization of the area, increased biodiversity, a greater protected area for that biodiversity, and improving the water quality in English Bay. There are expected benefits for people as well, with a separation of the bike path and walkway and increased awareness and education about projects and situations like this one, the report suggests.

"The general concept and goal would daylight the creek to be similar to a stream in as natu t ral a state as possible," states the report. "The opportu t nities to daylight streams in Parks are relatively few in the City t ; this project will bring connectivity within a larger Regional watershed of important conservation value, of high visibility, and promote ecological awareness." Right now staff are looking for the board to approve intergovernmental work with the Musqueam, Squamish and TsleilWaututh nations. The provincial government and Metro Vancouver would also have to be involved. Staff estimates the design and plan would be completed as part of the 2023-2026 Capital Plan.

Former Vancouver mayor Philip Owen dies at 88

F

ormer Vancouver mayor Philip Owen, a driving force behind North America's first life-saving supervised drug injection clinic, has died. Owen was 88. A statement from his family says he died peacefully on Sept. 30 from complications related to Parkinson's disease. Owen served in various elected roles in Vancouver from 1978 to 2002, including the last nine years as the city's mayor. He was one of the first champions of the four pillars drug strategy, an approach to addiction that emphasizes prevention, treatment, enforcement, and harm reduction, and his work led to the creation of Insite, North America's first supervised injection site. The family says memorial and funeral plans for the husband of 63 years, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather will be announced later. Christian Owen says in the statement that the family has always been proud of his father. "He loved this city, every part of it, and you could see this in how he found the right balance, even when it came to the toughest issues. He was a gentleman and a devoted Vancouverite, right

to the end." Owen was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2008, and last year, the St. Paul's Hospital Foundation and BC Centre on Substance Use established the Philip Owen professorship in addiction medicine at the University of B.C. in his honour. Owen was the son of Walter Owen, who served as lieutenant-governor of B.C. in the 1970s. Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart called Owen a gentle and decent man, whose time as mayor will be remembered for his courage and foresight. His work saved thousands of lives, Stewart said in a statement on Friday. "Though a challenging idea at the time, mayor Owen learned from talking with those living with addiction that harm reduction was the only way to address the overdose crisis of the mid1990s and early 2000s." Stewart said the city wouldn't be taking the steps it is now with safe supply, plans for decriminalization, and expanded treatment and support for those facing mental health and addiction challenges if it was not for Owen’s leadership. "He will be missed."

small businesses, Indigenous-owned businesses, women-owned businesses, and stay-at-home businesses and we just happen to check all of those boxes," explains Lynn-Marie. The business continues to grow, with some international orders coming from as far away as Australia. Inspiring other Indigenous entrepreneurs is key for the Angus sisters. "One of our main motivators is to inspire, promote, and motivate other Indigenous women to also define their own financial futures through Indigenous business," says Lynn-Marie. By Thor Diakow

Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Projects We want to hear from you

The Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Richmond, BC is being upgraded to protect public health and the environment in a growing region. The design concept includes tertiary treatment and a range of ecological restoration projects. The projects are in the project definition phase. Work is underway to refine the design to ensure the best possible projects are presented to Metro Vancouver’s Board for consideration in early 2022. Metro Vancouver is seeking feedback on aspects of the projects that could, based on current work to refine the design, result in revisions to the design concept that was presented during previous project engagement. Topics will include treatment technology, plant footprint, project cost estimates, and schedule.

Our panel of fast food 'experts' reviews the Whopper

WHY ARE WE REVIEWING THE WHOPPER?

While you might find it odd that we're reviewing a burger that was introduced in 1957, I can assure you that our readers asked for it. Sort of. I recently received a phone call from a woman who came across a 2009 post on our website (back when we were a blog) in which I encouraged frugal folks like me to grab a Whopper for $1.79, on what the company calls "Whopper Wednesday," which takes place every Wednesday in BK franchises around the world.

The reader who called in had found that post in our archives, printed it out, then brought it to Burger King on Denman, requesting that they be sold the burger for that price. The franchise turned her away (or, that is, they charged her the $3.99 that it now costs on Whopper Wednesday) so she called to let me know that I might want to update the piece. I decided to do one better by not only updating everyone on the current price of a Whopper on Wednesday, but also getting our panel of experts to review said burger. BK'S WHOPPER ON A BUDGET Priced at $6.99 ($7.35 after tax) the rest of the week, the Whopper's price on Wednesday is $3.99 ($4.20 after tax) in Vancouver. The panel unanimously agrees that this is a decent value, even though that's an over-50 per cent increase of its 2009 $1.79 price tag. Kergin goes a step further than simply agreeing, exclaiming through a mouthful of flame-grilled beef that "You're not gonna get a better burger for under five bucks!" He also expresses his opinion

that the mouth-feel is "Better than the 'pink slime'" texture that McDonald's has been trying to distance itself from for years, though they used to include that ingredient in their signature Big Mac. William-Ross disagrees, noting that she expects a chunkier ground from a burger such as this. This is her first test as a member of our panel, and while I'm not the chairperson I can say that she's getting close to stepping over a line by saying such a thing about what I have long considered to be a beloved part of my diet. But this isn't about me, or my feelings.

Diakow expected something different than what I pull out of the bag and present to him, as he says his burger is “bigger than I remembered.” We found out why as he explains that he's "always been more of a Whopper Junior kind o' guy."

TASTE Kergin thinks the meat in his Whopper tastes "better than Wendy's and McDonald's, but not White Spot." Thor looks up at the ceiling as he chews thoughtfully, then mentions that he thinks he detects a "hint of smoky mesquite." At this point, the three founding panel members (the published-andestablished fast food experts) start talking about how a fast food restaurant would go about smoking its meat in order to give it that flavour. William-Ross proves herself by telling us that it's not likely that they smoked it at all, and that they added "smoke" as an additive somehow. At first, it felt like having an actual food expert on our panel might somehow throw this entire thing off its axis. But as we quietly finish our meals, nodding at each other as we dab our Whoppersmeared faces with napkins which were haphazardly thrown into the takeout bag, I think we all silently come to the agreement that WilliamRoss has proved her value to this committee.

William-Ross agrees that the portions are generous, saying, "That's a lot of food." She's not wrong.

THE VERDICT Would we order these again? Kergin wouldn't, as he has a somewhat fierce allegiance to

PRESENTATION I bought our Whoppers from the BK on Denman St, the presentation is as you might expect: stacked in a paper bag, with napkins on top.

W

e've reconvened our panel of fast food experts to chime in on a classic: Burger King's Whopper, discounted on Wednesdays for decades. Heading up the V.I.A. Fast Food Panel is reporter Brendan Kergin, who once held it down as an employee of both Romeo's Pizza and the snack stand at Victoria's All Fun Waterslides. Our video reporter Thor Diakow fancies himself "a frequent purveyor of fast food," and was the second panel member to be added, when we first got together to review McDonald's Spicy McNuggets last month. I'm the third member because I'm the one who buys the stuff for us, and this week I'm happy to introduce a new, trial member of our panel, Lindsay William-Ross. William-Ross is V.I.A.'s Managing Editor (and Foodie-In-Chief) and we've put her on probation as a fast food expert because her qualifications include going to culinary school and being on VanMag's Restaurant Awards judging team. The founding three members are much more lowbrow, but we're giving William-Ross a chance to prove herself in this category.

other chains, such as Carl's Jr: "Unless the car dies in front of BK, I'm not stopping there." Diakow would "absolutely" order a Whopper again, as "It was better than I remembered" it being when he last ate one five years ago. He specifically cites the smoky flavour (that is, additive - thanks, WilliamRoss!) as something that sets it apart from others. He's also impressed by the "fluffiness" of the bun and says the veggies are "fresh and flavourful." William-Ross' verdict is a bit more... nuanced, shall we say? She says the Whopper is “very pickle-centric,” and that it tastes the same as she remembers; she too hadn't eaten one in a long time. To the direct question of would she eat it again? "I'm good for a while," she offers, and follows that up by saying

she doesn't eat fast food very often. That comment is met with a side-eye from the rest of us, but we will bring her over to our side in time. My verdict? Well, I wrote in 2009 that I would buy three of these burgers on Whopper Wednesday, eat one that day, then put the other two in the fridge to consume the next day as lunch and dinner. My position on the Whopper - and specifically Whopper Wednesday - has not changed since 2009. The V.I.A. Fast Food Panel is a lighthearted series of stories, published once per month. We are not connected to or compensated by the chains we feature, and simply aim to offer honest takes about fast food available in Vancouver, while having a bit of fun. By Bob Kronbauer

Unbelievable,itisThanksgiving! October 10, 2021

It’s Thanksgiving! This year we may wonder what to thank God for. We are in the middle of a pandemic that has claimed nearly 28,000 lives in Canada (2000 in B.C.) It has now been declared the deadliest pandemic in American history surpassing the Spanish Flu of 1918. Our society is polarized into all sorts of factions. Reports of violence are increasing. What on earth do we have to be thankful for? Let me take you back in time a bit. A man named Martin Rinkart became pastor of the Lutheran Church in Eilenburg, Saxony, Germany. He had received musical training at the famous St. Thomas Church in Leipzig that would soon become home of Johann Sebastian Bach. He began his pastorate at one of the worst times imaginable. Germany was being ripped apart by the Thirty Years War, a war which began as a religious struggle but soon degenerated even further into a grab for power. Eilenburg was swamped with refugees who flooded in from the countryside. In the midst of the refugee crisis, a plague hit claiming 8000 lives (including Pastor Rinkart’s own wife). At one point he was doing 40-50 funerals a day! Following the plague, a disastrous famine hit the city. It is said that mobs of people would fight over a dead cat or crow. Then, the Swedish army again besieged the city. How would you respond? In the midst of that troublesome time Pastor Rinkart responded differently, writing this famous hymn: al in German: Nun dankett alle Got t t) Now thank we all our God (original Gott) s, with heart and hands and voices who wondrous things has done,, who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. It may seem difficult to thank God when we are struggling. The Bible reminds us of the power of thanksgiving: “Give thanks in all circumstances.” Thanksgiving works by turning our focus from self and circumstances to God. So, in spite of all, have a blessed Thanksgiving Day 2021. This article was written by Senior Pastor Jim Bredeson of Victory Lutheran Church, Medicine Hat, and has been modified by Pastor Manfred Schmidt, Martin Luther Church, Vancouver. Our Thanksgiving Service starts on Sunday at 10:00 am in our Church at 505 E 46 Avenue. You are welcome.
