Barbara wanted to know if we had any more to sell, as she felt inspired to help. We’re now completely sold out of these orange t-shirts but we managed to get one of the last ones we had available into Barbara’s hands.

T
wo pioneering pop artists are the focus of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s new exhibition. GROWING FREEDOM: The instructions of Yoko Ono and The art of John and Yoko opened Oct. 9 and runs until May 2, 2022. The installment examines the creative collaboration between Ono and her late husband, co-founder husband Beatles co founder John Lennon.
The exhibition is organized into two parts. The first emphasizes Ono’s often radical approach to visual art. Some of the featured works invite viewers to participate in the creative process. Guests are welcome to mend broken china or even hammer nails into a canvas. “It’s not like you have to keep your hands in your pockets at all times. It really is about engaging with the works in a physical and spiritual way,” explains curator Cheryl Sim. The second portion

showcases various collaborative projects for peace undertaken by Ono and Lennon. These include the famous War Is Over (If you want it) campaign and Bed-Ins For Peace, both from 1969. Visitors are encouraged to bring headphones to access audio content throughout the exhibition; a limited supply of disposable headphones will be available. The Vancouver Art Gallery is open seven days a week; hours vary depending on the day.

(Issue 79, Oct.7, 2021) Allow me two comments about the animal feeding: - Fine should be $ 2500 - In a realistic world, how do they think that they shall ever be able to collect the fines? $500 or higher?? As these are Public Parks, there are simply no ways (nor means) to enforce. Nor does Vancouver have the funds to do the jobs. When an individual is caught, promptly cancel their driving privileges for the next 365 days, park it in a secure lot, make a note of license plate and record all details on their D/L. Then submit info to ICBC. As they are busy collecting billions off our hardearned incomes, that will give them a worthwhile task. I’m well aware that this may cause an
uproar with other family members, to which I say: Too Bad, Too Sad and Get Over It! Respectfully, Henrik L

Pay what you feel at this local food market

new ‘pay what you feel’ grocery market is helping food security in Vancouver’s Olympic Village. The Rescued Food Market is open every Friday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at 340 W. 2nd Ave near the Olympic Village. Shoppers of all income levels

are welcome; perishable food is offered in exchange for a donation of any value. Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags, but free reusable tote bags are available on-site. A community fridge will also be placed in front of the building in the coming weeks to complement the
food market. The market’s food items, which would otherwise be thrown out, have been ‘rescued’ from local grocers, wholesalers, and farms. Common reasons for food wastage include overstocking, cancelled orders, and impending bestbefore dates.
“A best-before date is not an expiration date; it’s more about a guarantee on the texture and the taste and the feel of the food. It’s more just protecting the brand and the guarantee of how they intend it to be experienced, but it’s not necessarily a safety thing,” explains manager Maddie Hague. The initiative was started by the Food Stash Foundation. The charity gathers roughly 70,000 pounds of surplus food each month and distributes it to charities and Vancouver households experiencing food insecurity. While the Rescued Food Market’s pay structure fluctuates based on individual shoppers, financial support is essential to keep it operating. “The purpose of this food market isn’t to fundraise or make money, the purpose is to have this forward-facing public educational space. But we really do hope that we will be able to raise some funds to keep it going,” says Hague. According to Metro Vancouver, 65,000 tonnes of avoidable food waste is discarded in the Lower Mainland every year. By Thor Diakow

Local duo launches bannock brand
T
wo Indigenous Vancouver women are taking the homecooking world by
storm. Kelsey Coutts and Destiny Hoostie are the founders of Bangin’ Bannock. The dynamic duo sells dry bannock mix in convenient eco-friendly bags enabling consumers to make it at home. Each bag contains dry mix for about eight servings. The recipe consists of four simple ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, and Himalayan salt. The only additions needed are water and frying oil, though bannock can be baked as well. The mix bags can be purchased online or from several local businesses, including United Strangers Coffee, Branch on Bowen, and We Are Turtle Island. Processing is done at a commercial food facility in North Vancouver while distributing is handled out of their home in South Vancouver. Bannock is a traditional unleavened bread widely
considered a staple in Indigenous cuisine. “We grew up in a family of six kids, so bannock was just a way to feed a lot of kids and it was something that was delicious and it was versatile,” explains Hoostie. “When you’re eating together, you are already sharing on a different level and it opens those doors for communication in a really beautiful way,” adds Coutts. The team behind Bangin’ Bannock was brought together by the 3C Challenge, an initiative that helps Indigenous people develop business skills and explore their entrepreneurial opportunities. Each month, the small business donates 10 per cent of proceeds from sales to a specific cause. Throughout October, customers can support the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund. The group strives to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and nonIndigenous people. By Thor Diakow

Son of Iranian immigrants on his journey to explore a dairy-free future
I
n 1998, Nima Bahrami was just nine years old when his family decided to pack their bags and move to Vancouver from Tehran. Little Nima was puzzled about what was going on and hesitant to leave his friends. Saying goodbye to his life in Iran was not easy at all. “I was used to having all my friends and people I knew. It was a little bit of cultural shock, and the language was a bit of a barrier when I moved here,” said Bahrami, now 31, during an interview at a café in Kitsilano. He was in elementary school when he took the burden on his tiny shoulders to break that language barrier. However, he said he later appreciated that his parents thought to make that move and create a change for him and his younger brother. “I feel happy that my parents brought us to a place that is way more open, inclusive, and takes care of its citizens,” added Bahrami. Immigration also meant making some sacrifices for
the family. Bahrami’s mom was an interior designer but had to quit her job to spend more time with the kids and help them get accustomed to a new culture. “She did a lot of volunteer work and got involved with my elementary school which is right there,” said Bahrami pointing his finger at Henry Hudson Elementary School on Cypress Street, visible from the café windows. Ultimately, Bahrami went on to obtain his MBA from Cardiff University in Wales. Growing up, Bahrami was passionate about everything related to animals and the environment. Years later, his passion turned into a profession. Bahrami is now the founder and CEO of bettermoo(d), a brand that offers dairy-alternative products and recreates the taste that we enjoy in dairy products. He recently turned vegan, which he found hard to do as following a plant-based lifestyle is not a big thing yet in the Iranian culture. Now Bahrami wants

Through research, bettermoo(d) discovered that a cow’s diet and living conditions impact the flavour of its milk. “In the Alps region cows roam free and eat grass, herbs, flowers, and whatever they are supposed to. That is why the milk they produce ends up being rich and creamy and hence all the products made through that milk are well-known and unique,” said Bahrami. The company’s motto, “What a cow eats and a

After investing a reasonable amount of time in research and development, his team at his Vancouverbased company learned why cow milk tastes the way it does. “My goal is to recreate the flavours of the dairy from the Alps region which is best known in the world,” said the

Finding financial support during the pandemic to discover the right formula was one of the most complex parts, shared Bahrami. new restaurant connected to Vancouver’s acclaimed Bao Bei and Kissa Tanto has recently opened its doors in Chinatown. Nancy Go Yaya specializes in Singaporean street food, and the casual spot is already drawing raves from locals. Located at 265 E Pender St (under Kissa Tanto), Nancy Go Yaya is the venture of Tannis Ling, Alain Chow, and Chef Jian Cheng. Here you can find Singaporean classics prepared with great care, like a fiery laksa (a noodle soup in a creamy, spicy broth) and kaya toast - a beloved Singaporean dish that’s done at Nancy Go Yaya with pandan brioche (pandan is a fragrant tropical plant that lends the bread a green hue), coconut jam, a pat of butter, and salted egg yolk.

Vancouver Christmas Market to return this November

fter a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vancouver Christmas Market is returning to transform downtown into a winter wonderland once again. The announcement of the German-style market’s return

was made on the event’s website, stating the market would run from Nov. 13 to Dec. 24 at its usual location at Jack Poole Plaza. The market is set to many of its classic attractions like its neon carousel, the walk-in Christmas tree, and the Lover’s Lane and Love Lock

installation. “This year’s Christmas Market is bigger and better than ever, with new vendors, special promotions, and incredible giveaways to make things especially merry and bright,” the website states. With the market’s return comes a litany of COVID-19 precautions to allow the event to go ahead. Along with mandatory maskwearing, proof of vaccination, and temperature checks are required upon entry, guests are also encouraged to book their visit online. Distancing precautions will also be put in place at entrances and lineups for food and drinks. By Cameron Thomson

usually one of the drier months of the year, after July and August which usually get 36 and 37 mm respectively. September 2021 saw more than the average for that entire quarter of the year. And this year, with the dry spring and summer we’ve had, more rain fell in September than the five months previous (April 1 to August 31). While that only ranks as the sixth-most rainy September in Vancouver, Lundquist says the high amount is still interesting, given how much more than average fell. The total precipitation is more akin to the wettest months in Vancouver, landing between November (the wettest) and December (the second wettest). “The fall monsoon season started a month or a month and a half early,” he says. He points to Sept. 17 when 51 mm fell in one day. “The fact we get a whole month of rain in one day says a lot more than if
Vancouver got three times the usual amount of rain in September

f September seemed wetter than usual in Metro Vancouver this year, that’s because it was. Three times as wet. Well, nearly. “The fact is we had nearly 300 per cent of our rainfall,” says Environment Canada Meteorologist Doug Lundquist. “There was 151 mm of precipitation in September. Normally there’s only 51 mm.” “That’s an incredible amount of rainfall.” For context, September is
we broke a daily record,” Lundquist explains. He notes that the sudden rain after a dry and hot summer may have made it feel even more extreme to some people. Those two weather events might be connected through climate change, he adds, but he can’t say with certainty. “One of the things about climate change is that it creates warmer air, and warmer air can hold more water, and what goes up must come down,” he explains. Warmer temperatures over the Pacific this summer may also explain the heavy rain in September. Just because Vancouver saw lots of water fall from the sky last month doesn’t mean it will continue, he adds. While cooler temperatures are likely throughout the fall, predicting precipitation is more difficult and can’t be narrowed down over medium timespans (like months). Additionally, storms, which can bring lots of rain (like the one that dropped 51 mm) are smaller than the systems which affect temperatures and can be fairly specific in where they drop their water. “You have to be right in the right track,” Lundquist explains. “It’s much more finicky than temperature.” By Brendan Kergin

Here’s why you see blue or purple lights in local public washrooms
H
ave you ever accessed a public washroom at a Vancouver business and noticed the lights were tinted blue or purple? The special lights have been installed to dissuade drug use. The reasoning behind the blue or purple-hued lighting is that it’s harder to see superficial veins in these colours of light, explains The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) in a 2019
document. “Blue lights are sometimes installed in public washrooms to discourage injecting drug use. The lights are intended to visually obscure superficial veins, thereby making it difficult to inject drugs intravenously,” they state in the policy position paper. Public restrooms, be they in private or public facilities (from parks to malls to large retail outlets) offer a private, indoor space that can be appealing for drug use. Using

lights that make it difficult to use certain types of drugs is seen as a way to discourage that behaviour without impacting the washroom’s intended use. However, its effectiveness is not absolute and the BCCDC actually recommends against installing blue lights. “While the lights reduce vein visibility, evidence indicates people will attempt to inject under blue lights when they feel confident in their injecting ability and where there are no suitable alternatives,” they state in their position paper. And because the lights reduce visibility, it can lead to riskier drug injection behaviours. “They promote unsafe practices such as deep vein injecting, which can be done without visual identification of the vein. People attempting to inject under blue lights may accidentally inject into an artery or into surrounding tissue,” they note. “They may have trouble measuring and monitoring the amount they are injecting, thereby increasing overdose risk. Poor visibility increases the risk of blood borne virus transmission as it is harder to see and clean up any blood or bodily fluids.” It might also mean someone would attempt to use drugs in other locations nearby, like staircases. For people using the washroom for other uses, having tinted lights can also make it more unsafe, by making it difficult to see what they’re doing or hazardous waste, and obscuring their own bodies which may make it difficult to spot an issue - like spotting blood or bleeding, or changes in bodily fluids. A 2013 UBC study addresses people who had used or were using injection drugs in connection with blue-lit spaces. “The majority [of drug users] had attempted to inject in a blue-lit washroom. While there was general agreement that blue lights do make injecting more difficult, a small number of participants were entirely undeterred by them, and half would use a blue-lit washroom if they needed somewhere to inject urgently,” the study notes. "We had a major roof leak around 11PM in the winter last year and tried calling every company who claimed to be be 24/7. Nobody came or even answered until I called Absolute. Carlos arrived within 45 minutes in a total downpour, got on the roof and stopped the water from entering our bedroom. He identified the problem then scheduled an appointment to come back and fix the roof properly which he did with Vinni. They also replaced our noisy acrylic skylights that were ten years old with glass ones. For the record, glass skylights are so much better than acrylic! Carlos and Vinni are truly welcome to come for a drink in the garden anytime. Also had great communications from HQ throughout." E. H. "Garth and his team fixed a planter that was leaking into our condominium. Excellent work, on time, good communication. The Absolute Team applied a layer of Alsan and granules to our large condominium roof to prolong its service life. Excellent work by the team. Very professional and good value.." M. H.

O
ne of Vancouverbased Lululemon’s biggest competitors has set up shop in the yogawear giant’s backyard. Gap Inc. opened its first Canadian Athleta location, at West Vancouver’s Park Royal, last week. Athleta plans to open a second Canadian store, at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre, in November. Its vice-president of stores and operations, Jennifer Steichen, told BIV that she expects more Canadian Athleta stores to open but that it is too soon to say how fast the rollout will be or how many stores will be open within the next year or two. “We did a deep dive on the GVA (Greater Vancouver Area) and the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). We’re super-excited about continued growth in both of those incredibly important markets,” she said. “I’m headed to Calgary and Edmonton, and also continuing to look at site selection. So we’re excited for
continued store growth into 2022, and beyond.” One main difference between Athleta and Lululemon is that Athleta does not sell menswear. Luluelmon has been increasing revenue from menswear, which last quarter generated about 25% of the company’s sales. BIV asked Steichen how Athleta positions itself apart from Lululemon, and she said her company has a wider selection of sizes, and that this is a key differentiator. “We have over 500 styles, both online and in store, and we believe that the Canadian plus-[sized] market has been historically underserved, and we’re excited to bring all sizes, from double-extra-small to 3X, online and in-store,” she said. She added that Athleta’s range of products includes

workout clothing, as well as lifestyle clothing, although Lululemon says the same thing of its product lines. “Athleta is also more into swimwear and has a sleep line,” said Retail Insider owner and retail consultant Craig Patterson. “That means that, for some, Athleta will be slightly less intimidating, in terms of being a store to visit.” Athleta has about 200 stores in the U.S., with about half of its revenue coming from online sales. “Customers are today, especially during the pandemic, bouncing back and forth between [the] digital and physical world,” Steichen said.
