Vasily Podkolzin’s ice time isn’t a cause for concern — yet

W

hen Vasily Podkolzin scored his first career NHL goal against the Philadelphia Flyers last week, he reacted with pure, unadulterated joy. His joyous screams of, “Yes! Yes! Yes!” could be heard clearly even on the TV broadcast. And then he played just two more shifts the rest of the game and sat out the entire third period.

It’s been an early trend: through his first three games with the Vancouver Canucks, Podkolzin has yet to crack the ten-minute mark in ice time. In fact, Podkolzin is last on the Canucks in average ice time, behind fourth-line forwards Juho Lammikko and Justin Dowling. It’s understandable why Canucks fans might be concerned. In the KHL, Podkolzin was frequently benched or held to minimal minutes by a coach who seemed to resent wasting time on a teenager who was about to leave the KHL to play in Canada. It was

only in the playoffs that Podkolzin was given more free rein and responded by leading SKA St. Petersburg in playoff scoring. Any concern that he might be getting the same treatment with the Canucks is misplaced, however, as the two situations couldn’t be more different. Podkolzin is a raw rookie in the NHL, still unfamiliar with the systems, small ice, and pace of play. Watching him play, so many of his habits look calibrated to the larger ice surface of the KHL, where he’d have more time and space with the puck.

off that line when it clearly wasn’t clicking. “We got going in the second, he gets a nice goal,” said Green after the win over the Flyers. “And then in the third, it just so happened the way the rotations on the lines were — we're not at home, first of all. I had a match in mind but we couldn't get it. And a lot of times when I have a young guy, that hasn't been on the ice for 7, 8, 9 minutes to start a period, I may be protecting him a little bit then and not wanting him to go out and be in a spot where things don't go well.”

It’s just the natural learning process of a young rookie adapting to a different style of game.

“I've been there,” he added. “I've been there where I've sat on the bench for 10 minutes and the coach taps you on to go out, sometimes it's not fair to you either.”

Canucks fans have grown accustomed to rookie players hitting the ground running. Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes are obvious examples, but Nils Höglander fits the bill as well. Last season, Höglander started the season on the second line with Tanner Pearson and Bo Horvat, scored a goal in

his first game, and played over 21 minutes in his second game. Höglander, however, was in midseason form after playing 23 games in Sweden before joining the Canucks. Podkolzin will need more time. This isn’t unusual. Bo Horvat, now the Canucks

captain and averaging over 20 minutes per game, was much like Podkolzin in his rookie seasoon — adapting to the pace of play in the NHL while getting limited ice time. In 7 of his first 9 games in the NHL, Horvat played under 10 minutes.

Head coach Travis Green has already shown that he’s willing to give Podkolzin opportunities, much like he gave Pettersson, Hughes, and Höglander before him. Against the Flyers, Podkolzin started on the first line with Pettersson and J.T. Miller, only switching

If Podkolzin is still averaging under 10 minutes per game a month or two into the season, then it might be worth raising a fuss. Until then, limited minutes are likely best for both him and the Canucks. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

A

truly frightening Halloween decoration has popped up just off Main Street.

Hanging from a thin rope on the front porch of a home is a plastic skeleton with a sign saying 'I DID MY OWN RESEARCH'. It's a reference to people who use social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube to do so-called "research" on COVID-19, finding their way into misinformation, questionable health advice, and outright quackery. The decoration is a real-life version of a popular internet meme that shows a headstone with the same words engraved on it.

F

or over a decade we've been lifted up then let down by a raft of announcements about the fu f tu t re of the floating McDonald's restaurant k own as the McBarge, which fed and kn delighted Expo 86 visitors 35 years ago. I say no more! The thing should be sunk. Officially named the Friendship 500, in 2009 fans of floating burger nostalgia raised their eyebrows when it was announced by owner Howard Meaki k n that the barge would be convert rted into a "waterf r ront development" on the Fras a er Ri R ver, to house multiple restaurants and become a beacon for float plane travelers and boaters. Eight long years passed and in 2017 Meaki kn announced a different plan which threw restaurants overboard in favour of a plan to tu t rn the ru rusting hulk into something called the Deep Ocean Discovery r Centre. The concept was for it to be a “major BC attraction showcasing the history r, technology g , stories and experiences offered in the Pacific,” with an aim to discuss issues of preserv r ation and environmentalism. Fast forw r ard to October 2021 and a recent

interview interv r iew where the owner has revealed that there are now new plans underw r ay to make it part r of "something bigger," and that those plans might include having other (perhaps less derelict?) Expo 86 art r ifacts involved. However, due to unfinished business dealings, he says those plans can't be discussed just yet.

More stories on local news at VancouverIsAwesome.com

If you're like me you've grown tired of seeing the decrepit McBarge get power was ashed every r couple of years for a new announcement about a plan that will likely never come to pass. Like me, maybe you hope that the secret plans that are apparently being made are with the DFO and the provincial

government, and that the "something bigger" that it might become a part r of is the large dive site located on the bottom of the ocean just off Porteau Port r eau Cove Provincial Park. Half lfw f ay betw t een Vancouver and Squamish, the Port r eau Cove dive site is partly part r ly made up of three sunken vessels that were placed there on purp purpose r ose (the 28m Granthall, the 11m Centennial III, and an unnamed 15m sailboat), and an art artificial r ificial reeff netw t ork. They're home to over 100 species of marine life including octopuses, plumose anemones, and lingcod. The site was established as B.C.'s first underwater underw r ater park in 1981, a few years before Expo Ernie made his first appearance flipping burgers in False Creek. According to BC Parks the dive site not only "enhances the growth of marine life" but it also op pens up "opport rtu t nities for recreational diving." I plead to the owner of the McBarge to drag it out from the Fraser and up Howe Sound, sink it at Port r eau Cove, and allow people to finally enjoy it for what it is - a wreck. By Bob Kronbauer

Fireworks ban in effect

T

his Halloween could be one of Vancouver’s quietest, at least in terms of glittery explosions. That's because it's the first Halloween to be celebrated under the city's fireworks ban. On Nov. 1, 2020 the City of Vancouver’s ban on fireworks came into effect. Amid concerns of an increase in the sale and ignition of illegal fireworks or pyrotechnic fans simply turning to the online market, the ban passed with a 7-3 vote at city council. Ultimately, comments regarding fireworks’ impact on wild and domestic animals, their propensity to set fire to private property, and the sounds of explosions being especially triggering for people with PTSD won out. As a result, the last Halloween when Vancouverites could legally set off fireworks went out with a bang. Oct. 31, 2020, saw the Vancouver Fire Department respond to around 400 fire-related calls in the city within a 24-hour time span, 40 of which were confirmed fires. This being the city’s first year with the ban in effect, it’s worth noting Vancouver now joins the majority of nearby municipalities in making such use of fireworks illegal. To date, Richmond, Delta,

Surrey, Langley, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and Abbotsford have all banned fireworks – due to excessive property damage, injuries, and associated costs. North Vancouver city council recently heard from 11 residents on a proposed bylaw prohibiting the sale and use of consumer fireworks. Currently, the existing bylaw requires individuals to purchase a permit from the fire department, and fireworks can only be lit on private property between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Halloween night. The North Shore’s proposed bylaw follows closely in the footsteps of Vancouver’s ban, allowing fireworks at specifically authorized events to be set up and set off by technicians certified under the Explosives Act. Specifically, Vancouver’s bylaw names Chinese New Year, Diwali, Celebration of Light, and Canada Day as events where fireworks could still be let off in the city by those holding both municipal and federal certification. To enforce the ban, hefty fines are used as deterrents. For any violations of the bylaw the fireworks ban is laid out in fines can range from $500 to $10,000. By Cameron Thomson

wave of COVID-19. With the upsurge in other respiratory viruses, a resurgence in influenza can be expected. “A bad flu season can rapidly fill up emergency departments and hospital beds, and as we all know, COVID-19 is already doing a good job at that,” Curry said, stressing the importance of British Columbians taking steps to not spread the flu -- and not just for their own health. “Take the same precautions you are already taking for COVID-19: stay home when sick, wash your hands, cough into your sleeve, wear masks in public areas, and get immunized,” he said. Curry was also asked if people will be more susceptible to the flu because of germ avoidance and social distancing measures over the past year and a half. Curry says the opposite is true as viruses evolve only if given the opportunity to spread to more people. “COVID-19 public health measures have had a secondary effect of

ore often than not, when someone came to the hospital with a respiratory infection nine months ago it was very likely they had COVID-19. Now a professor with UBC’s faculty of medicine says doctors’ "usual suspect" is making a comeback: the flu. Dr. Michael Curry explained in a recent Q&A with the university how this year’s flu season will have some key differences compared to last year. “Last flu season we essentially had no cases of influenza and relatively few cases of other respiratory viruses here in Canada,” said Curry, attributing the lack of flu cases to the increase in COVID-19 infections. However, Curry says common respiratory viruses are back and circulating again. “While we are still seeing COVID-19 in Canada, we are finding other respiratory viruses on a regular basis as well,” he said. Curry fielded questions on how this year’s flu season might interact with the fourth

Company creates art kits for kids displaced by Lytton wildfire

new relief initiative is helping some B.C. children who were displaced by a devastating fire this past summer. On June 30, a massive wildfire spread rapidly through the small village of Lytton, virtually destroying the entire community and displacing hundreds of residents. Vancouver-based investment firm Odlum Brown has partnered with national nonprofit DAREarts to provide 200 creativity kits to kids from Lytton. "In this situation, as a result of the fires, there's a lot of trauma that goes around those things and I think the arts, in particular, are a way of channelling some of that trauma in a more positive way and allow people to be creative in a time when creativity is often the last thing on the list," says Odlum Brown president Debra Doucette (Hewson).

t's one of Vancouver's most iconic landmarks. Gastown's famous steam clock was built as a tourist attraction in 1977 by renowned local horologist (clockmaker) Raymond Saunders. Nestled at the corner of Cambie and Water streets, it's one of only a handful of working steam clocks in the world. The price tag at the time of installation was $58,000. It was paid for by the city, local businesses, and private donors. The clock was originally constructed to cover a steam grate that was part of the city's steam-heating distribution system. The clock's steam engine was manufactured in England and is a type usually used by hobbyists to power large model boats. The clock mechanism was inspired by an 1875 British clock tower design. Despite its name, the old

timekeeper is only partially steam-powered. "Steam and the reliability of that proved to be a problem. They actually ran it, when it was unveiled, with an auxiliary electric motor and that's what's happened ever since," explains civic historian John Atkin. A facility near the Georgia Viaduct provides steam underground that is channelled into the base of the clock and pressurized by a series of valves. A tiny auxiliary electric motor inside the clock also works in tandem with a gravity-fed chain drive that uses steel balls to move the clock's hands. The steam is also responsible for the clock’s distinctive noise, which produces the Westminster chime melody (the same as London's Big Ben) on five brass whistles every quarter-hour. Gastown's clock design was Victorian-inspired as a way

to preserve the historic feel of the neighbourhood. Its bronze base weighs roughly 2,200 pounds. Over the years it's been damaged by cars and was temporarily taken down for some much-needed repairs to the timing mechanism several years ago. The chime volume has also been gradually lowered, as it used to rattle nearby windows. There's even a near-replica of Vancouver's clock in Otaru, Japan, also made by Raymond Saunders. The Gastown Steam Clock remains a fixture in the city and continues to draw onlookers from all over the world. "It is one of the most successful tourist landmarks and probably, outside of the totem poles in Stanley Park, the most photographed object in Vancouver," remarks Atkin. By Thor Diakow

The curated boxes are designed to support youth in caring for their mental health with arts-based expression. The kits include 10 weeks' worth of art activities and supplies. "[These children] need an outlet, especially a creative one, to express some of the frustrations and the feelings and the emotions that they're dealing with. These kits seemed like the perfect place to be able to step in and help with that," explains DAREarts president Jennifer Wilson. DAREarts provides leadership development opportunities, through educational arts, to children in underserved communities across Canada. The creativity kits will be shipped out in the coming weeks.

Local man turns plastic bags into works of art

THOR DIAKOW

I

magine if all those plastic bags from your trip to the grocery r store could be t rned into pieces of art tu rt. One Metro Vancouver man is maki k ng it happen. Roger Brenninkm k eyer is the founder and creative director of PECO (Plastic Essence Collaborative). His Burnaby-based company creates art from unrecycled plastic household waste. Customers purchase designs from PECO's website and are sent an empty box. They fill the box with plastics which are used to complete their finished work of art. PECO also collaborates with corporate partners for larger items. The assortment of plastic is melted, pressed, polished, buffed, and cleaned with a coating of essential oils. The artwork is then framed and shipped to the buyer. Local customers can also arrange for pick-up or drop-off. "We transform their trash into a little bit of treasure," says Brenninkmeyer.

Flexible plastics, such as shopping and bread bags, are currently only accepted at depot facilities in the province, not through curbside collection. According to Recycle BC, just over 20 per cent of these types of plastics are recovered annually. Brenninkmeyer says the key is looking at plastic through

a different lens. "We use it every day, it's a wonderful resource. Would it be perfect not to have in the world? Absolutely. But, think of all the things that you use it for; [we've] got to start thinking in kind of a different way about plastic," he explains. By Thor Diakow

AccuWeather releases full winter forecast for Metro Vancouver

GETTY

M

etro Vancouverites who are hoping for a long ski k season to hit the slopes might be in luck this year. AccuWeather has releas a ed its 2021-2022 winter forecast for Canada and it calls for decidedly wet weather in southern British Columbia — and that's good news for alpine enthusiasts. "The upcoming winter is expected to be fairly stormy from southern British Columbia through the Canadian Rocki k es with many opport rtunities for significant rainf nfall and strong winds along the coas ast," he said. "Abundant snowf w all is expected throughout much of ski k country r from the Coastal Range of British Columbia through the Rocki k es of western Alberta." Above-average amounts of rainfall are expected in Metro Vancouver this winter, which will help ease abnormally dry conditions. According to AccuWeather meteorologist Brett Anderson, the past three winters all brought near to above-normal precipitation, which includes rain and melted snow. "Based on what I see, I think this winter will be wetter than the past five winters in southern British Columbia,"

he said. "I think this winter will cert r ainly put a dent in the ongoing severe drought across south-central part rts of the province. Conditions have already improved across southwestern British Columbia this fall as drought conditions have almost disappeared." But not all British Columbian winter sports enthusiasts will enjoy the same conditions. People may see lower than average snowfall quantities in northern B.C. due to the primary storm track angling so far to the south, Anderson said. All British Columbians should brace for an overall colder, stormier winter season, according to Anderson.

During a La Niña phas ase, which occurs on average every r three to five years, sea surf r ace temperatu t res in the open waters of the equatorial Pacific Ocean dip to below-average levels. By midOctober, a La Niña phase had officially developed, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said in a news release. La Niña's effect on Canada, particularly in the western half of the country, will likely send temperatures falling even lower than they do during the average winter. "This is due to the amplified polar jet stream, which can usher in colder air and more frequent storms." By Elana Shepert

Council approves Shaughnessy rental housing complex next to hospice

V

ancouver city council has unanimously approved a 24-unit rental housing project in Shaughnessy after rejecting the developer’s original proposal in 2019 largely because of concerns identified by a neighbouring hospice. The eight-bed hospice, which serves up to 150 people annually, is still there but its management has entered into a “good neighbour agreement” with the developer, who has made significant changes to the building’s design. “No development next to a hospice is better, but given the circumstances we feel satisfied with the collaboration that’s taking place,” Sarah Cobb, the executive director of the Vancouver Hospice Society, told council last Thursday night at a public hearing. Stuart Howard Architects Inc., on behalf of the Pabla

family, modified the original design from 21 units spread over two townhouse buildings to a single fourstorey structure with a total of 24 market rental units. The building, which will be built on a 1,600 square metre site at 4575 Granville St., will be further set back from the property line it shares with the hospice. Significant landscaping, including trees, will buffer the properties and privacy screens and planters will be added to top floor balconies. By Mike Howell

W

ith eight legs and eight eyes, some spiders look like miniature monsters. Many of them are completely covered in hair, while others have spooky looking, jack-o’lantern bodies. And while it's one thing to spot one of these creepycrawlies in the woods, it's decidedly more disturbing to find one in your home. There are also copious amounts of spiders in Vancouver, so your chances of spotting one (or many) is high. In fact, the Electronic Atlas of the Wildlife of British Columbia reports that there have been a whopping 859 species of spider confirmed in B.C. What’s more, the “spider fauna of the province is estimated to be more than 1000 species.” Many locals also report that they have far

more arachnid encounters in the fall than at any other time of the year. A common misconception is that the spiders, much like rats and mice, are moving inside to find shelter from the elements during the colder months. With this in mind, the Burke Museum notes that spiders don't actually migrate into our homes in the fall and winter seasons. While a few of them might, the majority of them have been cohabitating with you all along - let that sink in. According to Burke Museum, the spiders you find in your home are completely different than the ones you'd find outdoors (or most of them, at least). For instance, it highlights that of the 170 spider species found in the City of Seattle, only eight of the spider species are commonly found both

outdoors and in houses. 137 of them are outdoor species, while 25 are indoor. As such, the whopping majority live rent-free in your abode the whole year-round. Indoor species have adapted to suit indoor climates, and are used to a constant climate, poor food supply, and very poor water supply. Which raises the question: why does there seem to be so many more spiders in the fall? The answer is simple: mates. Male spiders typically venture from their webs in the late summer and early fall in search of females - and the rest is arachnid history. As for dangerous spiders, British Columbians don't really have to worry; the only potentially harmful spider is the Black Widow, and they are rather reclusive. And while their venom is

reportedly four times more potent than a rattlesnake’s, they produce a considerably smaller dose. The Okanagan has the highest concentration of the tiny, black arachnids, and they tend to be found in cellars, basements, woodsheds, and other dark, hidden places. Their webs aren’t particularly artful – they are known as the “tangle-web” spider. So, if you see a really messy web, exercise caution. The Nature Conservatory of Canada notes that you're unlikely to find them in your home, however: "Black widows prefer dark, sheltered spots close to the ground, such as wood, trash or rock piles, or even underneath a house. Here, they spin funnelshaped webs to catch their insect prey." By Elana Shepert

Bikes once again restricted on SkyTrain during rush hour

W

ith ridership on the rise to prepandemic levels, TransLink is once again implementing restrictions on bringing bicycles on board some SkyTrain lines during peak hours. Recently, TransLink updated its rules to once again restrict bikes on the Expo/ Millennium lines during rush hour. "Bicycles are allowed at all times on Expo and Millennium Lines except during weekday rush hours of 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.," states their website. Signs have been added at stations as well. A year ago that rule was suspended as the pandemic led to a drop in ridership. At the

time they saw ridership levels at around 43 per cent of the normal. Bikes are still allowed on the Canada Line. "Bicycles are allowed on any transit vehicle any time except for Expo/Millennium Line trains during rush hours," a TransLink spokesperson tells Vancouver Is Awesome via email. Other restrictions exist regarding bikes on SkyTrains. Riding in stations, trailers, and electric or gas-powered scooters aren't allowed. During rush hours only six bikes are allowed on SeaBuses.
