'We're still on a suicidal path': David Suzuki on climate activists' 14-day Vancouver protest

A

GETTY

fter decades of advocating for the environment in Canada and around the world, David Suzuki says humanity is on a "suicidal path" and little has changed. According to the iconic Canadian environmental activist, time is running out to prevent the most frightening aspects of climate change. As such, he isn't surprised that Vancouver's youth are taking to the streets to protest government inaction. I think it’s an indication of how frustrated people are and civil disobedience seems

to be the next step, he told Vancouver Is Awesome via telephone. "My fear is that if this doesn't get the attention and discussion of our socalled leaders, you know, some [...] people are going to start even more disruptive tactics - and that's what I'm worried about." Suzuki attended Extinction Rebellion's first of "14 days of disruption" on Saturday, Oct. 16, where he spoke to demonstrators and passersby. Members of the organization's Vancouver chapter blocked the intersection of Burrard and Georgia streets in the afternoon and four of them were subsequently arrested. The environmental group has demanded that Canada's provincial and federal governments end fossil fuel subsidies before the 26th annual UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, which is something Suzuki said must happen. "You know what the United

Nations said in 2019: We are facing a loss of biodiversity, unprecedented — and it threatens the biosphere for humans," he underscored. "How can we survive in a world in which humans have taken over the bulk of the planet, eliminated so many ecosystems and species? It's really quite terrifying." Extinction Rebellion member and President of Unifor Local 950 Brent Eichler told V.I.A. that the group knows their demonstrations will make locals angry — particularly those who are behind the wheel. "We understand that and we accept that there is no other way... because we tried every other way," he stated, adding that the protesters must accept "huge personal costs." Suzuki echoed Eicher's words, noting that people "have to think about why they are doing this," highlighting the recent clashes between

demonstrators and police in Fairy Creek. "We're still on a suicidal path. And that's why people are becoming increasingly desperate," noted Suzuki. The environmentalist pointed to activist Greta Thunberg and what he said is her "enormous impact," explaining the teen "cut through all of the garbage that we're getting and just said, 'look, you know I'm a child. I believe I'm taught to take science seriously. And what the scientists are saying is there's no future the way we're going.' It's very, very simple, and look at what she got: children around the world have taken up her message." "But is anyone really listening?" By Elana Shepert

Tony Hawk now executive producer on Vancouver film

I

nternational skateboarding icon Tony Hawk has come on board as an Executive Producer (EP) of the Vancouver-made short film 'Joe Buffalo' which has made the festival rounds and was released to a wide audience for free online this October. The film follows the story of Joe Buffalo, the first residential school survivor to become a professional skateboarder. What exactly does it mean for someone to come on board in this role long after a film has wrapped and been released? Director Amar Chebib tells Vancouver Is Awesome that "it means that Tony is throwing his weight behind it as a celebrity to help it get the attention we feel it deserves." Chebib notes that Hawk isn't investing money into it, as you might assume an EP would do, but is investing his name and his brand. He notes that without the bird man's profile they "would not have gotten coverage in a major

Hollywood industry publication like Deadline," and they are now throwing their hat in the ring for the Oscars. And while there is a huge advantage for the film to have a celebrity endorsement like this, on a personal level Chebib says that "it feels amazing" to have Hawk backing the film, as the director has always been a fan of his. He says, "My younger sister was joking that teenage Amar playing the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on Playstation would be freaking out right now... and he kind of is." Coming up next for the Vancouver director is a film about Darius Sam, a 21-yearold prodigy ultrarunner from Lower Nicola First Nation, just outside of Merritt, B.C. Chebib explains that the story is similar in some ways to Joe's in that the subject also had a very challenging upbringing, "with all the cards stacked against him." The film is set to release next year.

bsolutely massive salmon caught in B.C. Photos of people holding massive Chinook salmon are turning heads on social media in B.C. this month, showing just how big these fish can get. The photos making the rounds came from what is known as an "egg take" that recently took place on the Wannock River in Owekinuxv village in Rivers Inlet, for a hatchery program. Each year a limited number of spawning

male and female salmon are caught, then relieved of their sperm or eggs so that they can be reared, then released as fry into the river system by the Percy Walkus Hatchery. The Wannock River is one of two rivers in B.C. that produce salmon of the size shown in the photo here. The other river is the Kitsumkalum which is supported by the Deep Creek Hatchery and is located a few hundred kilometres to the north. It has been estimated that 22-37% of all the salmon in

the Pacific are of hatchery origin, however it was found that global Pacific salmon abundance in 2020 was the lowest it's been in more than four decades. There are more than 40 salmon hatcheries in this province, and more are on the horizon as the federal government announced a $647-million investment in conservation efforts which will include funding more of these types of facilities. old station wagon and the home they’d owned for three years, was nice, but modest. Friends speculated that the kidnapping might have started with a robbery. The Mings, they said, may have been targeted because they were about to leave on holiday for Taiwan and may have had a large sum of cash handy in anticipation of the trip. More notes followed and the contents led police to suspect that the kidnapping has been the work of one of the Asian youth gangs terrorizing east Vancouver at the time. Seven weeks after the Mings went missing, their bodies were found at the bottom of an embankment in dense bush off the Sea to Sky Highway near Porteau Cove. An autopsy showed that the couple were murdered shortly after they were abducted from their house. If you have any information about these murders please call Vancouver Police 604-7173321, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call crime stoppers 1-800-222-8477.

Ming family was celebrating the wedding of Jimmy’s younger brother John to a Vietnamese woman. The celebration hadn’t gone smoothly. A fight broke out, and onlookers estimated later that it involved many of the 300 mainly Vietnamese guests. Jimmy was tired, and the couple left for their Princess St. home around 10:30 p.m. The children spent the night with their grandparents. Sometime after midnight, kidnappers approached the Ming home from the laneway, smashed a basement window, entered and abducted the couple. The kidnapping was discovered that afternoon when Jimmy’s father Ping Chang Ming brought the children home and found his son and daughter-in-law missing and a ransom note asking for $700,000. He called police. The kidnapping baffled friends and neighbours who couldn’t understand why the young couple was targeted. Jimmy drove an

t the start of 1985, things looked good for Jimmy Ming. At 29, he was the popular manager of the Yangtse Kitchen, the family restaurant that he had helped build from three tables on Denman St. into a thriving Robson St. business. The family was originally from Taiwan and had settled in Strathcona in the early 1970s. Jimmy and his three brothers graduated from King George Secondary School. He married Lily, they had two small children and lived around the corner from his parents. Jimmy typically worked 12 to 15 hour days at the Yangtse Kitchen. Lily learned English at night school, took care of the kids and worked in the restaurant one day a week. Everything seemed to be working out for the family. But by the end of January, Jimmy and Lily had been kidnapped from their home, the restaurant was closed, and the rest of the Ming family lived in fear for their own lives. Steam that built Vancouver: The tale of the S.S. Beaver

T

here are few w other ships so well kn k own by Vancouverites as the Pacific Nort rthwest’s first steamship, the S.S. Beaver. As B.C.’s first steamer, the Beaver had plenty t to do when she first arrived at Fort r Vancouver on April 10,

1836. Built at the Blackwall Blackw k all Yard in London for the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1835, the Beaver sailed across the Atlantic and made the treacherous journey around Cape Horn. It was only when she was in Vancouver that her paddles, boilers and engines were

shipped and eventu t ally connected. For the next 53 years the Beaver proved to be one of B.C.’s hardest worki k ng ships, initially serv r ing as a floating trading post that opened up remote part rts of B.C.’s coast for fu f r trading. A ter 17 years, the Hudson’s Af Bay Company brought in a second, more powerf rful ship and Beaver was relegated to transport r passengers and cargo. The Beaver was a later employed by the Royal Navy v to chart r the British Columbia coast from 1863 to 1870. Then the Beaver was sold to a consort r ium that became the British Columbia Towing and Transport r ation Company in 1874 and towed barges, log booms and sailing vessels. This as it tu t rns out would be the last stage of the Beaver’s life. On the night of July 26, 1888, the Beaver’s hull smashed into the

rocks by Prospect Point in Stanley Park. It’s difficult to say exactly what caused the Beaver to r n aground, but according ru to the Maritime Museum of British Columbia (MMBC) it could have been due to strong winds, foggy g conditions, or a substantially inebriated crew. A Vancouver pioneer named Simson report rted the Beaver’s Captain Marchant was “an old dru runk” and that the crew “were all dru runk the night the Beaver went on the rocks.” A other steamship, the An S.S. Muriel, came to the Beaver’s rescue, but was as unable to remove her from the rocks. Lucki k ly, all of the crew managed to get ashore safely, and the only casualty t was the old ship itself l. The Beaver remained perched and rotting there on the rocks for four years, becoming a popular destination for

Vancouverites who stripped many art r ifacts off the boat. Those art r ifacts, along with the Beaver’s original anchor, paddlewheel shaft, and boiler can be found in the collection of the MMBC to this day. The wreck finally slipped beneath the waves in July 1892 when the wake of the passing steamer Yosemite stru r ck it. Though not much is left of the Beaver today the wreck site is currently used to train divers in underw r ater archeology g techniques. It tu t rns out that British Columbians just couldn't get enough of the Beaver. Seventy t -four years after the mast of the Beaver sank out of view, it was announced that a replica of the ancient side-wheeler would be built in 1966. A project of the Royal Canadian Navy v , the replica was built from an ammunition carrier for the 1966 centennial of the union

of the colonies of Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia. A ter 10 months of work the Af carrier was tu t rned into an exact look-alike of the old Beaver. According to B.C. historian Tom Paterson the second ship to carry r this famous name became a hit at the 1966 festivities. From there Beaver II was owned by many different hands and underw r ent several restorations for events like B.C.’s 150th anniversary r in 2008 and the 2010 Olympics. Then the Beaver II was moored and left to sit idle in Cowichan Bay. She sat there until, on May 7, 2014, she too slid beneath the waves. In the summer of 2021 a B.C. diver visited the wreck of the Beaver II and brought back ghostly images of it sitting upright 120 feet below the surf rface. By Cameron Thomson

Internet community finds wheelchair user's stolen bicycle showing his father giving a smiling thumbs-up next to his bike. While Robin considers the exchange a heartwarming one, he called for more public awareness so these good stories can happen more often. “I'm really glad it got back to its owner, but I think all of us should be looking out for each other and taking action when we see things that aren't right,” Robin said. “That's the only way we build community and resist the apathy and anonymity of living in a city.” For Robin’s efforts, the anonymous Vancouver Coffee Snob offered him a $25 voucher for drinks at local coffee/tea shops. “My wife is a new mom and a coffee fiend, so she'll be enjoying Vancouver Coffee Snob's generous gift.” U/NEEK1997

hat could have easily been a sad story quickly turned wholesome as the internet helped reunite a Vancouver wheelchair user with his bicycle — in less than 20 minutes. On Oct. 19 at 8:15 a.m., Reddit user neek1997 posted that his father's bike was stolen out of their backyard the night before. The bicycle had been customized for the last decade to suit his father’s needs as a wheelchair user; as such, they wrote it was incredibly important to his father’s mental and physical well-being. At 8:32 a.m. that same morning, Robin, who goes by u/anvilman on Reddit, posted that he had found a stolen recumbent bicycle. “I was leaving for work and noticed the bike stashed under a stack of floor mats,” Robin wrote in a message to Vancouver Is Awesome. “I hadn't seen the Reddit post yet, but this was clearly

stolen, so I tried to move it somewhere secure.” After Robin moved the bike, he posted a picture of it to Reddit and called the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). “While I was on hold with the VPD non-emergency line, I got a message connecting me with the original post,” Robin wrote. “I sent the poster my phone number so he could call me and get the location. He picked it up soon after that and got it back to his dad, which was a relief.” About an hour later, u/neek1997 posted a photo

Opinion: Former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm has lost the plot either implement fascism or communism - he's just not quite sure exactly which one. The often-zany Zalm recently sat down for a 30-minute video with Dan Dicks, a controversial independent journalist who was banned

from YouTube in 2020. The theme of Dicks' work mostly revolves around stories he doesn't feel the "mainstream media" covers fairly and refers to the pandemic as "COVID-19(84)," apparently in reference to his thoughts about it feeling Orwellian. He says that "I consider what I do to be a public service to my community and I want to continue to make the world a better place." I watched the entire Dicks/ Vander Zalm interview and once it was over I landed firmly back on earth, feeling like maybe I just got a little stupider for it. Let me walk you through my experience watching it. The video begins with the host leading Vander Zalm down a path with questions that are set up to have him say things I feel he might not otherwise want to until I realize that he clearly does... and he has a lot more to say than I thought he might. Right off the hop he says some stuff that is absolutely not true, and my eyebrows raise just a little bit. He states that China admitted COVID-19 was released from a lab in a place he calls "Yuhan," then corrects himself and says "Wuhan.". The former premier exclaims "I can't believe what's happening," and I think to myself "I can't believe this guy used to lead this great province of ours." Asked about his thoughts on the vaccine passport system and what the host describes as the government overreacting, Vander Zalm spills it. He thinks the "end game" is that "somebody is trying to establish a reset." That reset is, apparently,

meant to either foster in global fascism (which he pronounces "fass-ism") or, more likely to him, communism. Why communism? Well, the virus originated in China, he says, and I have to hit the pause button and remind myself that this is not a fever dream, and a former premier is actually saying these things, and I should probably tell people about it. So I continue watching. I hit play again and listen to him explain how he thinks China is "playing things a little bit smarter... from a communistic standpoint," than Joseph Stalin did. He then says "they" are trying to form some sort of global communist government, based "Somewhere in Europe or Asia or who knows where?" He doesn't say who "they" are, but relays all of this as if it's fact. It's around this point where I start to wonder if he's recently bought hallucinogenic drugs to microdose and mistakenly took a few grams instead of the recommended micrograms. A friend of mine in high school once took a few too many mushrooms when we were on our way out to a bush party, and by the end of the night he was talking very much the way the once-honourable Mr Vander Zalm is in this video. Had the rest of my friends taken the same drugs that he did, they might have been huddled around him, rapt with every word he said, much like the interviewer is in this piece. They might still be out there in that forest, living off the land and doing the bidding of their spiritual leader, Cody.

A

longtime conspiracy theory nut who was also once the premier of B.C., Bill Vander Zalm, thinks that the COVID-19 pandemic is all part of a global plan to

But moving on. Vander Zalm riffs on this global communist government plot as if it should be common knowledge that a grand plan is in place. He waxes on for about 10 minutes and at one point says "I don't know why I'm talking about it," and again I think "I don't know why I'm watching you talk about it." But then, again, I'm reminded of you, dear reader, and my dedication to you being able to read about this without having to watch 30 minutes of Bill Vander Zalm saying these things in a video posted to the internet. He moves on to vaccines, saying "I don't know what all is in there," stopping short of saying there are microchips in them. He claims that in terms of people getting sick, "It's happening to the vaxxed people as much as it's happening to the non-vaxxed people," which is absolutely false: as of last week in B.C., 87 per cent of people in critical care because of COVID-19 weren't fully vaccinated. That number has hovered around 80-90 per cent for weeks now. At one point the host says "You're probably a lot more privy than most" to "the deep state" and how they operate.

Registration is now open to Spring 2022 CONTINUING STUDIES | ecuad.ca/cs

Having resigned in disgrace 30 years ago, Vander Zalm is under the illusion that he is still a credible "government insider", and shares his opinion of the political parties not politicizing the pandemic and banding together to help get us out of it; "They're all singing from the same song sheet [believing there is a pandemic happening], it's the scariest thing I've seen in my entire life." The conspiracy shifts slightly as he cites a "health person" that he knows telling him it's a "corporate pandemic," meant to enrich people, but he gets it back onto the loony track of global communism soon enough. He's convinced that there's a plan to have the world ruled by one government, and that "They need to make a mess of it before they can introduce the changes." Vander Zalm wraps things up by saying that "I just hope that some of the politicians are listening," to his interview, probably not imagining that if they happen to watch it, they might start by howling with laughter and end by feeling genuine concern for the man. Like me, they might feel that unless this is a ruse, Bill Vander Zalm may have completely lost the plot. By Bob Kronbauer

Vancouver man is being recognized for photographs he captured during an intimate moment with a Canadian polar bear and her cubs. Martin Gregus started taking pictures when he was just eight years old; at the time, his family had moved from Slovakia to Vancouver. Now, the 25-year-old has won the prestigious Rising Star Portfolio Award at the Natural History Museum’s 2021 Wildfire Photographer of the Year Competition. "It’s pretty amazing, a little bit overwhelming as you can imagine, but it is kind of a thrill. I am just trying to live in the moment,” he says. The winning snaps are rare, something most people will never get the opportunity to experience. "It was tremendously difficult getting these pictures,” he says. "They were taken in an area that only a handful of people have ever visited, and I do mean a handful. Tourists don’t really go there. Few photographers have gone there in the past.”

Gregus and a team of people he considers close friends travelled to Churchill, Man. to photograph the polar bears in the summer. "It is quite unique, getting there. In general, was a logistical… not nightmare, but crazy getting there and living out in the elements.” Over 14 days, they lived among the polar bears in Hudson Bay. "You live with the polar bears for so long you just grow closer and closer to them,” he says. Gregus’ goal was to capture the polar bears during a time when many people don’t see them. Instead of glacier backgrounds and snow, he photographed them with green grass and blue skies. "That’s really the behind-thescene story to these pictures, to see what these bears really do in the summertime... I think that comes across in those pictures,” he says. "We are so used to seeing bears on ice and on the snow, but the bears we see in the summer aren’t the best looking." His favourite photograph from the portfolio is one that

shows the mother polar bear and her cub napping. "I love that one. The cub actually only has three legs. It was one of those unique behaviours that we saw on the expedition we weren’t really expecting,” Gregus says. Other photographs show the mother polar bear napping with her cubs and a polar bear swimming among beluga whales. "I wanted to get a camera in the water and document that other side of them where they are swimming. Polar bears are actually also known as sea bears because they do tend to be more at home in the water.” Using remote controls to operate his cameras and drones, Gregus was able to get close and minimize the group's presence. "I want people to look at these pictures and see really intimate connections with these bears,” he says. "I find as people, it is easier for us to care for something that we have a relationship with.” By Alanna Kelly

ost NHL players got to where they are now for one simple reason: they hate to lose. Some players get to a certain level on pure talent alone but what separates players from the pack is that competitive edge that drives them to constantly get better and compete for every puck on every shift. Conor Garland is that type of player. Even before he played his first home game as a member of the Vancouver

Canucks, he had already become a fan favourite with his drive to win every puck battle. Garland drove the bus offensively for the Canucks in their six-game road trip to kick off the season, leading the team with 3 goals and 8 points in his six-game point streak. “I just want to win hockey games,” said Garland after the Canucks’ win over the Seattle Kraken. “Whatever I play — chess, checkers, whatever it is — I like to win.

I get to play in the National Hockey League and that's something I don't take lightly.” Garland’s competitive streak is already nearing legendary status. Canucks defenceman Jack Rathbone, who trains with Garland in the summer, joked that skating against Garland doesn’t really let you have an offseason because of how hard he competes on the ice. Is it any wonder that he’s so quickly found chemistry with another famously competitive

Canuck, captain Bo Horvat? “I want to win,” said Horvat at the end of last season, saying what was on the mind of every Canucks fan. “I'm getting tired of being out of the playoffs and not being able to fight for the Stanley Cup.” Horvat and Garland were only put on a line together at the end of the preseason. with Horvat, however, the combination stuck. Their line with Tanner Pearson on the left wing has been the Canucks’ most consistent so far this season. It took a bit of time, of course, for them to find that chemistry. At the end of the road trip in Seattle, it was clear that they were clicking. “I actually said that to them going into the third, we're starting to feel it now,” said Garland. “We really only ended up getting with each other in the third period of the last preseason game, so the first couple of games, I thought we were good but we were feeling each other out. Now I’m starting to feel definitely more comfortable.” Garland pointed out that finding chemistry was more about him than it was about Horvat and Pearson. “I kind of play a little bit of a unique style and they’ve played with each other for a bit, so I was just trying to fit in with them,” said Garland. “We go into stuff about how I play and where I want the puck and where they want the puck. “It’s just become more natural. The first couple games, we made a couple plays but it wasn’t real natural and then tonight, I felt like we were doing it without thinking.” Nowhere was that more evident than Horvat’s second period goal against the Kraken. Garland picked off a puck along the boards and immediately found Horvat open in the middle without even looking. “I screamed right away and he didn’t even have to look, he knew where I was and got it to my stick right away,” said Horvat. That chemistry has been essential for the Canucks, particularly with Elias Pettersson’s slow start. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis
