OPINION

Painter's "garish" depictions of Vancouver real estate moguls spark an important conversation

A

series of 13 unflattering paintings of Vancouver real estate influencers and moguls are now on display at a small gallery space on Main Street at Broadway, and aside from presenting an interesting take on the state of this city, they've also got a pricing model which might raise some eyebrows. Christopher Brayshaw owns and operates Pulp Fiction Books, next door to the CSA Space gallery that he also runs, along with partners Adam Harrison and Steven Tong. We stand in the space at 2414 Main Street as he gives me a basic rundown of the latest exhibition on display painter Rowan Melling's Boss Bodies - which he co-curated. I ask Brayshaw what the prices are and he asks "Well, are you one

of the subjects?" and I tell him no, after a quick glance around the room to make sure that I'm not. He then lets me know that the price is $1,200 per painting, but if the subjects want to buy them they'll have to pay what he essentially thinks is their fair share. Brayshaw notes that he's happy to negotiate with the subjects on pricing, but the selling price for them will be scaled from $1,200 multiplied by the difference between a living wage in Vancouver, and the average wage of a CEO. So they don't pay market value, it's a sort of reverse "pay what you can" model for those who can afford more. The wage-gap pricing is as much of a statement as the work itself, which offers "garish" depictions of people who, an accompanying

essay states, are protected by the media here, which "deflect" away from the issue of the causes of the increase in real estate prices. Some of the subjects are developers like Ian Gillespie and Michael Audain, some are high profile real estate owners like Chip Wilson, and a few are connected more loosely, as founders of PR companies and others that work with developers. The above-mentioned accompanying essay is written by Dan Adleman, and it calls out a number of Vancouver-based news media outlets directly Vancouver Is Awesome included - expressing the opinion that they (we) are "developer-funded" and that we work to protect the mostly-rich-and-somewhatfamous subjects of the artwork as their cronies, and cronies of

When you walk in our door, the boss gets up to help you. That’s just how an owner operates.

their cronies. The gist is that a "seductive media ecosystem" is to blame for the rise in real estate prices in this market.

say about it [the exhibition]... That’s because the exhibition, in its own modest way, challenges a fantasy system to which so many of us remain indentured." From the privileged place where I sit (as the Publisher and Editorin-Chief of V.I.A.) the issue with the "fantasy system" seems like it might be on both sides. Perhaps we don't give people a clear enough window into our businesses, so they begin to fantasize about what it actually looks like in here, and how we operate. Looking at V.I.A.'s financial statements (which it's my job to regularly keep an eye on), real estate ads make up less than 1% of our total revenue. I can't speak for other outlets, but we write news where there is news, and we don't work to protect anyone who pays us to place ads. Again, from where I sit I can see that one reason why the local media might not "have much to say" about this show is that they hadn't heard about it. I only learned of it when I noticed a poster for it on the wall of Pulp Fiction Books, which I saw in an unrelated tweet that they retweeted. I found it myself, randomly on Twitter. Our outlet never received a press release or an invitation to the show,

and I initially just wanted to cover it as a challenge, because they said we wouldn't. Another reason the local media won't have much to say about it is that there are very few full-time arts reporters anymore. The Globe and Mail's Marsha Lederman is the only one I know of. We don't ever review art shows in the way I'm doing here, because people don't generally read them on our website I've made an exception partly because I think this subject is worthy of exploring. Perhaps it's time for a more open conversation about the housing crisis in this city, between the media and residents. It's an issue that we and other outlets cover daily, but we're still somehow seen as blame-worthy for its existence by some. And while I don't agree with the artist and essay-writer's take that the subjects of this art show are hideous monsters to be reviled, we likely have a lot more in common than they might think.

For those looking looki k ng to view the work themselves and read the entire essay, I would highly encourage you to do so. The gallery is located at 2414 Main Street, and it's open whenever Pulp Fiction Books is. Simply ask for the key to the space at the bookstore, leave your driver's license, and you can check it out for yourself. Boss Bodies is showing until December 12, 2021. By Bob Kronbauer

5 new must-try restaurants

T

he one constant about Vancouver's restaurant scene is that it's always changing. Doors closing one day can mean a fresh opportunity for someone else to open up the restaurant of their dreams - or expand their empire. While there's a lot to be said about dining out at your favourite familiar spots, when you're in the mood to try something new, there's always plenty to choose from in the city. We've rounded up 5 of the freshest new restaurant openings in Vancouver. Put these just-opened spots on your must-try list this fall.

This is a new destination in Chinatown for Italian fare, specifically eats inspired by street food in Florence, Italy. The day-to-night spot offers casual lunch fare centred on simple sandwich made using schiacciata, a bread similar to focaccia, that the owner grew up enjoying in Italy. Bei and Kissa Tanto is all about Singaporean comfort eats, like laksa, nasi goreng, and kaya toast. While the restaurant currently offers daytime service only, Nancy Go Yaya is aiming to feature a nighttime wine bar experience soon.

Röosh - 2 Water St If you blinked, you missed Country Roads BBQ taking up residence in place of Peckinpah in Gastown. Now the address is home to Röosh, a restaurant that celebrates Swiss comfort eats, like rosti (pan-fried potatoes) and fondue.

Laboratory Sous Vide Cuisine - 575 W Georgia St For something a little different, check out Laboratory in downtown. The restaurant, which serves lunch and dinner daily, is centred on foods made using sous vide, a technique

of cooking ingredients in a water circulator that have been vacuum-sealed in bags. The result is dishes finished quickly and made with less cooking oil or butter.

Ça Marche Crêperie -

1471 Continental St

A new spot for authentic French crêpes has just opened in Vancouver. Situated along the growing "restaurant row" at the Vancouver House development, Ça Marche comes from the team behind Kitsilano's enduring Au Comptoir French bistro. Here you'll find a menu of savoury (i.e. smoked salmon, Parisian ham, or eggplant) buckwheat crêpes or sweet (i.e. Suzette, banana, or spiced honey) traditional crêpes. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Monday from 5 to 10 p.m. By Lindsay William-Ross

East Van diner closes after 48-year The Slocan "has been owned by 5 Greek guys along [the] way....Peter, Peter, John, Gus and now Tasoe," describes the owner on The Slocan's Yelp page. "As the current guy, I feel The Slocan is owned by its customers and I am simply a custodian. A landmark of the neighbourhood, decades of families, longshoremen, police fire ambulance personnel, hockey stars, plumbers, politicians etc have all passed through and continue to patronize us!! All I want to do is feed you well!!"

Patrons of The Slocan appreciated the venue's hearty breakfast platters in particular, great for capping off a night out, or for refuelling the morning after. The Slocan's tenure came to an end due to redevelopment, according to the Vancouver East Village. Though this is it for now for The Slocan, the owner hints there could be a resurrection at some point: "Watch out for 2.0-Keep you posted!" reads the parting social media post.

his month brought the end of a nearly half-century run for an East Vancouver institution, as The Slocan shut its doors Nov. 14. "What an amazing run... 48 years!" remarked the beloved diner on social media. Located at 2715 East Hastings Street in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, The Slocan was known for its classic American-style greasy spoon fare, but it was also what the current owner called a "secret Greek" diner.

It’s been the same modus operandi for Benning since he was hired, sacrificing long-term assets for shortterm gain. It’s why a bevy of second-round picks were traded for middling NHL players, all of whom have long since left the organization. It’s why a promising prospect in Jared McCann, who made the Canucks as a 19-year-old, was traded for Erik Gudbranson just one in a long list of terrible defencemen Benning has acquired. It’s why Benning repeatedly failed to trade away veteran players for draft picks and prospects, waiting far too long to realize when a season was a lost cause. The most damning element of this focus on short-term success is that it hasn’t led to any short-term success. Instead, it’s resulted in

wasted years for both Canucks players and fans. Canucks captain Bo Horvat has made the playoffs just twice in his seven-year career. In his second stint in the playoffs, he scored 10 goals in 17 games, providing his bonafides as a big-game player, but the team didn’t build on that all-too-brief success. Now his eighth year looks to be wasted again. Even worse, the Benning era wasted the final years of Daniel and Henrik Sedin. Instead of spending their final years as second-line players supporting a new core, they were spent in a spiral as the team sunk to the NHL’s basement. The team didn’t make the playoffs again with the Sedins after Benning’s first year on the job. “I don’t know how I walk into the room and tell these guys, ‘Strip it down.’ I’m not sure it’s fair to these guys,” said the then-president of hockey operations Trevor Linden when talking about the team continuing to push for short-term success instead of being willing to rebuild. But if the Canucks had instead committed to a rebuild after their disappointing firstround exit from the playoffs in 2015, they could have been back in the playoff race before the Sedins retired. Before they were let go in 2014, both Mike Gillis and John Tortorella — the GM and head coach that preceded Benning — emphasized that the team needed to rebuild. Tortorella called the core “stale” and added, “It needs youth. It

needs a change...We’re not in 2011.” Gillis argued the Canucks “need to get younger, faster, and stronger” and pitched a rebuild to ownership as early as 2013. Francesco Aquilini rejected the idea and the team hired Benning, who didn’t argue for a long-term rebuild but said when he was hired, “This is a team we can turn around in a hurry.” The issue is not that rebuilds take time. The issue is that the Canucks never truly committed to a rebuild in the first place. Any “rebuilding” was entirely incidental, a result of a few good picks at the NHL Entry Draft — the same picks every team gets each year. And now the team has already wasted the early years of the careers of the players they got for those picks: Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes, and Thatcher Demko. When will the wasted years end? By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

nder general manager Jim Benning, the Canucks have missed the playoffs in five of the last six seasons. After a brutal three-game road trip where the Canucks lost by a combined score of 19-to-6, they’re well on their way to missing the playoffs again. Benning was all-in on this team, aggressively trading away two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and two third-round picks over the last three years and making a risky bet on Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s long-term contract. Those are the moves of a team on the verge of Stanley Cup contention but the Canucks don’t even look like a playoff team.

Local man creates ephemeral leaf art creative, like paint with no brush. "I've always noticed these beautiful pools of leaves under trees before wind comes through," he says, "almost like a colour shadow of the tree. They invited some sort of design." He was, in part, inspired by zen gardens and the patterns that are created in the little, stony landscapes. Another piece is the temporary nature of the designs. "It's important that it's ephemeral," he says. "I'm a huge fan of ephemeral art, from seasonal things like sandcastles, snowmen, jacko-lanterns." The interaction of the creator with the natural world as it's in flux is a big part of the leafy designs. By the time he's done a design it may already be getting destroyed a little, as the wind starts moving leaves about. Maybe it'll last a little longer; it depends on the environment. This year's season is almost over, he says, though it wasn't as good as 2020. The weather put a literal damper on things. However, he's keeping his eye out for a little longer after having a good experience with a gingko tree recently, that was still shedding some leaves. He likes looking for a couple of essential things. One is a good viewing location, so that people can see the design properly. That either means the piece needs to be on a slope or there needs to be a vantage point for people to look down on the (essentially) 2D

piece of work. The other important factor is contrast. Raking up brown leaves on brown dirt doesn't make a very good design, but bright red on deep green grass catches eyes. How many leaves are around is also important. Too many and he's making big lumps. Too small and it doesn't really work. Next year he intends on continuing his art, with Vancouver parks as his

template. Typically he hits areas in English Bay, Stanley Park, and south of False Creek, so it might be worth keeping an eye out in 11 months. Next year might bring a new twist; he's considering leaving a rake at a site after he's started a design. "Then I can come back later to see what became of it," he says. "So people can either choose to add to it or help maintain it."

NIK RUST / @RAKEMOB

I

t's only at a specific time of year you'll see the foliage-based work of Nik Rust. The local designer is behind some of the unique, intricate designs left in some of Vancouver's parks and public areas this past fall. Going by the handle @ rakemob on Instagram, he raked leaves into simple but precise circles around the trees they fell from, creating patterns of concentric circles like ripples of water or sound waves emanating from deciduous trunks. "The idea has been bouncing around in my head for at least a decade," he tells Vancouver Is Awesome. "Falls would come and go and I wouldn't get to it." But, like many people, the parks were the place to be with the pandemic in play in 2020, and he finally put rake to leaf and got to work. "Everything was kind of different as far as the day-today," he says. "Parks were being used in ways they never had before." He goes out early to create his art, so as people head out at the start of their day the designs are already in place, having appeared as if out of nowhere. While the majority of people who see his art have no idea how it got there, some early risers do catch him. "Tons of people come up and approach me," Rust says. "Some people are baffled, and want to know why it's happening, and some people are super stoked." The trees and leaves, he says, offer up the chance to be

Remembering Aaron Webster: Community fundraising for slain man's Stanley Park memorial

It was friend Tim Chisholm who found Webster. He and other friends of Webster’s are reaching out

+

to the LGBTQ2S+ community and its allies for help raising the $7,000 needed to refurbish the bench and plaque. Vancouver-West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert is glad the call has gone out to maintain the memorial. “It’s a very important place for us to go and remember him and the acts of hate over many years,” Chandra Herbert said.

Webster’s attackers used pool cues, a golf club and baseball bats when they attacked him, the court heard. They claimed they were looking for “peeping toms.” Instead, they found Webster

of manslaughter in BC Supreme Court on Feb 8, 2005. He's one of three people convicted in Webster's killing.

Of the three, two youths pleaded guilty in the case and both have finished their sentences.

T

wenty years ago, Aaron Webster was severely beaten in a gay cruising area of Stanley Park. He died in a friend’s arms at the scene shortly after. Now, an appeal has gone out to refurbish a bench and plaque, raised in Webster’s memory near Second Beach. The monuments, located at the intersection of two paths, also serve as a reminder of the violent homophobia that is not unknown in the Lower Mainland. A year after the killing, a memorial calendar was published to raise funds for the bench. Webster, a noted photographer, took most of the images in the calendar.

A fourth male, Danny Rao, was acquitted in adult court on Feb 8, 2005, the same day Cran was convicted. Following his acquittal, he began screaming, “f**k you” at court spectators.

In one of the youth’s cases, however, the judge added a hate motivation designation to the teen’s sentence, although the prosecutor had chosen not to pursue it as a hate-motivated crime.

“I fail to see why this cannot be described as a gaybashing,” Judge Valmond Romilly ruled, rejecting the youth’s claim that his actions were not motivated by a hatred of gays. Romilly said it was hard to believe that the youth could be “so naive that [he] did not notice this area was frequented by gays.” The attack horrified the city’s LGBTQ2S+ community, which waited for months as police worked to get a break in the case. When it came time for BC Supreme Court Justice Mary Humphries to sentence Cran, she called the attack random, cowardly and terrifying. “What is so chilling about this case is that this group seems to have done this for some reprehensible

and almost inconceivable concept of entertainment,” Humphries said in sentencing Cran. “He must pay for this crime,” Humphries said. The day after Webster’s death, Murray Bilida organized a march in the West End. Hundreds of people marched through downtown streets to the site of Webster’s death. Other marches and vigils followed. A community meeting on how to combat homophobia was also held at a Davie Street hotel. The funds for the memorial must be raised by the end of December 2021. The Park Board released a short video last week of Chum salmon spawning in Spanish Banks Creek, which was daylighted in 2000. the DFO's Salmonids in the Classroom program. Children in Vancouver essentially adopt a batch of fertilized salmon eggs that live in a temperaturecontrolled aquarium in their classrooms. When they hatch, the kids feed the fish every day, then release them into creeks. These releases generally take place in April and May. The salmon will spend a period of time in the creeks before making their way out into the ocean. Four years later, they return to where CONTINUE ON PAGE 13

'Discreditable Conduct': VPD officers suspended for posing near dead body

wo Vancouver police officers were suspended after being caught on video in February of 2021 posing with a body that washed up on the shore of Third Beach in Stanley Park. The incident was caught on video by Zachary Ratcliffe when he was out for a walk near the popular beach and spotted the body. In the footage he notes the two Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers near the body. Police stated at the time they were waiting for the coroner to arrive. The video shows one officer walking near the body and posing for a photo. "The brazen nature of the fact they thought it was OK to publicly and openly take pictures of one another in front of a deceased person, to me, seemed insensitive and conduct unbecoming a police officer," Ratcliffe told media at the time.

THE TIME IS NOW

The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) was asked to be a part of the investigation. "That investigation, which was completed by the VPD, determined that the officers’ conduct in these circumstances constituted misconduct, specifically Discreditable Conduct. The VPD imposed a period of suspension as a disciplinary measure," writes Deputy Police Complaint

Commissioner Andrea Spindler in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. All suspensions under the Police Act are without pay. The OPCC reviewed the matter and it's now concluded, she adds. In an email to Vancouver Is Awesome, the VPD says the two have received and served their discipline. By Brendan Kergin with files from the Canadian Press

Toy drive looks to save Christmas for Lower Mainland families

W

ith donation numbers hurting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, gifts are being sought for a toy drive at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) grounds to be held this month. Most years the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau (LMCB) ships over 145,000 items and around $70,000-worth of supermarket gift cards to families across Metro Vancouver. Last year though most of the events the bureau collects

SALMON SPAWN

donations at were cancelled, causing donations to drop by about 25,000.The bureau was still able to distribute a five-ton truck full of three to 4,000 toys across Vancouver last year but the need is still great for the rest of the Lower Mainland. Chris Bayliss, director of the LMCB says 30 per cent of the donations are distributed around Vancouver while the rest go to cities like Surrey. "Last year we shipped [Surrey] over 12,000 toys, which sounds like a lot -- it kind of was -- but some years

we ship them more," Bayliss said. As such the LMCB is once again hosting a two-day drive-thru event at the PNE grounds on Nov. 19 between 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Nov. 20 between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To enter the drive-through you’ll need to enter at Gate 6 on Renfrew Street near the Pacific Coliseum. Anyone wanting to make a monetary donation via cash or tap or donate a new, unwrapped gift is encouraged to visit the event.

they were released in order to spawn. Vancouver City Councillor Michael Wiebe tells V.I.A. that there are a number of daylighting efforts getting underway in the city right now. Wiebe says that Canyon Creek, which is near Spanish Banks Creek, will begin getting daylighted soon. Tatlow Creek in Kitsilano should see construction

starting in 2022. A longerterm project is China Creek, just south of Science World. The councillor also notes that "Kinross Creek and Vivian in East Fraser Lands are also an opportunity." Nature photographer and videographer Fernando Lessa shot the video of the salmon for the Park Board. He tells V.I.A. that there's no use in going to try to see

them this year, as raccoons have already "done a pretty good job" of eating all of the fish, which would have likely already spawned and were holding in the river, where they end their own life cycle. However, there should be more salmon returning to the creek around this time next year. By Bob Kronbauer
