Age is just a number: How Tapestry defies ageism in all its forms Tapestry encourages ability and potential at every age in its active aging communities for independent adults. In March 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report identifying ageism as a global challenge and calling for urgent action against age-based stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Ageism has been associated with poorer health, social isolation, earlier death and significant negative impacts to global economies as the contributions of older adults are dismissed or discounted, ultimately limiting opportunities to “secure the health, well-being and dignity of people everywhere.” Tapestry, which operates two communities for independent adults in idyllic Vancouver neighbourhoods, firmly resists efforts to define people by the number of birthdays they have celebrated, knowing from experience that age is just a number and that sweeping generalizations about physical and cognitive ability based on age are inappropriate. As individuals age, they

want to continue to pursue their purpose and passions, share their time with others, and contribute to the community in meaningful ways. In Tapestry communities, there are many residents over 80-years-old who regularly walk or run 10 kilometres, teach classes, mentor students and participate in exciting adventures.Tapestry’s residents are beacons for “embracing a new age”; shifting the paradigm on aging and demonstrating that you can remain physically healthy and mentally alert by living in a wellness-focused community that facilitates social connection and engagement. One thing you will never hear at Tapestry is that an activity or program is impossible due to age. Tapestry communities don’t place restrictions on life experiences. This sentiment was proven by a group of residents who experienced the thrill of a lifetime (and made headline news) when they ventured out on Toronto’s EdgeWalk, the world’s highest

full circle hands-free walk on a five-foot wide ledge encircling the top of the CN Tower. At 1168 feet above the City of Toronto, this group of residents fearlessly leaned off the edge of the Walk, demonstrating that age has no limit when it comes to exploring new adventures and possibilities! Every day, Tapestry communities provide residents with endless opportunities to engage in programs and shared experiences that span the 7 Dimensions of Wellness to strengthen and nourish mind, body, and spirit. Even more, Tapestry’s unique culinary offering balances exceptional taste with nutrition, recognizing that how we fuel our bodies is an essential ingredient in staying healthy and well.

Visit DiscoverTapestry.com to view their events or contact Tapestry for more information about living in an active aging community that welcomes possibility, encourages potential and knows that living an inspired and meaningful life has no limits!

As we near the holiday season, Tapestry’s communities have assembled a bustling wellness calendar filled with an incredible array of activities and events to keep residents engaged, active, healthy, and well. Anyone interested in experiencing life

“When I run, I always run as fast as I can.” A Tapestry resident since 2012, Yul regularly runs10 Km through Vancouver’s Pacific Spirit Park as part of his fitness regime. In 2016, he won his age category in the Boston Marathon. For Yul, wellness is the key to happiness. He inspires our ressidents with his passion and positive approach to life.

OPINION IS AWESOME THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2021

VANCOUVERISAWESOME.COM

O

n November 15th a rogue chip barge washed ashore at Sunset Beach, inspiring endless social media posts, multiple parody Twitter accounts, and a great deal of media attention. The next day an unsuccessful attempt was made at freeing it from its rocky, West End prison, using a single tug boat. At the time of this writing, there are plans underway to make another attempt on December 6th, coinciding with a 5.1-metre king tide. I say leave it where it is, permanently. Here's why.

1. It's infinitely better than the McBarge I recently wrote in these pages that the McBarge belongs on the bottom of the ocean, partly because it's derelict and is a reminder of many broken promises. The English Bay Barge offers a new hope. It's a fresh addition to our shoreline with zero baggage, and endless potential.

2. It will attract tourists When we get into a postCOVID world we're going to need new and exciting attractions to draw people back to our city. This thing has made national news, who wouldn't want to see it in person? 3. It will help the environment Projects have been underway for a decade that aim to bring herring back to spawn in False Creek. These fish “see a nice clean surface and they spawn on it,” said one streamkeeper, regarding how they essentially just need more surfaces to lay their eggs on around here. The English Bay barge is fresh, clean, and ready for spawners. 4. It gives us something to talk about besides the price of real estate When you walk past this thing everything just fades away. You stare up at it like "Dude, that's crazy. That thing is so big." At least two per cent of the conversations you have with your friends after seeing the barge will

Last Thursday morning, over the course of five trips, the GVFB flew 5,000 pounds of food to Hope Food Bank and Camp Hope. Paolini says some of the food will be used to cook hot meals for evacuees at the reception centres while some will be taken up to the Sunshine Valley and Boston Bar. He points to one of the charity's major suppliers, BC Fresh Vegetables. "Literally [getting] phone calls saying, 'Tell us what you need and we'll be there.'" That generosity also came in the form of helicopter rides, to get the food where it needs to go. Around the same time GVFB was contacting food banks in need, an anonymous company reached out to offer aircraft and pilots for free. "It's amazing," he says, adding another dropoff took place this Monday, in Merritt.

Local artist reimagines Pokémon with Tsimshian style

C

Tsimshian tradition (with ovoids and u-shapes), though he is learning Salish designs right now (with crescents, trigons and negative space). Gray has other designs well, including pieces for local Pride celebrations and a design used at a Vancouver Canucks' game in honour of the discovery of children's graves at residential school's grounds; he's also working on a new mural in downtown Vancouver. His favourite recent piece is a circular design with a raven, eagle and orca; his favourite Pokemon piece is the chandelure.

The art has turned into a business opportunity as well, now. Stickers are sold at an Abbotsford store his sister-in-law works at called House of Cards.

"They sell them like hotcakes," Gray says. "It's the perfect market." It's been going well enough he's calling his purchase of Pokémon Snap a business expense since it has excellent reference material for Gray's designs. He notes that keeping them in stock right now may be difficult as the company he works with to print the stickers may have been affected by the floodwaters in the Fraser Valley (his own home was hit by high waters as well).

CHASE GRAY

hase Gray had been interested in art since high school, but hadn't pursued it too seriously until the beginning of 2021. When his hands started causing problems while crocheting, he turned to digital art. Gray, who's Musqueam and Tsimshian, took his ancestral background and mixed it with his childhood when he would play Pokémon on a Gameboy he got when he was six. "I was like screw it, I'm just going to draw for a bit and see where that goes," Gray tells Vancouver Is Awesome. "I like Pokémon; always have since I was a little kid." "I just wanted to do things I'd never seen before that I thought would be cool," he adds. While Pokémon have been a focus, there have been other designs too. Some, like Digimon or Studio Ghibli pieces, are similarly inspired by pop culture. Others, like a train or space shuttle, are still nontraditional subject matters while not coming from pop culture. "It's like finding subject matter that people my age and everybody would find relatable and making them see it from an indigenous perspective," Gray says. He notes his work is in the

anadian comedian and longtime Vancouver resident Brent Butt has let the internet know that, no, he will not be endorsing a new limited edition series of Tim Hortons' popular Timbits donut holes. And they will most certainly NOT be called "Butt Holes." Butt issued the comment in a tweet, responding to a Canadian Press article written by journalist Brett Bundale (which is a name strangely similar to "Brent Butt") and posted on the Toronto Star's website (a story we also ran), which outlined the new partnership pop star Justin Bieber launched with the donut giant. Timmies will be releasing limited-edition "Timbiebs" Timbits on Nov. 29, 2021. Butt joked that Bieber must have been the second choice after they approached the star of Corner Gas and he turned them down, saying “Ohhhhhh... ok... now I know who their second choice was after I said no to their "Butt Holes" pitch.”.

Canucks fan causes stir with custom 'Thank You Jim' jersey

Business Owners:

We’re here for you

@CHESTERX22 / TWITTER

T

he Vancouver Canucks had a big game last Wednesday night against the Colorado Avalanche. Coming off a dreadful three-game road trip that caused a crisis of confidence among even the most positive and optimistic fans, the Canucks were looking to prove themselves. Some fans in attendance, however, weren't just there to see if the Canucks could bounce back but to voice their displeasure with the direction of the franchise. One fan got creative with his protest, holding up a seemingly positive "Thank You Jim" sign in the front row that was very visible for all to see. It's only seemingly positive because "Thank You Jim" became a sarcastic catchphrase for those who haven't been happy with the work of Canucks general manager Jim Benning. If there's any doubt that the "Thank You Jim" sign was sarcastic, it was erased when pictures and video hit social media of what the sign wielder was wearing: a Canucks jersey customized with a "Thank You Jim" namebar, along with the namebars of players deemed to be some of Benning's biggest missteps. The fan, who goes by Chester Ming on Twitter, says that he is a season ticket holder but is fed up with the

current regime. "I told my ticket rep that if Benning is still in charge, and ownership doesn’t admit to their failures, I’m out," said Chester. For Chester, getting season tickets was a lifelong dream. "I was reading Luigi Aquilini's bio the other day and it reminded me of me a bit," said Chester. "I’m an immigrant who grew up in East Van. My parents had nothing, unlike most Chinese immigrants you see now." "I became a huge Canucks fan growing up. We couldn’t afford to go to games, not even back in the 90s or 2000s," he continued. "My life goal from when I was eight was to be able to make enough money to afford Canucks season [tickets]." When he got his first job at the PNE, he started buying tickets to Canucks games and collecting jerseys, saying he now has over 200 Canucks jerseys. "I’m old now, am successful professionally and have seasons ticket," he said. "By my math, I’ve spent $25k between buying gameworn [jerseys] from VanBase and my seasons the past 12 months. I am definitely one of their most financially supportive fans." The jersey is a repurposed signed

Jake Virtanen jersey as he clearly did not care to keep the Virtanen jersey intact. With help from his jersey guy in Toronto, he created the full "Thank You Jim" jersey. "I made it because this is a last stand for me," he said. "Childhood dream but screw this. I can think of a million different ways to better spend $10-20k a year. The money part is important to me. I ain’t just talking trash without putting my money where my mouth is." The "Thank You Jim" phrase started last February. In the midst of a losing streak when "Fire Benning" was regularly trending on social media, Sportsnet 650's James Cybulski argued that Benning had done a lot of good things too, giving the drafting of Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes as prime examples. "How about if you're wanting to turn the page, how about keep it to a 'Thank you, Jim,'" said Cybulski. Canucks fans obliged, with the sarcastic "#ThankYouJim" hashtag trending on Twitter after the Canucks once again lost that night. Now, with Chester's nameplateladen jersey, it may trend again. He's apparently not done either. "I will be back," he said. "I have another jersey ready. Look out." By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

Vancouver is getting one of the first electric firetrucks in the world

O

ur city is soon going to be on the leading edge of firetruck technology. Vancouver Fire Rescue Services has placed an order for the Rosenbauer RT, an electric firetruck. It's expected to arrive in late 2022, says Deputy Chief Tyler finlandiahealthstore.com

Moore, and after firefighters are trained on it locals should see it on the streets in 2023. "Rosenbauer ran a program looking at the future of firefighting; one of the things that came out of their multiyear project was an electric firetruck," Moore tells Vancouver Is Awesome in a phone interview. "They were the first to come to the market and so we were the first Canadian fire department to put in an order." Three other electric firetrucks are currently deployed in the world, in Berlin, Amsterdam and Dubai. Los Angeles is getting one built right now. Vancouver's is next on the list,

Moore says; when staff went over to Austria recently they saw the pump partially assembled for the Vancouver truck. The Rosenbauer RT is a pump truck; it rolls up to a fire and hooks into a hydrant or water source and pumps that water onto the fire through a hose. While that's its specialized purpose it can handle all medical and rescue tasks as well, like any other diesel pump truck. There are a few differences between the usual trucks and the new one. Obviously, the biggest is the power source. The system is set to be recharged incredibly quickly and can power the truck for 100 km of driving; Moore notes that in Vancouver they usually only drive five to 10 km, and never anywhere near 100 km. And if they do need power for an extended period of time there is a range extender, a 350 hp diesel engine from BMW which can refill the batteries faster than driving depletes them. Using that it can go another 300 to 400 km. The electric system also powers the pump, a 1,500-gallonper minute system. With the pressure provided by the city's hydrants, the pump can operate for three to four hours on battery, or up to nine hours using the range extender; this is all very similar to conventional trucks, Moore says. In Berlin the range extender has only been needed twice, the city's fire chief told Vancouver staff, Moore adds, and the truck has operated 99.81 per cent full electric. By Brendan Kergin

N

o, precognition isn't a thing. But people who develop new designer drugs are predictable, it seems. Researchers at Vancouver's University of British Columbia (UBC) and other universities have trained a computer to predict the molecular structure of new drugs. "There is an entire world of chemical ‘dark matter’ just beyond our fingertips right now. I think there is a huge opportunity for the right AI tools to shine a light on this unknown chemical world,” says Dr. Michael Skinnider in a press release. He completed the research as a doctoral student at UBC. Designer drugs are newly designed drugs that skirt the law; they typically are very similar to previously developed drugs and have similar effects, but are different enough to not technically fall under the laws regulating the drug they were made to mimic, like new versions

of bath salts and synthetic opioids. Using data collected from around the world on illicit drugs, researchers trained the computer to come up with new drugs that hadn't been created yet, but that would fit the parameters. It came up with 8.9 million different chemical designs. Then they compared 196 newly created designer drugs that didn't exist when the computer was initially programmed, with those it had come up with. Computer, a deep neural network, had come up with more than 175 of the drugs. “The fact that we can predict what designer drugs are likely to emerge on the market before they actually appear is a bit like the 2002 sci-fi movie, Minority Report, where foreknowledge about criminal activities about to take place helped significantly reduce crime in a future world,” explains the University of Alberta's Dr. David Wishart, who was the senior author on the research paper.

Correction Notice

In the circular beginning Wednesday, November 24, 2021, we featured some items that, due to the ongoing global freight issues, we are unsure of when we will have these items in stock. Those items are: ● 7.5 ft. Pre-Lit Augusta Cashmere Pine Tree at the Introductory Offer of $154.99. ● 80/20 Quilt Batting by Loops & Threads™ on sale for 17.99, Reg. 28.99. ● 30” x 40” Shadow Box by Studio Décor® on sale for 74.99, Reg. 199.99.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Now that the computer can predict what chemicals are likely to appear in the near future, law agencies and public health officials can get a head start on things. Previously it would take months to identify a new designer drug after it had been found by authorities. Now it takes days. “The vast majority of these designer drugs have never been tested in humans and are completely unregulated. They are a major public health concern to emergency departments across the world,” says Dr. Skinnider. The model did more than just identify the structures; it also was able to predict which were more likely to appear in the marketplace. While the technology was used to identify drugs this time, it could be used in other research on molecular structures. By Brendan Kergin

The army once trained at Kits Beach

O

ver 75 years ago Canadian soldiers were in the midst of fighting on European soil, but that didn't mean locals didn't see men in uniform. It was determined that Kitsilano Beach would be the site of an

unusual sight as soldiers barrelled off amphibious trucks and onto the sandy shore, practicing for landings in Europe. Photos from 1943 (and perhaps 1942) in the City of Vancouver archives show the charge, along with radio operators and large anti-

aircraft guns on the popular beach. At the scene were at least a couple of photographers, and they snapped pics of the sights as the troops charged off the vehicles and took positions on the beach. These include shots of radio operators and artillery.

Today, that all seems a bit unlikely (although perhaps a film set will create a similar vibe), but in wartime Vancouver it was part of life as people prepared for what was to come. The locally-based Seaforth Highlanders, who may be the

group in the photos, would go on to participate in Operation Husky. Those were the landings on the Italian island of Sicily in 1943, as the Allies began to invade Axiscontrolled lands. By Brendan Kergin

local company specializing in educating people in the growing world of digital marketing is working to launch the careers of dozens of Indigenous people. At the beginning of the fall semester 45 seats with scholarships for Indigenous students were made available at Jelly Academy, based in Fort Langley; this was due in

part to education being a common barrier for Indigenous students entering the workforce, says the company. “As an educator and leader with Indigenous roots myself, it’s always been of great importance for us to give back and support others to assist with jobs, opening doors and the growth of other Indigenous businesses,” says Jelly's founder Darian Kovacs, who has Metis

heritage. Students were taught skills around SEO, social media, Google Analytics, and advertising on different platforms. "Within a field such as marketing, it is about the power of voices and stories, which means all voices should be heard and have space," states the company in a press release. "Through these scholarships, the goal is to ensure more Indigenous voices are

being heard within the industry." Agencies like SearchKings, based in Ontario, need employees with these skills, with plans to hire 23 in the next few months. "This is exactly what the industry needs - more digital marketing skilled workers," says the company's president, Darryl Margaux. Indigenous graduates from the program are also getting some hardware provided by Best Buy.

5 tips for holiday shopping to overcome supply chain holdups Discover more holiday shopping guides and tips at vancouverisawesome.com/endorsed

Y

our cup of coffee or your child’s favourite toy could end up costing you a pretty penny. This year, a global shipping container shortage has seen the average cost to move a 40-foot steel container of cargo by sea rise by upwards of 500% above the seasonal average, according to Drewry Shipping. The long-lasting impact could mean we see price increases in many common household goods, including appliances, furniture, toys and more. Then came an atmospheric river event in B.C. on Nov. 15 that wiped out large sections of the province’s highway infrastructure, largely cutting off the Interior and the Lower Mainland. With both those issues in mind, here are five tips on how to shop this holiday season so that your packages don’t get hung up by the supply chain.

#1: SHOP LOCAL The best way to ensure you get the goods in hand and support your local small business owners and vendors is to shop in person. Check out their websites and social media feeds for products they carry. You can also call to make sure the item is in stock. #2: ORDER ONLINE, PICK UP IN-STORE Shopping online and picking up instore or curbside is now commonplace for many businesses, including local independent retailers to big box stores like Best Buy and Canadian Tire. #3: FIND LOCAL ARTISANS i.e. Etsy is the go-to online destination for handmade goods, but did you know you can filter your results for local Canadian artisans? Type an item into the search bar (ie: “party decora-

tions”) and from there click “All filters” and set the shop location to Canada. #4: PRIORITIZE YOUR SHOPPING LIST Start with the most in-demand stuff first: tech and toys always fly off the shelves. Shop early and always triple-check delivery options and estimated dates for your area. #5: DEDICATED CANADIAN SHIPPING Current road conditions aside, ordering goods that don’t cross a border is a smoother process than international shopping (no duty and fewer delays). Have your heart sent on a gift that you can’t find in Canada? Before caving into a pricey and lengthy international shipment, check the manufacturer’s site to see if they

list stockists and retailers who carry their goods. Whenever possible, choosing a Canadian retailer—whether they be big or small—will mean a smoother shipment. Keep in mind that some U.S. big box retailers, such as Zara and the Gap, also have warehouses within Canada. If you’re purchasing through Amazon, a Prime subscription offsets shipping costs and speeds up the process, too. Keep an eye out for items labelled “sold and shipped by Amazon” as those tend to move quickly from hubs nearby compared to items shipped directly from Amazon’s third-party retailers. Swiss comfort eats on offer at new Vancouver restaurant

LINDSAY WILLIAM-ROSS

A

h, fondue. Bubbling, gooey cheese and a platter of bread, veggies, and meat make for a beautiful pairing, and Vancouver now has a spot where you can dive into the comforting dish, along with other Swiss fare. Röosh, located in the heart of Gastown, opened its doors earlier this month, after an impressively brief turnover of the space that had been Peckinpah for many years, then Country Roads BBQ for a short stint this year. The owners had been looking to open up a restaurant focused on European-style comfort food and landed on the concept of Swiss rösti, a shredded potato pancake served in a skillet and loaded with toppings. With a French-trained chef on board, the Röosh team created a tight menu featuring several options of rösti, cheese fondue, pretzels, and light add-ons and sides like a simple salad or a sous vide (gently poached) egg to amp up any dish. The rosti at Röosh are all served in a skillet, and come topped with things like smoked salmon and dill creme fraiche (the Salmon and Dillfunkel) or with huge cranberrysage turkey meatballs and herbed gravy and crispy Brussels sprouts

(called Don't Go Cold...Turkey) that really captures favourite fall and winter flavours like a holiday feast. A more lux option is the potato pancake skillet that comes with a poached lobster tail, while a vegetarian option is all about those King Oyster mushrooms. Fret not you can absolutely get a plain rösti, too, no adornments. For a truly epic splurge, the "All-In" rösti - which is actually a couple of the potato pancakes - is piled with everything but the kitchen sink:

JAMES BOYLE REALTOR REMAX HALL OF FAME

spicy chorizo, mushrooms, lobster tails, and turkey meatballs. Röosh recently expanded its hours to feature weekend brunch service, albeit with the same core menu. That makes the addition of the poached egg and Hollandaise the perfect weekend midday meal ideal. Fondue is available in two sizes, with your choice of veggies or chorizo plus bread and pickles for dipping. Other bites on the menu include soft garlic butter pretzels, and salted waffle fries with dill

creme fraiche for dipping. The restaurant is working with Vancouver's esteemed Swiss Bakery for its desserts, which means items like a sticky, nutty apple strudel served with house-made creme anglaise. When it comes to beverages, Röosh is proud to work with local and B.C. suppliers for its cocktail and wine lists. Röosh is located at 2 Water St in Vancouver. By Lindsay William-Ross

Saturday, December 4th 10:00am – 4:00pm ADVERTISING POLICIES

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

All advertising published in this newspaper is accepted on the premise that the merchandise and services offered are accurately described and willingly sold to buyers at the advertised prices. Advertisers are aware of these conditions. Advertising that does not conform to these standards or that is deceptive or misleading, is never knowingly accepted. If any reader encounters non-compliance with these standards we ask that you inform the Publisher of this newspaper and The Advertising Standards Council of B.C. OMISSION AND ERROR: The publishers do not guarantee the insertion of a particular advertisement on a specified date, or at all, although every effort will be made to meet the wishes of the advertisers. Further, the publishers do not accept liability for any loss of damage caused by an error or inaccuracy in the printing of an advertisement beyond the amount paid for the space actually occupied by the portion of the advertisement in which the error occurred. Any corrections of changes will be made in the next available issue. Vancouver Is Awesome will be responsible for only one incorrect insertion with liability limited to that portion of the advertisement affected by the error. Request for adjustments or corrections on charges must be made within 30 days of the ad’s expiration. For best results please check your ad for accuracy the first day it appears. Refunds made only after 7 business days notice!
