It is long past time for more diversity in NHL management “I’m looking for different voices.”
DAVID LEYES
T
hat was the Vancouver Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford this past week, saying he wants to build a front office that has both a diversity of opinion and a diversity of backgrounds. According to Gary Mason of the Globe and Mail, the Canucks are looking to hire a woman at the managerial level, possibly as an assistant general manager, with Mason reporting three former Olympians are potentially in the running: Angela Ruggiero, Jayna Hefford, and Jennifer Botterill. If the Canucks do hire a woman, it will be a long time coming. They wouldn’t be the first woman assistant GM in the NHL but they would be the second — the last woman to hold the job was Angela Gorgone over 20 years ago. No NHL team has ever hired a woman as a general manager. Some might protest that they don’t care about anyone’s gender; they just want someone who is able to do the job. Unfortunately, “is able to do the job” often gets defined in the NHL as “has done the job before.” When Rutherford talked about hiring a new Canucks GM, for instance, he said he compiled a list of 40 candidates sorted into two categories. “One category is of guys that have already been GMs and are no longer with their team,” said Rutherford. “The other group
is a lot of assistant general managers that would be entry-level GMs that I could mentor and work with, which I really enjoy.” When a team limits their search to those who already have their foot in the door, they are excluding qualified candidates for whom the door has never been cracked open. Since no women have ever been NHL GMs and there are no women currently in assistant GM roles, there won’t be any women on Rutherford’s list.
To Rutherford’s credit, he’s evidently looking to break the cycle or, at the very least, disrupt it ever so slightly. “I know our society is changing all the time and I would like to see a more diverse staff, if possible,” said Rutherford at his introductory press conference. “Now, that's easy for me to sit here and say — you really have to search for that, for people that want to do it and are capable of doing it.” Ruggiero, Hefford, and Botterill all seem
more than capable of doing the job and are arguably far more qualified than many of the members of the old boy’s club currently cycling through management positions in the NHL. Ruggiero is the CEO of the Sports Innovation Lab, graduated cum laude from Harvard and has a master’s degree in Sport Management. Hefford has experience as commissioner of the CWHL and chair of the Professional Women’s Hockey Player Association. Botterill graduated with Honors from Harvard in Psychology and has proven her breadth and depth of knowledge live on the air with her intermission analysis on Hockey Night in Canada and Sportsnet. But management has never been a meritocracy in the NHL. If it was, women would already be in front offices across the NHL. And women are only a piece of the intersectional puzzle. There has never been a BIPOC general manager in the NHL either and, when the Florida Panthers hired Brett Peterson last year, he became the first Black assistant general manager in NHL history. If the Canucks hire one — or more — of Ruggiero, Hefford, and Botterill, they won’t just be taking a step towards rectifying a major issue in the NHL; they’ll also be getting an immensely qualified person in a key role to define the future of the franchise. Serial B.C. poacher gets crabs and nets jail time

G
abriola Island resident Scott Stanley Steer has found himself in hot water after catching crabs illegally and leading police on a high-speed chase through Vancouver's harbour. In a ruling dated Nov. 12, 2021, B.C. Supreme Court judge Justice Edelmann notes that Steer, who previously had a career as a fisherman, has a history of poaching, as well as cheating and defrauding employers due to "moral bankruptcy," according to previous rulings by other judges. Thirty-eight-year-old Steer has served multiple stretches in jail for fishing-related infractions since 2013, and the ruling
outlines his long history as a "cheat." In this latest case, the facts show that the serial poacher led fisheries officers on a late-night, high-speed chase on March 2, 2020. The vessel he was driving had no navigational lights visible and according to the Crown he engaged in "evasive manoeuvres, including hairpin turns" and had "near collisions" in the chase through the harbour. Steer was ultimately arrested after the chase, and was found to be in possession of more than 250 crabs which he and two accomplices had poached. At the time of his arrest he did not have
a license to fish, was prohibited from even being on board a boat due to one of many previous rulings against him, and was contravening the Fisheries Act as crab fishing was not permitted at the time even for those in possession of a license - and a moral compass. Judge Edelmann sentenced Steer to six months in jail and a three-year probation order. He was also handed a "lifetime fishing prohibition and a prohibition from being on any fishing vessel," for the rest of his life. The fate of the crabs was not made apparent in the ruling.

Park Board unveils 'Barge Chilling Beach' sign
A
full month after its arrival, the English Bay barge has received its very own Vancouver Park Board sign. Judging by an English Bay live stream on YouTube, the "Barge Chilling Beach" sign was erected by Vancouver Park Board staff the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 15. The date marks a significant anniversary for the beached wood chip barge as it was 30 days ago today a severe wind and rainstorm caused it to break loose from its moorings and wash ashore. A photo of the sign was shared by the Park Board on social media along with a holiday message for the city. "Our little holiday gift to you, Vancouver. No matter what storms life may send our way, we’ll always be here for you. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday and a prosperous 2022!" the Park Board's statement reads. The barge's own social media presence @ EnglishBayBarge shared an image of the sign declaring "Victory."

and get the jab. But officers from RCMP detachments all across B.C. are currently placed on unpaid leave as a result of their refu f sal to vaccinate. The anti-vaccination rhetoric is relatively simple: “forcing” a person to be vaccinated violates their Chart rter right to life, libert rty t , and security t And while of the person. An we can all quibble about whether someone who voluntarily chooses not to be vaccinated and is placed on leave from their employment instead of being fired is actu t ally forcing someone, there is a significant flaw in
the logic of the officers who espouse this view. Chart rter rights can be violated. The police kn k ow this. They kn k ow this because they violate Chart r er rights routinely. It’s just that those violations are “saved” under Section 1 of the Chart r er. This section allows infringement of the rights in a manner that is justifiable in a free and democratic society t … you kn k ow, like in a pandemic, to protect health and safety t. There’s a hilarious irony here. The view that these police officers have that their
Chart r er rights are being violated by an infringement that has already been shown to be justified under Section 1 is completely opposite their views about any other Chart r er infringing conduct police routinely engage in. Now, I’ve never met a police officer who refu f ses to part rticipate in impaired driving enforcement. I’ve never met a police officer who will not - if directed to do so - stand at a roadblock and randomly stop drivers to screen for sobriety t. No officer would say “I don’t do impaired driving enforcement because the law
has found that it violates Charter rights.” And it’s true. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that random traffic stops and roadblocks violate your rights. But the violation is justified because, you know, impaired driving kills people and so health and safety win. Kind of like how COVID kills people. Even roadside sobriety tests, like the kind police administer in roadblocks all over B.C. this holiday season, have been repeatedly found by the Supreme Court rt of Canada to violate the Chart rter. But again, that infringement has been justified because nobody wants other people to die because of one person’s selfish decision to put others at risk. Sound familiar? The reliance on the Chart r er to claim that vaccine mandates for federal employment by the RCMP infringe rights is pretty t rich. Apparently, to these officers, Chart r er rights only matter when the infringement affects them, but not when it affects the people they’re dealing with. Kyla Lee is a Vancouver-based criminal lawyer

The comments were condemned by the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice. At the time a representative told the CBC that his comments stoked anti-Chinese sentiments and that “This is so irresponsible and just so, so, so, so racist.” In a prepared apology, Adams claimed veganism was to blame, not racism. ”Apologies to any and all that took offence to my posting yesterday. No excuse, I just wanted to have a rant about the horrible animal cruelty in these wet-markets being the possible source of the virus, and promote veganism,” he said. n light of new coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions Canadian rocker Bryan Adams has cancelled his New Year's Eve party at Rogers Arena. The highly anticipated show was announced back in October and would have seen Adams performing alongside the musical talents of B.C. bands Mother Mother and 54-40. Adams announced on Friday, Dec. 17 that it would not go ahead. "Due to the continuing onset of the Omicron virus, the Provincial Government has limited attendance of all events & cancelled New Year’s Eve events, which means that the New Year’s Eve concert starring Bryan Adams is cancelled," a post to the musician's Twitter account reads. This isn’t the first time Adams has made the news due to COVID-19 and a show being cancelled. In May of 2020 the musician made national headlines when he derided what he called

Veterans hangout re-launching as modern pub

Vancouver social club with an incredible backstory is about to start a fresh chapter as a neighbourhood pub. Known to most as the Taurus Club, the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans Taurus Unit 298 has been a hangout for cops and veterans - but also local artists and visitors - for decades. Now it's set to welcome even more locals in its next chapter as Hero's Welcome. Located at 23rd and Main, the Taurus social club opened in 1948 after then-VPD officer
Roy Slattery, a Royal Canadian Air Force veteran, had an idea to set up a gathering spot for officers discharged from the military after the Second World War. The required funding to purchase the land and build the club was raised through dues paid by VPD officers. Until recently, the building served as a meeting spot for veterans and police, with the most popular day of the year being Remembrance Day. The Taurus Club closed in 2019, but is now in the hands of another kind of set of veterans
- ones from Vancouver's restaurant and pub industry. Now at the helm are Patryk Drozd, and Simon Fallick. Together the two co-own The American Bar while Drozd also co-owns The Boxcar. The Taurus Club's connection to the art scene remains strong; Fallick co-owns the studio and events space The Ellis Building. Drozd and Fallick are longtime patrons of The Taurus Club themselves, and have been CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

busy of late transforming the venue into Hero's Welcome, with its 150 seats boasting a pub area, games room (pool, pinball, darts, skeeball, and foosball), and a private room for events. Hero’s Welcome aims to usher the club into a new era, while preserving the spirit of the original space by incorporating familiar memorabilia and traditions, such as asking patrons to remove their hats upon entry. In addition, Hero's Welcome will work to raise funds for local veterans' causes and have partnered with Phillips Brewing to donate fifty cents from each sale of their house Hero’s Lager. Speaking of brews, there will be plenty on tap at Hero's Welcome, along with eats like a line of - fittingly - hero sandwiches. The doors to Hero's Welcome will open officially on Dec. 27, though the new pub may be able to welcome guests during a soft open phase ahead of opening day. To start, Hero's Welcome will operate daily from 4 p.m. to late; expanded hours will likely come into play this spring. Hero's Welcome is located at 3917 Main St in Vancouver. Meet Zen the dog, provider of mental health support for Vancouver police officers
F
irst off, he is not your average police dog. He doesn’t chase bad guys. He doesn’t sniff out drugs, or explosives. What Zen the 70-pound mix of Labrador and golden retriever does is unique to policing in B.C.: he provides comfort to Vancouver police officers involved in a traumatic event and those who continue to live with the toll of being a witness to tragedy. Homicides, suicides and serious traffic accidents are common in the city. Veteran constables Andrea Sherry and Jordan Lennox can attest to the indelible impact such distressing events have on an officer’s well-being. Sherry has worked in the sex crimes and child abuse unit. Lennox spent time on an emergency response team and in the gang-crime squad. Both now work in patrol and were sitting in the media room at the police department's Cambie Street precinct. Zen was at their feet as they spoke on a recent Thursday morning. “Just having him there automatically relaxes you after a traumatic event,” said Sherry, noting Zen’s presence drops her blood pressure. “Everybody can sort of relax for a second and breathe and say hello to the dog. It takes the edge off having to then talk about something that's been a terrible thing happening in patrol.” Lennox offered similar insight into Zen’s effect on him and his colleagues, acknowledging that officers by nature can
be more protective of their thoughts and unwilling to share their feelings about a rough day on the job. “Having the dog there is that mood changer, that conduit, that little introduction to start bringing us down and preparing us as police officers to then get into the nuts and bolts of discussing the trauma itself,” Lennox said. It is an understood requirement of the job for officers to attend what is called a critical incident stress management debriefing or "defusing" after a traumatic event. Officers will learn coping skills, have access to mental health professionals, a peer-support group and an athletic coordinator. That’s where Zen and his handler, Const. Michele McKnight, are most present. McKnight is the coordinator of the debriefings and works out of the department’s employee wellness unit, where she is trained
to help colleagues manage what may be strong emotional reactions to an event. The veteran officer became Zen’s handler after the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) donated the three-year-old dog to the department in July. PADS trained Zen to exhibit calmness and be present for officers to pet or play with, or rest at their feet. He’s a regular at the debriefings, but McKnight also makes rounds with Zen of the various units in the department’s two main buildings on Cambie and Graveley streets. The pair will occasionally show up at a courthouse to be with officers before they
testify in a case. Zen’s arrival to the department this summer was two years in the making, with McKnight first writing a report on the need for such a dog. Funds were secured from the Vancouver Police Foundation for Zen’s food and health care. A car was also provided. Read more about Zen by scanning the QR code here. By Mike Howell

'Christmas miracle' on Grouse reunites beloved lost dog with owners
GROUSE MOUNTAIN RESORT
A
beloved dog that was missing for two weeks in the North Shore mountains has been reunited with her overjoyed owners – thanks to an observant ski operations team at Grouse Mountain Resort, a ride on a snow cat and a little help from a reindeer leash. Luna, a three-year-old Jindo rescue dog from Korea, had only joined her North Vancouver family of Bianca Camacho and Kyle Silva in July. As a rescue dog, Luna was somewhat timid and was still learning to socialize and trust her new family when she took off on a walk and went missing on Nov. 29. Camacho said she had Luna out on her usual evening walk that night near Sixth and St. Georges when she accidentally dropped Luna’s leash. “That spooked her,” said Camacho. “She took off running down the street.” Camacho last saw Luna taking off into the trails near Sutherland Secondary at 11 p.m. that night. “That was 15 days ago.” Camacho and her partner immediately began searching for Luna, combing local trails and connecting with local dog walkers, mountain bikers and launching a campaign on social media to help
lead to any sightings. Their search campaign garnered incredible community support and reports of a couple of sightings in Lynn Valley, said Camacho, but did not lead to finding Luna. The couple were so busy searching that they hadn’t got a Christmas tree or done any holiday preparations. Then on Tuesday of last week, a bit of a Christmas miracle unfolded on Grouse Mountain. A team from the resort was working near the Olympic Express Chairlift around 8 a.m. when “they saw paw prints in the snow,” said Melissa Taylor, spokesperson for the resort.
The workers followed the trail of paw prints to where they seemed to lead – underneath the load platform for the chairlift. When Grouse operations manager Kevin Smith saw Luna there, he realized she matched the photos of the lost dog that had been circulating on social media. One of the workers, Gordon McNaughton, was able to crawl under the platform to reach the frightened dog, luring her out with a samosa. He took off his sweater to keep the dog warm. Luna then got a ride on a snow cat down to one of Grouse’s cabins before she was transferred to a travel kennel for the gondola ride down the mountain.
Employees also fashioned a leash for the pooch, from a lead usually used to help guide reindeer at the resort’s Peak of Christmas experience. Camacho said she was at work at a dentist’s office Tuesday morning when she got the message from Grouse, with a photo of Luna attached. “I started shaking and crying,” she said. “I was so happy.” Camacho said her boss drove her to the base of the mountain, where she met with Silva and awaited Luna’s arrival via Skyride. When they saw her for the first time, “We cried our eyes out,” she said. “It
was truly a Christmas miracle.” So far it's a mystery how Luna made it all the way from lower Lonsdale to the snowy top of Grouse Mountain. Luna will be heading to the vet for a checkup on Wednesday. And while she’s starting off on small amounts of pet food, no one will be surprised if Santa soon brings some dog treats around. “She is what we wished for for Christmas,” said Camacho. “Now we finally have her back she’s definitely going to get spoiled.” By Jane Seyd

'Beliebe the hype': Michael Bublé tries Timbiebs in hilarious TikTok
H
aving been brought out from hibernation for the holiday season, Vancouver's own Christmas crooner recently became a Timbiebs belieber. In a recent TikTok, Michael Bublé announced that now he is in Vancouver for the holidays there was just something he had to do. That "something" was getting on a small tri-wheeled scooter and scooting his way over to the nearest Tim Hortons. Once there, he ever so Canadian-ly asked for a big box of Timbiebs, the product of a recent collaboration between the Canadian pop star Justin Beiber and the restaurant chain that comprises one of Canada's major food groups.
MICHAEL BUBLÉ/TIKTOK
All my clients, colleagues and friends Wishing you every happiness over the holidays and throughout the New Year Your loyalty and support throughout the years is very much appreciated.
The biggest box Bublé bought was the same size every Timbit and Bieber fan receives, a box of 10 including the three different flavours: Birthday Cake Waffle, Chocolate White Fudge, Sour Cream Chocolate Chip. Bublé tucked into his box of Timbiebs sitting on the ground outside a car wash and immediately unleashed a flurry of near-incoherent exclamations. Vancouver Is Awesome's Fast Food Panel on the other hand didn't share exactly the same reaction. Bublé had commented on Timbiebs on his TikTok once before, asking if anyone at Tim Hortons would consider another Canadian pop-star team-up. By Cameron Thomson
