About those car sculptures parked around Vancouver
serving to help with traffic calming along Prior St in front of Strathcona Park, but have since been relocated a couple of blocks to the north. Why do they even exist, you ask? As explained in their brochure, they're supposed to make you stop and think; "Cars are a paradox of convenience and inconvenience, and carry the concepts of autonomy and individual freedom. Park plays with what the streets permit, provoking a consideration of the short history of our attachment to the automobile and a reconsideration of its future." Now you know. By Bob Kronbauer

ave you ever seen the thing pictured here and wondered what the heck it even is? If the answer is yes, you're not alone. It's art, of course. Unveiled, as it were, in 2008, there are actually two of them. They were commissioned by the City of Vancouver's Public Art Program, and the budget was $180,000 each. They're the work of artist Marko Simcic, and their title is Park. Constructed of stainless steel and a chassis, they took years to construct. The works are occasionally towed to new locations around the city where they're parked in public spaces. They had recently become more functional,

f you read our recent story about a $250,000 real estate listing for an A-frame cabin in northern B.C., you may have found the Easter egg in it - a photo of some cannabis plants growing in the greenhouse on the 1.12-acre property. Nestled among what look to be tomato plants are two very healthylooking plants which appear to be in the vegetative phase, not yet producing that infamous B.C. bud that we're known for growing here. The property is located in a rural area on Stuart Lake, outside the small town of Fort St. James. With not many other people living nearby, if there's anywhere that the neighbour kids are unlikely to steal your perfectly legal crop, it's here. And if there's any province in Canada

B.C. electricity demand hits an all-time high

C Hydro says the province set a new record for peak electricity demand as temperatures hit extreme lows. Between 5 and 6 p.m. on Dec. 27, demand for electricity hit an all-time high of 10,902 megawatts, which is higher than the previous record of 10,577 megawatts set in 2020. “The record represents a single moment in the hour when demand for electricity was the highest yesterday,” says Simi Heer, BC Hydro spokesperson, in a statement. “Most of the increase is likely due to additional home heating required during this cold snap.” In addition to the peak demand record,

BC Hydro has observed on an overall increase in electricity demand since the previous Friday. The Dec. 27 hourly peak demand was 18 per cent higher than Friday’s. “BC Hydro has enough supply options in place to meet increasing electricity demand,” adds Heer. “However, if British Columbians want to help ease some of the demand on the system during peak times, we encourage shifting activities like doing laundry or running dishwashers to earlier in the day or later in the evening.” BC Hydro is also offering energy conservation tips for people looking to lower their electricity use and their electricity bills:
Manage your home heating actively by turning the heat down when no one his home or when everyone is sleeping. Consider installing a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust temperatures at different times based on your family's activities. BC Hydro recommends the following temperatures:
• 16 degrees Celsius when sleeping or away from home • 21 degrees Celsius when relaxing, watching TV • 18 degrees Celsius when doing housework or cleaning By Colin Dacre

Vancouver WAS Awesome Inside the Vancouver Archives: When you could use a 'give-and-take' laundry service
This photograph from around 1945 shows the packaging of freshly laundered clothing at Nelsons Laundries Ltd. These packages were likely destined for the company’s “give-and-take” service where a driver would exchange parcels of freshly laundered items for a bundle of dirty laundry from subscribing households. Nelsons Laundries Ltd. was established in 1931 by Nels Nelson, a man who was involved with a variety of enterprises including brewing and farming. Around 1931 the company took over the Mission-style building located on the corner of 7th Avenue and Cambie Street where the Metropolitan Laundry and Dry Cleaners Ltd. had been operating for the previous three years. In 1939, Nelson sold the business to A.B. Christopher and his associates. During the 1950s and into the 1960s, Nelson Laundries Ltd. purchased other laundry businesses, including Pioneer Laundry, becoming the largest cleaning company in the Lower Mainland. In 1964, it moved from Cambie Street to Pioneer Laundry’s old location at 5 West 4th Avenue. Four years later, Nelsons was bought by Steiner Canada Ltd., and became a part of Steiner American Corporation (Alsco), which still operates out of the same West 4th Avenue site. I am double vaccinated and tested positive for COVID-19
A
fter a year of surp r rises and unprecedented challenges, I am not sure why I thought my COVID-19 test would be any different. To say I was ready or prepared for my test result to come back positive would be an understatement. It happened so quickly and I am thankful to be vaccinated and healthy. It all started on Dec. 13. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling out of sorts. By 6 a.m., I felt intense body aches and had a pounding headache. I shrugged it off at first as just a bad sleep. I also had a hard workout the day before. But as the day continued and the pain didn’t subside, I worried I might have contracted the virus. I keep my contacts small, always wash my hands, wear a mask and follow the pandemic orders. The symptoms I experienced in those 24 hours felt mild compared to my symptoms after getting my two COVID-19 vaccines earlier this year (AstraZeneca and Pfizer). I broke my fever in my sleep the night of Dec. 14 and woke up feeling “normal.” My gargle test was scheduled the following day in Victoria. Because I was feeling “normal,” I felt some reassurance that maybe I didn't have the virus. Then at 6:02 p.m. I received an automated message from the BC Centre for Disease Control that my COVID-19 test result was positive and to self-isolate immediately. Frantically, I started cancelling holiday plans. I called all my close contacts and felt immense fear that I could have spread the virus unknowingly to someone close to me. Over the next few days, my symptoms remained mild: I had a headache every day and was tired. Roughly after five days of the virus, I lost my sense of taste. Since then, I don’t appear to have any long-term symptoms, but my taste has not come back fully. It took public health three days to contact me; once they did, we determined there was no way of knowing where or how I got the virus. I then learned that contact tracing was to be conducted by me and that I had to alert everyone. All of my close contacts tested negative. The next step was figuring out how long I needed to isolate for. Two nurses told me over the phone that because I was double vaccinated and had mild symptoms, I only needed to isolate for seven days. People who are not vaccinated or are immune-compromised are supposed to isolate for 10 days. Following up on this information, Glacier Media contacted the Ministry of Health and was told the different isolation timelines reflect emerging information on how COVID-19 and its variants behave. "We have learnt that people who are double vaccinated tend to shed [the] virus for a shorter duration of time,” says a spokesperson. "In a vaccinated person, by seven days after symptom onset, they are very unlikely to transmit infection." In contrast, people who are not vaccinated shed the virus for about 10 days after symptoms start. "Omicron has been found to spread more easily between people than previous COVID-19 variants. People can spread Omicron to others even if they have been vaccinated,” says the spokesperson. "Current vaccines provide good protection against severe illness and hospitalizations for Omicron." Meanwhile, the two public health nurses told me I would not be able to get a PCR test once my isolation period finished. Ministry of Health staff echo this and tell Glacier Media that
people can continue to test positive for weeks. Ministry r staff say PCR tests will remain positive for 20 days or more, so testing by PCR in a public setting is not helpfu f l. "Theoretically, this might imply that dead viru rus can be transmitted but it is unclear if this is protective,” says a spokesperson. "The best protection is to be vaccinated.” Out of an abundance of caution for those closest to me, including an immune-compromised person, I purchased a box of rapid tests online to see if I would continue testing positive. Thankfully, my results came back negative. One scroll through social media tells the story of many people coping with COVID-19. I hope my story finds you healthy and safe. By Alanna Kelly

Resident of SRO owned by notorious slumlords speaks out after spending holiday without heat
T
he worst Christmas as I've had in 36 years,” says David Brabner, a resident of the Regal Hotel on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, who says he spent the holiday freezing in his room after the heat went out on Christmas Eve. Owned by the notorious Sahota family, the Regal is a single-roomoccupancy building located at 1046 Granville Street that came under fire this year for being in an ”unsafe condition." A report that went before city council stated that it represented “an ongoing risk to the life safety of the residents of the building.” Brabner, 36, told Vancouver Is Awesome in a phone interview on Dec. 29 that he moved into the building in July 2021 but hopes to find other accommodation as soon as possible. "Today alone the power has blown three times," he said. "It was off for about a half-an-hour each time." While the heat was back on Boxing Day, Brabner notes that he never feels warm in his room. For one, he says the window in his room has never been fixed, so cold air is always blowing in. "I'm paying like almost $700 a month to live in a cockr k oachinfested hellhole where the sink never works. There's one shower worki k ng in the whole building. "It is just disgu g sting... this place should be condemned."
+
DAVID BRABNER
“
Brabner added that there are mice in his unit, rats on the stairs, and his girlfriend has been bitten, although she doesn't know what bit her. Over Christmas, Brabner slept with "three jackets on under two sleeping bags" and was "still shivering." Now, he says he has a sore throat and other tenants have complained of new coughs. The City t of Vancouver tells V.I.A. in an emailed statement that staff visited the Regal Hotel on Monday Dec. 27 and that the building was getting warmer when they visited. "We were informed that additional work is happening on the heating system this morning,

and are following up today to ensure that work is completed and ffull heating has been restored," reads the statement. The city t also stated that staff monitor SRO buildings "closely
and facilitate compliance" through inspections and by responding to complaints. Enforcement action is taken if a violation is noted during an inspection.

The city t says it became aware of the heat issue on Dec. 17 and immediately took action. "Our understanding is there was an issue earlier over the holidays which building management attempted to resolve, but the problem had reoccurred." The city’s rental property standards database, which lists previous and current violations, shows the Regal has records dating back to April 2014 for contravening one or more bylaws related to building, fire and standards of maintenance. Problems included issues with fire alarms, fire exit doors, fire extinguishers, fire connection, housekeeping, plumbing and “lodging house room number and records.” The database indicates 46 “completed issues” and five “current issues.” The Sahotas will be familiar to readers who followed the city’s fight to expropriate and eventually buy the Balmoral and Regent hotels on East Hastings, near Main Street. The Balmoral has been vacant since June 20177 and the Reg gent since June 2018. Both hotels have at leas ast 150 rooms. The city t closed both buildings because they were deemed unsafe to occupy. Vancouver Is Awesome made several attempts to reach members of the Sahota family on Wednesday. By Elana Shepert with files from Mike Howell.

Trump name removed from Police seize 150,000 downtown Vancouver hotel potentially fatal fentanyl doses

T
he Trump name has officially been removed from its resting place on a statuesque Vancouver hotel for roughly the past four years The sign for the Trump Vancouver tower was unveiled just in time for the inauguration of
the former U.S. president on Jan. 20, 2017. But the unveiling was not welcome news to some Vancouverites. There were multiple protests against the use of Trump’s name on a Vancouver building, with many people citing his racist and hateful remarks. Now, however, the divisive former president's name has been removed from the hotel, which officially closed in August 2020. The Holborn Group is the parent company that owns the former Trump International Hotel. The Trump International Hotel and Tower in Vancouver accounted for almost one-third of police calls to luxury downtown hotels in 2017-18, Vancouver Police Department statistics show. urrey RCM MP recently seized enough fentanyl to kill everyone in a sold-out arena like BC Place three times over. In Septemb ber, the Surrey RCMP Dru rug Unit start r ed an investigation into a dru r g trafficki k ng nettwork in Surrey. On Nov. 25, police executed a search warrant at a residence in the 124 400-block of 99 Avenue, according to a presss release. Police seized $90,0 000 in cash, 225 grams of fentanyl, 16 grams of cocaine, 24 grams of methamphetaminee and 67 fake oxycodone pills. The drugs weere prepackaged for streetlevel sale. Two Surrey men in n their late 20s were arrested and later released pending charge approval. Both men n are known to police and are linked to the Lower Mainland gang conflict. On Dec. 122, a separate investigation
led to a search warrant being executed at a residence in the 7000-block of 150A St. Police seized 1.5 kg of bulk fentanyl, 775 grams of bulk methamphetamine, $60,000 in cash, one assault rifle and one tactical shotgun. The investigation is ongoing to obtain charge approval against one man who has associations with the Lower Mainland gang conflict. “These two seizures are significant, not only because it has disrupted drug trafficking network ties with links to the Lower Mainland gang conflict, but it also lessens the supply of potentially fatal doses of fentanyl off our streets,” says Staff Sgt. Glenn Leeson. Anyone with information about criminal activity in Surrey can help keep the community safe by reporting it to police at 604-599-0502. By Cameron Thomson
