400-year-old book of Shakespeare plays on display

V

ancouveriites know the Bard on the Beach, ancouverites but now th hey can see the Bard on the Table. The UBC C library has been gifted a rare and import rtant book: a first edition version of William Shakespeare’s Comed dies Histories and Tragedies. Printed in 1623, there are only 235 left in the world; this one is only the second d to come to Canada. The book contains 36 6 of the Bard's 38 known plays and was compiled and d edited by Shakespeare's friends, fellow playw y rights an nd actors seven years after he died. It is considered the most authoritative of the early printings of his work. It contains the earliest printings

of plays like The Tempest and Twelfth Night. “The First Folio is a cornerstone of English literature and with this donation, we are able to bring this cultural treasure into public ownership,” says Katherine Kalsbeek, head of the library's rare book collection, in a press release. “Adding a First Folio to the UBC Library collection represents a milestone in terms of our development as both a library and as a university.” As part of UBC's mandate there will be public access to the book. Different departments at the university already are planning a digital project around the book, including a virtual reality version.

ENJOY ALL OF THE

WONDERFUL SOUNDS OF 2022

But before all tthat, hat,, it's on display for the the public to go see. “This is really a gift, not just to UBC, UB BC, but also to the city t of Vancouver and d to the many people in n the region who appreciate ap ppreciate Shakespeare,” says Kalsbeek. “Wee thoughtt it was very app appropriate propriate that we partner partneer with the Vancouverr Art Art Ar Gallery and Ba Bard ard on the Beach to present presentt it to the Vancouver Vanco ouver community be before efore it ultimately co comes omes to UBC to support sup pport rt research and te teaching.” eaching.” Opened on Jan. Jan n. 15, For All Time: The Shakespeare First Folio displays the famous book along with other pieces of Shakespeare's portf tfolio. It'll be there until March 20. “This is something the whole community can get excited about and can rally around: the first prrinting of almost half of Shakespeare’s plays that would have been lost were it not for this book," says Dr. Gregory r Mackie. "It’s important to history, culture, and d literature for so many people." "It’s a tremendous moment for Arts at UBC."" By Brendan Kergin

VPD investigate 'brazen' new scam taking thousands from seniors

V

ancouver police are seeking the public's help in identifying a person of interest in a troublingnew scam that has already victimized multiple senior Vancouver residents. The scam's perpetrators trick seniors into thinking their loved ones have been arrested and convince them to hand over thousands of dollars for legal fees. “It’s not uncommon for scammers to target the elderly by contacting them by mail, telephone, or online,” says constable Tania Visintin, VPD. “What’s different and concerning is that fraudsters are now showing up at the victims’ doorsteps to collect cash. It’s brazen, and we’re concerned about people's safety.” The scam was first reported to the VPD on Jan.12, when a west side couple in their 70s received a call from a man who claimed their nephew had been in a car accident and needed $8,000 to get out of jail. The fraudster then came to the victims’ home and picked up the money.

VPD

A6 VANCOUVER

Later that same day, a 75-year-old Kitsilano resident received a similar call telling her that her grandson had been in a car accident, was in jail, and needed $9,000 for bail. The suspect also came to her residence and the victim handed over the money. “Both cases are now being investigated by VPD’s Financial Crime Unit,” said Visintin, adding it’s unknown if the frauds are being perpetrated by a single suspect or an organized group. “We’re reaching out to other police agencies to determine how far-reaching this scam is. Until we know more, we urge everyone to be cautious about strangers who ask for money,” Visintin continued. Vancouver Police have released a video of one of the interactions and encourage anyone with information to contact investigators at 604-717-0503. By Cameron Thomson

Another upside (or again, downside, depending on your vibe) is that the community is actually a community - a gallery on their website shows members dancing to folk music, working on the gardens together, and living what looks to be close to a commune lifestyle. unique investment opportunity has come up on Galiano Island, an hour by ferry from the Tsawwassen terminal. Agent Hedi Kottner's listing showcases a 2-storey "pole house" which is adjacent to Dionisio Provincial Park on the north end of the Gulf Island. More like a small cottage, the 1-bedroom, 487 sq ft dwelling comes with 14-foot-high windows and a 2,500 sq ft garden plot. It offers an opportunity to "add your finishing elements," as it's not quite completed. The price reflects the fact that it's not a freehold property - it is located on a 160-acre plot owned by Therah, a "village community" founded in 1982. People who buy in are sold shares and allotted pieces of the property to build on, and this is the only share currently available. Therah sees its members as "stewards" of the land, and solicits donations from people who do not own there to become "Friends of Therah." The upside (or the downside, depending on

an’t get enough of the English Bay Barge? Wish you could hold it in the palm of your hand or have it stuck on your desk instead of Sunset Beach? A local 3D print designer might have just the solution for you. The designer, who goes by Calvin, according to their Thingiverse handle, recently posted photos of their printed barge next to the real thing on social media. Calvin commented later they are still looking for information on the barge’s exact model for better measurements. “I had to approximate the dimensions from pictures since I couldn't find a design blueprint or really anything about the barge besides the name of the owner,” they wrote after the initial post. Calvin also included a link to the 3D print files on the Thingiverse website. From there the files can be downloaded for free and so long as you have access to a 3D printer, you can make all the English Bay Barges that time and filament allow. By Cameron Thomson

Bif Naked's unlicensed CBD brand may protect against COVID-19

C

anadian musician and unlicensed-CBD-brand owner Bif Naked may have reason to celebrate as a study out of the University of Waterloo has shown promise that CBD might work to "prime cells against COVID." Naked is co-owner of Mona Lisa Healing, which was selling contraband CBD to Canadians as recently as 2020. The company is not approved as a licensed producer by Health Canada and operates on the fringes, now

shipping to clients internationally. In the early days of the pandemic, the business released marketing materials containing unfounded health claims that their product was able to "help your body defend against COVID-19 Coronavirus." In a March 2020 email, Naked told Vancouver Is Awesome that she didn't believe they needed to adhere to Health Canada's packaging and production regulations for their product which was produced in Canada and

shipped out of Toronto. Naked explained: "Because we are an international distributor, our packaging is consistent with international markets." Mona Lisa Healing stopped distributing their product in Canada after reporting by Vancouver Is Awesome revealed that doing so contravened the Cannabis Act. When asked in 2020 if they were taking advantage of the public's fears during a global health crisis, Naked told V.I.A. she did not believe making an unfounded claim that a product could protect people from COVID-19 would be considered profiteering. Naked noted in mid-March 2020 that it was typical for other "health and wellness companies" such as gyms, vitamin companies, and others who consider themselves "in the health industry" to indicate in marketing materials issued in early spring it was "flu season." The then-new virus was also top of mind for such companies, added Naked. "Yes, absolutely we are all mentioning 'Covid-19' as it is in the forefront of everyone’s mind, as the world (including Mona Lisa subscribers) [are] seeking wellness and to strengthen immune support." Study released on CBD and COVID-19 A study released by the University of Waterloo on Jan. 12, 2022 could be good news for licensed CBD brands and ones who are selling illegally alike. It shows promise for CBD as a preventative measure against COVID-19, indicating that therapeutic doses could possibly aid in "increasing the readiness of cells to respond to viral infection such as SARS-CoV-2." U of W postdoctoral fellow Maria Fernandes performed the study. She's quoted in a press release as saying that the results suggest “CBD at the right dose could help cells be in a better state of readiness to respond to a virus, but it doesn’t cause a response unless there is a need.” The researchers found that "synthetic cannabidiol (CBD) augments the anti-viral response of cells to three key proteins produced by the SARS-CoV-2 genome – which was, until now, an unknown effect." The synthetic CBD used in the study differs from the "hemp-based organic" CBD Mona Lisa Healing claims to use in their products, and a pre-peer-reviewed version has been published on BioRxiv.org. It is currently under review in the journal Life Sciences. Health Canada has not approved, nor does it recommend, CBD as a way to protect yourself from COVID-19. Naked declined to comment on the study and her CBD brand at this time. By Bob Kronbauer

Skin cream, military gun shell casing and $90 necktie among ‘gifts’ to Vancouver council

I

’ve never seen a 105-millimetre M14 shell casing. Had I known one was on display in Mayor Kennedy Stewart’s “ceremonial boardroom” when I did my year-end interview with him in December, I would have taken a look at the big brass cartridge. Not because I’m a military buff, but because it was one of the “gifts” Stewart declared last year in filing a “statement of gift disclosure,” which is a requirement under the city’s code of conduct policy. The mayor and councillors must fill out a form when they receive a “gift or personal benefit” worth $50 or more. Stewart didn’t give a dollar value for the casing, which I believe came out of one of those big guns you see soldiers fire in salutes on Remembrance Day. The casing was given to him by the 15th Field Artillery Regiment RCA, which is based at the Bessborough Armoury on West 11th Avenue. The regiment presented it to Stewart in gratitude for the “freedom of the city” honour in October 2021. So what else did he get? And what about the rest of council? Good questions and ones I posed to the city’s communications department, which packaged up the past two years of disclosures and emailed them to me, which was very much appreciated; I used to have to go up to city hall, flip through a binder and then photocopy each form. Before I get to the councillors, wanted to let you know the mayor also received a Sulwhasoo “essential skin care set” worth $350. The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver gave it to Stewart in September 2020 in recognition of the consulate’s 50th anniversary in the city. The mayor forwarded it to the city clerk’s office. Not sure what happened after that, although the city clerk has the following options when forwarded a gift from an elected official: to return it to the donor, display it in individual offices, general offices, or in the public areas of city hall, dispose of it by donation, sale or auction, with any proceeds credited to the city’s general revenues, or to the direct or indirect support of a

charitable organization. Now to the councillors… • Lisa Dominato declared: a $79 ticket received from Fortis BC for a board of trade event in Surrey in February 2020; a registration fee worth $400 from the Pooni Group to attend a Vancouver Canucks Alumni luncheon at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in November 2021; a registration fee worth $89.25 from the Urban Development Institute to attend its holiday reception in December 2021; a registration fee worth $103.95 from Air Canada (sat at the airline’s table) to attend the mayor’s “state of the city” address in November 2021. • Jean Swanson declared: $79.95 worth of beauty/toiletry products from Lush, which was wwgiven to her from the Aboriginal Front Door Society in April 2020; Swanson donated the goods to “a community group.” Swanson also received a registration fee worth $245 from the

More stories on local news at VancouverIsAwesome.com

BC Non-profit Housing Corporation in October 2020 for the BC Housing Central Conference in December of that year. • Christine Boyle declared the same $245 fee for the housing event and accepted five tickets worth $200 in October 2021 from Paquin Entertainment to attend the Imagine Van Gogh Immersive Exhibition at the Vancouver Convention Centre. • Pete Fry declared four Christmas gifts in December 2020: one bottle of wine worth $35 from Hollyburn Properties; a necktie worth $90 from the Royal Thai Consulate General in Vancouver; a bottle of wine worth $30 from the Turkish Consulate in Vancouver; an Ikebana calendar worth $30 from Consulate General of Japan Office. • Rebecca Bligh declared: five complimentary tickets worth $225 from the Paquin Entertainment Group to the Imagine Picasso exhibit at the Vancouver Convention Centre. • Michael Wiebe declared: four tickets to Imagine Picasso worth $39.99 each from Paquin Entertainment Group. You’ll note that not every member of council declared gifts of personal benefits for the past two years, which means Adriane Carr, Melissa De Genova, Colleen Hardwick and Sarah Kirby-Yung either didn’t have anything to report, or they haven’t filed yet. The code of conduct says all gifts or personal benefits worth more than $50 must be filed with the city clerk “as soon as practicable.” Kirby-Yung told me Monday that she had nothing to declare. There was a time when council was given more than skin cream, art show tickets and wine, as I reported way back in 2008. That’s when the Sam Sullivan-led council went on yacht rides to watch the fireworks in English Bay, went to Cirque de Soleil shows and attended Canucks games and a Bruce Springsteen concert in private boxes. Concord Pacific, one of the city’s biggest developers and biggest donors at the time to the campaigns of the NPA and Vision Vancouver, picked up the tab for all of it. By Mike Howell

New all-vegetarian 'express' grocery store opens in historic location Correction Notice

In our weekly flyer dated January 20 to 26, 2022, Whole Pork Leg was incorrectly advertised. The price should have read 0.99/lb. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you.

A

fter launching Larry's Market in 2019 in the Shipyards district in North Vancouver the business has expanded to include a recentlyopened outpost in Vancouver's bustling Chinatown. The vegetarian grocery store is up and running at 291 East Georgia Street in a historic building that dates back over a century and for a long time in more recent memory served as a Chinese grocer. Owner Ryan Dennis brought a quarter-century of grocery expertise to the table when he went into business for himself with a concept that focuses on vegetarian foods and products that align with his own lifestyle.

LOOKING FOR A NEW CAREER IN EDUCATION? Full Time REAP 2022

“I wanted to bring healthy food to a convenience format,” Dennis told the North Shore News in 2019 when Larry's debuted. “The only way we felt we could get that healthy food was through opening up a store that focuses on organic produce and healthy foods that don’t include refined sugars. Basically, everything in our store is organic or local.” In addition to pantry staples and fresh produce, Larry's stocks dairy and plant-based products like oat and nut milks, snacks, meat alternatives, and baked goods. Additionally, the market has an in-house café that serves up its own salads, sandwiches, toasts, pizzas, and much more, and they're known for their signature kombucha slushies. The new Chinatown location is an "express" Larry's Market, but the outpost still offers customers one-hour same-day delivery in the area. Both locations are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
