SUPPORTING CANADIAN HEROES:

SPONSORED CONTENT

HELP HONOUR HOUSE SERVE THOSE WHO SERVE US

Honour House Society relies on the generosity of individuals and corporations to fund support for veterans, first responders and members of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families.

I

n May 2021, Canadian Armed Forces veteran Thomas Pendlebury was diagnosed with Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The 56-year-old father of five underwent stem cell surgery before returning home to his family in Kamloops. Recently, Pendlebury contracted an infection. He, and his wife Natasha Pendlebury, who live on his disability pension, had to move to Vancouver to be near Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), where he is undergoing treatment. “Thomas’ two rounds of chemotherapy medication costs us $7,000,” says Natasha. “Imagine having to pay for medication, and on top of that, having to pay the exorbitant rent in Vancouver. Thanks to Honour House, we don’t have the burden of worrying about paying rent. They provide free room and board in a beautifully restored 1937 home in New Westminster. We can focus on getting Thomas better because of the incredibly compassionate

and caring people at Honour House.” Founded in 2011 by Hon. Col. with the 15th Field Artillery and former Vancouver Park Board Commissioner, Allan De Genova, Honour House is a free 11-room haven for our country’s armed forces, veterans and first responders, who have been injured on duty, have seriously ill children, organ transplants, PTSD and more, helping ease the substantial financial and emotional burdens on families. “We even help with line-of-duty deaths by supporting the families of members who lose their lives while protecting us,” says De Genova. Since its inception, Honour House has provided nearly 12,000 nights of free accommodation for our men and women in uniform, and their families, during some of the most difficult times in their lives. In October 2020, Honour Ranch in Ashcroft opened its doors, specifically to

support first responders, military personnel and veterans who are struggling with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Nestled amongst 120 acres of spectacular beauty, the participants take part in support programs while communing with nature, taking much-needed time out from the everyday stresses of life and connecting with others facing similar issues. Pre-pandemic, Honour House Society hosted star-studded gala fundraisers, with the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Michael Bublé, Blue Rodeo, Jan Arden and others

donating their talents - to help raise the $236,000 needed to keep treating our “heroes” each year. “At Honour House, we have between 75 and 81 volunteers and only one full time, paid staff person, which means 99.9 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to Honour House Society,” says De Genova.

Now more than ever, Canadian heroes - the brave men and women, along with their families, who sacrifice so much to protect our freedom and our way of life each day, need us. This Valentine’s Day, show some love by donating to Honour House and Honour Ranch by visiting www.honourhouse.ca/donate/or by calling 778-397-4399.

This Valentine’s Day, show some love for our unsung heroes. These past two years have been trying on all of us, especially our rst responders and military. From oods to res, throughout the pandemic, our men and women in uniform have been there during our time of need. At Honour House and Honour Ranch we provide a home away from home and a place of recovery for our Canadian Armed Forces, Emergency Services Personnel, Veterans and their families. Supporting the health and wellbeing of our nation’s heroes is your chance to open your heart and give back.

Indigenous women's basketball team fundraising with limited edition ball

+

AMR

D

escribed as one of the backbones of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside community and for women coming off reserves, an Indigenous women's basketball team is featuring a limited edition basketball as part of a new fundraising campaign. As an integral part of many Indigenous communities, basketball has served as a way for people of all generations to gather and connect with each other. All My Relations Indigenous Women's (AMR) basketball team was founded by Joleen Milton over 19 years ago in Vancouver and she says the limited edition basketball is a representation of more than just the love of the game—although the team really loves to play basketball. "Through basketball, we have learned to practice how we want to play, and in our lives, we are the change we want to see in our communities," she explains. "This ball and its design represents that, it’s our journey and our story. "We love this game, and this is our Game Ball!” In partnership with advertising agency The Local Collective, AMR has launched a fundraising campaign that represents "a rich and often overlooked history of basketball in Indigenous communities across Canada." For women who are coming off reserves or

who live in the DTES, the team offers a safe and healthy outlet in the community. The 30 Indigenous women in the AMR community come from various nations and backgrounds and the team consists of twelve women ranging in age from 17 to 40 years. Inspired by their stories and the love of the game, the AMR Game Ball was born. While the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on tournament fundraising, the "drive,

More stories on local news at VancouverIsAwesome.com

determination, and dedication to community" continued to push the team to find new ways to rally support. "We believe the more spaces that are created, nurtured and funded for sport, especially for underrepresented communities, the more we all have to gain from it," says Kaitlin Doherty, Founder & Managing Director, The Local Collective. “Community is so vital right now. We love

what All My Relations stands for and how they build and lift up their communities." Proceeds from the sale of AMR Game Balls (priced at $100 each) go directly to supporting the team as they head to the coveted All Native Tournament this April in Prince Rupert, which is located on the traditional territory of the Ts’msyen. Additionally, funding will go to supporting the AMR Physical Literacy Program, developing programming and clinics, and continuing their advocacy work for representation in sport. Canucks hiring women is taking advantage of a clear market ineffi f ciency

T

he Vancouver Canucks made waves in the hockey world when they hired Émilie Castonguay, making her just the second woman ever to be hired as an assistant general manager in NHL history and the first in 25 years. The hiring came just a few days after the Canucks hired Rachel Doerrie in an analytics role. In the space of one week, the Canucks drastically increased the diversity of their hockey operations department — specifically, they went from zero women to two. Castonguay and Doerrie have more than just gender in common; they also boast extremely impressive resumes. Castonguay played four years in the NCAA for Niagara University, earned her law degree from the University of Montreal, and became the first woman ever to be an NHLPAcertified player agent, representing firstoverall draft pick Alexis Lafrenière, Canadian star Marie-Philip Poulin, and former Canuck Antoine Roussel. Doerrie has worked for the New Jersey Devils as an analyst, as a video coach for the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves, as the director of analytics and advanced performance for York University while completing her Master of Science in Sport Science and Analytics, and was a senior analyst for BMO Financial Group. It’s wrong to say that Castonguay and Doerrie are overqualified. It’s just that they’re actually qualified for the jobs for which they’ve been hired, which stands in stark contrast to so many men that get hired by NHL teams. By opening their hiring practices to more than just the usual white men that get front office roles in the NHL, the Canucks are taking advantage of a massive market inefficiency. The concept is simple. If an NHL team only hires white men, they’re competing with every other NHL team for the best people. By intentionally targeting a different demographic, an NHL team can get the best of the best from that group. That’s definitely Castonguay and Doerrie.

“There are a lot of very good, qualified women around the League, and I talked to a handful. All are very capable of having high positions in the National Hockey League. I was very, very impressed,” said Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford. “[Émilie] has such a good background to take this next step.” NHL teams have primarily hired white men for front office jobs — Castonguay is the only female assistant general manager in the NHL and Brett Peterson with the Florida Panthers is the first and only Black assistant general manager in NHL history. This isn’t necessarily intentional racism or sexism, but racism and sexism don’t have to be intentional to be real. Typically speaking, NHL teams have looked to former players or people who have been around the men’s game for years and had the right connections. It becomes cyclical. When jobs open up, teams frequently hire for those who have done the job before — just look at the Chicago Blackhawks interviewing Peter Chiarelli for their open general manager job, even though Chiarelli did an utterly disastrous job as GM of the Edmonton Oilers. By only looking at a small circle of people for these jobs, so many other qualified and competent people get excluded. Since the NHL is still predominantly populated by white men, the people it excludes are BIPOC and women. Since it’s so easy to unintentionally exclude, it is essential that inclusion be very intentional. That’s why it’s so encouraging to see Rutherford intentionally seeking out and interviewing women for front office roles. “We're doing this for all the right reasons, not just to be trying something new,” said Rutherford. “I’m very proud of the hockey staff we put together. It’s a diverse group, we’re going to have different voices that came up through hockey in different ways. I really like that idea.” By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

Rustic home on the shores of Scum Lake in B.C. listed for sale

A

new recreational property opportunity has come up in a remote location three hours from Williams Lake in Northern B.C. An off-grid home on the shores of the oddly-named Scum Lake has been listed for $395,000. The listing refers to it as a luxury home, which is debatable.

What's not up for debate is the four-acre lot is a stunner, and the off-grid home offers ample room for anyone looking to escape the city. The home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the electrical system is run by solar power with battery and generator backup. Outbuildings include a storage shed, covered parking shed, and pheasant pen. Property taxes in 2021 were a mere $885.95, and the fishing from the shore is apparently great. A

B.C. man who gained over half a million YouTube followers is facing several charges after he allegedly crossed into Banff National Park to hunt, fish and light fires during a 30-day survival challenge. Gregory Ovens is next scheduled to appear in a Calgary court on Feb. 9, 2022. He faces six charges connected to illegal fishing, hunting in a park, discharging a firearm in a park, lighting an illegal fire, and damaging or destroying a natural object. He is also alleged to have breached the Canada National Park Act for flying a drone without a permit, said a spokesperson for Parks Canada. The court appearances come following a joint Parks Canada and BC Conservation Officer Service investigation against Ovens, triggered after a public report in July 2019. Ovens, who lives in the village of Canal Flats near the headwaters of the Columbia River, is alleged to have crossed into Banff National Park during a '30 Day Survival Challenge in the Canadian Rockies' with fellow survivalist Zachary Fowler, an American citizen. Fowler has an outstanding arrest warrant against him for seven related charges. In a series of popular YouTube videos, Ovens and Fowler forage for mushrooms, build a raft, and pan for gold. Most of the videos show the men catching and smoking fish, but by day 30, Ovens is seen roasting a wild gopher in a tree fort several metres off the forest floor. The survival challenge launched Ovens's YouTube channel in 2019, which to date has received over 45 million views. Glacier Media reached out to Ovens and Fowler, but neither was immediately available for comment. Both men previously appeared in the third season of the History Channel reality show Alone. Fowler won the competition after surviving 87 days in the Patagonia wilderness, over which he says he ate 63 fish and two birds. Ovens lasted 51 days before coming down with hypothermia.

Inside the Vancouver Archives: Building a better sewer system to serve the city

T

hree children stand next to the metal rolls of reinforcing material, watching men engrossed in their task in this 1913 photograph. The photograph taken at 11th Avenue and Woodland Drive shows men mixing and pouring concrete into forms, creating pipe segments for the City’s sewerage scheme. The City’s first sewer was built in 1888, two years after Vancouver’s incorporation. However, two and a half decades of population growth combined with lack of standardized design and construction methods of sewers led to typhoid outbreaks, and, in the summer of 1911, beach closures due to pollution. As a way to address the problems, the municipalities of Vancouver, South Vancouver, Point Grey, and Burnaby formed the Burrard Peninsula Joint Sewerage Committee. The Committee hired the Montreal- based sanitary engineer R.S. Lea to study the issue. Lea’s report, submitted in February 1913, laid out the infrastructure framework for sewerage and surface water disposal. The report also projected what the needs of the region might be for the following 37 years. In his letter of transmittal that accompanied the report, Lea praised the municipalities for their “attempt at united action in an undertaking of such magnitude in advance of pressing necessity.”
