Locals buying up military gear to send to Ukraine what it is, of course. Iryna Shyroka, branch president for the Canadian Ukrainian Congress in Vancouver, told V.I.A. that Denis Polishchuk of the Maple Hope Foundation is gathering military supplies from the Metro Vancouver region to offer non-lethal support to Ukraine's defenders. "You can't ship a bulletproof vest through Canada Post," she explains. Instead, the organization is gathering supplies including medical support, body armour, helmets and radio communications and sending them via a base to Ukraine.
Customers have picked up some other military supplies but the lion's share of the purchases have been tactical gear, added Robson. "We just want to help people — that's what it's all about."

Getting military supplies overseas
By Elana Shepert
Locals have also been raising funds for the overseas humanitarian effort and some of them are sending aid in the form of medical and military supplies. Gorilla Surplus on East Broadway has seen a massive spike in sales of tactical gear. In the first few days after Russia invaded Ukraine, manager Mark Robson said he received "non-stop" calls. "We're shipping out thousands of dollars worth of goods a day," he told Vancouver Is Awesome in a phone interview. "It's the same kind of stuff that soldiers would be wearing in the field."

popular Vancouver business is seeing an impressive surge in sales due to local efforts aimed at supporting Ukraine during the Russian invasion. Thousands of people have come together to show solidarity with Ukrainians at rallies across British Columbia over the past couple of weeks. Many of them wore yellow and blue — the colours of the Ukrainian flag — and carried signs in support of the country. Other attendees held signs that admonished Russian President Vladimir Putin or simply the act of war.
If you're hoping to purchase some military gear and ship it overseas to Ukraine, you might encounter some issues. In addition to knowing where to send the parcel, people must also have the appropriate permit for it, depending on

Vancouver brewery releases the dankest beer in history
T
he Strathcona Beer Company has teamed up with popular local bodega Dank Mart to release a beer that can mostly be described as sweet. Real sweet. The release of their Blue Candy Ale was accompanied by a pop-up shop inside the brewery. For the next week, Dank Mart will be selling their exotic snacks at the Strathcona Beer Company's tasting room (895 E Hastings) as part of the collaboration. The beer itself is, as mentioned, sweet. While they describe it as "slightly sweet," the blueberry, peach and raspberry notes are where it begins, and it ends with actual Belgian candy sugar added. It is in fact very sweet, in more ways than one, as it tastes more like a juice than a 5% ABV beer. It's available at the brewery and at select liquor stores across BC, Alberta, and Manitoba. s residents of Vancouver prepare to bid a sad farewell to the English Bay Barge (or gleeful GTFO, depending on your view), an official English Bay Barge website has popped up. Somehow, after all these months, EnglishBayBarge. ca was left open and so the group behind the impending removal of the iconic red wood chip barge (officially called SMT-5000) has built a site to keep the public up-to-date with the barge's deconstruction. "The barge is structurally unsound, cannot be refloated and will be deconstructed on site," states a message on the website. "Preparation for the deconstruction is complex and involves consultation with multiple stakeholders and subject matter experts.
Planning is underway and includes safety, security, habitat and environmental protections and assessments." It'll be removed by local company Vancouver Pile Driving, which is working with a variety of government agencies like the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and Coast Guard along with Sentry Marine Towing's representatives. Locals will actually be able to buy a piece, though most of the barge will be hauled to a scrap heap in the US. The website will provide updates about progress and plans, once those are in place, but as of March 16 they're still being made. The plan to cut up and haul the barge away piece-by-piece was announced Feb. 6. By Brendan Kergin

North Shore vintage-inspired t-shirt store launches online
O
ur sister publication the North Shore News has launched an online store where they're selling vintage-inspired t-shirts which throw it back to earlier decades on the other side of the inlet. Launching with what they describe as "a dozen golden oldies," the inaugural line ranges from a 90s Deep Cove Daze design to a nod to the 80s surf n' turf favourite, Seven Seas. The t-shirts are printed and shipped from Vancouver, through a partnership they've developed with custom clothing company Coastal Reign. They're $35 plus tax each, and shipping is free. Proceeds go to support local journalism and the free service that the North Shore News provides its readers, online and in print. You can find the store at shop.nsnews.com

TED conference returning to Vancouver
W
hat do Al Gore, Bill Gates and Elon Musk have in common? They all have surprisingly short names. Also, they'll be speakers at the 2022 TED conference dubbed 'A New Era.' The conference will be held at the Vancouver Conference Centre from April 10 to 14; it's the first time the famed conference will be held here after two years of pandemic pauses. "A lot has changed since we last gathered in Vancouver for TED three years ago. We return not for more of the same, wonderful though that was, but to celebrate a new era," states the conference's website. The five-day conference will feature parties, workshops and exhibits. And, of course, TED Talks, the brand's marquee creation. Among this year's speakers are former American vice-president Al Gore, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and philanthropist and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Other notable speakers include Finland's current prime minister Sanna Marin, actress and filmmaker Bryce Dallas Howard, and Michael Schur (who was one of the writers and producers for The Office, and who co-created Parks and Rec and Brooklyn 99 and created The Good Place). There will also be speakers with all sorts of science and technology backgrounds, including the chief scientific officer with Moderna, one of the companies producing a COVID-19 vaccine. Unfortunately, attendance will be limited as Vanguard and Standard levels have sold out (US $5,000 and $10,000, respectively). The Donor level still has some space, but that'll set you back $25,000 for the week of activities. The $250,000 Patron level has space too, which includes all the bonuses and a five-year membership.

Lamplighter reopens after lengthy temporary closure
W
A Donnelly barman Trevor Kallies continues as Beverage Director and is tasked with curating the Lamplighter's drinks and beer lists. For entertainment, The Lamplighter will offer weekend DJs, plus pinball, and pool. Plans are underway to round out the pub's event calendar - and you can rest assured some of its popular prepandemic special events will be making their comeback soon. The Lamplighter is located at 92 Water Street in Vancouver.
fter two years of silence, the Vancouver International Guitar Festival will be back strumming along this year. The fourth edition will take place more than three years after the pandemic nixed two festivals. The two-day festival of all things six-string (and other numbers of strings) will include exhibitions, master classes and workshops for people who want to make their own. "We’ve seen an incredible surge in sales over the last two years here and around the world, with guitar manufacturers and luthiers chalking up record sales to players at all levels, all price points," says organizer Shaw Saltzberg. "Just like Rolling Stone asked, 'did everyone buy a guitar in quarantine or what?'” Luthiers, for the record, are people who make guitars and other stringed instruments. Vancouver has several professional shops; the festival will bring more than 60 in on their exhibition floor to show off their hand-crafted work. Along with the guitars (both electric and acoustic), there will be almost anything you can strum, from ukuleles to big bass guitars. Along with the art and craft of creating a guitar, there will also be concerts and guitar playing classes; the schedule is still being determined. The festival is scheduled for Sept. 24 and 25, 2022 at the Creekside Community Centre; tickets will be available online.

hen the lights dimmed inside Vancouver's storied Lamplighter Public House in Gastown at the end of 2020, the temporary closure had plenty of locals feeling nervous. Was it to be the end of an era for the popular Donnelly Group pub? As it happens, the temporary closure ended up being just that: temporary. Now the Lamplighter is welcoming back patrons this week, with an official grand opening celebration on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. Owned and operated by Donnelly since 2007, the property itself has been home to a pub or restaurant since its earliest days at the start of the 1900s. In 1925, a handful of Vancouver establishments were granted licenses to serve alcohol, including The Lamplighter, making it one of the oldest pubs in the city. Since its first pour, as a press release points out, The Lamplighter has "survived two world wars, the Spanish Flu, and the Great Depression," and, we now know, the COVID-19 pandemic, too. In fact, though the Lamplighter may not have been serving pints and taking in revenue this past year-plus, the pub

Now Lamplighter patrons can enjoy sitting down at pale wood tables and being surrounded by greenery, off-white walls, vintage-style wallpaper, antique chandeliers, and custom tile floors. On top of the physical changes, the public house will now boast a new menu created by acclaimed Vancouver chef Mike Robbins (AnnaLena, Their/ There). Charges filed in 2018 double homicide that claimed life of teen bystander
ALFRED WONG / FILE
A
fter four years police are charging a man in the deaths of two people in 2018, including a 15-year-old bystander. On January 13, 2018, multiple people were hit by bullets in what police believe was a gang-related shooting. One was the person police believe to be the intended shooter, Kevin Whiteside, 23, who was "involved in gang life" according to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). Another was 15-year-old Alfred Wong who was hit by a bullet while in the back of his parents' car. Both died. Last week, VPD Chief Adam Palmer announced Kane Carter is being charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault in relation to a thrid person who was shot. "VPD investigators have long believed that Whiteside, who was involved in gang life, had come to the area that night to shoot a rival
who was having dinner at a restaurant near Broadway and Ontario Street, in Mount Pleasant. Gunfire was exchanged on the street as the Wong family passed by the restaurant in their car. A stray bullet entered the vehicle and struck Alfred," the VPD says in a press release. Palmer notes it was a long and extensive investigation involving hundreds of interviews and thousands of exhibits. "I’d like to acknowledge the Wong family and thank them
for their patience throughout this investigation. This has been an incredibly difficult time in their lives,” adds Palmer. “I hope this arrest will bring them some sense of peace.” In a statement, Wong's family thanked the VPD. "We hope that Alfred’s death will be a catalyst for change in combating gang violence in the Greater Vancouver Area and that going forward there will be no more similar incidents," reads the statement. GETTY
You’ll never feel so safe. As the largest art museum in Western Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery has a stately presence with an elegant facade. It is featured in numerous TV shows and films annually, with some productions filming in the popular location in recent months. Last Wednesday, locals shared images of the Hornby St. building transformed to look like Washington D.C. for a Netflix show called The Night Agent. The show is about a lowlevel FBI agent who "works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings until the night it does, propelling him into a conspiracy that leads all the way to the Oval Office," according to IMDb. American actor Gabriel Basso ( The Kings of Summer, Hillbilly Elegy) plays the leading role. One photo shows an FBI vehicle that reads "FBI Washington Field Office Evidence Response Team" on the side, while another shows police on the "scene." A third photo also shows a picture vehicle that reads "Channel 2" on the side to make it look like it belongs to a local news local station. By Elana Shepert
