Opinion: Save Old Growth group unapologetic after littering Main St with hundreds of paper flyers
BOB KRONBAUER
BOB KRONBAUER
I
f you found yourself on Main Street last weekend you no doubt noticed the hundreds of paper flyers that could be seen blowing around the sidewalks and the middle of the street thanks to the Save Old Growth protest group. The group conducted a campaign which saw volunteers handing out flyers as well as stapling them to telephone poles, using thumbtacks to apply them to other poles, and sticky gum to apply them to bus shelters. There's no way you could have missed the flyers as some poles had four applied to them, and the sheets of paper were blowing in the wind as if someone stepped into the street at Main and 12th Ave and simply threw a stack of them in the air. The group's stated mission is to get the B.C. government to "pass legislation to immediately end all old growth logging" in this province, in order to fight climate change. Meanwhile they are literally littering the streets with an excess of waste made out of trees, and the irony is so thick you can slice through it with a chainsaw. However, the group isn't seeing that irony, or even admitting
any fault. We reached out to them via email with some questions regarding how their leaflets found their way onto the streets, and if they may be worried about the public's perception of a group whose actions appear to be in direct conflict with the actions they're trying to get the government to take. Suffice it to say they are not concerned. They wouldn't answer our direct question of how many sheets of paper were printed and distributed.
Instead they tell us to focus on what the government is doing about old growth logging "before thinking about if the odd flyer that blows off a lamppost or is discarded by the public is an important issue." This is classic whataboutism that we're used to seeing politicians we're writing about use - the deflection away from an issue by pointing at something else. In response to our question about exactly how the flyers ended up blowing around the streets, they blamed the general public for it.
They tell us: "When we passed them out directly to people, we saw some people throw their leaflets on the ground." It's unclear why they didn't pick them up when they saw people throwing them on the ground, but they tell us "it is the responsibility of the media to tell the scientific truth to the public about issues which greatly affect every single person in society, instead of focusing on negligible issues such as a bit of litter." Okay. I will pass that on to the full-time climate change reporter we employ here, as well as my opinion

that the ends seem to justify the boneheaded means for this group. Lastly, answering a question we didn't ask, Save Old Growth express their support for the forestry sector in B.C., and apparently the paper and pulp industries by proxy. They tell us they are "specifically calling to an end to old growth logging in BC, not all logging. Sustainable well-practiced forestry has an incredibly important part to play in our future." On that we can agree. By Bob Kronbauer

n open letter from Heritage Vancouver regarding the city’s plan to demolish the 1912-era Balmoral Hotel is making the rounds. It was penned March 10 by the organization’s executive director, Bill Yuen. Have to admit before I read the letter, I concluded it was probably a public call to stop demolition of one of Vancouver’s oldest and most notorious single-room-occupancy hotels. Turns out it isn’t, as Yuen explained to me in a phone conversation. “The common assumption is that heritage organizations would say something quite strongly in these situations, and most likely they would say, ‘Don't demolish the building,’” he said of the Chicago-style “architectural gem” that is on a municipal list of significant buildings. “But it's not so straightforward. It's not as simple as save, or don't save the building.” It’s more nuanced than that, he said. Particularly when understanding the dark history associated to the Balmoral and the problems it caused for tenants, emergency service personnel and the City of Vancouver, which eventually purchased the building from the Sahota family two years ago. “Whether or not the building should be demolished, should be a question for the people who are connected to the building more than it is a question for us,” Yuen said.
“If we go out and say don't demolish it, then what happens if it doesn't serve these people — if it's not what they need?” 'Heritage work is stories' At the same time, Yuen is advocating that stories of people who lived in the Balmoral, or who have a connection to the building, should be preserved somehow in an oral history. Good or bad, the city’s history is important to document, he said. “An important part of heritage work is stories,” he said. “Maybe we can help disadvantaged people feel safe and create space for them to tell their stories so that the public better understands the history of the site.” Yuen was clear he doesn’t think Heritage Vancouver should lead such an exercise, or impose its view, but would be willing to assist in whatever form best suits the people who want to share their stories about the Balmoral. Many tenants of the hotel were Indigenous. Which adds another dimension to the pending demolition of the building. As we’ve seen across the country, as more horrific stories emerge about Canada’s residential school system and unmarked graves, some of the schools are still standing. Some believe they should remain intact to remind all Canadians about the country’s dreadful history, while others want them burned to the ground.
I have yet to hear from someone who wants to preserve the Balmoral. It’s important to note though that antipoverty advocates fought for years for better conditions in the hotel and blame the city for letting the Balmoral fall into such disrepair, which triggered its closure in 2017 and sale in 2020. 'Underinvestment and mismanagement' Fast forward to 2022 and the building is coming down. The city’s chief building official issued an order Feb. 15 requiring the Balmoral to be demolished “due to numerous life-safety concerns." “The building poses a risk of injury to the public and persons adjacent to the building in the event of a fire or similar incident,” the city said in announcing the order. “Despite the city’s ongoing efforts to maintain the safety of the building, the decades of underinvestment and mismanagement by the building’s previous owners was irreversible.” The city said that after receiving two thirdparty engineering reports on the current fire and structural risks, it became clear the hotel has deteriorated to the point that it poses a danger to the public and adjacent buildings. In 2017, then-deputy city manager Paul Mochrie — now city manager — told reporters it would cost several million dollars to stabilize the Balmoral. More repairs would
DAN TOULGOET
Heritage Vancouver’s take on city’s plan to demolish 1912-era Balmoral Hotel not what you think
then be needed to fix up rooms and the hotel’s electrical and plumbing systems. Which brings us back to the purpose of Yuen’s letter, which was to have people think about heritage as more than just saving or preserving buildings considered important by architects and historians. The Balmoral being a discussion point and example of that perspective. “The question of who has the power to decide the meanings of the Balmoral Hotel matters a great deal,” Yuen said in his letter. “This is especially true because we know there are many people with real and difficult experiences with the Balmoral and the Downtown Eastside who are not in a position to see the building as an architectural gem. This is a very important and difficult urban history in the Downtown Eastside that is not part of the official heritage account.” By Mike Howell

there'll be more than 40 performers. "The return to in-person events for the 2022 Festival gives audiences a muchneeded opportunity to celebrate glamour, decadence, and comedy, as only the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival can — no ifs, ands, but plenty of butts," say organizers in a press release. Offstage there'll also be workshops and T.I.T. Talks, the festivals take on TED Talks focusing on burlesque. The Buffies, a members-only awards gala will also take place over the weekend. The VIBF has been an annual event since 2006, though the pandemic did mean the 2020 festival was cancelled and the 2021 event was online only.

No, it's not CIty Council meetings (those never went away); the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival (VIBF) has events, stages and workshops booked for this April, from the 6th to the 9th. "Get ready to see each other in real life again because...it's gonna get weird," the festival organizers say online. This year will include two nights of stage shows at the Vancouver Playhouse. While a line-up has yet to be shared, headliners and feature performers will include Lola Frost (who's headlined from Stockholm to Calgary to the Burlesque Hall of Fame) and Judith Stein (who's been a burlesque artist since the 70s). Canucks benching arena organist CHIPOTLE

The expansion Seattle Kraken hired the organist from the movie Slap Shot, Rod Masters, though he likely won’t be playing “Lady of Spain.” Canucks fans won’t be hearing “Lady of Spain” for the foreseeable future either.
ooks like Vancouver will have not uno, not dos, but tres locations of Mexican fast-food giant Chipotle. The U.S.-based chain has put up signage at 398 Robson Street, setting up shop for its third location within city limits in what was previously a Starbucks. It's been quite some time since the famous burrito and bowls chain has opened a new location in Vancouver. Chipotle has long operated outposts at 818 Howe Street in downtown and at 532 West Broadway near City Hall. Chipotle also has several locations across Metro Vancouver, including in Burnaby, West Vancouver, Surrey, and Langley. In Port Coquitlam, Chipotle operates its "Chipotlane" model - it's a drive-through pick up for pre-placed orders (not on-demand ordering through a speaker like other fast-food chains). It's the first Chipotlane in Canada, too. When it comes to the new Robson Street Chipotle, the company has not shared details, but the business license is making its way through the city's system. No word yet on a target opening date. And, yes: Guac is still extra.

or decades, the organ has been part of the soundtrack of hockey, whether it was the classic “Charge” fanfare or renditions of modern pop and rock songs. While the organ fell out of favour in the 80’s and 90’s, it experienced a resurgence in the new millennium as the NHL focused on history and tradition, with most NHL teams hiring an organist. The Tampa Bay Lightning even took out 574 seats in their arena to install the largest pipe organ in the league back in 2011. For 22 years, Mike Kenney has been the organist at Vancouver Canucks games, part of the in-arena entertainment alongside the DJs and crowd pump-up videos. Fans who go to games now, however, won’t be hearing him play. In fact, the organ hasn't been featured in the last three Canucks home games. In recent games, the organ has been dropped from the in-arena experience at Rogers Arena as the Canucks experiment with other ideas. Most notably, chordal stabs on the organ would punctuate goal announcements — they've now been replaced by electric guitar power chords. The concern is that the sound of the organ doesn't fit with everything else the Canucks are doing to create a boisterous atmosphere in Rogers Arena. Instead of continuing to build hype in the crowd,
it's thought that the organ causes the energy in the arena to dip. Kenney was first hired back in 2000, acing his audition after years of studying jazz at Humber College, entertaining on cruise ships, and playing in local bands in Vancouver. He’s been a staple at Canucks games ever since, even if he was sometimes only called upon to play a few times per game. Of the 32 teams in the NHL, only six other than the Canucks do not

s the cannabis industry grows, so do things related to it. That includes a union; the BC Budtenders Union is a thing (it's only a couple of years old) and just signed up its first members in Vancouver. Workers at the East Hastings Eggs Canna shop have voted to become the first cannabis retail workers in B.C.'s Lower Mainland to join the young union, which includes retail staff on Vancouver Island and growers in the Okanagan. The BC Budtenders, and its new members, are part of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) 1518. The budtenders are their own division in the union, which also represents Save-On-Foods, Shoppers Drug Mart and Safeway employees. The union represents 26,000 workers, according to their website. The union's secretary-treasurer Patrick Johnson says the

Local business acquired by global leader in brand partnerships
A
Vancouver-founded company that has helped countless businesses grow their branded content is entering an exciting new chapter. Pressboard, launched in 2014 locally by Jerrid Grimm and Tiam Korki, offers metrics tools for understanding the impact of branded content. So it's no wonder a globally-recognized company like Impact.com took notice. Impact.com announced March 15 they have acquired Pressboard, though the companies say business will carry on as usual, with a big boost for what Pressboard can do. "This acquisition empowers us to add new features and integrations faster, and propel your business forward like never before," Pressboard tells its current and prospective clients on their website. Pressboard is a remote-first company and has hubs in Vancouver, Toronto and New York. Impact.com is a partnership management platform driving partnerships for more than 2,000 brands. “Impact.com’s acquisition of Pressboard aligns with our mission to revolutionize and power the partnership economy. To succeed in this highly competitive landscape, publishers, brands, and agencies must be equipped with best-in-class technology to drive profitable revenue,” said David A. Yovanno, CEO of Impact.com in a media release about the acquisition. “The future of commerce is content-driven, and this acquisition allows for more publishers to meet the demands of today’s digital consumers with authentic experiences that deliver real results.” “We are thrilled to combine forces with impact.com and continue to build the tools that allow publishers to partner with their advertisers and create powerful and engaging branded content programs for their audiences,” said Pressboard co-founder Grimm. "Today, we’re excited to get behind the budtenders at Eggs Canna and start to organize around Vancouver," said Johnson in a press release. "Workers have been at the forefront of this industry from its inception, shapeshifting cannabis to benefit their communities, and their influence is only growing." Around 70 per cent of retail cannabis workers in Victoria have joined the union, according to the release, but until the East Hastings Egss Canna it didn't represent any retail workers on the mainland. Johnson suggests more unionization should come to the industry. "At every point along the cannabis supply chain, workers deserve a voice,” he says. “Everyone that works with cannabis plays an integral role in its production process. From its growth to its distribution, sale, delivery, and eventually consumption, pot must serve everyday people."

Local scientists discover how to 3D print testicular cells
UBC
3
D printing in the medical field has reached another milestone. UBC scientists have discovered how to 3D print human testicular cells, a technique that one day could help people living with untreatable forms of male infertility. “We’re 3D printing these cells into a very specific structure that mimics human anatomy, which we think is our best shot at stimulating sperm production,” says Dr. Ryan Flannigan, a urology assistant professor at the B.C. university. "If successful, this could open the door to new fertility treatments for couples who currently have no other options.” Infertility affects 15 per cent of couples and male factors are a contributing cause in at least half those cases, Flannigan adds. The most severe form of male infertility is known as nonobstructive azoospermia (NOA), where no sperm is found in the ejaculate. Some who are diagnosed with NOA can get surgery to find extremely rare sperm, Flannigan says, but the procedure is only successful about half the time. It's this group that Flannigan's team wants to help as their chances for having a biological child end there. For the recent study, the UBC researchers retrieved stem cells from a NOA patient. The cells were then grown and 3D printed onto a petri dish into a hollow tubular structure that resembles the tiny tubes that produce sperm. Twelve days after printing, the scientists found that the cells had survived and were showing early signs of sperm-producing capabilities. “We are really excited about this,” Flannigan says of the “hopeful” discovery. Now, the team is working to “coach” the printed cells to
produce sperm. If that happens, those sperm could be used to fertilize an egg by in vitro fertilization. Through their research, Flannigan says they've been able to take a closer look at what contributes to NOA. “Our whole lab is really trying to move towards understanding what is going on for these individuals who are not able to
produce sperm and can we identify the mechanisms and then overcome them with technology such as this,” he says. Before the technology reaches a clinic, Flannigan says safety measures and experiments would have to take place. This is just the beginning of their journey, he says. By Alanna Kelly

Dogs rescued from ‘dire situations’ arrive at YVR
T
hirty-four rescue dogs from China met their “forever” families last week just outside Vancouver International Airport. Yi Ping Lai, founder of U.S.-based World of Angels, said these dogs were rescued from “dire situations” including from the dog meat trade, puppy mills and the streets. “Seeing our dogs, who were suffering from cruelty and near-death experiences when we rescued them, finally have happy and loving families of their own is the most rewarding experience for us at World of Angels,” said Lai. “That’s the best dream you can ever have as a rescuer.” The dogs were picked up by families outside a cargo warehouse close to the airport, who waited for almost five hours with anticipation to finally meet their new pets and give them a forever home. One adopter, Gabrielle Wasylyshyn, who travelled from Nanaimo, said she started looking online to adopt a dog a month ago and was really excited when her application process went smoothly. "I'm excited, but a little nervous, but generally excited," said Wasylyshyn, adding that her dog is a mixed-breed with a "docile and calm" nature. "Just getting everything sorted and seeing how she will react is something I'm really looking forward to." However, bringing them over was complicated by COVID-19 and the high cost of flying animals from overseas. World of Angels Foundation rescued the shelter dogs from Beijing, China, with the help of two other animal-rescue organizations, finding them adoptive homes in B.C. Lai told the Richmond News the process to prepare everything for the shelter dogs to be flown to B.C. was “tremendously difficult,” but they were able to do so with the help of Lady Freethinker and Rescue Paws Canada. “The cost of flying for the dogs is very expensive and we work really hard to raise the funds … and it costs over $2,000 U.S. per dog to fly on the plane,” said Lai. “Another stressful moment was when one of the shelters in China was also being locked down because of a COVID-19 exposure and so we were trying to rush the dogs out of the shelters as fast as we could, or else they wouldn’t be able to leave or have a chance of leaving for a long time.” However, she added, a “world of angels” came together to

make this rescue mission possible despite the high costs. Lady Freethinker donated $43,000 to World of Angels to help relocate the shelter dogs in this particular rescue. “We want to take the opportunity to salute the many faceless animal heroes and activists in China who have collaborated and supported us through the challenging journey and express our gratitude to our partners, Lady Freethinker and Rescue Paws Canada, in helping us fly these dogs over and find them happy homes.” By Brendan Kergin

he province continues to roll out free rapid antigen test kits for British Columbians. Now, everyone aged 40 and older can pick up one kit containing five tests every 28 days from participating pharmacies. As of March 15, seven million tests have been shipped to pharmacy distributors and more than 1.86 million have been dispensed so far across the province. You’ll have to present your personal health number when you pick up a kit, or if someone else is getting it for you, they will have to present your personal health number and your date of birth. Individuals should pick up a test kit when not having symptoms of illness to use at a future time when they have symptoms of illness. Three charged in illegal gaming house bust
T
hree people have been charged with keeping a common gaming house in the wake of an October 2020 police bust at a Vancouver residence. Police were called to 200-block West 45th Ave. after
someone who saw evidence of illegal gaming called 911. The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia’s (CFSEU-BC) Joint Illegal Gaming Investigation Team (JIGIT) was immediately involved and began executing search warrants. On March 16, police said evidence indicated the house was being rented for the purpose of setting up and operating an alleged illegal gaming establishment. Among items seized were $220,775; poker chips, tables and playing cards; score sheets with client names and cash balance sheets; cellphones; and a money counter. The individuals facing charges are: Mun Bun Ng, 55, of Vancouver Rong Zan Wu, 45, of Burnaby Wen Bo Li ,47, also of Burnaby "CFSEU-BC continues to target all aspects of criminal activities including illegal gaming as a part of a coordinated organized crime enforcement strategy in B.C.,” said JIGIT Insp. Mandeep Mooker in a statement. “Illegal gaming
activities undermine the integrity of our financial institutions and allow criminals to secure the proceeds of crime not just for personal benefit but to fuel additional crimes. Enforcement action such as this one has a strong immediate impact and long-term disruption implications.” Illegal gaming houses are nothing new in B.C.
B.C. gaming houses Peter German’s 2018 report into money laundering in Lower Mainland casinos notes criminal enforcement of gaming laws by police reaches back a century to the opium dens and illegal gaming houses. “Although the legal complexion of gaming has changed a great deal over the past century, police enforcement has tended to remain complaint-driven and focused on illegal houses,” German said. His report noted such houses have been associated with loansharking. From 2005 to 2008, 284 gaming incidents were reported; 183 involved illegal common gaming houses, he noted. “Twenty-five reports involved common gaming houses operated by organized crime figures or frequented by gang members,” German’s report said. “Two were the scenes of murder or attempted murder. Children were abducted from one gaming house to force the payment of a debt.” By Jeremy Hainsworth

It’s important to never respond to spam or phishing emails and never click on a link embedded within a suspicious email – links may be infected with malicious programs.” If someone believes they have received a fraudulent message or phone call, they can report it to the Canadian Antifraud Centre. “Public Health strongly encourages that eligible British Columbians get fully vaccinated as it is the best thing they can do to keep themselves, their loved ones and their communities safe from COVID-19,” said the statement. Free event to celebrate fierce, famous females in floral form
A
n international series of floral events celebrating influential women will be popping up in Vancouver this summer. Visitors to the city core will be able to catch a number of pieces featuring mannequins covered in flowers in the fashion of each of the famous women. The series means queens, artists and activists will be installed around the city in gowns, dresses and other costumes made of brightly coloured petals. The event series, titled FEMMES, is being organized by Vancouver's Fleur de Villes. In a press release they say the series is dedicated to "culturally, politically, and historically significant women." Along with the petalbedecked mannequin, there will be QR codes linking to bios on each of the women. Each city will have a different series of women; the first in the series has launched in Miami with depictions of Audrey Hepburn,
Cleopatra and Frida Kahlo, among others. Who will be in the Vancouver event has yet to be announced, though in a press release announcing the series event organizers note west coast Canadian artist Emily Carr will be depicted at some point. Vancouver is the sixth date in the series, with the plant-based artwork on display from June 3 to 12 (Toronto and Montreal are just before). Specific locations of pieces haven't been announced, although it will take place in downtown Vancouver. Along with the flowery art a series of events will be coming as well, though specifics haven't been released yet. "We felt that this was the ideal time to launch Fleurs de Villes FEMMES as people are starved for in-real-life, tactile and inspirational experiences," says Fleur de Vile co-founder Tina Barkley in a press release. Vancouver's newest craft brewery promises beach vibes all year long

he west side of Vancouver will get something it's been sorely missing during the independent brewery boom in B.C. A brewery. When Brewing August opens its doors it'll be the furthest west of any independent brewery. Those doors will be at 1614 West 3rd Ave. in the border area between Kitsilano and Fairview, sometimes called the Armoury District. Brewing August was founded by brothers-in-law Travis Rea and Tate Lillies (the brewery is a trio now, with Adam Jones) in late 2020. Rea, a chef by trade, had spent some time outside the food industry as the hours worked better for family life. But as the pandemic wore on and he had more time on his hand, his passion for beer grew. "I really got into it when COVID came," Rea tells Vancouver Is Awesome. "My rudimentary equipment kept getting better and better and better and the beer was, basically from the first batch — aside from a couple that didn't turn out — good." Lillies has a background in software
and marketing and the two decided to start making a go of it. "He's a lot of the brains, I'm a bit more of the brawn," Rea says. "I have the brewing knowledge and the skills and the palette to compliment his ability to put together a decent financial plan."
The pair came up with a brand and started making beer under the Brewing August name with the help of a few other breweries, like Vancouver's Settlement Brewing and Five Roads Brewing in Langley (near where Rea lives). They're now working with Patina

area. He wanted to find a space outside of the East Vancouver brewing hub that's developed. They found their new home in a light industrial area just a few minutes' walk from Granville Island. "It was almost like a good omen that we found this location," he says. "This is the area that really resonated with the brand." Right now they're waiting on the permitting process; they got the space in October and had to wait until February for the first round of permits. Now they're working on building permits. While it's been a slow process, Lillies says he's hopeful they'll be open for the summer. They're aiming to create a nano-brewery with a taproom attached. Beer would be available to go, as well. "We're trying to create something that has a beach vibe to it, a backyard vibe," he says. Even though they don't have their own space yet, there are several places to try their beers across Vancouver and the metro area. By Brendan Kergin

Brewing in Coquitlam while they prepare their own site. "We wanted to start with a brand first," says Rea. "So the idea is to really capture the essence of summertime and outside. It ties in nicely with our location, closer to the Kits beach area." "August in Vancouver is a time in Vancouver where everyone's happy and in good spirits and at the beach," Lillies adds. So far they have four core beers they can, and Rea's interested in branching out once the brewery is settled. "They all have a unique flavour to them, but if there's a similarity to them all...colour is one, and they're all bright summertime flavours," he says. He loves IPAs, he adds, but Brewing August won't be an IPA-only place. Right now their core beers include a blonde IPA, a golden IPA, a Citra pilsner and a pale ale. Lillies notes that in a bit of coincidence liquor stores in Vancouver's western regions have been the most eager to buy-in and they're eager to set up shop in the
