Scientists weigh in on peak time for cherry blossoms

W

predict peak bloom dates in four cities on three continents. "While it is known that cherry trees bloom earlier each year as climates warm, complex weather patterns make annual prediction extremely difficult," states the competition website. How trees respond to those climate changes is something Wolkovich is interested in. "In my lab at UBC, we wanted to improve our model for predicting how trees respond to climate change, particularly by observing when they leaf out or flower," she says in a press release. "We decided to study cherry trees because we know a lot about their history—the record of peak bloom of cherry trees in Kyoto, Japan is the longest human record we have of recurring biological events." A colleague of hers, Dr. Jonathan Auerbach,

says using citizen scientists can help. "The combination of non-expert predictions can be incredibly accurate. For example, when contestants guess the number of jellybeans in the jar at the fair, the average is often alarmingly close. We wondered whether citizen scientists can similarly participate in cherry blossom prediction," he says in the release. As this is the first year of the competition, whether the predictions are accurate is yet to be seen everywhere. But so far two teams were very close on the first of the cities, which is Washington D.C. By Brendan Kergin GETTY

hen's the ideal time for cherry blossom photos in Vancouver? "The overall consensus is that the cherry trees will likely bloom between late March and early April. For Vancouver, the average predicted peak bloom date is April 2," says UBC climate scientist Dr. Elizabeth Wolkovich. But where did that consensus come from? Wolkovich and other UBC researchers are trying to narrow the date down, but it's difficult due to variable factors like weather, temperature and daylight. To help figure it out they're outsourcing the answer to the citizen scientists. They put together the first international cherry tree prediction competition, and wrangled more than 80 participants on four continents into more than 40 teams in the quest for the $5,000 prize. They're trying to

T

he company that owns The Georgia Straight has filed for an "assignment in bankruptcy," which is to say it is voluntarily filing for bankruptcy. Media Central Corporation Inc bought the alternative newspaper and online publication in March of 2020, after which their stock price rose to 13 cents, then tumbled to a single cent in value, where it has been languishing for the past few months. In a media release dated March 31, 2022, the company says that it "is no longer able to meet its financial obligations and has appointed Ira Smith Trustee & Receiver Inc. as its Licensed Insolvency Trustee (the "Trustee") to seek protection from its creditors and administer the process." The release also states that this will somehow "not affect Media Central's subsidiaries' operations," and that The Georgia Straight will "continue regular publication." We placed a call to the paper's editor, Charlie Smith, who curtly told us he was in a conference call, and immediately hung up the phone.

Date set for Jake Virtanen's sexual assault charge jury trial

DAN TOULGOET

F

ormer NHL player Jake Virtanen’s B.C. Supreme Court jury trial has been confirmed for seven days starting July 18. The former Canuck pleaded not guilty to sexual assault in Vancouver Provincial Court on Feb. 17. The trial will follow a pretrial conference in April with other pretrial application dates yet to be determined. A jury will be picked to hear Virtanen’s case July 14 and 16. Virtanen was charged with sexual assault in January following a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) investigation. The VPD said in a media release that the B.C. Prosecution Service had approved the charge in relation to an incident that allegedly occurred in Vancouver on Sept. 26, 2017. Virtanen was playing in the National Hockey League at the time of the alleged incident. Police say they started their investigation in May 2021 after a woman in her early 20s came forward. The 25-year-old was placed on leave from the Vancouver Canucks in May 2021. He most recently played with the HC

Spartak Moscow. He has reportedly been released by the team for supposedly breaching his contract. Virtanen is not in custody. None of the allegations have been proven in court and Virtanen remains entitled to the presumption of innocence. By Jeremy Hainsworth

T

he English Bay Barge is going to be deconstructed soon. But what if it

wasn't? Brothers Chris and Alex Willms say demolition should be the last option and want others to be considered first, including turning it into a living forest. "We want to see a public discourse about more possibilities for the barge," says Alex. "Our idea of filling it with a living ecosystem and turning it into a part of the landscape is the idea we like for the barge, but there's been no real discussion about different ideas for what we could do with this thing." While the empty hull is seen as something ugly and temporary by some, the brothers see it as an opportunity to create one of the city's stranger attractions. "It feels incomplete right now, empty," Alex says. "Our proposal is about changing, revitalizing it into something that isn't an eyesore."

A living barge The Wilms idea formed quickly over the end of March, moving from abstract to rendered in about a week. What they came up with is essentially a small forest inside the old wood chip barge, turning the empty vessel into a man-made partially floating habitat. "It could be a wilderness, it could be a garden, it could be accessible, it could be an island you look at from the shore," says Alex. Creating the natural piece is fairly straightforward they say; the bottom would be filled with soil, like a giant planter, and trees could be placed inside with a crane. Chris suggests ivy could be added as well, to cover the hull in a more natural way than industrial red. Over time it would become more and more landscape-like, he adds. "Once you've put the effort into doing it does last and evolve over time," he says. "This could become a longterm part of the city that would be even more amazing 50 years from now than it would be in the beginning," Alex says. And while in the Willms's vision the barge could, in a literal sense, be an urban forest with no human visitors, it could have an artistic value as well.

"It could be a very mysterious object that is also this fusion of the human-made and the natural, which is very much a present issue in Vancouver," Alex says.

Not the first While turning a barge into an island may sound far-fetched, many have been turned into houses, and at least a couple of smaller barges have become floating living landscapes. "We'll be posting a collection of reference projects that really help to explain this type of situation which happens often," says Alex. There are two projects they're already focusing on. One is the Smithson Floating Island, an art project that saw a barge filled with trees and towed around New York City for a week in 2005. Much more similar to what their proposing is Swale, a project started in New York in 2016 that is ongoing. Described as a "floating food forest" it's essentially an old barge filled with herbs, fruits and vegetables that can be harvested; it's both an art project, farm, and recycled industrial boat. "Our proposal is unique but not unprecedented," says Alex, who learned of the predecessors first and showed his brother. "I had never seen such a thing," Chris says. "When I first saw one of the floating living barges I was like 'Boom, this is proof of concept.' "It seems very feasible once you see it."

Industrial sized philosophy While the barge is essentially a big red hull, the brothers say it's come to represent more to people. To some, it's a piece of junk, but Chris says there's more there. "It means a lot more than that as a metaphor," he explains. "To people walking along the seawall, a lot of them have a lot of different ideas about the barge." That variety of ideas, thoughts and discussion the barge has created is worth considering, the brothers say. One central one is climate change, the duo say, as the barge came ashore during a massive windstorm that was a precursor to the flooding in Abbotsford during the rainiest fall ever in Vancouver

after the second warmest summer on record. "The idea of the barge is coming to represent something greater for Vancouver than simply the nuisance," Chris notes. That can be parlayed into something more tangible. "It can be more than an industrial novelty," Alex says. "It can be a hybrid of Vancouver's condition which is both industrial and natural CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

tanley Park has been a staple in Vancouver's identity since it was founded

in 1888. Obviously, the park hasn't always looked the way it does now, and it's evolved with the city's needs and wants. Back in 1911, the Vancouver Board of Park Commissioners commissioned a map of the park to help people find their way around the 1,000 acres of relative wilderness. Highlights include a semaphore station at the northern tip of Prospect Point for communicating with ships at the entrance to Burrard Inlet. While the 9 o'clock gun is shown it has a different, much better name: TimeGun. Can we bring that back? The biggest change, which is particularly conspicuous on a map, is Coal Harbour, which is much bigger than it is now. That's because shortly after this map was published the Lost Lagoon was created when a road and causeway was built heading into the park from West Georgia Street. This map shows the original, natural shape of the harbour. It also shows Deadman's Island as an island as well, before another causeway was built out to the little piece of land. Lots of other recent additions aren't there, like the Vancouver Aquarium, and that's no surprise. Some pieces that feel like they have

been around forever are also missing, though, like Lions Gate Bridge (and the road leading to it) which wasn't built until 1937, and had no precursor. There are paths around the shore, but no seawall, either. A few things on the map are still around today, the Brockton Oval was established in the 1890s and while it's not named on this map, it's drawn in. There's a lighthouse at Brockton Point, though the current structure was built in 1914. The Vancouver Rowing Club is noted on the map; it was founded in 1911. Some of the famous trees are already noted, including the Hollow Tree and the original Seven Sisters. Down in the area where the rose garden and aquarium sit now, there was already some build-up but there were some different features in 1911. A bandstand that predates the Malkin Bowl is there, and a refreshment pavilion are there, which isn't much of a surprise. There's also the old site of the zoo (closed in 1997). Nearby is a monkey house and seal pond, and a little further away appears to be a spot for buffalo. Goats and deer appear to have had their own pen a little way north, near where Lumberman's Arch is now. Elk were in a totally different area, where the lawn bowling club is now. By Brendan Kergin

SAVE THE BARGE

NOTICE OF ANNUAL PUBLIC MEETING The Board of Directors of Vancouver Airport Authority announces that the Annual Public Meeting will be held to present the Airport Authority’s 2021 Annual & Sustainability Report and financial statements.

MONDAY, MAY 9, 2022 12:00 p.m. Meeting begins The meeting will be held virtually on yvr.ca/APM. The 2021 Annual & Sustainability Report will be available on the website in advance. Submit your questions in advance to Community_Relations@yvr.ca or via Twitter using #YVRAPM. As a diverse global hub, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) connects people, cargo, data, and ideas and serves as a platform for our community to come together and thrive.

and urban, we think that's a cool idea." In more concrete terms, it can be an attraction and something to consider. "It's about redirecting our efforts and resources into something that's an investment in tourism, biodiversity, public art and climate action all at once," Alex says. "And, bonus, you don't have to weld a barge apart for months and months."

It's not Lego The idea that the barge must be removed seems simple, the brothers say. But, they point out, it's not a certainty and it won't be simple. "There's a reason we don't normally demolish large industrial ships in public," Alex points out, noting safety issues, along with the impact it will have on the enjoyment of a popular area in Vancouver for what could be months. "Vancouver wants to be an ecologically forward, awesome city and so if we don't need to go through this lengthy process of demolition, then why should we?" he asks.

Moving forward Right now the brothers are gauging the public's interest in the idea while the barge is still intact. No date for the beginning of deconstruction has been shared, but the intention has been announced. They hope to hear back from the community at large through their website and petition, to find out if there's enough momentum to save the barge. "We need to gauge community support; if there's enough then we'll contact the authoritative parties," Chris says. "We can't plan ahead of time; it's very much dependent on the interactions with the community." They also note that while they like their idea, it's not the only possibility. "We know the barge can't be left as it is, empty and abandoned. It was a novelty at the beginning, but the novelty is wearing thin," Alex says, noting that with the large, empty hull there's lots that could be done. "Demolition is just one choice."
