Glass artist reflects on the pandemic and what it's like to work on Granville Island

Instead of focusing on the material, he hopes his work is more representative. "Personally, the discussion point ideally is not the fact that it is glass. But maybe that it looks like a rocky shoreline or a waterfall." There is something special about the spaces which fill Granville Island as they allow outsiders to look upon artists and workers as they practice and create. Vancouver Studio

Glass shares those characteristics of watching and interacting with artists in their zone. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the number of people visiting Granville Island plummeted. It became a ghost town. "It was a bit of a shock. I likened it to a horror movie or something where you see deserted streets and just nobody around, it was a very alien feeling," recalled Kikkert.

orn and raised in Vancouver, Benjamin Kikkert is a local artist who calls Granville Island home for his workshop and gallery, Vancouver Studio Glass. He joined the original owners of the studio in 2013, where he formally took it over and has been running it ever since. He graduated from Sheridan College in the craft and design program and has been creating with his choice of material, glass, for over 20 years. "The way I was trained, I'm very thankful for. I was trained in a craft and design tradition," said Kikkert. "So, I find that to connect with what I offer my clients and interacting with the public, you are actually often functioning as a designer, where you can bring different influences into the work, and it's a matter of accurate representation." Glass is just the tool that he has chosen to create and express what inspires him because his skill and passion for art is what turns the puddle of molten glass in the furnace into beautiful creations that he uses to represent places or experiences. "I really tried to access the experience through texture, colour, light, and bringing those together, you build a dynamic, out of a material, glass. For me personally, I really am an artist. I came into glass to access that material and to use it as an expression for inspiration," said Kikkert.

Kikkert was able to take time to himself during the pandemic, and he used the isolation to really dig down deep and find what his true inspiration is. "It allowed me to do some introspection," he said. "The advice I've received from the previous owner was to keep doing what I had been doing to get to that point in my career, CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

"There is something about perceiving a situation with your own eye and being able to see the balance and the flow around the room." During the pandemic, Kikkert relied on his "interest in innovation and experimentation and expression, in my work." "I can always develop in and share my enthusiasm through my work with my audience. So, with the pandemic, it let me step off the merry-goround if you will," he said. Visitors to Granville Island can watch the artists at work With relaxed restrictions and a more regular flow of visitors to Granville Island, Vancouver Studio Glass continues again to welcome more visitors to the gallery and watch as either Kikkert or other artists work in the studio. NOTICE TO BRITISH COLUMBIA DEPUY ASR HIP SYSTEM CLASS MEMBERS

Are you, or a family member, a resident of British Columbia who underwent a surgery to implant a DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System or ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System in Canada? This supplemental notice may affect your rights. Please read carefully. A proposed class action lawsuit captioned Wilson v. DePuy International Ltd., et al., Action No. S-116652, was filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia regarding allegations that the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System or ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System was defective, and that they failed prematurely, requiring revision surgery (“Wilson Action”). While not admitting liability, the Defendants agreed to settle the case. The BC Court certified the Wilson Action as a class action (“BC Class”) and approved the Amended Settlement Agreement on March 3, 2021 (“Settlement Agreement”). A notice of the settlement approval and process for making claims was published on April 26, 2021. This notice supplements that first notice, and describes the process for BC Class members to make additional claims pursuant to a “Most Favoured Class” clause in the Settlement Agreement which may provide for enhanced compensation.

Who is in the BC Class and Potentially Eligible to Participate in the Settlement? The BC Class is defined as follows: (a) BC Resident Opt-Out Subclass: all persons in British Columbia who underwent the surgical implantation of the ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System or ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System in a surgery occurring in Canada (“ASR Index Surgery”) and who have not timely opted out of this BC ASR Class Action. (b) Non-BC Resident Opt-In Subclass: all persons who previously were members of the Ontario ASR Class Action but who opted out of the Ontario ASR Class Action and who timely opted into this BC ASR Class Action. (c) All residents of Canada asserting the right to sue the Defendants independently or derivatively by reason of their familial relationship to a Class Member under either the common law of Family Compensation Act applicable to the BC Resident Opt-Out Subclass, or for Non-BC Resident Opt-In Subclass members, those defined pursuant to section 61(1) of the Family Law Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. F.3; as amended (or any similar legislation in any of the Canadian provinces and territories or the Civil Law of Quebec). While this remains to be determined, all members of the BC Class (including those who already opted in, but excluding those who have already opted out) may be eligible for compensation under the Most Favoured Class clause.

The Terms of the MFC clause The Settlement Agreement provided certain compensation to class members who were Eligible Claimants (who had among other things an ASR Revision Surgery) and who submitted a claim under the Settlement Agreement before October 25, 2021. The “Most Favoured Class” clause in the Settlement Agreement provides that “if a Class Member or Derivative Claimant would have received more individual compensation had he or she been a member of” a Quebec ASR Class Action that was settled in 2018 “then the Class member or Derivative Claimant shall be entitled to compensation or additional compensation that puts him or her in the same financial position as if he or she had been a member” of that Quebec Class. Additional terms of the MFC clause can be found in the Settlement Agreement. A final report was recently issued by the administrator of the Quebec ASR Class Action settlement and a determination must now be made of the impact of that settlement on entitlement of BC Class members who wish to make a claim for enhanced benefits. That determination may depend on the number and types of claims made by BC Class members under the MFC clause and, accordingly, has not yet been made. Please refer to the Settlement Agreement for specific terms and conditions. It may be found at https://DePuyASRclassactionBC.ca or call the Claims Administrator.

Vasily Podkolzin will dominate the AHL playoffs

By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

BRENDAN N KERGIN

T

he Canucks will be making the playoffs. Just not the NHL playoffs. While the Vancouver Canucks’ valiant efforts to play in the postseason have come up just short, their little brother down the road will be playing postseason hockey. The Abbotsford Canucks will head to the Calder Cup Playoffs after they wrap up the regular season on Saturday. They’re heading in hot, with an eight-game winning streak as of Tuesday morning. The Canucks’ top prospect, Jack Rathbone, has 15 points in his last 10 games, while top goaltending prospect Mikey DiPietro has found his groove after a shaky start to the season — he has a .927 save percentage across his last ten starts. The Canucks have a high-powered offence, averaging 3.46 goals per game — the fourth-highest in the AHL — and they’re going to get a boost for the playoffs. Two of Abbotsford’s leading scorers, Sheldon Dries and Nic Petan, will be returning to the AHL after a stint in Vancouver, along with speedy winger Will Lockwood. Dries and Petan have both scored at a greater than pointper-game pace for Abbotsford this season, with Dries among the league’s leading goalscorers with 35 goals in 54 games. More importantly, Dries, Petan, and Lockwood will be joined by Vasily Podkolzin. Podkolsin was briefly assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks ahead of the NHL trade deadline — a process referred to as “papering down” — which means he’s eligible to play in the AHL playoffs despite not playing a single game with Abbotsford this season. In his rookie season in Vancouver, Podkolzin took some time to adjust to the pace of play and the details required to play in the NHL. In recent weeks, however, Podkolzin has become one of the Canucks’ most impactful players with his diligent forechecking, savvy playmaking, wicked shot, and willingness to drive to the net. Heading into Tuesday’s game against the Seattle Kraken, Podkolzin had 9 points in his last 8 games. Whether placed on a line with J.T. Miller or Elias Pettersson, Podkolzin has proven that he can be a legitimate top-six forward in the NHL. Along the way, he’s seriously impressed his teammates and coach. “He’s probably the guy we talk about the most in the room,” said Canucks captain Bo Horvat after one particularly strong performance. “He’s an undercover really fast skater. He’s probably got the hardest shot on our team and his work ethic is through the roof. “He’s always in the gym, always the first guy on the ice in practice…He’s going to be a heck of a player for a lot of years in the league.” “I have to kick him off the ice every day,” joked head coach Bruce Boudreau about Podkolzin’s practice habits. “I think the sky’s the limit with him,” said J.T. Miller. “He’s a pro already. He’s got a lot to learn still, but the way he carries himself — he’s humble, he’s a great guy and we’re excited that he’s with us. There’s unlimited potential with him.” In Abbotsford, Podkolzin will get the chance to be a go-to guy, which should be invaluable for his development as well as Abbotsford’s chances to go far in the playoffs. “I find young players that play playoff games in the AHL, it almost fast tracks their development,” said AHL general manager Ryan Johnson to The Athletic’s Harman Dayal. “[Vasily] could take on a different role and I think that will help develop his game and confidence. He would play in every situation.” With how well he’s played in the NHL of late, Podkolzin should absolutely dominate in the AHL playoffs and return to the NHL next season overflowing with confidence.

ith more than 60 breweries and cideries signed up, more than 150 beers and ciders promised, and two days of music, the Vancouver Craft Beer and Music Festival is coming back in good form this July. Organizers of Vancouver Craft Beer Week (VCBW) promise a bigger and better festival more open to people that don't consider themselves craft beer

experts. The event will take over the PNE Fairgrounds on July 9 - 10. "Looking to the future, VCBW is no longer only for the beer aficionado," says Dax Droski in a press release. "While lovers of craft brews have played an instrumental role in making this event the summer staple it is today, now is the time for VCBW to welcome everyone, including the entire spectrum of beer drinkers.” Along with the epic amount of beers to

try, there will be food trucks, art and, in a first for the beer-centric event, live music. There will be two nights of music, with Toronto's Bedouin Soundclash headlining the Saturday night show with locals Titus Bank opening. Nova Scotia-based Skratch Bastid opens on Sunday, followed by Montreal's Half Moon Run on Sunday. “Between the quality (and quantity) of craft beer available, the musical lineup,

U RBAN S E N I O RS 'One of the most significant texts' on local history to be republished

D AM54-S4-: PORT P954 CITY OF VANCOUVER ARCHIVES

escribed as "one of the most significant texts on local history," a book featuring decades of conversations with a famed Squamish elder will be republished soon. "Conversations with Khahtsahlano 19321954" was first published in 1955, telling the stories of the people who lived in the area before a city was built. Chief August Jack Khahtsahlano was an important and influential figure in the Squamish nation at the turn of the century; he was a medicine man and worked with settlers moving into the area. Born in 1877 in a village called Xwáýxway which stood in what is now Stanley Park (his family was forced to move when a road was built through the village), Khahtsahlano was the son and grandson of chiefs and knew many details and stories from his family and people. Starting in 1932 he told these to Major J.S. Matthews, the first archivist for the city of Vancouver.

Those were turned into "Conversations with Khahtsahlano 1932-1954," a book that contained many details about the history and culture of the Squamish people and early settlers to the region. While the book, initially published by the city archives, is available online it's been out of print for decades. Now Massy Books is working on republishing the iconic work. "A couple of months ago Massy Books was contacted by a Squamish elder and asked to reprint this book, and so that is what’s being done!" says the shop on Facebook. "Extremely scarce and long-out of print, 'Conversations with Khahtsahlano 19321954' is one of the most significant texts on local history, and continues to be a deep source of knowledge about early “Vancouver” and traditional life." They're accepting pre-orders now; soft covers books are going for $45.95 and hardcovers will be $65.95. By Brendan Kergin

Local women's team just wins largest Indigenous basketball tournament in North America

A

n elated local Indigenous women's basketball team is celebrating a victory 17 years in the making. All My Relations (AMR) is the first Vancouver group to win a championship at the All Native Tournament — the largest Indigenous basketball tournament

in North America. The victory comes after a couple of difficult years, when the team struggled to stay together amidst COVID-19 regulations that prevented them from gathering to practice. The team also had to raise money to travel to Prince Rupert for the tournament, held from April 3 to 9.

Team manager Joleen Mitton tells V.I.A. that the final game was extremely close, with All My Relations beating the Similkameen Starbirds 57 to 52. And it wasn't a flush of wins to the final match, either. The team lost to the Starbirds in their first meeting 58 to 34. CONTINUED ON PAGE 17

Vancouver, Whistler win bid for 2025 Invictus Games

T

he Invictus Games are coming to Vancouver and Whistler. Last Friday morning, the official announcement was made that Vancouver and Whistler, in partnership with True Patriot Love Foundation, has won the bid for the Games. The event will take place in February 2025. These Games will be the first to incorporate winter adaptive sports, in addition to some of the core sports from previous Invictus Games. True Patriot Love is partnering with the Government of Canada, the Government of British Columbia and First Nations in Vancouver and Whistler to ensure the Invictus Games 2025 will be the most innovative and accessible Games to date. “As Invictus continues to adapt and evolve, I am extremely excited to announce that the Invictus Games Foundation has selected Canada to host the first-ever Winter Hybrid Games in 2025,” said Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, in a news release. “The Invictus Games Vancouver-Whistler 2025 will offer a global platform to expand the range and profile of winter adaptive sports. With deep respect, I’m also pleased to share that the Games in Canada will be held in partnership with the First Nations, in the spirit of truth and reconciliation with Indigenous communities,” he said. The Invictus Games 2025 will bring together more than 500 competitors from 20 nations to compete in adaptive sports, including the new winter sports: alpine skiing, nordic

skiing, skeleton, and wheelchair curling, in addition to the core Invictus Games sports of indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball. The new release notes staff will be working closely to ensure they respond to Canada’s Truth Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, and ensure Indigenous protocols are respected in all aspects of the Games. True Patriot Love is Canada’s foundation for the military community, working to support military members, veterans and their families

at every stage of their journey. “True Patriot Love Foundation is thrilled Canada has been chosen to host the Invictus Games 2025,” said CEO Nick Booth in a statement. “We are excited to bring this new, innovative concept of a hybrid winter games to Vancouver and Whistler, increasing access to the Invictus Games through the introduction of new snow and ice sports.” Whistler Mayor Jack Crompton said he is excited the Games are returning to Canada and Whistler.

“Whistler shares a commitment to inclusion and diversity, and our winter sport hosting roots run deep, so the inclusion of winter sports in the Invictus Games for the first time is an excellent fit,” said Crompton. “Whistler is honoured to be co-host along with Vancouver and in close partnership with regional First Nations and we look very forward to welcoming this powerful event.” Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart said he was equally thrilled to welcome the world. “The first-ever winter edition of the Invictus Games could not have taken place anywhere else,” said Stewart. “The legacies of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide the Invictus Games Foundation the perfect stage for this monumental event.” Premier John Horgan said British Columbians will be there to cheer all the athletes on. “British Columbia is proud to host the 2025 Invictus Game and, for the first time, athletes competing in winter adaptive sports,” said Horgan. “We stand ready to welcome athletes from the global military community to Vancouver and Whistler. Many have made tremendous sacrifices and overcome extraordinary barriers to be competing at the Invictus Games.” Additional details regarding the event will be released in the coming months. The public is encouraged to visit InvictusGames2025.ca to find out more about how they can support and participate. By Ian Jacques

"We had a rough first game against Masset, which is in Haida Gwaii and then we played Starbirds next and they just crushed us," she explains. "There was a lot of nerves." A few players had contracted COVID-19 in the weeks leading up to the tournament and the team was anxious. Thankfully, everyone recovered before they had to leave but it was a "stressful" time. For women coming off reserves or who live in the DTES, the team offers a safe and healthy outlet in the community. The 30 Indigenous women in the AMR community come from various nations and backgrounds and the team consists of twelve women ranging in age from 17 to 40 years.

"We have a group of young Indigenous people that are from different nations," she notes. "And it just kind of proves that people can work together. "I think that's what is really beautiful, being able to come together after such adversity. Not just for your nation, but for all the nations that are across Turtle Island. "It's a huge pride." All My Relations is hosting a basketball tournament at the Britannia Secondary School from May 7 to 9 that will include entertainment and a banner raising to celebrate the All Native Tournament victory. Plans for B.C.'s upcoming wildfire season

T

he province says it has learned from its mistakes and will apply those lessons to the looming wildfire season. MLA Murray Rankin, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, and Vernon Monashee MLA Harwinder Sandhu held a press conference last week to discuss what the province will be doing in 2022 to mitigate wildfires. Budget 2022 provides more than $2.1 billion to help people recover from the devastating floods and wildfires of last year, and to better protect communities against future climate disasters. The province came under criticism for its handling of last summer's White Rock Lake wildfire, and Rankin said lessons from last year will be applied to the upcoming fire season. “We are always learning,” he said. “These challenges, I won't say are unprecedented, but the degree of severity and frequency are unprecedented.” Rankin said climate change has resulted in three of the worst wildfire seasons on

record in British Columbia, occurring over the last five years. “The province is learning to do better with communication with Indigenous communities, who I think were somewhat concerned, it's fair to say, about our early response to that. We have lots to learn. Money is only part of that, it is that ability to work together across communities. A lot of this is about coordination and doing a better job,” he said. Rankin said at the end of the 2022 fire season, staffers will remain in place that would normally leave. "There are 400 people working permanently in the wildfire service in our province,” said Rankin. “The objective is to try to do better at planning and working with communities.” The province will be providing $145 million over three years to strengthen B.C.’s emergency management and wildfire services, including transforming the BC Wildfire Service into a yearround firefighting and risk mitigation workforce.

Luigi & Sons stocks a carefully-curated array of meats sourced from "highgrade local and global farms," according to the business, so you'll see beef from B.C.'s 63 Acres alongside A5 Wagyu from Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. Luigi & Sons is touted as a "one-stop shop for the best butcher experience in Vancouver." To that end, its multifaceted menu not only features butchered meats (including those in its dryaging program) but also takeand-make provisions and prepared items available for take-away (several salads, a prime rib sandwich, cookies, pies, and condiments). Operations of the shop are overseen by Toptable vet Chef Andrew Richardson (CinCin, Elisa) and store

manager Amanda Grant. Elisa opened in late 2018, having replaced a one-time Milestones at the corner of Hamilton and Helmcken. The intersection is definitely dominated by Toptable now; its renowned seafood restaurant Blue Water is on Hamilton right across Helmcken from Elisa. Toptable, which has been owned by Vancouver's highprofile Aquilini Group since 2014, operates several highend restaurants, bars, and cafes in Vancouver, Whistler, and even New York City, with plans for a new concept in downtown Victoria long in the works as well. This will allow both the BC Wildfire Service and Emergency Management BC to add capacity and equipment to deliver proactive services that focus on the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery of wildfires and other emergencies. A year-round wildfire service allows public safety professionals to complete more fire mitigation work before and after the summer months, and support communities in their FireSmart initiatives. Over the coming three years, an additional $98 million will fund wildfire prevention work and will help maintain road access to aid in future wildfire response. Budget 2022 also provides $90 million in community grants to complete FireSmart initiatives and fuel management activities that will make homes and communities safer from wildfire risk. The FireSmart program will be strengthened to help more communities participate in the program.

O

ne of Vancouver's most popular highend restaurants has a new next-door sibling at a prime Yaletown location. Elisa, the posh steakhouse operated by the restaurant group Toptable, now boasts an offshoot butcher shop and grab-and-go spot called Luigi & Sons. Luigi & Sons is located at 1119 Hamilton St at the space that had previously been home to Urban Thai Bistro, which ended its long tenure in the space in 2019. The long-awaited project, which we first learned about in late 2020, opened its doors earlier this month. The premise of the butcher shop is to offer guests the opportunity to take a bit of the Elisa experience home.

arrin and Sorrel McDonough have been making giant pieces of art, often referencing pop culture or events, for several years now. "It sort of started when I started hearing about Vancouver being a 'no fun city,'" Sorrel says. "I think you need to jump in and try to change things, even if it's a drop in the bucket." The duo decided to drop in, as much as anything, by entering the 2006 Red Bull Flugtag competition (there was one in Vancouver that year). After some research, they decided to build a replica of the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard. While the event was fun and inspiring, it was the material that stuck with them as much as anything. They had found Styrofoam worked best to create a light, strong and flexible (as far as creativity) craft. "It does everything," Sorrel says. "It's got a life of its own that we've embraced." And so the Styrogirls were formed. Why-o Styro? "It's also sandable, carvable, paintable. It's really a great material to work with," says Tarrin adding to a list that started with waterproof. "It's not great for the environment, so we try to reuse the Styro in future projects." To keep waste to a minimum they keep an eye out for free Styrofoam that's likely to be tossed, like at construction sites or even the Vancouver Art Gallery. Sorrell says she even tracked a piece down after it fell off a building in a windstorm. Once it's in their hands, they make sure it has a good lifespan. "Because it's got such a good structure, we just use it from project to project," says Sorrel. "We take it apart and use it again." In one case, their Lego man (a two-person costume that's the top half of figure), they re-dress it. The same structure has played Deadpool, Brock Boeser and Harley Quinn. Making realistic-looking objects out of very lightweight material has a side benefit. "It's fun to run and round and toss it back and forth and look like we're super strong," says Tarrin. A Team Effort It may surprise some people that the pair aren't prop builders or movie set designers.

Sorrel's career is tangentially related; she's a graphic designer. Tarrin works a little further (thematically) from their passion project; she's a bookkeeper for an IT firm. On Stryogirls projects both do fabrication, while Tarrin focuses on the painting and Sorrel deals with the graphic side. "This is purely non-professional," Tarrin says. "We like to refer to ourselves as an involuntary nonprofit." "Tarrin's job helps make sure we lose money slowly," jokes Sorrel. "She limits me, I'm on a budget. "We have our own roles and our own strengths." While they're the Styrogirls for most pieces, on big projects they become a big Styrofamily. "On some of these bigger projects we do it's pretty awesome because we involve the whole family," says Sorrel. Their mother has been doing this sort of thing for a while. "Our mother always made a lot of things for us because there'd be Barbie campers and stuff and we didn't have a lot of money," says Sorrel. "She figured 'I can make something better.'" "So yeah, we're definitely quite inspired by her example," Tarrin adds. "Other than my mom, one of our brothers is also a graphic designer. When we do projects that involve more people he's great to compliment Sorrel's skills." Their other brother helps too when he can, as a writer and video creator. Their other sister lives in Toronto and helps when possible.

into giant art

Their father, who doesn't have an artistic background, is sometimes called upon for logistics. Seen their work? Over the past 15 years they've created around 40 projects the public may have seen (and a few no one will see). That includes three Flugtag craft, most recently Airpug in honour of their friend's dog Donut. "We had created this backstory that Donut's dream was to fly and we were making it happen," says Tarrin. The pug's head was made out of a soccer ball created for the 2015 Women's World Cup in Vancouver.

One annual event they try to get to each year is the English Bay polar bear swim; on January 1, 2022 they dressed up as the barge. They've also gone as the Stay Puft marshmallow man, a giant penguin and Godzilla. Another day they try to mark each year is May 4, aka Star Wars day. They find a public space somewhere in Vancouver and set up their art on something there, creating a recognizable Star Wars character or ship. In the past they've turned the 'Walking Figures' near city hall into Chewbacca, a West End orb into BB-9 and the Vancouver Art Gallery lions into Yoda and Leia. "All year long I'm always looking for something that could become a Star Wars figure," Sorrel says. They've already picked a location for 2022, but won't reveal it until the day of, when they set up the temporary additions. "We're creating a creature," says Sorrel. "We're excited about it. It's in a more remote spot; we don't think many people will see it." Tarrin isn't too worried about an audience. "Half the time no one sees these things and we're entertaining ourselves," she laughs. That said, keep an eye out for a creature from a galaxy far, far away in a couple weeks. But don't be scared; it's a lightweight.
