Actor and comedian Ryan Beil joins V.I.A. as baseball writer

I

'm thrilled to announce that we've brought Vancouver's own Ryan Beil on board to write about the Vancouver Canadians baseball club. You may know him as the host of the new CBC Podcast Let's Make A Sci-Fi, from his many roles in film, as "Ryan the trainee" from A&W commercials, or as one of the talented improv performers who put on the weekly show The Sunday Service at The Fox Cabaret. People who attend Canadians games at Nat Bailey Stadium know him as one of the biggest C's fans in the city who has had season's tickets behind home plate for years. Others may know him as a Chicago Cubs superfan, a fault that some of us here are hoping to eventually beat out of him, but which we forgive him for. Beil will be writing a weekly column that will appear online and here in the paper, and I can promise you that you'll be entertained, you'll learn about the sport of baseball and our local team, and by the end of it you just may end up being a huge fan, just like he is. You can find Beil's first column on Pg A6.

re you ready to dance your heart out? That’s just what some of Vancouver’s talent does from the sandy shores of Kitsilano Beach to Gastown's sidewalks in the recently released short video. Created by actor and filmmaker Corey Wadden, A Dance Film is a self-professed “love letter to the city, to dance, and to everybody trying to make it through the day.” Starring local professional dancers and set to The Knocks’ dreamy electropop hit “Slow Song,” this slow-burn showcases the beauty of movement and the city. “Simply put, I wanted to brighten people’s day,” says Wadden. During production he worked closely with cinematographer Gabriel Kava and the featured dancers to choose locations around Vancouver and coordinate looks that embodied their connection to the city. For example, Felicia Chiappetta (who, full disclosure, is a reporting intern here at Vancouver Is Awesome) dances through the Granville SkyTrain station in homage to her daily commute. “Once we chose a location, I just danced from my feelings instead of given steps. It was all freestyle,” explains Chiappetta. She describes the experience as “freeing and cathartic,” just the therapeutic tone Wadden wanted to convey.

“We’ve all been having a hard time these past few years. I made this film to feel authentic and healing,” notes the filmmaker. He wants you, too, to get grooving once you see the short piece featuring Andrew Kyrzyk, Cora Kozaris, Chiappetta, Kaleah Crump, and Peter D’Souza. “I hope anyone who watches this gives themselves permission to let it out and dance like no one is watching.”

Wadden plans to continue his creative journey in Greece this summer, where he is studying with renowned performance artist Marina Abramović and others at the Marina Abramović Institute. Watch the video by scanning the QR code here. By Mae Folsom Jacobson

3 reasons why we need more geese on the field during ball games at The Nat Well, this season at The Nat… we got geese. The Canada Goose can be a divisive animal. Some people like ‘em. And some people hate them with a passion usually reserved for, I dunno, serial killers? Like, some people really, really hate The Canada Goose. But whatever side of that debate you come down on, I’m here to tell you: The geese in the outfield are a good thing, and I personally think the C’s should do whatever they can to attract more Geese to the ballpark. And here’s why: They can intimidate the opposing team Have you ever got a little too close to a Canada Goose? They don’t like it and they’ll let you know. Hissing at you with their

ans coming to Nat Bailey Stadium this season are being treated to our very own, homegrown, animal-onthe-field situation. Canada Geese, sometimes in pairs, sometimes in larger groups, are landing in the outfield and then hanging out as if they owned the place. Wild animals running amok on a baseball field is not a new phenomenon. Perhaps you’re familiar with the “rally squirrel” that gained fame and notoriety during the 2011 MLB playoffs? Or maybe you’ve heard the story of the mysterious black cat that crossed in front of the Chicago Cubs dugout at Shea Stadium in 1969, further cursing the most cursed team that was ever cursed by curses.

Proposed Changes to Development Contributions

On June 22, 2022, City Council will consider a report updating the City’s DCL program and rates. DCLs are fees collected by the City of Vancouver from all new development. These fees help pay for amenities such as parks, affordable housing, childcare centres, transportation and utility infrastructure that meet the needs of our growing city. If approved, new rates would come into effect on September 30, 2022. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Chris Clibbon, 604-873-7237 chris.clibbon@vancouver.ca vancouver.ca/financegrowth

On June 7, 2022, City Council will review an annual report which recommends new inflation-adjusted CAC Targets, as well as inflationadjusted Density Bonus Contribution rates for referral to a Public Hearing in July 2022. CAC Targets are contributions provided by property developers when City Council grants development rights through rezoning. Density bonusing is a zoning tool that permits additional floor space in exchange for amenities and affordable housing.

razored tongues. Taking wild swings at you with their powerful wings like a drunk in a bar fight. Imagine trying to track a fly ball in right field while one of these jerks is staring you down. It can’t be easy. The crowd absolutely loves them Any time a goose is spotted doing a fly-by, the crowd definitely notices. And when they land, it can lead to a standing ovation. If we increased the number of geese coming into The Nat and the frequency of their arrival, I’m confident the crowd would be whipped into a certified frenzy from start to finish. More geese might bring other animals

Now, I’m no zoologist or bird doctor, but I have a feeling if there was a large flock of Canada Geese that comfortably set up shop in the outfield, it would probably attract a few more animals. Maybe a couple of ducks? A family of raccoons? Certainly some crows. And before you know it, you could take in a ballgame and commune with nature at the same time. So what do you think? Are you a fan of the geese? Or do you think they should be given a lifetime ban from the ballpark? I mean, they’re essentially streaking when you think about it. By Ryan Beil

Brian Minter: Bring some zest to your drinks, meals with fresh herbs Good-sized containers hold more soil and moisture and require less watering, a bonus during the hot, dry months of summer. If you intend to grow the hardier herbs year-round, make sure you purchase a frost-proof container or at least ask for ‘well fired’ pots that will withstand modest to heavy frost. Move containers under eaves to minimize excessive moisture in the soil from winter rains and to prevent your pots from cracking. There is a huge trend toward growing organically, and it’s much easier today with a greater selection of organic products that are more reasonably priced and very effective. The soil you select for your containers should be both well draining and moisture retaining. I always look for professional soil blends, and I add about 20 percent organic matter, like composted manures and ‘Sea Soil.' Many totally organic soils are now readily available, but make sure they will drain well. Two important considerations are nutrients and pest control. Weekly applications of an organic fertilizer will do the trick, but in hot summer weather an application at each watering will make a huge difference. Fortunately, most herbs

single leafed ‘Italian,' is delightful in a range of dishes from soups and stews to lightly braised vegetables and egg dishes. It also makes a great garnish and breath freshener. Chives are some of the hardiest and most ancient of all herbs. I love garlic chives added to cheese dishes, salads, herb butters and sour cream dips. In spring the pink, puffy flowers of chives are edible and nice to sprinkle on salads. Mint can be invasive but is better behaved in containers. Today, we have many varieties of mint, ranging from apple and chocolate to orange and spearmint, and they are very popular as garnishes and in drinks and teas. Mojito mint anyone? They will also spice up salads, soups and meats. Oregano and marjoram are plant cousins and very similar in flavour. Both are used in Mediterranean and Middle East cuisines. Oregano is often used in potpourris. Thyme also has a unique perfume, and lemon thyme is becoming very popular because of its wonderful flavouring in soups and sauces, especially in Italian dishes. Thyme will also enhance the flavour of fish, poultry and pork. BRIAN MINTER

A

long with the growth in our culinary diversity, there’s been quite a resurgence in the demand for fresh herbs to add new flavours and zest. They not only have delightful and useful foliage, but their fragrance and flowers can also be a welcome addition to any garden or patio. One of the key things to understand about herbs is the difference between perennial varieties that come back year after year and annual herbs that are more tender and should only be planted out in late May/early June. Perennial herbs can be harvested all year round while most annual herbs will finish in late September or early October. In the new reality of small space and balcony gardens, herbs adapt easily to both situations. They are among the easiest of plants to grow and are incredibly tolerant of neglect. Even so, they will perform and look far more beautiful with a little care and attention. I’m a big fan of growing herbs in containers, and I love to combine them with annuals or perennials. One of the first considerations, however, is the style of the container. Size does matter, and the larger the better.

are not troubled with many insect problems, except for aphids that can be easily washed off with a gentle spray of water or kept in check by a few doses of ‘Safer’s Soap’ products. Powdery mildew is always a challenging disease for herbs, especially in wet weather. I’ve found that organic ‘Defense’ is a great control. Keeping your plants a little drier, rather than too wet, and watering in the morning so the foliage is dry at night is the best way to prevent diseases and keep your herbs clean and fresh. When choosing herbs, select the varieties you know and use most frequently. Parsley, both the ‘Double Moss Curled’ and the

Basil is the most-sought-after annual herb because of its great relationship with the tomato and all its sauces. Basil should never be planted out before early June as it needs to have hot, dry weather to minimize damping off. Rosemary, with its many trailing and upright forms and captivating perfume, is one of the most beautiful of all herbs. In warmer areas, zone 6 and higher, it can stay out all winter with a little protection. A few sprigs of rosemary will lift meats, like lamb and pork, stews and stuffing to a new level. Rosemary ‘Arp’ is one of the hardiest varieties; R. ‘Roman Beauty’ is the most delicately shaped; and R. ‘Irene Renzels’ has the most delightful trailing form for hanging baskets. Cilantro (it is really coriander) has been cherished for thousands of years. For a continuous crop, you can collect its seeds as it bolts, and it reseeds easily in containers. For a fresh supply, you need to keep planting every few weeks all summer long. These are, by far, the most popular and delightful of all herbs, and it’s hard to imagine a small balcony or garden without them. Brian Minter is a master gardener, best-selling author, Order of Canada recipient and co-owner of Minter Country Garden Store

Part memoir interwoven with scientific tidbits and worldly wisdom, City Crow Stories profiles the seven birds Hunter sees most often on her thrice-daily walks. In addition to Mabel and White Wing, Hunter’s book features stories about Mr. Walker, who follows dutifully for the occasional peanut; Marvin and Mavis, a mated pair who live just outside her front door; Benjamin with the bent-back foot; and Pearl, who reminds Hunter of Vermeer’s "Girl with a Pearl Earring." Hunter’s own photography accompanies the narrative that spans 15 years of bird watching. “I want to encourage people to appreciate the nature that is right beside them right now,” Hunter says. “If we could just appreciate our bird neighbours, we’d all be better off.” Connect with the crows by spending more time outside and simply watching their antics. It’s how Hunter became familiar with her inky-winged neighbours. Her patient observation has paid off—Hunter can even tell the jet-black birds apart based on their location, behaviour, and small distinguishing features. She considers her time with the crows a privilege she didn’t enjoy before moving to Vancouver. “I grew up in an industrial place. I was bird deprived as a child,” she says. “Now, every bird seems like an incredible luxury to me.” If Hunter’s book sparks some latent crow fascination in you, she suggests you take a trip to their roost in Still Creek. “I like to go out there when I feel a bit low about something. I find that crow energy exhilarating — it’s like feeling an ocean tide.” You can preorder Hunter’s book online for shipping this month by scanning the QR code here.

VPD identify two bodies found in Winters Hotel fire

V

ancouver police have identified the two bodies found in the rubble of the Winters Hotel via DNA, authorities announced on May 18. One of the deceased is SRO resident Dennis Guay, who was reported missing on April 26 approximately two weeks after the fire. The other body was identified as Mary Garlow. The massive four-alarm fire that broke out at the Gastown SRO on April 11 also left two people injured. Officials confirmed on April 22 that the two bodies were found once the demolition of the SRO had already started. The first body

was found that day in the afternoon and the second body later on in the evening. The findings put the demolition on hold until April 25. Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS) investigators believe that the cause of the fire was accidental and caused by unattended candles in a second-floor unit. VFRS had shut off the sprinklers and issued a Notice of Violation following an earlier fire in the same building on May 8. Both victims' next-of-kin have been notified. By Maria Diment

The city's sewage system is one of the many things that connects Vancouver, actually, with 22 municipalities joined together through Metro Vancouver, sharing a system that spans from Langley Township to West Vancouver to Tsawassen (in fact, there are some in Point Roberts that want in on the system). That system has 15,000 km of pipe. While it's not a popular topic to talk about, toilet stories end up in the news often enough, from man flagging dog droppings at a Metro Vancouver park to the 13,000 poops cleaned off Vancouver streets in 2021. It's not always about the gross factor, either, there are fun or funny stories, like the flushing heard on a council meeting or Surrey's public toilet nearly being named Canada's best (a spot in Edmonton ended up winning). Here are some fun facts about that system, and some other Vancouver poop facts. It heats a Vancouver neighbourhood and powers a sculpture The False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility may have an exceedingly boring name, but it's actually a neat bit of technology. As late as the 1990s, newspapers had to print out and paste individual pieces of copy, ads and photos together onto sheets (called flats) and drive the flats to a printing press where they would be photographed and turned into printing plates. Now, ads, stories and photos can be made into press-ready pages entirely on a laptop computer and sent directly to the press using computer-to-plate technology, all of which speeds up the news-gathering pace. Now a community newspaper can cover a fire or a council meeting at 6 pm with the story and pictures in print just hours later – a process that used to take a full day or

even two. And as we move beyond print and into an increasingly digital world, remember we’ve been here for decades too. Community newspapers were also among the first websites found on the World Wide Web, as it was known in the 1990s, and have also been pioneers in using new social media platforms to distribute news to readers (community newspaper, of course, being the original social media). Today dozens of our members are using new digital tools to tell local stories, from video shows to podcasts and more. In short, innovation and adoption of new technology have been in our blood for 100 years – and will be for many more.

ne of the most popular exhibits at the Museum of Vancouver will be switched off next month. Neon Vancouver Ugly Vancouver, which includes 22 neon signs and the stories of the specialized lights in Vancouver, will end June 29, according to the museum. At one time neon signs were seen everywhere in the city. The neon signs "harken back to a time when Vancouver was the neon capital of North America. At its height, in the 1950’s, the city boasted over 19,000 neon signs – more than Las Vegas at the time," says the museum in a press release. They've seen an increase in visits to the exhibit recently, due in part to its popularity on social media after local TikTok personality Laura Reid visited. The lights aren't being permanently turned off, though. The Post, the redeveloped Canada Post building downtown, will see the lights set up there. "The Museum is proud to partner with The Post’s developer, QuadReal Property Group, in bringing these pieces of Vancouver history back into the downtown core where they will be on display in the publicly accessible areas of the building," says the museum.

The new display will be bigger and brighter with other additions coming out of the museum's collection as well. It's expected to be set up in the fall of 2023. Before they're shut off for a final time at the museum, though, there will be one last Museum of Vancouver event around the lights in late June, though a date hasn't been released. For those wanting to get a last visit in, the hours are being extended. The museum's hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. By Brendan Kergin

he building at 340 Cambie Street has had many names over the years. Its life started in 1898 as the Commercial Hotel when this corner of the city was a magnet for the riches of the Klondike Gold Rush. In the 1970s it was transformed into the El Cid, boasting crushed velvet wallpaper and heart-shaped waterbeds. Today it has a heritage designation due to some of its Richardsonian Romanesque architectural features, although it's a run-down SRO hotel. Sandwiched in between the hotel and the massive Flack Block is Vancouver’s smallest building, known only as Rose Brothers Barbers, after one of its tenants over its 125-year-old life.

Cougar sighting turned out to be giant pet cat

C

ougar, cheetah or jaguar? None! Vancouver police shared that a cougar sighting had been reported in Shaughnessy last week. After a closer look, the cougar turned out to be a Savannah Cat – a large house cat whose appearance resembles a jaguar or cheetah. Conservation Officers worked with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) to round up the kitty, which had just been out on a stroll, and returned it to its owner. "I'm really glad no one shot it," replied user @DwntwonDebBrown on Twitter. "They're beautiful cats but sometimes it's shoot first ask questions after. I heard of a pet husky or malamute getting shot when someone thought it was a wolf!!" The VPD tells Vancouver Is Awesome in an email that this is the first time they've heard of a pet being mistaken for wildlife.

POO FACTS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 other common furry pet in Vancouver shouldn't be sent the same way. "Cat feces can contain a parasite Toxoplasma gondii linked to the disease toxoplasmosis. It is unsafe for people, especially pregnant women," says Metro Vancouver. Unfortunately, that means the only safe way to dispose of cat poops is in a bag in the garbage, says the regional government. Meet Pee and Poo For a hot minute, Vancouver caught the national news cycle for two new mascots. Metro Vancouver, in an effort to remind people about what can and can't be flushed, created the Pee and Poo characters a few years ago. Since their website only lists three things that can be flushed (the two aforementioned materials and toilet paper make up the rather gross trio), they were limited as to who those characters could be, it seems. Public toilet performance art Leaving the sewage system for a minute to visit a more creative pastime, now's a good time to remember the local artist who spent a week in Vancouver's public washrooms in the name of art. In 2001 Sarah White performed Expect Delays: Monologues for Public/Private Spaces as part of the Expect Delays exhibition. Globe and Mail journalist Alexandra Gill offered a description of the piece. "Imagine you are sitting in a public washroom, tending to your private business, when a woman in the adjacent stall suddenly shatters the awkward silence by launching into a chatty monologue about the unwritten rules of proper decorum that normally govern shared spaces," she wrote in advance of the 2003 show. Oddly enough it doesn't appear there's an archive of this piece being performed. False Creek gets a raw deal False Creek may not have the grossest water in the Pacific Ocean, but it's certainly not a popular swimming hole. That's in part due to what's seeped into it. For one, there are many reports of raw sewage being dumped by boaters living there. While there are public free mobile pump-out services, it doesn't seem to have completely solved that issue. At the same time the city's own system contributes on occasion. A report of activities in 2017 noted 674,000 cubic metres of raw sewage and runoff drained into False Creek at one overflow point. EVERY TICKET CHANGES A LIFE

They’re there when you need them… now it’s your turn to be there for them.

BC’s Hometown Heroes come to the aid of people in life-threatening situations every day. From rescue to recovery, BC’s front line workers and first responders – our fire fighters, along with the doctors, nurses and health care teams at Vancouver General Hospital – are always on duty for critically ill and severely injured British Columbians. When you need help, these heroes respond. Your Hometown Heroes Lottery ticket purchases support VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, raising essential funds for specialized adult health services and research at VGH and UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and Vancouver Community Health Services for all British Columbians. Ticket purchases also support programs of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, including burn survivor support services and resiliency programs for fire fighters.

Thank you for purchasing your Hometown Heroes Lottery tickets.
