Vancouver Canadians: Eugene? More like 'Boooooo-gene!'

S

EUGENE EMERALDS/MILB

ee what I did there? You won’t get a headline like that in the sports section of your major media outlets. The lights were off at Nat Bailey Stadium for another week as The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Troupe headed out on the road once again. It was wet and wild the previous week in the home series against Spokane, with a couple of rainouts getting in the way of the action and futzing with the schedule. The C’s found some drier weather down south. As is my custom, and my want, I have prepared a nifty little series preview for the current homestand against the Eugene Emeralds. Our beloved home team has returned to the (sometimes) swampy confines of The Nat this week. Dates: June 14 - 19

Visiting team: I mean, I kind of gave this part away already with my clever and pithy headline, but the C’s are playing the Eugene Emeralds. As of writing, they have taken over first place in the standings from Spokane. Major League Team: The Eugene Emeralds are a minor league affiliate for the San Francisco Giants. What happened last time: The last game we faced Eugene before this series they beat us 10-nothing. I don’t know about you, but a side of Revenge would taste pretty good with my footlong hot dog. Also mustard. 3 Facts: In an effort to better understand our enemies, here are three facts about the city of Eugene and their baseball squad. It’s the birthplace of the small, mom & pop running shoe company known as The Nike Corporation. It was in Eugene that founder Bill Bowerman poured melted rubber on his

waffle iron (or whatever the story is) forever changing everyone’s sneaker game. Eugene is home to the University of Oregon, which uses Donald Duck as its mascot. Truly, Disney’s weirdest, pantlessest, and most unhinged character. The Emeralds have worn the ugliest jerseys I’ve ever seen in Minor League Ball. Seriously. Feast your eyes on those tie dyed monstrosities. All I can think about when I look at these jerseys is the lettuce that’s slowly wilting in my fridge. I like tie-dying as a concept, but throw some other colours into the mix, darn it! Special events: This series features a fireworks extravaganza on the 18th, a father’s day hat giveaway on the 19th and one of my favourite days of the entire baseball season: The Annual Dog Day of Summer at the Nat.

If you are unfamiliar with Dog Day, it’s pretty simple: It’s the one day where all dogs (and their owners) are invited to the ballpark. You better believe I’m working on a special feature about this joyous day that’ll be coming out next week. Opposing player to watch out for:

Marco Luciano. He’s rated as San Francisco’s top prospect on MLB.com as well as number 8 in the MLB’s top 100 Prospect rankings. Now, I am #notascout, but, in my uninformed opinion: that makes him a pretty good player. So that’s that. Another series preview in the books. See you all at the Nat this week. Come and say hi! I’ll be the loudmouth behind home plate making fun of any and all tie-dyed jerseys. By Ryan Beil

Historic photo shows downtown core over 130 years ago

T

he intersection of West Hastings and Seymour streets in Vancouver is a place of huge buildings. The Harbour Centre dominates the four corners, and other towering buildings surround the area. If you look northeast, it's just solid city, full of concrete and glass. Over 130 years ago, when the city of Vancouver was founded, that wasn't the case. And while that's not a surprise, what may be a surprise is how far the city was from where it is now. This photo shows the land being cleared at that same intersection. At the time the town hadn't moved east from Gastown yet, and so the only nearby 'structure' is what appears to be a canvas tent. The rest of the foreground is dirt or the last remnants of the forest that stood before the city. While the photo is dated 1886, the exact date is unknown in the City of Vancouver archives. However, it appears it was likely shot in the first half of 1886, as the Great Fire swept through the town on June 13. In the background of this photo the town can be seen, with dozens and dozens of wooden structures. As the fire ripped through the townsite leveling almost all the buildings, it's likely this photo was taken before the devastation. It could be from after, as they did rebuild the town fairly quickly, but the fire would have also destroyed the trees and wood lying around the area. In fact, this photo shows the activity that led to the Great Fire of 1886. People were trying to clear land for the settler city to grow, and fire was the best tool they had for getting rid of what they considered waste wood, but it got out of control and destroyed the city in under an hour. o you ever get upset about the condition of green space in the city? The City of Vancouver has been facing a number of complaints on Twitter over 'much-needed haircuts' for the city's greenery. Residents didn't shy away from sharing photos of bushy lawns and grassy patches around Vancouver, calling out the city for poor lawn maintenance. Despite heated tweets, the city has no intention of trimming the blades. What appears as unkempt patches of grass are actually called urban meadows and have been strategically spread throughout the city. These green spaces are meant to diversify the landscape and support native flora and fauna, according to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. This year, the park board has widened the scope of these meadows to include "roadside meadows," which are grassy patches along road boulevards. Though they aren't mowed, the meadows are regularly maintained and cleaned of needles and other debris. As for risks of fire hazards, meadows would be mowed down if the risk becomes too

severe (such as during 2021's heat dome). "We have grown these meadows regularly since 2020 and we are seeing that as meadows age, they diversify and more wildflower species begin to appear," the park board writes in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. Over time, these meadows have also attracted a greater diversity of bees, including rare native species, that are unseen in similar parks with traditional lawns. Park board data shows the meadows were 1.2 degrees cooler than lawns and contained 20 to 30 per cent more moisture within the soil. Mowed or not, the grass is green. By Maria Diment

rack open a cold one in public this summer! Vancouver city council was unanimous in wanting to continue to provide public drinking spaces after successfully running six sites last year. Now, as of this summer, the Drinking in Public Plazas Program will become a permanent seasonal program. Vancouverites can responsibly drink booze in public this summer, but only at six select spots. For those who prefer boozy picnics, council also approved drinking at 22 public parks.

From now until October 16 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, Vancouverites can bring and drink booze at several plazas around the city. he first three rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs were wildly unpredictable, with all sorts of surprising results, including six series that went to seven games. The final two teams remaining in the Stanley Cup Final, however, are not the least bit surprising. In fact, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche were the odds-on favourites to win the Stanley Cup before the season even started according to multiple sportsbooks. There are no underdogs in this match-up, no Cinderella story to be had. These are two juggernauts. It’s the back-to-back, defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning against the best in the west Avalanche. The Avalanche cruised through series sweeps of the Nashville Predators and Edmonton Oilers en route to the Final. The Lightning, though they had to go seven games against the Toronto Maple Leafs, had a sweep of their own, sending the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Florida Panthers home in just four games. For the Vancouver Canucks, these two Cup finalists represent exactly what they should be aiming for — consistent, sustained success. It’s not just that the Lightning and Avalanche were great teams this season. They were. The Lightning finished the season with 110 points despite missing Nikita Kucherov for half of the season. The Avalanche were even better, leading the Western Conference with a 56-19-7 record for 119 points. But, more importantly, both teams have been good for

Canucks to emulate years, giving themselves multiple cracks at winning the Stanley Cup. The Lightning have missed the playoffs just once in the last nine seasons and then only missed by one point. This is their fourth Stanley Cup Finals appearance in those nine seasons and they also won a Presidents’ Trophy along the way. At this point, they’re approaching dynasty status. That success has come from a variety of factors, such as their excellence at the draft table outside the first round, fantastic prospect development, and savvy trades to both shed cap space and fill in gaps in their lineup. The drafting and development has kept them supplied with quality young players to keep them rolling, while their willingness to move on from quality players in trades has helped them navigate a complicated cap situation. The Avalanche haven’t been thriving quite as long as the Lightning but they’ve been one of the best teams in the NHL for the last three seasons and have made the playoffs in five straight. Before that success, however, the Avalanche were in a very similar place to the current Canucks — struggling despite a talented young core. To turn things around, they

made drastic moves. They identified their core players and moved on from literally everyone else, including Matt Duchene, who was traded for a significant return. That trade and several other deals allowed for some shortterm pain in order to set the Avalanche up for the future. This could be the first of several Stanley Cup Finals for the Avalanche because of that focus on long-term, sustained success. That needs to be the goal for the Canucks — not just sneaking into the playoffs and hoping for the best but instead creating a juggernaut team of the caliber of the Lightning and Avalanche to get as many playoff opportunities as possible. That might mean biting the bullet on a major trade the same way the Avalanche did with Duchene. The obvious candidate is J.T. Miller, who has been outstanding the past three seasons but might be the right player at the wrong time for the Canucks. A bold trade combined with proper prospect development like the Lightning will hopefully lead to the Canucks following the Lightning and Avalanche into multiple appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals.

51-years-overdue library book returned days

U

sually, when people think about a late return at a library it's a day or two late, maybe a whole seven days if one forgot they still had the book. The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) just had one returned 18,675 days late (give or take a day). The book, titled The Telescope, was loaned

out over a half-century ago; it was due back on April 20, 1971. On Tuesday, June 7 the VPL posted a photo on Instagram, noting the book had just made its way back into the system. It came with a note, too. "From your library," reads the post-it. "Very sorry it's a bit late." "51 years."

They also note the book is still in good condition. Given that it was supposed to be returned April 20, 1971, there are a few things that maybe distracted whoever took it out; maybe it was the launch of the first space station (Russia's Salyut 1 launched April 19), the first broadcast of America's National Public

Radio (NPR first broadcast on the 20th), or the Charles Manson sentencing. Since it left the library, Justin Trudeau was born and became Prime Minister, Matt Good was born and became a rockstar, and Ryan Reynolds was born and slowly began to take over the world. At the time the Canucks had just finished their first season as an NHL

whoever returned the book. On the inside page a stamp cautions people that as of 1963 overdue fines are $.05 per day. Even without any type of interest, that late fee would be more than $930. "With our recent removal of late fees… they won’t get charged a cent for their late return!" notes the library in the post. By Brendan Kergin

Many of the organization’s vital community-based services, from mental health programming and resources to meal programs and employment services are maintained through the help of donations from the Coast Mental Health Foundation. Coast Mental Health’s team consists of approximately 800 employees across Greater Vancouver. Their dedicated network of volunteers serve an integral role in the organization’s operations, from the strategic direction of the volunteer Board of Directors to the 170+ volunteers who assist clients in daily programming initiatives. With the ongoing support of Coast Mental Health’s partners and people, the non-profit can continue to provide crucial community-based services through three pillars of support: Housing, Support services, and Employment & Education.

For Coast Mental Health, assisting individuals in all areas of their lives—personal, vocational, social, residential, and education is the best route to encouraging a sustained recovery process and improving one’s quality of life.
