W & A Farms – End of an Era To the community and our valued customers: After over 50 years of operating here in Richmond, we have decided it is time to retire and move on to the next chapter of our lives. We have sold our farm and our doors will be closing on July 15, 2022. We want to thank everyone who has visited our farm over the years for all the support you have shown us. We have created many memories on the farm raising our family and operating our business. We will cherish the friendships we have made with our customers and employees along the way. We may be retiring but Bill will continue to play an integral role in the agricultural community as a member of the many organizations he works with. We couldn’t close our doors without one last chance to say goodbye to all of our friends and customers - so make sure to come by the farm for one last strawberry season. Thank you for all the support you have shown our family over these many years. Very Sincerely, Bill, Sandra, Angela & Will Zylmans

B
efore the pandemic, Michael Soganic decided he needed an indoor hobby. At the time, he was working in health-care software and started down a common path; he made model airplanes, some tanks. They were the usual builds you find in the hobby section and eventually got
repetitive. Somewhere along the way he got more and more interested in localizing his work. Having grown up on Vancouver Island and moved to Vancouver, he's well versed in the local sights, calling himself "obsessed" with the "big city" while growing up. "I liked the idea of making things
around me," he tells Vancouver Is Awesome. "I've slowly been doing that." With COVID-19 offering everyone a chance to stay inside, his miniatures really began to take form with some big projects, most notably a city block that has become a showpiece of sorts for Soganic. "I'm trying to cram as much
Vancouver references into a onefoot-by-one-foot space," he says. The block isn't representative of any one block in Vancouver; it's an amalgamation of how Soganic sees the city. And instead of huge glass and concrete highrises from the city's downtown skyline, he's gone with the neighbourhoods people live in. That means the (now-
closed) Little Mountain Gallery, Vernon Drive grocery store and a Vancouver Special — "they have an ugly beauty to them" — all sit on a block above a SkyTrain station. "There's the Paris Cafe," he adds. "And then there's the hobby shop CONTINUES ON PAGE 5

side in Kerrisdale, they're where I get most of my hobby supplies; I spend half my pay cheque there so I figured it deserved an honour on the diagram." The block goes beyond a few recognizable storefronts, with posters, ads and vehicles from around the city. The advertising is a particular passion for Soganic, who went to a famous source for inspiration. "A lot of ads are straight-up cropped out of Fred Herzog photos," he says. "I think Herzog perfectly captured the '60s era of Vancouver and I wanted to replicate that." Along with the huge, and hugely detailed, city block, Soganic has done other, smaller pieces. He just finished a tiny Earnest Ice Cream truck, he's got local municipal vehicles, and there's a SeaBus being taken down by a Kraken. There's also a huge piece representing the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, with a train, water bomber, and helicopter in a scene familiar to visitors of Duncan's Forest Discovery Centre. f you've driven anywhere in Vancouver this week you've no doubt noticed the impact of the small-but-vocal Save Old Growth protest group who have once again decided to snarl traffic to bring attention to their cause. What you may not have noticed was that they've spray painted buildings up and down Main Street, most notably the recentlyrefurbished heritage property, the Heritage Hall at 15th Avenue. The words "Save Old Growth" showed up on a few of the outer stone walls of the building over the weekend and were gone by Monday (June 13) afternoon. However, in that short span of time, they were a public symbol of the lengths that this group will go in order to drive people away from supporting them. The most obvious (and common) way they've alienated the general public is the aforementioned traffic-snarling. Aside from ticking off anyone who needs to go somewhere in Vancouver, perhaps the worst result of this action is that they're ensuring far more carbon is being emitted due to tens of thousands of cars idling on our freeways and bridges while the police figure out how to remove the protesters who have glued themselves to these surfaces. You may also recall how they recently littered Main Street (literally) with hundreds of paper flyers which blew around the roadway and sidewalks. A representative from the Heritage Hall tells me that the message they'd like to send to any group looking to tag
their building to further their cause is "No thank you," and that the chemicals used by their vendor, Goodbye Graffiti, are "hard on the stone," of the 106-year-old building which is currently operated by a non-profit society. The Save Old Growth group did not respond to my request for comment in which I sent them a few questions including, "How does placing graffiti on a heritage building help you achieve your goal?" They also did not respond to: "Collectively, how stupid are the members of your group on a scale from 1 to Really Stupid?" And, lastly, nobody from the Save Old Growth group provided an answer to my question "Are you not concerned that actions like this will further alienate the population that you are already inconveniencing with your other actions? The net result of many of your strategies seems to be counter to what you might want to achieve, which I imagine is getting more people involved in your movement as opposed to having the wider population view you as a bunch of dim-witted goons who have run out of ideas." s that French?" isn't just what you ask your sommelier about what's pouring. It's the name of a new wine bar that has just opened up in Vancouver. Taking over the small Gastown space that had been home to Salt Tasting Room for 15 years, Is That French is a new wine and raw bar operation
focused on the Pacific Northwest. To that end, you'll find beautiful B.C. wines here, such as ones from Joue (Averill Creek in Duncan's edgier line) and Lightning Rock out of Summerland. Small plates on the seasonally-informed menu include offerings like a wild pacific snapper tiradito, a smoked heirloom tomato
salad, or cognac pate with rhubarb. The name is also a bit of a nod to the owners' family tree. A black-and-white image shared on Instagram shows a couple outside Café Francais in StHyacinthe, Quebec, and the caption reads: "My grandparents in front of my grandfather['s] first restaurant circa 1946. He was 25 years old and borrowed
5k from his father. Taking risks runs in the family. I wish he could still be there to witness his legacy, try my food and have a glass of wine. Is That French?" The wine bar's location fronts on Blood Alley Square. The space is just over 1,260 square feet and capacity is capped at 51 seats, according to a previous real estate listing for the "rare, one-of-a-kind, space on the cobblestone-lined streets of Gastown." The venue also boasts a downstairs cellar which Is That French has made private, with the hint that some special events may involve that space in the future. "It has sure been a wild ride setting up this venue but we are finally ready to share our passion for food, wine & people with you all," shared Is That French on Instagram. Is That French officially opened its doors on June 9, and operates Thursday to Tuesday from 5 p.m. to late. Follow @isthatfrench_winebar on Instagram. By Lindsay William-Ross

Man banned from new urban park
V
ancouver Police announced last week that a man has been banned from the new Vancouver City Park. The individual, 26-year-old Christopher Grahn, reportedly threatened parents and brought weapons into the park on Sunday, June 12. Parents eventually called the VPD after they asked him to stop using drugs in the park. He was charged with uttering threats, possession of stolen property, and possession of a weapon. Grahn's ban from the Yaletown park is a condition of his release on bail. The urban park opened in April at Smithe and Richards. By Allie Turner

Letter to the editor I loved this article on the new Roadside Meadows mistaken for uncut grass. Prior to the construction of the Arbutus Greenway I used to walk the dog along the rail tracks, on a bed of gravel surrounded by blackberry bush. Signs were erected along the tracks between 37th Avenue and King Edward (purportedly home of the crème de la crème), saying Save Arbutus Meadows. I guess what constitutes meadows is in the eye of the beholder! Sure nice to see the Greenway so well used.

Vancouver 'Jeopardy!' contestant spills on what it was like to be on the iconic game show buzzer isn't as simple as yelling at your TV from the couch. "My inability to get the rhythm of the buzzer really hurt me—there is absolutely skill in timing it perfectly," Matsuzaki says. That unexpected element made it tough for her to show off all her knowledge, but Matsuzaki kept with it. Daily box scores show her 19 attempts to be the first to the buzzer during Double Jeopardy, only three fewer tries than opponent and winner Eric Ahasic. "My advice for future contestants is to spend a lot of time working on hand-eye coordination and response time. That was something I did not know." Still, there's plenty more Matsuzaki does know. She got Final Jeopardy correct, an American history question nonetheless! "That felt good as a Canadian. I was proud of my performance and I left feeling like I did all I could." Ultimately she's pleased with the experience. As a competitor, Matsuzaki got to watch one weeks' worth of Jeopardy! be filmed on the same day as her episode and she was all about the behind-the-scenes action. She says all the small things nobody sees on TV—like the little hydraulic lift that contestants stand on behind the podium to even out their heights—made the magic.
WOULD YOU LIKE FREE EXERCISE? TESSA MATSUZAKI
W
hen born-and-bred Vancouverite Tessa Matsuzaki saw a January 2020 promo to take the Jeopardy! qualifying test she thought "why not?" Fifty questions, one passing grade, a few Zoom auditions, a pile of paperwork, and two-plus years later she found herself on the show's glowing set behind that iconic brown and blue podium, buzzer in hand. Matsuzaki's game show appearance aired on Wednesday, June 8, and, while she came in second, she says it was "one of the most fun experiences I've ever had." A "sponge for trivial knowledge," she prepared by reading old clues from the Jeopardy! archive and memorizing things she knew she would struggle with (see: U.S. presidents). Finding hints hidden within the clues, paying attention to current events, and identifying patterns in popular categories also helped. "Once I knew it might happen, part of my brain was always thinking 'should I retain this?'" she says. "Some of it is about knowing random stuff about random things." Languages or geography are her selfprofessed strengths, including anything and everything about Canada. "Those are always easy by Canadian standards," Matsuzaki says. Bested by the buzzer on a B.C.-based question Unfortunately, she missed the only B.C.-based question during her taping, but not for lack of knowledge or trying. Turns out hitting that all-important
Now she's back home and the secret is out (she had to stay tight-lipped about the results for nearly three months) she's relieved by all the positive responses. "Everyone has been so kind about it—I was nervous that people would say 'wow, you lost,' but that hasn't been the case." When she's not starring on Jeopardy!, Matsuzaki works as a freelance graphic designer and raises puppies as a volunteer at Pacific Assistance Dogs Society. She's stayed in touch with some fellow contestants and plans to use some of her winnings for a group get-together. Best of all, rumours of a second chance competition for past Jeopardy! contestants already have her excited for a possible repeat appearance. "I'll throw my hat in the ring for that! I would absolutely love to do it again," she says. By Mae Folsom Jacobson

5 things you (probably) didn't know about Vancouver's fire department
F
irefighting has long been an important part of Vancouver. Just months after the city was founded the Great Vancouver Fire ripped through the city, killing at least 21 people. At the time the city only had a volunteer-run fire service and a single horse-drawn buggy, but the fire encouraged the city to take greater action. The first fire engine was bought by the city a week later. Nowadays the Vancouver Fire Rescue Service (VFRS) is a well-trained crew of professionals prepared to rescue people from burning buildings, deal with medical emergencies and more. Here are five things you probably didn't know about those crews and their history.
one of the first-ever) motorized fire engines in 1908; in short order the department was ranked third worldwide. In less than a decade fire departments' horses were put out to pasture as all halls were fully motorized. That actually led to successful strike action by the Vancouver firefighters union (the first union of its kind in Canada) and firefighters were allowed one day off in four. The union went on to be one of the founding (and only Canadian) members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). The mechanized fleet had 23 vehicles. 2. It'll be one of the first cities in the world with an electric fire truck Expected later this year (entering service in 2023), Vancouver is getting a Rosenbauer RT, equipment a far cry from the steampropelled vehicles being used 110 years ago. So far only a couple have been made; Berlin, Amsterdam and Dubai each have one, and Los Angeles is getting theirs going now. Along with its electric powertrain, it has a variety of other features firefighters are excited for, including
1. It was probably the first mechanized in North America It's believed the Vancouver Fire Department, as it was known at the time, was the first motorized fire department in Canada, and probably North America says VFRS spokesperson Matthew Trudeau (though he notes there aren't any formal stats from the time). The city purchased its first (and
improved handling (it's got fourwheel steering, which means it can move diagonally), improved speed, and no diesel fumes (which is bad for firefighters health). It also has a feature that allows it to lower itself; a common injury for firefighters is a twisted ankle while exiting a firetruck. 3. Vancouver has the two busiest fire halls in Canada While it might not be a surprise that Vancouver would have the busiest fire hall in Canada, it actually has the top two. They're fire halls No. 8 (at Hamilton and Smithe) and No. 2 (at Powell and Main). To that end, Vancouver firefighters
are 2 to 2.5 times busier than the average Canadian firefighter. 4. Fires have gone up 91 per cent in just a few years While medical calls certainly play a big role in keeping Vancouver fire crews busy, the number of fires they're responding to are growing as much as anything. "There are simply more fires causing damage than there were 6 years ago. We have almost 10 fires a day in Vancouver that cause damage," says Trudeau in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. 5. A Coast Guard dock and two boats burned while the city was without a fireboat
Thanks to fighting between the City of Vancouver and other municipalities, and despite decades of fire boats patrolling the shore, there were a few years with no Vancouver fireboats. An unusual situation for a city the size of Vancouver with plenty of waterfront. Vancouver actually sold a working fireboat to San Francisco in 1989. It didn't take long for that decision to look bad. The dispute ended when the Coast Guard base in Kitsilano had a devastating fire, and there were no nearby fireboats to tackle it. This U. broadcast from 1991 shows the fire. Bonus: Canada's first and maybe only library/fire hall Vancouver may be the only city in the country, perhaps further, with a library and fire hall combined. Firehall 4 and the Firehall branch of the Vancouver Public Library share a building in Fairview on West 10 Avenue. Both are public institutions, but as fire halls can be loud places with fast-moving vehicles and libraries tend not to be either of those things it's a combination we can't find other examples of. HEY KIDS! “MYSTERY ISLAND”
SIDDOO, Gurbax Kaur Singh December 12,1935 - June 18, 2022 With heavy hearts we announce the passing of the Matriarch of the North Vancouver Siddoo Clan: “Gurbax Kaur Singh Siddoo (nee Mann)” AKA Sheila
Predeceased by husband Gulzar S. Siddoo, son Norman. Survived by her 7 children; Paul, Pirminda, Sarge, Kore (Gurmeet), Terra Paul, Dave and Munglejeet, and all their families. She has 13 grandchilren, 13 great grandchildren. Born in Punjab, India, she arrived in Vancouver, BC, March 1, 1956.
Raising her 8 boisterous children on the North Shore and having a fulfilling career at LGH. She will be fondly remembered for following a strict disciplined routine, her cheeky sense of humour and quick wit. She loved to serve her community doing Seva volunteering at The Akali Sikh Temple, Salvation Army and Silver Harbour Senior Centre. She loved going for long walks and hikes and was particularly fond of traveling, visiting many countries and going on cruises. In 2007, she suffered a devastating stroke, despite her health setbacks, she managed to live an enriched life due to her persistent faith in GOD and Chardi Kala (positive) attitude. She continued to live at home with the aid of her “angels” (caregivers). She looked forward to monthly lunches out with her family, and when sunny and warm she loved to picnic in local parks. She lived life fully. We also would like to thank her doctors; Dr. Tak Bourchier and Dr. Asef G. Javan for the excellent medical care provided through the latter years of her life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are Thursday, June 23, 2022, at 1:00pm at Riverside Funeral Home 7410 Hopcott Rd, Delta, BC., (604-940-1313)
