Opinion: 5 reasons why you should love baseball

o Vancouver Canadians series preview this week as Spokane rolls back into town and we’ve already talked about those rascals! Instead, I wanted to ruminate a bit on baseball itself. A lot of people don’t like baseball. Those people are wrong and have difficulty experiencing joy. Generally speaking, of course. Baseball is my favourite sport. It’s one of the great loves of my life. Right up there with “crepes on a Sunday morning” and “accumulating debt through credit card usage.” It’s one of my passions. And I want everyone I meet to love it, too. In case you didn’t know, another glorious and sacred season of baseball is upon us and it’s actually being played at Nat Bailey Stadium. The 2020 season was cancelled and 2021 had to be played in Hillsboro, Oregon for pandemicrelated reasons. But baseball is back at our beautiful bandbox of a ballpark nestled between Ontario Street and Midlothian Avenue. If you’re on the fence about the sport and are unsure if it’s for you, I am happy to provide a little list of some of my favourite things about baseball to hopefully push you off that fence. But in a nice way, that won’t injure you.
make me anxious. A baseball game, in theory, could last forever. There’s no buzzer to tell you when it’s over. The game itself will decide when it’s done. 2. Pockets Ballplayers carry around so much stuff in their pockets. I find it fascinating. Whether it’s sunflower seeds, laminated pieces of paper or those weird oven mitts they put on when they run the bases, they really utilize those pockets, man. I can’t think of another sport where it would be feasible to play with a cell phone on your person.

3. Getting mad at umpires Do you hate authority? Do you love finding a common enemy? Then look no further than the ominous and tyrannical baseball umpire. Whether they’re blowing a call or barking out your favourite player, getting upset with/at them can be exhilarating and maybe even a little cathartic. But please remember: They are human and mistakes happen, so don’t cut too deep.

5 things you (probably) didn't know about Marpole
L
et's be honest, Marpole is not the most famous or visited of Vancouver neighbourhoods. Located at the southern end of Granville Street, it's a mix of residential space, commercial areas on main roads and an industrial waterfront. In recent years there's been significant growth, but many still know it as the place where you take a bridge over to Richmond. However, while to some it may be an afterthought, that neighbourhood has seen human habitation for thousands of years, and even in the early days of Vancouver it had a booming and vibrant economy that receded thanks to those bridges. So here are some things you (probably) didn't know about Marpole.
1. There used to be a huge Musqueam village named cəsna?əm there The village of c̓əsna?əm stood on the north arm of the Fraser River in the Marpole area for thousands of years by the Coast Salish people. While many have heard of the Marpole Midden, that's a shadow of what was once there. The village was the largest settlement for the Musqueam and one of the largest pre-contact middens on the Pacific Coast of Canada. In the 1880s the midden was 'discovered' by people building roads in the area and archaeologists began to study the area; many of them took what they found (including human remains).
Just off shore of Marpole is the Fraser River; these days there's no land masses in the water until you're on Sea Island. However, the north arm of the Fraser River used to have a few islands in it. In a video by the City of Vancouver they were called Cowans Island and Stewart Island, and it's noted that they were essentially absorbed by Marpole as the industrial activities grew. In old maps of the area islands are marked, but aren't named.
While the site was recognized as a national historic site in 1933, it wasn't protected and the area was developed, including the Fraser Arms Hotel. In 2011 a new development project was proposed, and in the process more remains were discovered. For 200 days Musqueam members held a vigil at the site. The Musqueam have continued to acquire unceded land in the area that was once c̓əsnaʔəm. 2. It wasn't originally called Marpole When settlers arrived in the area in the 1800s, specifically the 1860s, the area wasn't called Marpole, but Eburne. The small town was miles away from the communities of Gastown

and New Westminster, and remained that way for decades, though there was development, as rail began to permeate the area. An Eburne station was built and the area was called that until 1916, when it was renamed after Richard Marpole the General Superintendent for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Vancouver. It was also part of two other municipalities before Vancouver, covered by South Vancouver when it was founded, and then included in the break away Point Grey in 1908. 3. It used to have some islands
5. Celebrating failure Baseball is a sport where if you get a hit 3 out of every 10 at-bats, you are considered an excellent hitter. Elite, even. It’s a game of constant failure and adjustments. In a world that pushes
4. Vancouver's "legendary" White Spot started there Nat Bailey got his start in the restaurant industry by selling food out of the back of his 1918 Ford, but his first brick-and-mortar restaurant was in Marpole. On June 16, 1928 the White Spot Barbeque opened at West 67th Avenue and Granville Street, near where the Red Star Seafood Restaurant is now. 5. Ebisu Park is named after a Japanese god While Vancouver has many, many parks named after lots of different things, Ebisu Park in Marpole is unique in that it's named after the Japanese god of fishermen, working men and the protector of young children. He's also the god of luck. The city named the park after Ebisu in honour of the Japanese community that once lived in Marpole. By Brendan Kergin

Cold Case Files: The unsolved murder of nurse Myrna Inglis
VANCOUVER SUN SEPT 15, 1969
O
n September 9, 1969, 26-yearold Myrna Louise Inglis finished her shift at St. Paul’s Hospital. It was shortly after midnight, the end of a long day, and she was tired. She changed out of her nurse’s uniform and into her street clothes. Because it was chilly, she draped her nurse’s cape around her shoulders. Myrna lived close by on Barclay Street in a West End apartment she shared with two other nurses. She said goodnight to the hospital’s security guard and headed west on Nelson
Street. Myrna had just passed Broughton Street when a young man in his early twenties stepped out of the shadows and surprised her. He was tall and thin with dark brown curly hair and wearing a brown suede jacket. He walked right up to her and said: “Don’t say anything.” Then he brought his knee up and landed a brutal blow to her stomach. As Myrna doubled over in pain, the young man stabbed her five times in her upper back and neck. Then he ran away leaving Myrna bleeding on

the sidewalk. Residents responded to her screams and Myrna was rushed back to the hospital from where she had just left and taken into surgery. One of her ribs was broken, her lungs were punctured and her spinal cord was severed. She was paralyzed but doctors expected that she would survive. Myrna’s father, a doctor in their hometown of Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast rushed over to be with her. Police looked into her background but couldn’t find anything that would warrant such a vicious assault. It appeared to be a random attack by a stranger, and that struck fear into the residents of the West End, many of whom took up self-defence lessons. Police also questioned anyone who may have seen the attack or her attacker. Myrna was also able to give a description the day after the assault—five days later she was dead. While police had a good description of Myrna’s attacker, they couldn’t figure out a motive for the attack. Was it an attempted rape or was it someone with mental health issues and Myrna was just in the wrong place at the wrong time? It was also years before DNA became part of the forensic toolkit, and it’s likely any physical evidence from the attack that could solve the murder today, has long been lost or discarded. Myrna’s funeral was held in Gibsons and was the second one for her father in less than a year: Myrna’s 16-year-old brother David had died the previous December from head injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident. If you have any information about Myrna Inglis’s attack and murder, contact the Vancouver Police Department at 604-717-3321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. ne Osoyoosbased rattlesnake has some expensive taste. The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. Support Centre Helpline was called in about a snake spotted inside the Vancouver Ferrari dealership last Thursday. A northern pacific rattlesnake managed to hitch a ride to the Lower Mainland in a Ferrari from the South Okanagan, slithering out after the car was delivered inside the dealership. In a Facebook post, the Wildlife Rescue said that they dispatched a rescue and transport volunteer who safely brought the snake to the Dewdney Animal Hospital Ltd. in Maple Ridge for an assessment. "Dr. Adrian Walton and his team discovered the snake had been microchipped for a research survey which means they know exactly where to take this snake home," they said. The rattlesnake, now named Enzo, was sporting a green line on his tail, showcasing that he is part of a snake survey in the Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre near Osoyoos. The BC Reptiles and Amphibians website states the Northern Pacific rattlesnake is “distinguished from all other B.C. snakes by 3 features; a rattle on the end of its tail, a very

distinct neck, and a broad, triangular head.” They’re a quiet and non-aggressive snake but are the only truly venomous species in the province. The Dewdney Animal Hospital created a video to share the unique journey of Enzo. "I've done a lot of things like marmots hitching rides and cars and stuff like that, but I've never done a snake before," the volunteer shared in the video. With the help of local authorities, Enzo will soon be back home to the Nk’Mip Desert, but in a much-less sporty ride. By Casey Richardson

Six new restaurants to check out this summer
Nox Nox, an upscale modern Italian spot in Coal Harbour is the project of Metro Vancouver restaurateur Alejandro Diaz and chef Sam Fabbro, who are also behind the successful New Westminster restaurant El Santo. Named in honour of "the Roman name for Nyx – the Greek goddess of the night renowned for her exceptional power and beauty," features a "West Coast take on Italian cuisine with a strong emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients." Address: 1575 W Georgia St Folke They're calling it vegetablefocused with "hospitality included pricing." Translation: Folke in Kitsilano features an allvegetarian menu and they've eliminated tipping. The new restaurant is the first-time venture for chef-owner Colin Uyeda and pastry chef-owner Pricilla Deo. On Uyeda and Deo's locally- and seasonally-driven menu are dishes meant to showcase the abundant foods grown in regional soil. The selection of small plates will change based on availability and inspiration. Gratuities are factored into the menu price, which Folke says "allows employees to achieve a healthy salary with benefits while promoting a cohesive working environment." he one constant about Vancouver's restaurant scene is that it's always changing. Doors closing one day can mean a fresh opportunity for someone else to open up the restaurant of their dreams or expand their empire. While there's a lot to be said about dining out at your favourite familiar spots, when you're in the mood to try someplace new, there's always plenty to choose from in and around Vancouver. Here are six of the freshest new restaurants in Vancouver to put on your must-try list this summer.
French is a new wine and raw bar focused on the Pacific Northwest. To that end, you'll find beautiful B.C. wines here, such as ones from Joue (Averill Creek in Duncan's edgier line) and Lightning Rock out of Summerland. Small plates on the seasonally-informed menu include offerings like a wild pacific snapper tiradito, a smoked heirloom tomato salad, or cognac pate with rhubarb. Address: 45 Blood Alley Sq Riley's Fish & Steak Vancouver's high-profile Glowbal restaurant group is polishing another feather in its local cap. The company recently debuted Riley's, its new "chophouse" concept in a prime downtown location. The menu makes the most of Riley's slogan, "West Coast Prime," by honing in on a variety of steak options with sides, as well as seafood like an epic chilled seafood tower. The restaurant also boasts an oyster-shucking station and a full bar, pouring cocktails, B.C. craft beers, and wines from B.C. and further afield by the glass or bottle. Address: 200 Burrard St Craffles You may know this Brazilian spot for waffles, crepes, and monster shakes from its original outpost in North Vancouver. Now they've added a Yaletown location, serving up their signature all-day brunch menu. Address: 518 Davie St Robba da Matti Kitsilano For its just-opened fourth location, local Italian restaurant mini-chain Robba da Matti has gotten really, really cheesy. Specifically, the newest branch of the Yaletown-born pasta-centric operation features what the restaurant touts as Vancouver's only "burrata bar." The burrata bar is on the second floor of the restaurant, while diners

C Hydro already sees a 2022 increase in electricity demand as British Columbians try to remain cool as the mercury climbs. It expects that trend to continue as climate change impacts the province. That demand has led to a change from B.C. being a winter high-user of power to being a summer one, according to a report released June 24. “As global warming accelerates, BC Hydro has seen an increase in demand for electricity in the summer months, as more British Columbians turn to AC for longer periods to cool down during heat events,” the report said. Data since 2017 indicates residential electricity demand has increased by 12 per cent from June through August, mainly due to a rise in residential air conditioning (AC) use. “Climate change has made access to AC increasingly vital as summer temperatures increase,” utility spokesperson Susie Rieder said. “BC Hydro data shows AC use increased by about 50 per cent over the past decade from a quarter of British Columbians using it at home to nearly 40 per cent, but we still see far greater
demand for electricity in the winter months.” B.C. broke 19 of 25 heat daily peak records in the summer of 2021, a summer that saw the town of Lytton burn down, multiple forest fires and more than 600 deaths related to the heat dome. “This includes breaking its all-time summer peak hourly demand record on June 28, 2021, when demand reached 8,568 megawatts, shattering the previous record by more than 600 megawatts—the equivalent of t urning on 600,000 portable air conditioners,” the report said. In a recent survey, BC Hydro found that 62 percent of British Columbians with AC said their use has increased at home in recent years, and 63 per cent used their AC for more than five hours per day last summer. One-quarter of British Columbians have purchased or upgraded an AC this year, with 72 per cent of those citing increasingly severe and frequent summer heat as their primary motivation. This summer, BC Hydro recommends various measures
to beat the heat, save energy, and stay safe: • Cooling with a heat pump: Because BC Hydro generates 98 per cent of its electricity from clean, renewable resources that are powered mainly by water, using a heat pump to cool in the summer and heat in the winter is more environmentally friendly than a system powered by gas; • Going ductless: If a central heat pump system is not an option for your home, ductless units are a great option while offering the same benefits as a central system; • Buying smart: If you are buying an air conditioner, opt for a window AC unit as opposed to portable units, as they are twice as energy-efficient; • Optimizing temperature: Cool homes to 25 degrees Celsius in the summer months when occupied, and the air conditioning should be turned off when unoccupied; • Closing the drapes and blinds: Shading windows can block out up to 65 per cent of the heat; • Using a fan: Running a fan nine hours a day over the summer costs just $7;

Local art installation could win prestigious international award the area to inspire the colourful patterns on the glass. "Knowles intuitively combined sitespecific imagery into a kaleidoscope of colours, patterns and textures -- making this arresting permanent installation a tour de force for employees, local residents and passersby," states an awards' writeup on the piece. Seven other Canadian pieces are vying for the award, and the top two vote-getters will win. The CODAawards also have categories like landscape and institutional. North Vancouver's 'Sea Change' won in the transportation category last year; it's an interactive light display at a bus exchange. Winners will be announced at the end of August.

ne of Vancouver's newest public artworks is getting international attention. Called 'Walking Spectrum', the work is made of (in the simplest of terms) coloured glass and incorporated into the entrance of the new office building at 601 West Hastings and is one of 100 up for the People’s Choice CODAaward. Created by Devon Knowles, the piece was only recently installed as the building was completed. "The jury has voted, selecting the Top 100 most successful design projects that integrate commissioned art into an interior, architectural, or public space," states CODAworx, the organization behind the awards. uilt in 1889 after the Gastown fire, The Hickey Block, at the corner of Abbott Street and Blood Alley, was originally a hotel with a saloon on the ground floor. Recently renovated, it was the home of the Montauk Sofa Company's store until the business moved locations. The building is across the street from where the Winters
Hotel stood until it was ravaged by fire in April 2022. John Bentley is an architectural photographer who has photographed the inside and outside of thousands of buildings around Vancouver. black bear was shot and killed in Burnaby June 19 after getting "dangerously close" to the public. Vancouver Police Department (VPD) spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison says, in a statement to Glacier Media, a black bear ventured into a busy residential area near the Burnaby-Vancouver border around 11 a.m. last Sunday. Police started monitoring the bear with hopes it would move to a safer place. But Addison explains officers were forced to shoot the bear after it crossed a short distance into Burnaby. The bear was going "in and out of yards," was getting too close to people and pets and was "walking in traffic," he adds. According to social media users, the bear was believed to have been shot near the intersection of Hastings Street and Boundary Road.

One person claims the bear was tracked for 15 blocks. When the bruin was first spotted, VPD notified the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) as well as animal control for assistance. Animal control staff were deployed, but they didn't arrive before police were forced to kill the bear, Addison says. By Jess Balzer

ancouver is getting a "Night Advocate." While it sounds like the most boring version of Batman possible, the job will actually work to advocate for "Vancouver's night time economy" out of the Office for Night Time Economy. The new position is being launched by the Downtown BIA, Destination Vancouver, Hospitality Vancouver Association (HVAN) and the Mayor's Office. "Vancouver has one of the fastest growing economies in Canada, and as we attract more people and businesses to our city, growing our hospitality sector is critical to building a true 24/7 city,” said Mayor Kennedy Stewart in a media release. “With The Invictus Games 2025 and now FIFA World Cup 2026 officially on the way, the new Night Office will help us to reimagine our night time economy." Work will start this fall with outreach to stakeholders, followed by recommendations to the City of Vancouver about what supports are needed to grow the night time economy. The organizations are excited to see nightlife prioritized in the city's core
and see it as a chance to follow the likes of London, New York and Amsterdam in growing economic activity between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. "We can now look forward to a permanent partnership between the City, cultural, and business communities, with the shared goal of making Vancouver nightlife more robust, inclusive, safe, and world class,” says Nate Sabine of HVAN; his organization will be managing the office. While the statement didn't get into the specifics of what is included in the night time economy, logically it would include the city's nightlife and evening entertainment in bars, restaraunts, clubs and theatres in the city's core. Recently, a report using data from Tripadvisor named Vancouver the best in the country for its nightclub; it's a title many locals didn't agree with. "This claim is so ridiculous that I may go walk into oncoming traffic," wrote @ joeljasonbrink on Vancouver Is Awesome's Instagram post about the report. "There is no bloody way this is true," added @lesletrobinsonamon. "Best satire article I've seen," wrote @phyrrus_. "Ummm for one, no one

who’s making these clubs fun is going on Tripadvisor and writing reviews about it," noted @xtinequeen. "Vancouver ranked #1 boring city in Canada for its nightclubs" is the truth," suggested @jaimelysak. Vancouver has also long held
the moniker of No Fun City, which has been applied to the city's nightlife in particular. On the other hand, local businesses operating after 6 p.m. have done well in recent rankings, even netting top restaurant in Canada. By Brendan Kergin

False Creek Ferries to bring back little dancing ships for Canada Day He says they expect to do shows near Yaletown, Granville Island, and where False Creek meets English Bay, wrapping up around 10 a.m. "The best viewing of the ballet can be enjoyed from the Burrard, Granville, and Cambie bridges, the False Creek Seawall, Sunset Beach, and the pier above the Ferry Dock on Granville Island," says the familyowned company in a press release. This year marks the 40th year of False Creek Ferries crisscrossing the stretch of water; they launched in October of 1982 with two boats running between Granville Island and the West End. Now they operate 17 vessels, stopping at nine stops all year.

hat's Canada Day in Vancouver without a little boat ballet? For years the False Creek Ferries have marked Canada's birthday on their namesake waters, synchronizing their maneuvers in moves called the "Circle of Death" and "Crossover" among others. This year they'll be back at it, after taking a year off in 2021. On July 1, those out early will get to see the aquatic performance first as the first show will take place off the seawall near Olympic Village starting at 8:30 a.m. There will be a few performances throughout the morning, says operations manager Jeremy Patterson, as the "ballerina" boats head towards English Bay.

Company pitches former spy blimp as airline between Canada and U.S.A.
As part of their pitch, HAV has suggested three example routes around the world as ideal uses for the Airlander 10; one of those routes is from Vancouver to Seattle. "Seattle to Vancouver is an important route between two cities. The options for transport between these two cities are by car, train or aeroplane. These options are either carbon-intensive or time-intensive," they note in a press release. When comparing trips from city

centre to city centre HAV notes that planes (3 hours and 6 minutes) and cars (2.5 hours) are faster, but they produce a lot more C02 per passenger (23.6 kg for car travel and 53.2 kg for plane travel). Trains are closer to the HAV airship; they estimate trips average 5 hours and 9 minutes while creating 7.8 kg of C02. The Airlander 10 would produce an estimated 4.61 kg of C02 per passenger on a 4 hour and 12 minute
trip. That's taking into account boarding times and security check-ins where applicable. "Transportation in cities is already stretched and transportation between key regional areas are served by carbon-intensive or time-intensive options. Sustainable transport inside and between

or those looking for a low carbon way to travel, would you consider a hybrid airship developed from an American military spy blimp program? That could be the new way to go between Vancouver and Seattle, according to Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV). The company has developed the Airlander 10, which is essentially a modern blimp or airship (though they never use the term blimp and rarely use airship). The 'hybrid aircraft' uses a gas-filled (helium) hull for most of its lift, though it is heavier than air, so it requires its engine and design to provide more lift. The main selling point, according to the company, is sustainability, with trips producing only a fraction of the CO2 per traveller as other methods. The prototype has been flying around Europe for a bit and production of the first commercial ships is expected in 2025 (that's only three years away).

is officially well-loved in Canada. In fact, the first Hawaiian pizza ever was created by Grecian Sam Panopoulos in Ontario in 1962. In a tangy twist, the data also reveals that pickles are rising in popularity. According to Chefs Plate, last November “pickle pizza” garnered more searches than “Hawaiian pizza.” Pickles are currently ranked ninth on the list of Canadians Top 10 Pizza Toppings. Other favourites on the list include prosciutto, pesto, chicken, spinach, mushroom and buffalo chicken.

alty pepperoni, hairy anchovies and juicy pineapple are ready for their close-up with the pizza paparazzi. These three ingredients are the three most popular pizza toppings in Canada, according to data from Chefs Plate that analyzed searches by Canadians over the last year. Pepperoni reigns supreme with a total of 3,600 searches and its salty cousin the anchovy comes in second place, with a total of 2,900 searches. With pineapple toting the bronze medal, this data proves that Hawaiian pizza

To cut down on CO2 even more, they have plans for an all electric version by 2030, essentially creating zero-emission air travel, depending on where the electricity comes from. Among the other notable things about the Airlander 10 is its ability to land on water and smaller landing space requirement than a commercial jet (it needs a relatively flat space of 600 m).

Flair Airlines. At the start of the video, she mentions that she was able to book a passport appointment in Edmonton the day before the flight. Once she was at the Service Canada passport office, she completed the process within two-and-a-half hours — considerably less time than it takes in Vancouver (if you are able to see someone the day you line up). Further, the round-trip airfare was $87, which is markedly lower than people have charged to wait in line on behalf of frustrated Vancouverites. The local blogger told Vancouver is Awesome the experience in Edmonton is "night and day compared to Vancouver" and she was "shocked" to receive her passport so quickly. "It was impossible to get it in Vancouver without camping out at 7 [p.m.] the night before or paying $300 [to $1000]," she explained, adding that she also didn't have to show proof of travel within 12 to 24 hours as you do in Metro Vancouver offices. "They are still busy I’d say but the security staff there and passport staff were so friendly," she added. Whitney said she stayed with relatives in Edmonton, so she didn't have to book accommodation or worry about timing for

flights. Passport Canada: Long passport office wait times Scores of Metro Vancouverites have shared horror stories about their experiences attempting to obtain passports ahead of upcoming travel. In early May, advertisements for "passport line holders" started popping up in online forums such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist Vancouver, and via personal websites. One of the most striking listings was asking a whopping $800 for an overnight waiting service at Sinclair Centre in downtown Vancouver. The federal government has added a new feature that allows people to check the wait times at Service Canada offices across the country. A note on the page reads: "We’re working to deliver passports as quickly as we can. Due to high volumes, processing times are longer than usual." Service Canada processed nearly 1.3 million passports between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022 — a sharp increase from the roughly 360,000 passports processed over the previous fiscal year.
