runch lovers seeking some smoke, spice, and Southern vibes will want to check out the fired-up new weekend daytime menu. Loaded with hearty takes on brunch staples that draw inspiration from breakfast-y faves and the big flavours of Texas-style BBQ, Slim's - a year-old option on Main Street - is definitely kicking up weekend eats a notch. Known for its right-from-the-smoker BBQ dishes, playful sides, and cocktails by the pitcher, Slim's is using its recently-launched brunch menu to further echo the restaurant's food flexibility. A very cool feature is that Slim's has vegetarian or fully vegan brunch dishes (much like how they've grown the regular menu to do the same) and the kitchen also has dedicated cooking space for gluten-free items, which makes the Mount Pleasant spot a great place to dine when you've got omnivores alongside folks who prefer plant-based or have other dietary restrictions. But when it comes to the meaty stuff, Slim's really delivers. They use meats from B.C. suppliers like 63 Acres and Rossdown Farms, with the high-quality cuts applied to things like their sweet and tangy pulled pork or a crunch fried chicken and waffles. The pulled pork is the star of the show when it comes to Slim's Southern

Cornbread N' Eggs; this is ostensibly a Benny featuring cornbread stacked with saucy pulled pork, poached eggs and queso sauce. It comes with super crispy and fluffy tots, which is basically a brunch dream come true. Add on a Smoky BBQ Caesar, a little breeze (and delightful chaos) thanks to the big open windows facing the intersection where Main and Kingsway meet, and you have an excellent weekend on the go. For the non-meat-eaters, however, you're well served with Slim's Austinstyle breakfast tacos or their chilaquiles, both featuring a plant-based egg substitute. And if you'd prefer to skip
the pork on that wicked good cornbread Benny, you can make the dish vegetarian by subbing in Slim's BBQ jackfruit. To entice early risers, Slim's also has a few noteworthy Brunch "Happy Hour" menu options. From 10 a.m. to noon your bottomless Kafka's coffee is just $2, a one-ounce Pickleback is $4, and Mimosas are $6. For Brunch Happy Hour eats, they've discounted their vegetarian hash. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Slim's BBQ is located at 2301 Main St in Vancouver.

Opinion: The Wave is an abomination and should be banned at The Nat
O
kay, so, maybe that headline is a tad harsh and over-dramatic. But, I cannot escape how I feel about The Wave. I do not like The Wave. I have never liked The Wave. It has haunted me, tormented me and chased me for decades. The time has come for me to stand against it. Boldly. Bravely. Defiantly. For, dear reader, I am the hero you need. Or, something like that. If you are confused as to what The Wave even is, allow me to explain. Also: congratulations on waking from the coma you have apparently been in since the early 80s. The Wave is actually an example of metachronal rhythm (you’re welcome for the physics lesson) that occurs in a crowded sporting venue, usually at the behest of a bleacher-tyrant who has imbibed one too many over priced libations. The first recorded The Wave is purported to have happened at a ballgame in Oakland in 1981; it was a playoff game between The Athletics and The Yankees. Professional cheerleader Krazy George Henderson is said to have organized it. You’re welcome for the history lesson. Here’s more info directly from Wikipedia which I was too lazy to paraphrase: “successive groups of spectators briefly
stand, yell, and raise their arms. Immediately upon stretching to full height, the spectator returns to the usual seated position.” The result is something that looks kind of like a wave, cresting around the stadium in one continuous motion. And I hate it. Over the years I have tried to unpack why I hate The Wave. I mean, if people are having fun with it, why should I take any issue with that? I suppose I’ll tell you, or I wouldn’t have submitted this article. Firstly, I don’t like being told what to do. The Wave represents the kind of forced and mandatory participation I reject. I love standing up for the seventh inning stretch and belting out “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” But if someone is sitting down, neither stretching nor singing, I don’t give them the stink eye. I let them be. Again, because I’m a hero. Also, The Wave seems to always pop up during crucial and highly dramatic points of a ballgame. If it’s a blowout and the home team is down 10 runs in the 8th or 9th inning: start your stupid Wave, Neptune. But if we got a close game, with runners on base: give me a little focus, Poseidon! I know by writing this I am outing myself as a curmudgeon. Baseball is often accused CONTINUES ON PAGE 6

of being anti-fun, boring and stale. But I promise you, I am a progressive fan! I love bat flips and wild celebrations! I’m a fan of the pitch clock and the ghost runner on second base in extra innings. I also adore the Savannah Bananas and their chaotic Banana Ball rules. But The Wave? The Wave breaks me. See

Castle Fun Park reopens after repairing flood damage
W
hat's summer without mini golf, go-karting and arcades out in the Fraser Valley? After the amusement park closed due to damages from last year's flooding that also caused massive floods and mudslides on several B.C. highways, Abbotsford's Castle Fun Park is finally open again for the summer. The amusement park announced in January that they were planning a late spring or early summer reopening, but no date was confirmed. Adding to the Canada Day celebrations, Castle Fun Park announced on July 1 on social media that it is open for the summer "with our Go-Kart track ready for you to race." The beloved amusement park features over 200 arcade games, mini golf, batting cages, a go-karting race track, laser maze and bowling. By Maria Diment

5 things you (probably) didn't know about the SeaBus
T
he SeaBus is one of Vancouver's iconic transit symbols. Along with the SkyTrain, it's one of the most recognizable transit vehicles not just in Vancouver, but in B.C. (and probably Canada). And it's not just a quirky, fun tourist gimmick, it's an essential piece of commuter infrastructure with 9,000 boardings on the average workday in 2021. Transit boats have been making the Burrard Inlet crossing for 45 years now. And while most people can recognize the squat, catamaran-style ship, they may not know these five things about the boats. 1. They were originally bright orange Some people reading this will think this is common knowledge. This isn't intended to make you feel old, but we should point out they were repainted before Expo 86, over 36 years ago. 2. They were originally run by BC Hydro That's right. The electric company ran the ferries. For those who know a bit about B.C.'s sometimes complex public transit, this may not be a surprise. B.C. Electric Railway ran the street car system in Vancouver for decades before it was bought by the province in 1961. Operations of that system were moved over to the BC Hydro and Power Authority, which is the full name of BC Hydro. It was during this time that the SeaBus was created, as the city was trying to figure out the best way to get people from North Vancouver to the rest of the city. The Urban Transit Authority, which became BC Transit, took over
in 1979. In 1999 TransLink was fully operational and took over. 3. At least two bands have taken their names from SeaBus doors While many in Vancouver know where SeaBus Memes got his name, he wasn't the first to be inspired. Poppunk rockers Exit This Side took their name from the doors on the Seabus. And they weren't even the first punkers to do so; No Exit in 1980 took their name from essentially the same spot. 4. People used to pay with pennies to get really, really long tickets The SeaBus was the first part of the Vancouver transit system to use ticket machines. However, unlike today's digital machines (or even the token machines from previously used) the first ones were very basic. Essentially a photocopier, the ticket they printed showed the coins used to purchase the ticket. That means it was just an image of each coin. That meant you could get really long tickets if you used a lot of coins, which kids of course did. “Our transfers used to be about four feet long. I’m pretty sure we are the reason they changed it all. The drivers used to get mad,” Connie White told the North Shore News a few years ago. 5. It was commandeered by 'pirates' in 2008 If you took the SeaBus in March of 2008, you might have seen some pirates take over the boat.
Ok, so they weren't the pirates of the Caribbean, or Somalia or even Disneyland. They were activists with the Vancouver Public Space Network in a sort of flash mob, before they were a popular thing, and there was more music than looting going on. By Brendan Kergin

Vancouver Now & Then: Haywood Bandstand, 1912 and 2020
T
he Haywood Bandstand is located at 1755 Beach Ave in Vancouver's Alexandra Park. The Heritage Foundation indicates the bandstand was built in 1914, but the archival photograph is dated 1912. If you look closely at the older image, you can see two small children posing in front of the bandstand. When I took my photo in 2020, a homeless man appeared to be camped under the shelter of the overhang. The North Shore mountains in the background of the old photo appear much closer than in my shot because the original photographer used a much longer lens than mine. You can see the old English Bay Pier in the background. More from the Heritage Foundation: Its Queen Anne architecture is characterized by a light and airy wooden structure, curved brackets cantilevered floor, ornate fretwork, and hipped roof. In 1987-88, the bandstand was restored by the Vancouver Park Board with financial assistance from Haywood Securities, Amon Industries, and the B.C. Heritage Trust, and was renamed the Haywood

I
f you've ever driven down Davie Street toward Denman you would have noticed this West End landmark on Bidwell. Its unique Mission Revival-style architecture is matched by the legends that have survived with it, including bootlegging, brothels, and secret tunnels to the Rogers family mansion a few blocks up the street. All that remains is the front façade of the original building. The rest has been gobbled up by a 21-storey condo development - its four floors of underground parking failed to unearth any tunnels... but did awaken a few ghosts.
Bandstand. It is the only one of the seven bandstand structures that once graced the city to survive. ack in 2013, the Vancouver Canucks made a significant splash at the NHL Entry Draft when they shockingly traded Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils for the 9th overall pick, which they used on Bo Horvat. Nine years later, the Canucks could be set for another big splash at the draft, which takes place on July 7 and 8. There’s even a slim chance that Bo Horvat and the Devils could be involved again. The Canucks currently have
the 15th overall pick in the first round of the draft. They could grab a big, skilled defenceman like Owen Pickering or Lian Bichsel, a goal-scoring winger like Liam Öhgren or Brad Lambert, or a two-way centre like Marco Kasper or Conor Geekie. Even high-end talent like Frank Nazar or Denton Mateychuk could slide down the draft and get snagged by the Canucks. Canucks’ general manager Patrik Allvin might not be content staying at 15, however. Trading down from 15th
overall could make sense for the Canucks. Without a second-round pick — it went to the Arizona Coyotes as part of the trade for Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Conor Garland — the Canucks have fewer opportunities to rebuild their depleted prospect pool, so could move down to pick up an extra pick or two for a couple of extra rolls of the dice. Besides, there might not be a massive gap between the players available at 15th overall and the players the Canucks could pick up after trading down. There are
some intriguing options that could be available later in the first or early in the second round, such as fast, physical centre Nathan Gaucher, highlight-reel winger Jagger Firkus, and mobile puckmoving defenceman Calle Odelius. Those are all good options, but the Canucks might be more likely to make a big splash by trading up. That’s primarily because their biggest need — both in the NHL and in their prospect pool — is a right-handed defenceman. The Canucks could

Salomonsson if they trade down but if they want a true blue-chip prospect on the right side, they need to get a pick in the top-5. That’s where the two best defencemen in the draft, Simon Nemec and David Jiříček, are likely to get picked. And yes, they’re both right-handed. There are two teams in the top-five who might be persuaded to the trade their pick. The Devils are looking to turn the corner with previous top picks like Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier and have said they’re willing to move the 2nd-overall pick. With one of Shane Wright and Juraj Slafkovský available, that might be a tough sale. The Philadelphia Flyers, on the other hand, are looking for a quick retool and badly need a top-end centre, making the 5th-overall pick available. Enter the Canucks, who have two centres with contracts expiring after next season: Horvat and J.T. Miller. Of the two, Horvat is more likely to sign a contract extension than get traded but everything is on the table. Miller is the more obvious choice to get traded and, coming off a 99-point season, makes sense as the centrepiece of a major trade, particularly if the Canucks are willing to retain 50% of his cap hit for next season to further sweeten the deal. Miller and the 15th-overall pick packaged together should be enough for one of those top-five picks and another big piece — perhaps a conditional first-round pick in 2023 or another top prospect. Is a franchise-altering deal in the cards for the Canucks? We’ll find out on Thursday. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

In the news release, the City also recognized that "the Balmoral, prior to its closure, was a site of harm and trauma to many and that the demolition of this building will have an emotional impact on former residents and their families, friends and community." The City is putting out a call to affected community members for guidance on how they can provide respectful and culturally appropriate support during the building's demolition and redevelopment. The land has already been committed to low-income housing that the City has assured residents will be safe and secure.

he Balmoral Hotel looks a bit different this week. The neon blade street sign was removed from the building on Sunday, June 26, due to its "deteriorating condition and risk of injury to the public," according to a news release from the City of Vancouver. The sign was taken down and transported offsite for further assessment although no word yet on what the City is looking for or if the sign will resurface at a later date. The Balmoral has been empty since 2017 and it was announced in February of this year that the building will be demolished after years of irreversible underinvestment and mismanagement has made it permanently unlivable and a public safety risk. The City has said the demolition process is highly complex and will take several months to complete and currently they are still in the planning stages and removing hazardous materials and doing civil site work. The removal of the sign was one of the first visible steps toward the site's new life.
