Students can now slide out of school
I
t looks like someone let students design one of the most unique features of the new Lord Nelson Elementary School, and that's because they did. Sort of. While professionals did all the math and engineering, students were the ones behind the concept for slides popping out the side of the building's second floor. Principal Ankie Carswell says students were consulted when the new school was being designed. "Some of the ideas were really creative and wishful, like a swimming pool, but they acted on the one idea of the slides," she tells Vancouver Is Awesome. As far as she knows it's the first school in B.C. to have such a feature. "When I was first telling colleagues they were incredulous that I had such an awesome playground feature," Carswell says. In fact, she's unaware of any schools with anything like Lord Nelson's slides, and the architects were considering submitting the school for design awards, based in part on the feature. While the new building has been around for a couple of years, the two slides only opened up this spring as supply chain issues meant they were missing a few parts to make them fully safe. The bright orange part (that kids actually slide down) has been in place since the fall (when a few teachers may have taken a trip down under the observation of the

crew building them), but students had to hold back. "We did a 'slides open day' right after spring break," Carswell explains. "I hosted an assembly for the students because we opened a bunch of things at the same time." That included a new playground area, a soccer field and other amenities, but the highlight for the kids was the slides. "We had to have a rotation system so everyone had access to the slides," Carswell says. "We keep them open for a bit after school." There are a few rules for those heading
down, like no eating or backpacks, so kids looking to make a quick escape at the bell have to find a friend or llama to take their bag down the stairs. But for recess or lunch, it's a popular way to get to the playground. Unfortunately, for those looking to try them out, the slides aren't always open, though when Carswell is around she has unlocked them for a bit. Recently she showed up when they were locked up and overheard a child in the playground lamenting the closure of the slides. "I said I'd open them up and there were cheers from around the playground." By Brendan Kergin

broken glass plate on one of the front doors of Vancouver's City Hall has an interesting, congratulatory message on it. It was smashed in late June when anti-street sweep protesters stormed the lobby after council had voted to delay hearing speakers on the subject. The window cracked but was not smashed through and one person was arrested for mischief. In a seemingly cheeky response, the City has used congratulatory wedding-themed wrapping paper to cover the broken window on both sides. The paper has tiered wedding cakes and the word "congratulations" across it. But a spokesperson for City Hall explains
that it isn't passive-aggressive but actually practical and kind of sweet. "After the damage to the City Hall window at the North Entrance, the City Protocol team was hosting some micro-weddings two days after the incident and selected some weddingthemed wrapping paper meant to brighten up the plywood as it is a favourite spot for photos," they told V.I.A in an email. "The wrapping paper will be replaced by a piece of painted plywood because there will be one more set of micro weddings held before the glass is scheduled to be replaced." The City says the new window will be installed within the next four to eight weeks. By Allie Turner with files from Bob Kronbauer

feel like a lawyer. Okay. Now that our watches are all synchedup on what the Pitch Clock is, let’s talk about what it means. And when I say “let’s talk about it” I mean: “Let’s listen to me talk about it.” When I first learned about the Pitch Clock, I hated it. Baseball is supposed to be timeless. Its biggest moments are case studies in mounting tension and anxiety through anticipation. And I didn’t want any stupid clock coming in and rushing those moments along. But now that I’ve been able to experience a little over half of a season watching baseball games that use the clock. I gotta say: I like it. The natural rhythm of the game remains the same, but everyone is a bit more on their toes. It harkens back to the type of baseball (that I’ve only heard about because I am very young and very relevant) that was played in the 70’s or 80’s, when pitches would come every 10-15 seconds.

ear reader(s), it’s time for us to discuss The Pitch Clock. Sorry if I’m a little late getting to this subject, but I move at a slower tempo than most other baseball writers. If you’ve been to Nat Bailey Stadium this season, perhaps you’ve noticed a large digital timer in the outfield wall, counting down from 14 seconds with no runners on base and 19 when there are. That is the Pitch Clock. It’s designed to limit the amount of time a pitcher can utilize before throwing the darned ball and the amount of time a batter has to preen and fiddle with their gloves before they need to get in the darned box. If a pitcher doesn’t hurl a pitch in time, it’s called a ball. If a hitter isn’t ready to go in time, it’s called a strike. Batters are allowed one timeout per plate appearance, and pitchers are limited to two step-offs, or pickoffs, for every batter they face. Whew. Paraphrasing those rules made me

Vancouverite takes jaw-dropping photo of northern lights
A
Vancouver man is sharing a breathtaking perspective of the aurora borealis he snapped on a flight headed back to the city. Greater Vancouver Board of Trade Communications Manager Victor Young was travelling to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on a Lynx Air flight that left Toronto's Lester B. Pearson Airport (YYZ) on Sunday, July 3. Around 1 a.m. on Monday, Young spotted "what looked like a silvery cloud to the north" while he was looking out the window," he tells Vancouver Is Awesome. And while he'd never seen the northern lights before, he "knew that they don’t look green to the naked eye" and used his phone to bring
out its trademark green hues. "The long exposure on my phone was key to getting a good picture and I have a camera reel full of failed attempts before I got it just right," he tells Vancouver Is Awesome. The Vancouverite said he observed the dancing lights at "varying degrees, for well over an hour," adding that it was "a surreal experience" trying to contain his excitement seeing them for the first time while surrounded by a couple of hundred people "who had no idea what was just outside the window. At the risk of waxing poetic, it felt providential to see one of the most iconic natural wonders Canada has to offer on Canada Day long weekend!" By Elana Shepert

Vancouver amalgamation: poll
W
hile there's growing support for Metro Vancouver amalgamating there are some demographics that aren't as excited. In a poll Vancouver is Awesome ran last week, readers voted two-to-one against the idea of amalgamating with the surrounding municipalities. This runs counter to a recent poll by Research Co. done with likely voters in the upcoming municipal election. V.I.A. polled 683 readers and asked the question: Would you support the amalgamation of Metro Vancouver? Of the 683 votes, we can determine that 384 are from within the community. The full results are as follows: Yes, all of Metro Vancouver should be one 32.55 % local, 32.80 % total No, each municipality should stay independent 67.45 % local, 67.20 % total Results are based on an online study of adult Vancouver Is Awesome readers that are located in Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 3.75%, 19 times out of 20. Vancouver Is Awesome uses a variety of techniques to capture data, detect and prevent fraudulent votes, detect and prevent robots, and filter out non-local and duplicate votes. By Brendan Kergin
PITCH CLOCK CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 As well, it doesn’t hurt that game times, on average, are down across minor league baseball when using the Pitch Clock. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I know that I could watch baseball all day/every day…but the casual fan? Not so much. I love bringing friends who aren’t baseball fans to The Nat. But their biggest concern is always: “How long is this thing gonna last?” And finally, to my untrained, unskilled and anecdotal eye: more stuff is happening! I feel like more balls are being put in play than I am used to seeing. Maybe there’s data to support this, but I’m just going with what I see and feel, cause I’m old school like that. More balls in play means more stuff to watch. Not just more hits, but more spectacular dives and catches, throws and tags, running and sliding. I feel like the pitch clock may bring back a brand of baseball that better shows off the beauty, athleticism and choreography that turns people into fans. So what do you think? Wanna roast me on my love of the pitch clock? Come see me at the Nat, I’ll be behind home plate counting down…to fun! By Ryan Beil

5 things you (probably) didn't know about Vancouver's
1. Vancouver is in eastern B.C. This may sound completely
wrong, but take a look at a map of B.C. and find the most extreme points. Because of B.C.'s odd shape, these are actually very far apart. In the southeast you have a tiny corner of Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park jutting east to 114.05424 West. In the northwest, if you go all the way past Skagway to Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park you'll be at 139.05702 West. Vancouver is at 123.2123 West, and that's picking from the western side of the city. Some quick math will
show Vancouver is closer to the eastern point than the western point. And if our math isn't good enough, there's a cairn at the geographic middle of B.C., near a place called Weneez just outside of Vanderhoof. Draw a line directly south from there and you hit Nanaimo, not Vancouver.
2. Population-wise, Vancouver is in northern Canada Before posting an angry comment, please take a moment for context. No, from a straight-

veryone knows a few basic things about Vancouver's geography and geology. Like how it lies on the west coast of Canada, is a port city with access to the Pacific Ocean, and how its location means it's the warmest big city in Canada. However, there are a few secrets to Vancouver's location that are probably a bit unexpected.

up, global perspective, Vancouver is not in northern Canada. But, if you're using Canada's population to determine a mid-point of the nation, Vancouver is well north of that line. While it's a warmer part of the country, and tucked nice and close to the 49th parallel, Vancouver is actually north of a lot of other Canadian cities. Toronto is of course a notable one, with the millions of people that live there, but so is Ottawa, Montreal and even St. John's. In fact, the Maritimes are all south of the 49th (that's right, the maritime and prairie provinces don't share a latitude). Other cities south of the 49th include Sudbury, Ontario (often referred to as the largest city in Northern Ontario), Quebec City and B.C.'s own Victoria (along with a lot of people on the southern Island). The flip side of that is how sparse northern Canada is compared to the rest of the country. While going quite a ways north, only about 118,000 people live in the territories; that's smaller than greater Nanaimo.
3. Vancouver Island and Vancouver get closer and further from each other Let's preface this by noting that plate tectonics is not a simple branch of science. Everyone knows what earthquakes are, but there's another, similar thing tectonic plates do called 'episodic tremor and slip events' (ETS events). Most of the time Vancouver and Vancouver Island are moving closer to each other,

geography and geology For those wondering what volcanic rock looks like, there's a house on Cambie that was designed around a volcanic outcrop that sits there to this day.

5. The highest point in Vancouver is the top of Queen Elizabeth Park
though only by tiny amounts measured in millimeters. But then there are these ETS events, which are more like a series of slips instead of a jolting moment. In this area they happen every 14 of 15 months, and over a few weeks the island backs away from the mainland, before once again getting closer.
4. Vancouver's volcanic Little Mountain This one is simple; Vancouver's Little Mountain has a volcanic history. Don't worry, it's not a volcano (and never was),

but it is made of lava and/or magma. Western B.C. had a lot of volcanic activity back in the day, and as part of that, around 31 to 34 million years ago, the hill formed. What exactly happened is unclear, but in general it was created by magma flowing up through the layers of the Earth. From there it's unclear if it stayed underground as magma, and then the rest of the land was eroded away, or if it broke the surface to become a lava flow. In either case, what's there now used to be liquid rock just over 30 million years ago.
It may not come as a big surprise that the highest point of Vancouver is on top of Little Mountain, especially with Queen Elizabeth Park boasting some of the best sightlines in the city. What's more surprising is second place. A city topographical map shows that an area of Boundary Road near Burnaby's Central Park is the secondhighest spot in the city. When driving past the Korean War Memorial in the park, you're also more than 120 metres above sea level. Third place is a section of Price Street between Boundary Road and Joyce Street.

Remote hermit shed listed for $75,000 property which "includes miscellaneous hand tools," according to the listing on landquest.com. Other structures include a wash house with a shower as well as a cookhouse where you can comfortably cook your meal for one. Property ownership is not included in the deal as the roughly one-acre piece of land it sits on is on a Crown lease agreement with four years
left on it. This agreement (which may or may not be eligible to be renewed) will have the new cabin owner making annual payments of $530 to the B.C. government. The listing price is $75,000 and must be a cash purchase. By Bob Kronbauer

Festival of all things meat and cheese returns this fall And so we "meat" again: the Vancouver Cheese and Meat Festival will return for 2022 with an event they hope will be un-brie-lievable for charcuterie fans this fall. their wares for ticket-holders to enjoy. While a participating list of cheese and meat vendors - as well as folks who make all the goodies to go on or with your charcuterie board, like honey, chocolate and alcohol - has not been confirmed for 2022, past participants include well-known businesses. Last year the fest welcomed Two Rivers Meats, Bon Macaron, Arc Imports, Habibi's, Eve's Crackers, Sheringham Distillery, and Truffle Pig Chocolate, to name a few. "Our goal is to introduce guests to new products and exciting pairings that excite their taste buds. The key is that guests can journey to the Festival as a one-stop shop to taste various products produced locally," said founder David Bain in 2021.

Here's how the festival works, according to organizers: With your Tasting Tickets, VIP Ticket, or Super Pass, you will get entry into the beautiful venue. Upon entry, you will be handed a charcuterie board to take home and a wine glass. From there you can walk around the venue sampling from our amazing artisan food and beverage vendors. No extra fees! Each vendor is there to guide you through their creations while suggesting pairing ideas with vendors around them. Passes start at $95.75 and are available to purchase online for each of the three tasting sessions starting July 14. By Lindsay William-Ross
