Vancouver Canadians: Playoffs? Where we're going there are no playoffs! postseason will consist of a single, bestof-five championship series between two teams. Those two teams will be determined based on the best winning percentage for each half of the season. Some of you, right now, might be saying: wait, wait, wait…the Canadians' baseball season is divided into two halves? And some of you, right now, might also be saying: yeah, yeah, yeah… we know all this, why am I reading this stupid article? Both are valid questions, however, I will only answer the one that wasn’t mean. Yes. Our beloved Northwest League’s season is divided into two halves. This is generally called a Split Season format. And maybe you’re wondering why? Well, a couple of things spring to mind to answer that query. For starters, the minor leagues are primarily about development. Ballplayers can move up a level (or down) at any point during the season. Potentially, a team that has a ton of good players at the start of the season may see them all promoted, leaving them weak and vulnerable down the stretch. Another reason is fan interest. If your favourite team sucks out the gate, the reset in the middle of the season gives new hope and allows everyone to get back on the bandwagon. Whatever the reason, it is what it is, and

on’t look now, but the C’s are currently in first place in the Northwest league standings. I said don’t look! Did you look? Oh, no…you probably jinxed it. Depending on when you consume this article the aforementioned statement (about the C’s being number one that you then jinxed by checking it) may, or may not, be true. In a six-team league, the wins and loss column can become a veritable dogfight, with teams soaring or crashing before you’ve had a chance to take it all in. So, I recognize this article might be out of date at any moment. But as of this writing, the Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club has won four games in a row and holds sole possession of first place. With the much hated, and terribly named, Everett Aquasox hot on their heels. With the risk of outing myself as a TooSoon-Tommy, which is a term I just made up, I thought it might be a good time to check in on the playoff format for the Northwest League as we continue to barrel along through this glorious summer. The short answer is: There are no playoffs! And yes, you read that right. As long as you read: There are no playoffs. With only six clubs in the league, the

the C’s are currently top of the pack in the second half. And in case you’re wondering, and to save you some googling, the Eugene Emeralds (last year’s champions) clinched the First Half on June 18. And just to add some drama to it all: they did it with a 13-0 victory over the Vancouver Canadians. So, we need you at the ballpark right now. The C’s are on the hunt and if they continue their winning ways, they will face the Emeralds in the postseason. By Ryan Beil

f you missed it, the Little Mountain Gallery, a long-time comedy venue, shut down at the end of 2021. The building it was in was demolished earlier this month to make for a new one. With the gallery shutting down, comedy shows essentially left the Riley Park-Little Mountain neighbourhood - but not for long. Bodzy Wash, a weekly show hosted by Brendan Washbern and Mike Bodz launched this summer. The pair are busy with the weekly stand-up night at a recently vacated shop next to the Shameful Tiki Room; it's set up as a small theatre space. "A lot of the venues are getting closed down so we're trying to start a new one," says Washbern, who notes the area used to also see shows at Hood 29, which has also disappeared. With two shows each Thursday night featuring four or five comedians (and maybe a drop-in set), Bodzy Wash regularly brings local comedy back to the neighbourhood, while

most comedy nights stay in the city's core. "People like that it's right down the street, it's so much easier than commuting downtown," says Washbern. "There's a lot of foot traffic there—non-stop during the day." "We also have A/C, so that's a big selling feature," he adds. The show also takes advantage of a space that would otherwise be empty. The pair are hustling to keep the venture going; in one case Bodz set up a lemonade stand to draw in potential audience members (and caught the eye of one slightly touchy woman). At the same time, they're not sure how long they'll stay in the location, though they're booked through mid-August. "We're just going to do it week by week really," says Washbern. "We're going to try and keep it going as long as we can." Bodzy Wash is every Thursday with shows at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. By Brendan Kergin

of the crowd. But we can see plenty of the crowd, and there are a few notable differences and similarities. The biggest difference, other than the changes that intersection has gone through in the intervening 130 years, is the fashion. Summer music festival-goers from 2022 would likely cause quite a stir amongst this audience. And while the stir might not be quite as dramatic, if some showed up to FVDED IN THE PARK in a suit with a hat or cane, or in a large dress, they'd likely get a few sideways glances. While fashion has changed wildly (and we can't see the merch stand or how much bottles of water were going for), the fact that people showed up with their own chairs shows they aren't all that different from many people nowadays. In fact, it shows an outstanding commitment to sitting, as the chair appears to be wooden and not foldable.

ummer is music festival season. From England's epic Glastonbury to Montreal's massive Osheaga to Vancouver's new Ambleside Music Festival coming up, the summer is by far the most popular time for heading to a music fest somewhere outside. And while Vancouver's music festival has been a bit shaky at times, music outside stretches back into local history. In the early days of the city there were seven bandstands built as musical gathering points. Only one still exists. This photo was taken at Georgia and Granville, a very different intersection these days. In it people have gathered for music on Canada Day in 1892 (at the time it was known as Dominion Day). "(A) music festival in (the) C.P.R. park on the northwest corner of Georgia and Granville Streets," states the archival description of the event. We can't quite make out the musicians, who appear to be somewhere in the middle

aunched in the summer of 2021, Chupito, the cocktail bar you can only get to through the alley behind La Taqueria on Hastings Street, is up and running again with a refreshed menu for the season. A fresh line-up of cocktails inspired by the sights, sounds, and most importantly the flavours of Mexico are coming out of Chupito's tiny shipping container bar, to be enjoyed under the sky (or umbrellas) for an urban evening escape to the seashore far south of the border. Look for stellar sippers like the Orinoco, a cocktail that was created to evoke the scent and taste of carnitas tacos. The drink uses smoky Mezcal "washed" with carnitas (a fatty, braised shredded pork) and is even garnished with a cilantro leaf. Of course, not every drink is made to remind you of what you ate after your last spring break bender - and to be clear, these are not at all like the watered-down, sugary drinks you might knock back at an all-inclusive resort. These are thoughtful, creative cocktails that will spark curiosity and conversation. CONTINUES ON PAGE 9

However, the drinks are also designed to go handily with Chupito's lovely menu of easily-shared small plates. You'll feel whisked to a beach town through bites of ceviche or zingy aguachile. One standout on the updated menu is the Tostada de Pescado en Salsa Macha - a fish tostada enlivened with salsa macha, a sauce from Veracruz, Mexico that is at once tangy, textured and a little smoky. If you're looking for hand-held comfort eats veer right to the elote (a staple Mexican street food of corn on the cob covered in mayo, crema, queso fresco, lime, and chile) or to the tacos. Crunch into golden-fried tacos dorados including the very popular birria, a slow-cooked shredded meat. Yes, Chupito is really located off a downtown Vancouver alley You'll be eating and drinking in one of Vancouver's most creative spaces. Chupito was created as a result of the COVID era prompting a patio explosion in the city. La Taqueria wanted to make the most of their "around the back" space, which happens to be between old walls that still bear the scars of vintage advertising, foliage, and graffiti past. The ground is covered in loose gravel, and a few umbrellas hover above to keep out the sun, or, the inevitable rain. (It's important to note, if it's really coming down, Chupito won't open for the day; you'll want to check in with them on Instagram to ensure they're braving the elements.) Chupito is open - weather permitting - Wednesday through Friday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 11 p.m. The secret patio is located in the alley behind 322 W Hastings St.

2. Babe Ruth was a sports journalist for the Vancouver Sun for a day Babe Ruth was one of the biggest names in sports when he came to Vancouver for the first time. The "Murders' Row" he led had just finished up the 1926 season making it to game seven of the world series (where Ruth got tossed out trying to steal second). In November he came to the city, making a week's worth of appearances at Pantages Theatre, a

vaudeville theatre that used to be in what is now the Downtown Eastside. As part of his visit, he visited the Vancouver Sun's office, even penning an article titled "Ruth Not Hold-out He Says" which is more of an opinion piece about his contract negotiations with the Yankees. He was making $52,000 US per season, which was a massive contract by the standards of the time, but is around $850,000 in today's money. But the value of his fame was recognized; the 12-week tour of vaudeville theatres he was

on grossed him $100,000 ($1.6 million today). That wasn't his only big trip to Vancouver; in 1934 he played a promotional game here at Athletic Park (which was located near Granville Island) with the likes of Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx. The group was part of a promotional tour headed to Japan on the second Empress of Japan, the famous ship travelling between Vancouver and Hong Kong with stops in Japan and mainland China. 5 THINGS BASEBALL CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 3. Hank Aaron filmed a scene of MacGyver at BC Place For three seasons MacGyver was shot in Vancouver, and it was during this time in the mid-80s that they hired a certain legend of baseball to make a cameo. Hank Aaron, at the time the all-time home run record holder (and still the all-time RBI record holder), is called upon to take a couple of pitches (and knock a dinger into the seats) at BC Place, where the 'Bluebirds' are practicing. Oddly enough, it wasn't the first time Hank Aaron played baseball at BC Place; he was

part of an old-timers game in 1983 that also featured Roger Maris. It took place on Aug. 12, 1983, just a month after the stadium opened and was the precursor to a Vancouver Canadians game. While the average Canadians game these days is around 6,200, the game had almost 42,000 fans, likely because guys like Aaron and Maris were the opening act. 4. A League of their Own was inspired by Vancouver sisters To say the 1992 film is based on the Callaghan sisters isn't totally accurate, but it definitely wouldn't have been made if it weren't for them.

The pair, Marge and Helen, were legends of the AllAmerican Girls Professional Baseball League, the only professional women's baseball league ever. Having grown up in Vancouver, the two were multi-sport athletes who were part of a softball team that represented Canada at a world softball tournament in Detroit in the early 1940s. From there they were scouted by the women's league, which formed as WWII sent many professional male players to war. Helen was signed first, joining the Minneapolis Milleretters in 1944 and ripping up the league (she

holds the record for most bases stolen with 354, almost one a game). In her second season she led the league in batting average, hits, home runs, bases and doubles, earning the nickname "the Ted Williams" of women's baseball. Marge wasn't doing poorly, either, as a star defensive shortstop. Legend has it she also hit the longest home run in the league. Both sisters ended up moving to the Fort Worth Daises when the team moved and continued their success, and then other teams. Helen played five seasons while Marge played seven.

Their connection to the film is more than just their field time, though. Helen's son Kelly Candaele went on to make a documentary about the league for PBS; that documentary inspired the film. Two further notes about the sisters Callaghan; both are a part of the Baseball Hall of Fame, as the league was added and a permanent display included. Also, another of Helen's sons went on to play ball for the Montreal Expos among others; Casey Candaele is maybe the only professional baseball player to follw in his mother's footsteps. Unfortunately, both sisters

have passed. Helen died of breast cancer in 1969. Marge died in 2019 at age 97. 5. The first night game in Canada was played here under the lights at Athletic Park, years before the MLB did it Athletic Park was a legendary field in Vancouver back in the day; in fact, the reason it's last on this list is because it's part of so much of Vancouver's baseball history. Its interesting history started before it was even a field; Vancouver's Bob Brown, a legend in his own right, cleared the area with a pickaxe and dynamite himself to create space for the field. It's where Babe Ruth played that game in 1934, the Asahi played their often (though it wasn't their home field), and the Callaghan both spent plenty of time on the field. However, it's another event where it really outshone every other baseball diamond, literally In 1931 the field was lit up with electric lights. It was both the first time in Canada and the first time west of the Mississippi. The second time happened minutes later, as a double header took place. In the first game the Firemen beat the Arrows 5-3, while the second saw VAC beat BC Telephone 1-0. "Mother Nature took one more on her calloused old chine last night when the darkness of night vanished in the light," wrote Sun sports reporter Andy Lytle, noting the achievement came thanks to "another of those human artifices that belong to our modernity." He also wrote that the moon was startled and "almost persuaded to roll right back again when her eyes caught the startling sight of multipower incandescents giving her the well-known works." It wasn't until 1935 that the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies would play a game under the lights, the first time any Major League game occurred at night. Unfortunately, the field is gone. In 1946 the land was bought as the Granville Bridge was planned. The last game was played in 1951, the same year Nat Bailey Stadium opened. By Brendan Kergin

What to expect at this year's Powell Street Festival

POWER STREET FESTIVAL

A

small, Vancouver version of the Japanese Matsuri festival is once again happening in the city's Japantown. Influenced by the grand Japanese event and typical Japanese summer festivals, the Powell Street Festival is held in the paueru gai area– Vancouver's historic Japanese Canadian neighbourhood. This year, the two-day festival is taking place July 30 and 31 from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. around Powell Street, with food trucks, arts and festivities to celebrate and recognize the city's Japanese community. Many cultural displays, demonstrations and activities will take place, including martial arts demonstrations and an amateur sumo tournament. There will also be arts in various mediums such as dance, music, and film, as well as walking tours of the historic neighbourhood. A marketplace and food booths serving Japanese eats, with food trucks anchored near the end of the road, will line Alexander

and Jackson streets, with a stage at the intersection. A main stage will be set up with other activities at Oppenheimer Park which will be the hub of the festival, with tents, booths, demo areas and more.
