rom streetwear to formal dresses, British Columbia is home to a diverse array of Indigenous designers who are sharing their art and culture through fashion. Small businesses often have to jostle for a place in the spotlight and since there is no shortage of talent in this province many people don't get the recognition they deserve. Lists of Indigenous Designers in Canada tend to focus on the big players in other provinces who are of course doing amazing work, but it's important to recognize those closer to home too. brands you should know about. Section 35 This Indigenous streetwear brand based in Vancouver (the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations) was founded by Nipisihkopahk designer and photographer Justin Louis in 2016. The pieces blend Louis' graphic and fashion design skills and reflect contemporary Indigenous style. Many of the T-shirts, hoodies, hats, and pants have anticolonial messaging and Louis' goal is to promote Indigenous arts, culture, and lifestyle through clothing.
Totem Design House Haida and Cree siblings Erin and Jesse Brillon have created a clothing line that re-imagines the traditional animal crests of the Northwest Coast Peoples without 'trinketizing' them. The screen-printed shirts, tank tops, and hoodies are sewn in Vancouver and have garnered attention for their blend of pop culture icons like Star Wars with Indigenous art. They have options that are playful and slightly nerdy and ones that are more traditional. Totem Design House also does jewellery, fine art prints, and homewares like throw pillows. Dorothy Grant In 2016 actor Duane E. Howard wore Dorothy Grant's Eagle Raven tuxedo on the Oscars Red Carpet. The fashion designer and traditional Haida artist has a storefront in Tsawwassen and has received the Order of Canada for her contributions to Canadian fashion.

pieces from what appears to be a mechanic who has a lot of leftover bumpers from cab companies. He then piles it all onto a bike trailer and 'sneaks' into the lot. Up until Queen BX1000, Junko had been working in Montreal, turning junk into robotic-looking beasts around town. He's been active since 2020 as Junko, but keeps his real identity hidden; it's unclear if the Vancouver project, which appeared in late June, was made while he's visiting Vancouver, or if he's now residing here. In an interview with Global in Montreal he described his work as "carefully arranged piles of garbage." Some of his pieces have been quite large and set up in parks and parking lots in Montreal, while a few others have been small and mobile.

f you spotted a giant yellow mechanicallooking beast resting near the Fraser River recently, you should know that, no, the Autobots aren't invading Vancouver. Sorry for the disappointment. On the upside, the gargantuan canine-looking object is a piece of art called Queen BX1000, and it's the most recent installation by an artist known only as Junko Playtime. The huge piece of art is made up of a wooden frame covered in car parts. Ironically, perhaps intentionally, Queen BX1000 was put together without the aid of engines or motors. "The installation was created without the aid of a motorized vehicle. All materials were collected within the city and transported to the site on makeshift bicycle trailer setups," states Junko in an Instagram post. The piece, on a chunk of private land, has been standing in full view of commuters as they pass over the Fraser River on the Canada Line, though it's a little small and in the distance, as the lot it's in is covered by bushes. However, the piece itself is not small; Junko took photos with the big yellow art machine, and using that as a reference it appears to be close to 15 feet high at the 'ears.' In one post he shows how he collected the

ancouver knows and loves 'the guy in the pink hat.' Recognized by his bright pink fedora hat and corresponding head-to-toe pink outfit, Glenn Tkach is the sole creator and tour guide of Vancouver's Really Gay History Walking Tour.
Tkach has spent close to a year researching and studying the city's queer history. He's heard many first-hand accounts, uncovered many stories, and was one of the last few to see Ron Dutton's queer history archive while it was still preserved in his apartment before the collection was donated to the city for safekeeping.
But doing research into this history has only made Tkach hungry for more, he tells Vancouver Is Awesome. That's why the all-pink tour guide is starting his own podcast (don't worry, he'll still wear the iconic pink hat). The podcast, called Requeering History, is
still in the works with a launch date sometime in the Fall. Tkach plans on learning and telling history from far and wide, "beyond the local history and beyond the 20th century." Though episodes won't be released until later CONTINUES ON PAGE9

here has been a working hospital on this site (1081 Burrard St) since 1894, but the present structure was built in 1913, with several more additions throughout the years. Recently a new location was established for St. Paul's Hospital, and the Burrard Street location has been sold and will be redeveloped.

new station has started broadcasting in Vancouver. Wave 98.3 FM is calling itself "Vancouver’s Coolest Vibe" in promotional material; it took to the airwaves July 18. "WAVE 98.3 features a mix of smooth tunes, funky instrumentals, classic Motown and R&B as well as hits from today’s biggest stars like Michael Bublé, Adele and The Weeknd," states the new station in a press release. Personalities include Tara Jean Stevens on mornings, Vickie Van Dyke is on middays and Danny Mags with the afternoon commute. Evenings are the purview of Gary James, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Shows from 'Downtown' Julie Brown and Dave Koz round out Saturdays and Sundays. The Wave was launched by Durham Radio, an Oshawa-based broadcasting
group with six stations across southern Ontario, including 94.7 the Wave based out of Hamilton. The sale of 98.3 FM was approved last year. Previously, 98.3 FM was the home of CIRH-FM Roundhouse Radio, an independent station that shuttered in 2018. Since then, the frequency has been essentially unoccupied. By Brendan Kergin

5 things you (probably) didn't know about China Creek skatepark
L
ast weekend a spot some would consider an unlikely candidate got a heritage plaque. The China Creek skatepark, made up of two bowls of concrete, is recognized for its role in the city's skateboarding culture. Built in 1979, it's been around for more than 40 years; that's a feat given the sport didn't really take off until the 70s. As one of the more obscure historical locations in Vancouver there's a good chance you may not know much about the curvy concrete above China Creek, and so here are a few new
facts (probably). 1. It was built above a creek and an (impromptu) dump Perhaps the name China Creek skateboard park gives it away, but the bowls are built above a creek basin. And it's not like that name is just for a nearby feature. China Creek's historical route appears to be directly beneath the double bowls as it runs from Trout Lake to the (historical) edge of False Creek. In the early days of the city, particularly the 20s and 30s, the area was used as a sort
2. It's not the oldest skatepark in Vancouver Opened in the summer of 1979, China Creek skatepark is widely thought of as the third skatepark in Canada and the first in the City of Vancouver, following a couple of others in Metro Vancouver. However, local historian Michael Gordon notes it was beat by a year by the Prince Edward Park bowl, which the parks board built in 1978. Which is still (sort of) there. The little bowl can be seen, partially buried, in the park just off Main Street at East 22 and Sophia. It's buried in sand and playground equipment. Gordon isn't sure when it was buried but notes it was likely due to noise complaints (a common issue with skate parks). According to longtime local skateboarders, no one remembers it, despite the fact it's physically there, and there's paperwork to back it up.

of garbage dump. The creek had created a wide ravine, at points 200 feet wide and 40 feet deep (it was the last section of the largest drainage basin in Vancouver). Give people a free, easy place to dump things in a city, and they'll take it, whether it's permitted or not. In 1951 the city put the creek through a pipe and revitalized the area; the China Creek parks were founded without any creek within sight. More recently, there have been people interested in uncovering and 'daylighting' the creek.
3. It fell apart right away Nelson Holland, who had designed the other Metro Vancouver skate parks, designed the bowls with the help of local kids, and they came up with a grand plan. However, when they started building it they found the soil was not good (remember how it was filled in over a creek?). This meant it had to be reconfigured so the concrete wouldn't crack as the soil below shifted. The original design had one pool area, a half-pipe and some free area (in all costing about $32,000); at the time street skating wasn't a thing, so rails for CONTINUES ON PAGE 13

grinding and things like that weren't considered. The smaller design (the bathtub and the teacup) were built and set to be opened in August of 1979. “There were people who came at nighttime after the top coat went on that were skating it, but the concrete didn’t marry properly to the surface,” Monty Little told the Vancouver Courier in 2019. “It’s opening day, people from the city are there and it’s falling apart. Not the best PR. It was devastating.” The park had to be shut down for several weeks while it was re-coated.
5. In 2006 the city almost decided to destroy it In 2006 some people with the city thought it was time to give China Creek South Park an upgrade. Parks board staff came up with three options; one would keep the skate park in that location, one would see it moved, and one would see it broken up and a new one built in a yet-to-bedetermined place. Residents of the neighbourhood heavily supported the last one. "Option 3 is supported by the majority of residents living very close to the park, and by some residents who live in the neighbourhood but not adjacent to the park," staff noted in a report. "Option 3 is not supported by the skateboarders." Before the commissioners made their decision a delegation of skateboarders attended a meeting to argue for their cause. Luckily for the skaters, the parks board decided it should stay in place (though some rails were removed because of noise). By Brendan Kergin

4. There have been annual competitions held by the Jaks since the 80s The Jaks is a "hardcore skateboard team" that was founded in the early 80s, according to iconic Vancouver skate brand Skull. And they aren't just active in Vancouver; you'll find Jaks Skateteam all over the place. "The team is a blend of old school skaters, hardcore punkers and crazy f***ers that skate," they say on their website, which is also filled with Vancouver skater histroy. Around 1985, with the China Creek skatepark well established and the only park of its kind in the city, they decided to hold
competitions, arguably the oldest regular competitions in Canada. The last one appears to have been in September 2019, just before the pandemic put events like it on hold.
