s the autumn rains begin and we retreat into our homes for shelter from them, so do the spiders of Vancouver. You'll notice more of them in the coming days and weeks ahead. Near the inside of your doorway. In the sink. Hopefully not in your shoes. When this time of year rolls around I'm always reminded of one fall evening when I was sitting at my kitchen table late at night, and I spotted a giant one on the floor. I was working on my computer and out of the corner of my eye saw what I thought was a mouse making its way towards me. It was not a mouse. Running along the hardwood flooring at speed, making an audible clicking noise due to its tremendous size, was the spider shown in the jar here. I did what most people would do: captured it then tweeted out the trophy photo of it so others could share in my late night horror. Then I reached out to Catherine Scott, author of the Spiderbytes blog who has an MSc in biology from SFU, to get an expert opinion on the matter. As it turns out this thing pictured is common in Vancouver. It's a Giant House Spider. It's not aggressive and it would rather avoid you than come at you. If you get bit by it, Catherine tells me that "Nothing bad, barring an allergic reaction" will happen. "It might hurt a bit, but then be fine... much like a bee or wasp sting or insect bite." She says the same of its cousin the Hobo spider, which the internet tells us can cause "tissue necrosis", "dermonecrotic lesions",

horrible horrible pain and possible death. Then you go to hell, according to the internet. But the Giant House Spider? "They are harmless." Harmless if they bite you, sure. However the trauma of having a large, loud spider run towards me, at speed, will stick with me for some time. Enjoy your fall, make sure you keep your windows and doors shut! By Bob Kronbauer

Food bank sues donation platform operator for $143,000
V
ancouver’s food bank society is suing the operator of an online fundraising platform for $143,000 after she allegedly failed to meet conditions of an earlier court agreement. In a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court Oct. 25, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society (GVFBS) said the situation dates back to 2010 when the food bank — a charity reliant on donations to provide food for the needy — contracted Pinc Productions Inc. to create an online donations platform and to process those donations. Beverly Claire Pomeroy is named as the defendant in the case. According to the claim, the net donations were supposed to be deposited into the food bank’s bank account each month after deducting Pinc’s fees. In 2011, the claim said, Global Currents Enterprises Inc. assumed Pinc’s obligations under the contract. “Pomeroy was the directing mind, sole director, officer and shareholder of both Global and Pinc,” the claim said, adding both companies were late in accounting for and remitting donations each month. The claim alleges the companies

conspired and converted funds for their own use. As of Sept. 7, 2012, the food bank was due $169,912, the claim said. It alleges Pomeroy received directly or indirectly some or all of the missing funds. While the GVFBS sought damages for the missing funds, Pomeroy assigned herself into bankruptcy in January 2013, said the claim. However, in 2014, they entered into a settlement agreement in which Pomeroy was to pay $90,000, plus the interest accrued post-judgment, until the amount was paid in full. The settlement agreement said Pomeroy
would pay $250 a month and provide a declaration of assets and liabilities each Nov. 1. The GVFBS said it has not received a declaration in two years. To date, Pomeroy has paid $27,000 of the $86,807 she owes, according to the claim. GVFBS's claim said the organization now wants the missing funds minus payments made. It also seeks damages for the alleged receipt of those missing funds. Pomeroy could not be reached for comment. By Jeremy Hainsworth

Vancouver beer has been named the first-ever winner of the Canada Beer Cup. Callister Brewing Company's Wee Laird Wee Heavy Scottish Ale was the 'Best in Show', beating out over 1,000 entries to be named champion. The beer, a smoky and potent Scotch ale (aka a wee heavy), was announced as the winner during a nationally streamed ceremony, with people watching at craft brewpubs across Canada. Earlier in the evening, the brew won gold in the wood-influenced category. "HOLY MOLY," Callister's team celebrated on Instagram. "Well, we are feeling pretty stoked and humbled. We managed to take two golds, a bronze and Best in Show at the inaugural @canadabeercup awards!" Callister's other gold came with their Cuban Taxi Guava Gose; their bronze came for their In Bloom Lambic Style Ale. Vancouver was well represented at the new awards, with several other awards. Main Street Brewing won a gold for their Naked Fox IPA, while Container Brewing took three awards (silvers for Seawise Giant and Three Legged Bare and a bronze for Seeing Doppel). Brewhall took a pair of silvers as well (Azedo Tropical Fruit Sour and Slice of Paradise Yuzu Wheat Ale) while 33 Acres brewing took a pair of bronzes (33 Acres of Life and 33 Acres of Darkness). Settlement Brewing also had some good news when their Good News pale ale took a silver, and Bomber Brewing got a bronze for
its Tanada Rice Lager. Out of the 175 awards (broken down into 10 categories and 70 styles), B.C. breweries took home 46 awards. The Canada Beer Cup is a new competition created by the Canadian Craft Brewers Association for independent craft breweries. Earlier in October, more than 40 beer experts from Canada and abroad gathered to try out over 1,000 entries. Of the 70 different styles judged, there was one unique one: Canadian Style Beer, which was open to interpretation but had to celebrate Canada in some way. It was won this year by Sugar Shack from Shacklands Brewing in Toronto. By Brendan Kergin

The Vancouver rain doesn’t bother new Canuck Ethan Bear
V
ancouver, B.C. may be a long way from the Ochapowache Nation in Saskatchewan, but for Ethan Bear, it feels an awful lot like home. Bear is the Vancouver Canucks’ newest defenceman after a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes last week, but it’s far from his first time living in B.C. When he was 14, he left his home in Saskatchewan to chase his hockey dream in Kelowna at the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy. The 25-year-old defenceman still has a significant connection to Kelowna and not just because that’s where he trains in the offseason with new Canucks teammate Luke Schenn. “My fiance’s from Kelowna,” said Bear after his first practice with the Canucks. “Honestly, it just feels good to be back in Canada.” Bear played his junior hockey just over the border with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL. That’s where he caught the attention of NHL scouts, getting drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round in 2015. In his two seasons after being drafted, Bear’s development took off and he became one of the top-scoring defencemen in the WHL. It took another two years after that for Bear to make the NHL full-time, but when he did, he immediately stepped into a top-four role for the Oilers. After two years in Edmonton, he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, where things got off to a great start before a bout with COVID-19 sent his season off the rails. “That was very, very tough,
especially after having a strong start playing first pair and then getting really sick,” said Bear. “It took my body a long time to really recover from that…That really hurt my season.” It took a fifth-round pick for the Oilers to get Bear and that’s what it took for the Canucks too. It would have cost more if Bear hadn’t fallen out of favour in Carolina as he struggled to recover from COVID, winding up a healthy scratch for the playoffs. When it became clear that he wasn’t in the Hurricanes’ plans, he looked for somewhere else to continue his NHL career. “I asked for a trade,” said Bear. “Just the way everything ended last year, I asked them to give me a new opportunity. They said they would sign and trade me. Once I signed, it obviously took a lot longer than I hoped for but they stuck to their word.” He couldn’t ask for a better opportunity than with the Canucks, who desperately need to improve their defence on the right side. Despite being a healthy scratch for the Hurricanes, Bear immediately becomes the Canucks’ best offensive defencemen on the right side and should be able to slot in on the second pairing. Most of all, Bear just wants to get back on the ice. “It’s been a while since I’ve played. It’s been a lot of skating and working out. It’s just going to be nice to get to play a game and compete again,” said Bear. “With this lineup and with the leaders they have, I have a strong belief that we can easily turn this thing around.” While Bear is on the final
year of his current contract, there’s a chance he could make Vancouver a long-term home. After all, it does have some advantages compared to Saskatchewan. “Honestly, the two teams I wanted to play for were Vancouver or Seattle,” said Bear. “I don’t mind the rain — I like the weather, I grew up in it for four years in Seattle…Rain is a little better than minus-30.” By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

id you know that the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) once owned the Vancouver Canucks? And that they sold the team for $175,000? It’s true. These days the City of Vancouver owns the PNE, and if they would have held onto the team we the taxpayers might very well have become the owners of our very own NHL franchise. This was all back in 1962, in their minor

Vancouver’s problem with homelessness is at an all time high, with many of those with no home of their own being under the age of 24. At the Courier, we decided to provide an opportunity to our readers to give a little cheer and kindness to the youth on our streets this holiday season. league era before they joined the NHL. The team was bought by a guy who was the mayor of Vancouver just a few years prior. Fred Hume was mayor from 1950 until 1958 and came to be known as both "the charming mayor" and "Vancouver's nicest mayor." He was also a generous mayor; during Hume's years in office, he took home $1 a year in pay and donated the rest of his
salary to charity. Hume lost $125,000 on the Canucks, but thanks partly to his support they were able to hang on and eventually become an NHL expansion team a few years later, in 1970. Sadly, Vancouver's nicest mayor died in 1967, before the Canucks joined the NHL. By Bob Kronbauer

New board game cafe opening
Bueno came to understand that ramen must have five elements - the soup, noodles, toppings, seasoning, and aroma oil - but that within that framework so much of what you can do with the dish is possible. What makes ramen so versatile is that the core soup base isn't seasoned as a whole in the cooking process - the seasonings are added on by the bowl, which makes the broth - and flavours so buildable. Taking his obsession to the next level by launching an Instagram feed dedicated to his slurp-ventures in ramen eating, Bueno tried his hand at making the beloved Japanese noodle soup dish at home. He moved on to work for another award-winning Vancouver ramen spot, Danbo, before ending up in
the kitchen at Shameless Buns - one of the restaurants that let him use their Fraser Street space for hosting pop-ups once he felt ready to share his ramen-making with the public. The Ramen Club was up and running, and was itinerant for about a year before Bueno signed on to share the Bao Down space. The Olympic Village Filipino restaurant also is home to Riz sushi's catering outfit and the Mr Beast Burger pop-up. You'll find them at 115 W. 2nd Ave, Thursday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Follow @theramenclub.yvr on Instagram. new board cafe called the Turquoise Goat is being opened by partners Leah Katz and Joey Kudish. Board games are the focus of the new cafe, which will mix the late-80s and early-90s decor (expect neon colours, murals, toys, and pop culture) with exposed brick at 122 W Hastings St. The food will fit around the theme with fun, tasty dishes, and simple plating so gameplay can continue. They'll also have breakfast cereals, for that Saturday morning feel. Don't worry, they even made sure to get larger tables so plates and playing surfaces both fit.
To that end, they've also curated a selection of teas and coffees and plan on being open to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday (though they're closed on Tuesdays) and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, meaning people have somewhere to hang out deep into the night without feeling the pressure to drink. Last week also marked their eighth week with multiple albums on the Billboard top 200, which is another record. The pop stars have over 26 million fans worldwide (and that's just on Instagram) and back in 2017 when they filmed the music video for the single "Likey" off their first studio album, they used spots all over Vancouver including a now-iconic SkyTrain car. On SkyTrain car 153, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Nayeon, Mina, and Tzuyu danced as Dahyun and Chaeyoung rapped and it has become a

fun little Easter egg for visitors and locals to find when on Vancouver's public transit. One Vancouver musician made a series of TikToks expressing his excitement to be in the same space earlier this week. He says it's a little game he likes to play on his commute home. The SkyTrain car is part of the Expo line and admittedly looked a lot newer and shinier in the video. So if you're hopping on from Granville or Stadium-Chinatown, look out. Other sites in the video include the painted Alley Oop between Granville and Seymour, the Seawall, and the Hotel Europe in Gastown.

we also felt it was important to have those kinds of openness and values in our business," says Katz. "We've hired individuals who are like, 'Hey, you know, I'm queer and poly, and I've never felt safe to say that at work,' or 'I've never felt accepted.'" "If we don't do it, who else is going to?" They're also working on being as accessible as possible: some games include braille, they've curated a selection for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, there are games that work well for colourblind folks, and some with different languages or that don't require strong English skills.

Cold, wet weather and local unhoused
U
nion Gospel Mission (UGM) in Vancouver is concerned about the effect that the atmospheric rivers and forecast low temperatures will have on the un-housed population in the city. "The cold and wet weather is dangerous for people who are experiencing homelessness and living outdoors, and they are often unprepared for it," says spokesperson Nicole Mucci. The UGM shelter on East Hastings has 92 beds that the organization reports have been uncharacteristically full all summer and fall. Within the last 10 months, they say they have had to turn away an average of six people each night, totalling 1,949 people since January. Why is it dangerous? On nights when it isn't cold enough to prompt the activation of the Extreme Weather Response (EWR) shelters, UGM is concerned about where the people they turn away will go. They anticipate that by January they will be turning away 558 people a month. "It's not a matter of if, it's when," says Mucci in a phone interview with Vancouver Is Awesome. She says that this kind of weather is dangerous for the unhoused because individuals are consistently exposed to the elements like wind, rain, and low temperatures that weaken the immune system and make them more susceptible to illnesses like pneumonia.
The UGM operates an overnight men's shelter with a drop-in shelter during the day for people to dry off and get warm. During weather like this, they keep the drop-in shelter open as late as they're able. When they are forced to turn people away because they are at capacity, they offer tarps, coats, gloves, and covers for sleeping bags to keep people warm and dry. What can be done? However, Mucci reports that UGM is also dangerously low on winter equipment for both men and women. She says that a twoprong approach is needed to equip people for the weather and to create more space not just for shelters but for housing too. As of noon on October 27, the city did activate a youth/young adult EWR shelter which will be open over the weekend, but Mucci says that long-term solutions are needed in addition to temporary reactions to extreme weather. "It shouldn't be just for life-threatening cold," she says. Shelters are needed to protect from the elements that can make an already vulnerable population sick. Mucci says that a number of the UGM shelter users are ready to move into housing and have money saved up for deposits but that there isn't anything affordable available for them. "You can't call it a bottleneck if the bottle is full," she says of the situation. By Allie Turner

ancouver city council approved last week a historical document involving three First Nations that sets out a framework for the municipal government to right historical wrongs and recognize rights and title of Indigenous peoples. The city’s UNDRIP strategy, which was developed with the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations, is the first of its kind in Canada and recommends a wideranging set of actions that include returning lands to the nations and revenuesharing agreements. “It’s a great step towards reconciliation,” said Allyson Fraser, an elected Musqueam councillor, after witnessing council’s vote at city hall. “We’re moving forward as we move together as a group, as a family. We're going to make a positive change.” UNDRIP is the acronym for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2007. The provincial and federal
governments have since passed legislation to implement UNDRIP. 'Take this as a model' Fraser is a steering committee member of the UNDRIP task force, which also includes councillor Dennis Thomas of the TsleilWaututh, who was equally pleased with council’s decision. He hoped the document would influence other municipalities to develop similar agreements. “Hopefully, other municipalities in this province, in this country and around the world will take this as a model — take this as of how they can work with the Indigenous rights holders of where they operate,” said Thomas, whose Indigenous name is Whonoak. The week prior, the three nations and municipal government participated in a ceremony at the Museum of Vancouver to celebrate the achievement. The vote at council Tuesday was expected to be a formality, but did get pushback from Coun. Colleen Hardwick. Hardwick, who lost her bid for mayor Oct. 15, said she supports reconciliation “in principle” and thanked the task force for its work.

But she said the document was produced by “a highly selected group,” drafted internally and without public discussion. “Because the process was closed, I'm concerned the output suffers,” she said. “It recommends layers of special treatment without transparency.” Added Hardwick: “Explicit discrimination on the basis of race, which this report demands, is always and everywhere wrong. As we've been reminded by Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, it ends up badly for everyone.” Asked about Hardwick's comments, Thomas said: “Where my spirit is, and where my heart and my mind is right now, is just the vote and the passing of the UNDRIP task force [strategy] and just really knowing that our ancestors upstairs are smiling right now.” Mayor Kennedy Stewart's last meeting Mayor Kennedy Stewart, who was attending his last council meeting before Ken Sim takes his place Nov. 7, pointed out in his closing remarks that the city government only exists as a creation of the Crown. “But that's not the case with the three host nations in these territories,” Stewart said. “I feel in some ways fraudulent standing on this raised podium, speaking to nations on the other side of the glass [in the chamber]. In my mind, it’s the other way around — it’s that you are inviting us to work within our limited authority, as delegated by the Crown as to how these lands should be governed.” Added Stewart: “And I think that's something that's not always understood. That is something that should be a core part of future work — to let residents and citizens know exactly what the relationship is.” A budget to implement the strategy has not been determined, as council heard from city manager Paul Mochrie. Historically, budget deliberations at city hall occur in December. By Mike Howell

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
