Vancouver Folk Music Festival organizers (VFMF)
announcedonTuesday,Jan 17,thatinadditiontoits cancellingthe2023event,the festival'sBoardofDirectors has made the difficult decision to recommend the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society, which organizestheannualevent, be dissolved
However, the decision is not confirmed yet A membership vote will take place on Feb 1 to decide the festival's future
"It was a very, very tough decision for the Board to come to," VFMF board presidentMarkZuberbuhler tellsVI A "Butwewere facedwithasituationthat ourfinancialchallengeswere justtoogreattoovercome"
Thefestivalwaspostponed twiceduetoCOVID-19but wasabletoreturnin2022
Zuberbuhlernotesthatthat year'sfestivalwas"verywell attended"withplentyof musicalacts,butitdidnot "breakeven."
Theresultoflastyear's festivalhasbeeninfluentialin VFMFS'decisiontocancel thisyear'sevent
Zuberbuhlerexplainsthatby dissolvingthesocietynow, andnotholdinganother festival, theywillhave enoughfundstopayoffall outstandingdebtsandhave acleanclosure Headdsthat thiswouldalsoleaveroom forotherswhomaywantto startupthefestivalagain.
Followinglastyear'sfestival, VFMFalsofoundthatthe festivalenvironmenthad greatlychanged
"Thesetypesofliveevents becamemuchmorecostlyto produce,"saysZuberbuhler
He cites new expenses in thewakeoftheCOVID-19 pandemicasthemainreason fortheVFMFS'decisionto
cancelthisyear'sfestival
Manysuppliers, which providedequipmentrequired to host a festival, went out of business over the pandemic Simultaneously, the cost of equipment and necessary supplies has jumpeddramatically;things like audio equipment, stages, fencing, tents, and portable washrooms, lists Zuberbuhler
However, a newer, more challenging expense that came out of the pandemic was suppliers asking for upfront payments
"That became a big cash flow issue for us because we just don't have the cash and reserves to do that," Zuberbuhlerexplains "We needticketrevenueandwhat wegetafterthefestivalto helppayforallourbills."
Inherently, itisthe"greatgap betweenwhatweanticipate the revenue that we can generate [to be] and the actualexpenses"thatpushed thefestivaltotheunfortunate decision.
"Withtoday’spricing,we wouldrequireanadditional $500kinfundingevery yeartoproducethefestival, whichisunfortunatelynot realisticorsustainableforour organization,"writesVFMF in the announcement
As for a potential future return of the festival, Zuberbuhlerwants"tomake itsothatthat'sapossibility"
