The border between the United States and Canada can seem like a huge, monolithic thing cutting the land along the 49th parallel throughout B.C.
But,likealmosteverythingcreatedby humans,ithassomeoddbits.Ataminimum, therearesomeunexpectedquirks.Likehow whenonetakestheferryfromVancouverto southernVancouverIslandyoucrossinto, andoutof,aweirdwedgeoftheU.S outin theocean.
Here are five more local-ish quirks to the border
1.SumasandBlainehaveparts northofthe49thparallel
Sowhileweallthinkoftheborderas runningalongthe49thparallel(thelatitude as determined through mathematical coordinates), that's not quite accurate
The border was agreed upon as the 49th parallel for western Canada, but when it came time to survey and mark it with monuments,therewereafewhumanerrors, andsomeofthemonumentsarenorthofthe 49parallel,andsomearesouth.
WhenitcomestoSumasandBlaine,bothin Washingtonstate,therearepiecesofthetowns north of what many assume is the border.
2.Youcancrosstheborderat PeaceArchParkwithoutgoing throughabordercheckpoint
Beforeyoutryanddothis,keepreading. WhatpeopleconsiderPeaceArchParkis actuallytwoparks,anAmericanoneand
aCanadianone.Theywerecreatedto celebratethepeacebetweenCanadaandthe USAbackinthe1920sand30s,alongwith thearchitself.
Aspartofthatsymbolofpeace,visitorscan arriveoneithersideofthetwoparksand
crossoverintotheotheronewithoutgoing throughthenearbybordercrossing.During thepandemic,somefamiliesmetuphere, becauseofthisrule.
But,thatdoesn'tcarryveryfar.Therule onlycoverstheparksthemselves,andborder agentsmonitortheedgesoftheparkfor anyonetryingtosneakintoeithercountry illegally.
3.Therewasa'PigWar'overthe borderoffthecoast
Callingtheincidenta"war"isperhapsabit dramatic,butthat'showit'sbeendubbed. ItwasaconflictbetweentheyoungUSA andtheUnitedKingdombackin1859over theborderbetweentheGulfIslandsand SanJuanIslands.They'rethesamegroup ofislands,butsomearenowCanadianand othersAmerican.
In1859itwasn'tclearexactlywhichislands wereonwhichsideoftheborder,anda minorconflictbetweenaBritishsheep farmerandanAmericancustomsofficer grew,withmilitiasfrombothsidesshowing up.
OneBritishpigdiedandtheAmericansgot theirwaywiththeborder.
