Admission Professional Development and Training courses are designed for adults (17 years and over), unless otherwise stated for a specific course. Admission to younger students is by special arrangement. Please call our office. Are You On A Wait List? Register early to secure your seat. If you see the “On Wait List” comment on your Registration Statement, this means that a course is full and you have been “Wait Listed”. No payment is required to go on the “Wait List”. If a seat becomes available in this current semester, you will be contacted to process your registration and payment. Check Your Registration Statement Please read your Registration Statement receipt carefully. It confirms your registration and contains details of class time, location and room number. Please note your 9-digit Student Number in the upper left-hand corner and quote this Student Number when registering for future courses. Your Student Number allows us to correctly identify you and to ensure that your Student Record is complete. Course Cancellations and Changes Courses may be cancelled due to low enrolment or changed for various reasons. Every effort is made to notify you. Please provide your day, evening, and cellphone telephone numbers as well as your email address when you register, in case we need to reach you. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep your student record up to date. A full refund is issued if a course is cancelled. Refunds For most courses, fees are refundable if you withdraw at least seven days before the course starts. Extenuating circumstances may be considered for partial refunds. Please contact our office. Note that special refund deadlines are stated for some courses, and we are unable to issue refunds after those deadlines. Non-Refundable Fees: Some courses may have non-refundable Tuition, Application, and/or Material Fees. A full refund is issued if a course is cancelled. Arts & Culture Recognizing and Understanding First Nations Protocols

Native Drum Making

Developing an appreciation for First Nations cultures is an important part of living on Vancouver Island. In the company of our VIU Elders-in-Residence you will have the opportunity to practice some basic protocols such as greetings, introductions and thanking. The evening will include a discussion on the roles of the Elders in the community, their ways of working and general customs, offering a starting point to build respectful and culturally responsive relationships based on local First Nations cultural practices. A Walk in the Woods with a Medicine Woman Walk with First Nations Della Rice Sylvester from Cowichan Tribes as she shares her knowledge of plants as medicine. You will learn how different plants and herbs are used for food and healing. A booklet will be supplied. Della studied Medical Anthropology at UVic. She has worked with the Pacific Networking Association and BC Wild’s Leadership Initiative For Environment for several years. For Della, healing and improving health can be found in the roots, the leaves, the feel and the smell of the plants. In Della’s words, “Each plant has its own way, its own personality like each of us, and each of our children.”

Come and join Harold Joe, VIU Elder -in-Residence, who will teach you the art of making your own traditional First Nations drum. Over the course of the workshop, you will learn the history of the drum, be taught the proper respect for the drum and learn the basics of drum playing. Supplies are included. ACND 001 F15D01 (Cowichan) Harold Joe 1 session: Sat, Oct 17; 9am-1pm $185 + GST Harold Joe, Cowichan born, raised by maternal Musqueam grandparents, is a VIU Elder-in-Residence has worked in many roles including student support worker for School District 79 and a homeless support worker at the Breakfast club at Hiiy’yu Lelum. At VIU, Harold instructs Life Skills, Medicine Wheel and 12 Steps for Youth, carving, drum making and Hul’q’umi’num’ language. Harold is also a Commercial Carver of totems and a canoe builder. He understands Musqueam, Cowichan and Saanich Languages and when spoken to by Shun’chat’thun (Saanich) responds using Cowichan language.

A strategic plan provides direction and focus for an organization to achieve it goals, however this process is often misunderstood and under-utilized. Effective decision makers are individuals who are able to identify and choose the best approach for problem solving and take the appropriate action. In this two day course, you will be provided with the training and tools necessary to become a creative and logical decision maker by exploring a range of successful models and proven methods that are readily transferable on-the-job. WordPress Advanced is an advanced class that will explore how to properly setup a website; including navigation, custom permalinks and sitemaps. Trades Skills CARPENTRY Carpentry IP Upgrading Prepares carpenters for the Interprovincial (IP) exam. It relies on the practical experience of participants and reviews basic fundamentals, theoretical concepts, practices of the trade and familiarity with building codes.
