The project taught Hollenberg to work independently, further honed his research skills and ignited a passion for forestry. Hollenberg encourages younger students to work in a field they feel passionate about and seek out opportunities to apply for research awards such as the USRA. He also reminds students that it’s not necessarily top marks that will get your award application noticed. “Many other factors aside from marks are considered, so it’s important to work hard and get as much experience as you can in your field.”

In his final year at VIU, Hollenberg worked at the VIU woodlot as a work-op student. He graduated in June 2014 and plans to pursue a career in forestry.

M Letourneau – one class leads to love of chemistry

As a third-year Biology major, Nathan Hollenberg received an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) valued at $4,500. The award, topped up by VIU to $6,000, gave Hollenberg a summer job and the opportunity to gain hands on experience working with VIU faculty researcher Dr. David Gaumont-Guay. Together, their project involved researching the effects of biosolid application on carbon storage in trees and soil. Student – Research & Scholarly Activity 2013-14

One of M (Tess) Letourneau’s favorite things about chemistry is how immediately relevant it is to our world. “When you go outside, everywhere you look you see chemistry,” says Letourneau. “The Island is teeming with life and I love how I can apply my knowledge of chemistry simply by walking outside.” Letourneau’s passion for chemistry was fuelled in her first year when she enrolled in a chemistry class with VIU professor Dr. Erik Krogh. “I was immediately captivated by his active and fun approach to chemistry,” says Letourneau. Krogh hired Letourneau as a work-op student in the Applied Environmental Research Lab (AERL) during the 2012-2013 school year, and after her third year, encouraged her to apply for an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC). Letourneau was granted an award Vancouver Island University | 2

allowing her to work in the AERL with Krogh as her supervisor during the summer of 2013. She worked on a project to develop new ways to measure contaminants’ properties that can then be used to predict how contaminants are distributed in the environment.

It may have been a whirlwind finish to her four years at VIU, but Letourneau is grateful for every opportunity she’s had as an undergraduate student. “I was able to complete my Bachelor of Science because of three years of full-tuition scholarships that I received from VIU,” she says. Letourneau also received the one-year Macville Foundation Continuing Student Award (2011), the two-year Presidents' Choice Continuing Student Award (2012), and the Jagat Singh and Family Memorial Scholarship (2012). “I plan to travel for a year before deciding what’s next,” says Letourneau, “but I’ll have great memories of VIU wherever I go.”

“I had just completed my third year in the Biology program and so the USRA experience was invaluable,” says Letourneau. “It allowed me to develop much stronger independent research skills that a classroom environment simply can not provide. I was given a great deal of autonomy during my USRA, and determined my day to day research plans and conducted my research with an emphasis on independent research and skill development.” Krogh and M met twice weekly to discuss her research experiments, what the results meant and how they could apply to the greater goals of the USRA. At the end of her fourth year at VIU, in June 2014, Letourneau received her second USRA award giving her another summer of experiential learning and hands-on experience in the AERL. She was proud to be part of a 15-member team from the AERL presenting their research at a national chemistry conference in Vancouver, also in June. “It was the same week as my graduation ceremony,” says Letourneau. “I was at the conference for a few days, then came home to Nanaimo to graduate, and then went back to Vancouver to re-join the team.” Student – Research & Scholarly Activity 2013-14

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Health Professional Student Research Awards Students Selected by the VIU CIHR Awards Selection Committee The purpose of this program is to further strengthen clinical research by providing research training to health professionals and strengthen talent development. “Seniors with dementia can experience high levels of agitation or stress in certain environments or situations,” said Marsh. “The goal of our study was to explore the use of music as an effective therapeutic intervention to decrease this agitation.”

Personalized music project benefits seniors with dementia

Working with staff at Dover House, the students identified five seniors with dementia, and interviewed their family members and caregivers. They compiled playlists of the seniors’ favourite songs, and recorded individualized playlists on MP3 players provided by Dover House. “Based on our interviews, we chose songs that we knew would resonate with each resident,” said Haist. Dover House staff helped identify periods during the day or night when the residents experienced increased levels of agitation or stress, typically at mealtime or in the morning. Slowly, the Nursing students introduced the use of music to residents 30 minutes prior to these known periods of agitation. “We carefully observed and recorded the seniors’ responses and reactions to specific songs, and noticed immediate improvements,” said Marsh, including noticeable physical and mental changes in some residents.

Long-time Nanaimo resident Pat Barron (centre) and his wife Barbara are residents at Dover House care facility. Pat Barron was one of five residents who benefited from the music and memory research project implemented by VIU student researchers Roxanne Marsh (far left) and Tetiana Haist (back).

A personalized music project introduced at a Nanaimo care facility by Vancouver Island University (VIU) Nursing graduates is improving the quality of life for seniors with dementia. Roxanne Marsh and Tetiana Haist implemented the project at Dover House after receiving Health Professional Student Research Awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to study the effects of music on seniors with dementia. The study’s supervisor and VIU Nursing professor, Dr. Student – Research & Scholarly Activity 2013-14

“The music literally made some residents come alive,” said Haist. “Some tapped their toes or hummed along, and most were calmer and less agitated. Our findings showed this kind of intervention works best with seniors who had a close connection to music earlier in their lives, which is consistent with previous published research findings.” Holroyd said the use of music therapy as an intervention tool for residents with dementia can benefit staff in care homes. “Studies have shown that high agitation levels among seniors with dementia contributes significantly to staff burnout in care facilities,” she Vancouver Island University | 4

explained. “Often these situations lead to a high usage of chemical and physical restraints for residents with dementia, including antipsychotic medications. “Anything we can do to reduce agitation levels not only improves the residents’ overall quality of life, but helps caregivers and families as well.” In future, Dover House hopes to expand the personalized music project to new and existing residents. “We’ll pay more attention to learning about our residents’ musical tastes,” said Parsons. “We believe this can be a useful tool to improve the quality of lives of our residents. Staff and family members love it.” Dr. Holroyd is collaborating with VIU psychology professor Dr. Rachel Cooper on continuing studies into the personalized music project. Cooper introduced a Music and Memory project at Kiwanis Lodge in Nanaimo two years ago with some of her students, and also noticed positive results in residents with dementia.

Francine Emmonds – passionate about helping adult learners succeed Francine Emmonds recently completed the first year of the Master of Educational Studies program at the University of BC thanks to winning a major scholarship. “I was ecstatic to receive a $17,500 Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship Master’s Awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC),” explains Emmonds. “I received this exciting news just as I was graduating from VIU with a Bachelor of Arts degree, major in First Nations Studies and a minor in Romance Language and Culture.” Emmonds’ research area examines assessment practices for Vancouver Island Adult Basic Education (ABE) learners.

Student – Research & Scholarly Activity 2013-14

“I’m using qualitative methodologies and interview focus groups to develop a collective story from ABE learners on Vancouver Island about how they experience the assessment process,” she explains. “The students themselves will tell their stories. This research is important because for many adult learners, the assessment process is less of a stepping stone to higher education, and more of a stumbling block. Many ABE students are negatively impacted by the assessment process.” Originally from the prairies, Emmonds moved to Port Alberni with her young family. “Completing my undergraduate degree at a university on Vancouver Island close to home meant that my family and I enjoyed a better quality of life while I was at school,” says Emmonds. “VIU faculty were well organized and their courses were skillfully taught. If VIU offered a Master’s program in my field, I would be taking it.” Emmonds’ goal is to one day teach ABE, and she sees the Master’s project as excellent preparation. She also has experience working with adult learners as she was a tutor for more than 15 years in the academic, trades and diploma programs. “Adult learners continue to inspire and interest me,” she says. “They have so many varied histories and each student brings an individual perspective to the course material.” Emmonds is grateful to have received the SSHRC award and assistance from VIU’s Research and Scholarly Activity Office in filling out the application. “Receiving the SSHRC award made it financially possible for me to pursue my Master’s studies, and gave me a special learning opportunity to think about future studies. I’m excited to see where my future educational journey will lead.”

Graduate spins passion for hip hop into academic career When Niel Scobie graduated from VIU’s Digital Media Studies program in June 2013, he received a prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) award to pursue his Master’s degree. Scobie has since completed the first year of his Master’s of Music and Culture at Carleton University in Ottawa. His first eight months of the program have been extremely productive, presenting at six university conferences – Northampton and Sussex in the United Kingdom, and Boston and Syracuse in the United States, as well as two more at Carleton University. He was also a guest lecturer on hip-hop at Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. In April 2014, Scobie was awarded a $15,000 Ontario Graduate Scholarship, which he will apply to next year’s work on his thesis supervised by Dr. Jesse Stewart, a specialist in hip-hop, jazz, music of the African diaspora, and improvisation.

This is just up his alley, given that Scobie had a 20year career in Canada’s music industry before enrolling at VIU as a mature student in 2009. He worked as a recording engineer, producer, and DJ, playing clubs opening for acts like the Black Eyed Peas, The Roots and George Clinton. He also collaborated on recordings nominated for Junos in 2003 and 2005 for Rap Recording of the Year. “My instructors in VIU’s Media Studies program introduced me to new perspectives, underscored the importance of critical thinking, and opened my eyes to the possibilities of research, writing, and teaching. Attending VIU was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I still reference ideas from a first-year course taught by Doug Stetar.” As a VIU undergrad, Scobie received the CanWest Global Communications Scholarship and presented at Bishop’s University in Quebec in March of 2013. He was also a research assistant for four Media Studies faculty including Marian van der Zon, Debra Pentecost, Ravindra Mohabeer and Alanna Williams, and worked with them as well as Joy Gugeler and Robin Davies, on CHLY’s Be the Media weekly radio broadcast. What’s next? Scobie plans to pursue a PhD in Communications and would be thrilled to return to the west coast as a professor in Media Studies and Popular Music, to inspire his own students to pursue their passions. “Media Studies is field that complements virtually every discipline on campus,” he says. “Understanding how we use media, and how it uses us, is essential to being an active, aware participant in the ever-expanding media landscape.”

Scobie’s research will profile Jamaican-Canadian hip-hop musicians as examples of the cultural and musical hybridity in Toronto and other cities across the country.

Master’s research examines City’s cultural planning process Monica Shore has grown fond of Nanaimo since moving here from Montreal to pursue a Master's degree in 2012. Shore, who graduated in June 2014 from VIU’s Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management (MA-SLM) program, conducted a qualitative case study as part of her thesis. To pursue her research, she was awarded a $17,500 Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

employment within this area of the creative economy. Shore’s interest in the arts and the economy stems from her career as a professional jazz singer. “I knew first-hand how challenging it can be to make a living as an artist in Canada and I wanted to pursue a Master’s that would explore how funding and support for the arts works at the micro-level,” says Shore. “I was encouraged by the VIU faculty to make the degree my own. I had a lot of support and was guided by a few mentors that I'll never forget.” Shore recommends the MA-SLM program to selfdirected and innovative thinkers. She hopes to remain in Nanaimo and to work within the creative and knowledge-based sectors in event facilitation and coordination, research, consulting and, of course, jazz performance. Her thesis, entitled Sustainable Leisure Management in a Small Post-Industrial Canadian City, will be available in bound form at the VIU library and online.

Shore’s thesis examined the sustainability of the City of Nanaimo’s 2012-2014 cultural planning process and explored whether members of the arts and culture sector were adequately engaged by municipal leaders. She presented preliminary results of her research findings in June 2013 at the Nordic Geographers Meeting in Iceland. Now that her thesis has been accepted, she plans to seek opportunities for conference presentations and journal publications. While at VIU, Shore worked as second author on a federally funded SSHRC knowledge synthesis report with her supervisor, Dr. Nicole Vaugeois and undergraduate Bachelor of Tourism and Recreation Management student Nichola Evernden. The report looked at the state of Canada’s traditional craft trades sector and identified gaps in training and Student – Research & Scholarly Activity 2013-14

research and scholarly activity event held at VIU’s Nanaimo campus in March 2014. The project also netted Wetten the Trudy Sorenson Undergraduate Award for Scholarship from VIU’s Sports, Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) faculty. "This undergraduate project provided an amazing opportunity to combine my passion for environmental and physical education,” says Wetten, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, major in physical education and a minor in biology, at the June 2014 convocation. “Not only did I spend the semester doing what I love, which is hiking and birding, but I also gained skills in collecting data, using a GPS and website design. I hope my project inspires anyone at any age to get outdoors, and engage with the environment.” The website (www.itgnanaimoparks.webs.com) includes information about Buttertubs Marsh, Diver Lake Park, Jack Point and Biggs Park, Pipers Lagoon and Richard’s Marsh Park – all located in Nanaimo. Faculty member Dr. Guy Le Masurier, who supervised Wetten’s project, says it speaks to the interdisciplinary nature of VIU’s SHAPE program and the University’s strength in providing scholarly and experiential learning opportunities for students. “My colleague, Dr. Eric Demers from the faculty of Biology, played a significant role in facilitating Kim’s depth of knowledge in bird biology, and Kim’s passion for human movement and health has been nurtured in the SHAPE program. Kim is an excellent learner and a well-deserving recipient of these awards.”

Entitled “Steps, Sparrows and Smartphones: Modernizing Nanaimo’s Parks and Birding Information,” Wetten’s presentation about the new website won first place at CREATE, a year-end Student – Research & Scholarly Activity 2013-14

Dana Short – a ‘rising star’ in chemistry world When Dana Short arrived at VIU five years ago, she never imagined that one day she would present her research at national chemistry conferences. In June 2014, Short was part of a 15-member team from VIU’s Applied Environmental Research Lab (AERL) presenting at the Canadian Society of Chemistry conference in Vancouver. “It feels great to come full circle and celebrate the culmination of several years of research by presenting at a major conference,” says Short, a graduate of VIU’s Bachelor of Science program. “It was really exciting to have the opportunity to present and share the research I enjoy so much with scientists from across the country and around the world.” Short arrived at VIU from Nanaimo District Secondary School, not entirely clear on her future direction. She met chemistry professors Dr. Erik Krogh and Dr. Chris Gill, co-directors of the AERL on VIU’s Nanaimo campus. “She quickly become one of our rising stars,” says Krogh.

Together with other experienced student researchers, she used membrane introduction mass spectrometry (MIMS) on a project that helps researchers understand factors that control the rate at which contaminants can be degraded and/or formed in natural waters. She also conducted preliminary studies on biogenic markers of algae and sea lice in marine waters, which laid the foundation for AERL researchers to develop an underwater MIMS system capable of monitoring dissolved gases and larger organic molecules in coastal waters. Around the same time, Short attended her first major chemistry conference – the American Society for Mass Spectrometry conference with fellow students and faculty. “It was exciting, overwhelming, and largely over my head,” recalls Short, “but fantastic experience for an undergraduate student.” Short won a second USRA and continued her research on the underwater mass spectrometer during the summer of 2013. “The instrument came to our lab as a donation from industry. We heavily modified it, creating customized components for our specialized purposes,” she says. “Ultimately this instrument could be used in the field for real time adaptive sampling. For example, in the event of an oil spill, this device could be taken into the field, put into the ocean and dragged behind a boat to take measurements in real time.” The project gave Short a chance to expand her skills in welding and computer science – areas of interest she had not considered before.

As a third-year student, Short won a prestigious Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, allowing her to work in the AERL during the summer of 2012.

After graduating in January 2014, Short was hired full-time in the AERL to work as a research technician. She presented her research project at a celebration of undergraduate research at VIU in March 2014, and won top prize. In May, she presented her work at the Western Canadian Undergraduate Chemistry Conference

hosted by the University of Victoria, and won Best General Interest Presentation. “I feel fortunate,” says Short. “Working in the AERL with exceptional faculty, PhD candidates and graduate students has exposed me to a whole other world of science. All of this made my VIU experience more significant.” Through her research experience at VIU, Short fell in love with computer programming. In September 2014, she begins a Graduate Diploma Program in Computing Science at Concordia University in Montreal to expand her skill set even more.
