September Session (Sep 14 – Oct 26) How Green Is My Home?
While conventional beginner’s bridge classes tend to emphasize the bidding process, mini-bridge uses a short cut instead of bidding to establish the contract, after which the game is played in the usual way. Consequently, minibridge is an excellent preliminary stage in learning to play bridge; however, it is also an enjoyable, challenging, and increasingly accepted game in its own right. If you have tried bridge but found the bidding too difficult, or would like to learn or enhance your skill in this new game, come and join the fun!
Do you want to learn how to make your present or future home more energy efficient (or Green) and avoid possible problems? Custodians of sacred spaces as well as managers of community halls and apartment buildings will also find most, if not all, of the topics of significant benefit. This course will describe what is appropriate and where to start when contemplating a variety of reductions in domestic energy/utility use.
ELDS 037 F15Q01 (Parksville) 6 sessions: Thu, Sep 10-Oct 15; 9:30am-11:30am Fee: $40 + GST = $42 ELIZABETH MARSLAND is a relatively recent convert to bridge, understands well the confusion that faces many beginners, and hopes to offer a head start for eventual beginners’ bridge classes.
Thinking About Environmental Issues This course explores how environmental values are developed, how we are integral parts of the environment, how the economic system could be modified to help form a sustainable economy, and how and why energy use is being transformed. Global, national, provincial, and local environmental issues will then be discussed in terms of our changing needs and values and heightened environmental awareness. ELDS 036 F15N01 (Nanaimo) 6 sessions: Mon, Sep 14-Oct 26; 10am-Noon (No class Oct 12) Fee: $40 + GST = $42 ROGER SMITH was educated in Britain, Canada, and the USA. Moral Vegetarianism
NEW
Does morality today require us to be vegetarians? We will discuss and try to appraise the views of three leading thinkers (Peter Singer, Tom Reagan and Gary Francione) regarding the duties we owe to nonhuman animals. This will not be a doctrinaire treatment of the subject, for it is complex and many-sided, and no point of view enjoys an “easy” victory. September 25 Susan Juby, Creative Writing Department
The Truth and Nothing But the Truth? The line between truth and fiction can be blurry, and it certainly is in Susan Juby’s new novel, The Truth Commission. The award-winning author will discuss the creation of this illustrated young adult novel, which examines the complex issues of the truth in stories.
October 16 Gregory Bush, Music Department
A Journey in Jazz: From Inspiration to Performance Where does the musical idea come from? How is it developed and translated into notes on a page, and then interpreted in performance? This presentation -- and performance -- will follow the process of musical composition from an idea to our ears.
November 20 Allyson Anderson, First Nations Studies Department
“Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves”: The Contrapuntal Rantings of a Half-Breed Girl Stereotypes of Indigenous women abound in the colonial imaginations of North Americans, yet representations of the Métisse (women of mixed blood, and/or historic Métis) are rare. This presentation asserts that the few (mis)representations that do exist are rooted in Euro-settlers’ anxiety about their appropriation of Indigenous lands and potential lines of inheritance.
