NATALIE GATES MY VIU EXPERIENCE My internship as a writer with School District 68’s Communications department was great. It was part of a course in the Creative Writing/ Journalism program that helps us find an internship in our field. I was able to put the skills I’ve developed through my courses and working at the school paper, the Navigator, to work in a real-world environment and tell inspiring stories about the schools in the city. It also helped open my eyes to the different types of writing jobs that are available, such as in communications. NATALIE IS... • a hiker and yoga enthusiast • the Associate Editor of VIU’s student newspaper, the Navigator • dreaming of an exciting, fast-paced, creative career She is working toward a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in Political Studies and minor in Journalism.

STEVE REMPLE MY VIU EXPERIENCE One of the most memorable concepts I’ve learned in the Carpentry program is thinking through a project from start to finish before you start building, which will make the process go a lot smoother. I’ve also learned to ask for other people’s input on how to do something because everyone has a different way of thinking and working out problems. By doing this you can find ways that may help you work more efficiently. STEVE IS... • active in Campus Rec and sports • a lover of fishing and the outdoors • working in Nanaimo as a carpenter and construction site manager He graduated with his Carpentry Level 4 in June 2016.

HALEY ROBINSON MY VIU EXPERIENCE I’m from Brampton, Ontario, a short drive from Toronto. I heard about VIU from a neighbour and they had an amazing experience studying here. Making the switch to VIU was the best decision I’ve ever made. JIAHANG LI MY VIU EXPERIENCE I came from China. I wanted to know how BC sustainably manages their forest estate and learn about the differences between the industries from the two countries. VIU’s Forestry program has a long history and good reputation for coastal forestry. They’re well known for small-sized classes and interactive class environments. I benefited so much from this setting because my instructors and I got to know each other very well. All the individual help I received from them definitely made a huge difference. VIU cares about their students. This is really nice, especially when studying abroad is sometimes a little challenging for most international students. JIAHANG IS... • an avid camper and hiker • a composer and musician He graduated with a diploma in Forest Resources Technology in June 2016 and now works as an assistant forest engineer in coastal BC.

A CONVERSATION WITH VIU’S PRESIDENT DR. RALPH NILSON What do you remember about your first day at University? Wow, that’s a long time to think back to! I remember it being a wonderful time. I was nervous and excited – there is such a build-up of anticipation and you’re wondering what it is going to be like. Then, suddenly, you’re in the middle of it. Everything was new to me and I didn’t know anyone. I remember walking around the campus that first day and seeing all these new people and wondering how I was going to meet them all. I came away thinking to myself that was going to be my challenge — figuring out the best way I could engage with that vibrant campus community and meet as many people as possible.

What do you hope students will remember about VIU? I hope they will remember the warm welcome they received from the entire VIU community – faculty, staff and their fellow students. I also hope they will remember the fantastic ocean and mountain views from the campus. More importantly, I hope they will remember the supportive faculty who were able to challenge them to learn at a very deep level. I’ve heard from many students that this has been key to their VIU experience and it’s only possible because of our small class sizes and our dedicated faculty who take the time to really get to know their students and support them throughout their educational journey at VIU.

Any advice? Most importantly – build memories. I still remember my first degree and the many and varied experiences I had. I’m also still friends with many of the people I met during that time. It’s enriched my life in so many ways. So, I challenge each student to get out there and extend themselves to meet people, engage in the many activities this dynamic university community has to offer. It can be scary at times but I know from experience that you won’t regret it!

MATTER HERE

CAITLIN SMITH MY VIU EXPERIENCE The biology program at VIU has given me a different perspective on the world. Learning about the diversity of life on the planet and how and why living things are the way they are has given me an even greater appreciation for nature and has allowed me to see the world how it actually is. I believe I matter at VIU because, with such small class sizes, it allows you to actually get to know your professors, and you can tell how each one cares to see all of their students succeed. Caitlin graduated with a Bachelor of Science Major in Biology in June 2016.
