Welcome to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver. This guide is a business diirectory to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s westside. It is for both locals and visitors alike and new Vancouverites just love it. Vancouver’s westside officially extends from Ontario Street in the east, from Marine Drive in the south to Kits Beach in the north and west to and including UBC. The Canada Line skytrain runs below Cambie Street from YVR to downtown. There is talk about building one to UBC. There are two new community centres located on the westside, Hillcrest and Creekside Community Recreation Centres. I believe visibility is important. If you do not know about something how can you support it. The youth band movement started in Vancouver in 1933. By the sixties wonderful music programs were established in our high schools. They still thrive today and we want to tell you about them. Musical Moments is the tagline. One of the nicest aspects about Vancouver is its old heritage schools located on picturesque tree lined boulevards. Built in the early 20th c, they remain a constant reminder of our early heritage. This guide is more though than a business directory. We include heritage and stories from the ‘hood’ and people. Take it with you and visit the different neighbourhoods throughout the year. Tourists love it too! So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

BOOK
* BIOGRAPHY
My Greek Barber’s Diary by Christopher Best The heartwarming true story of how one man influenced so many over the course of his lifetime. Born in a small village in Militsa, Greece in 1935, George Chronopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and the Greek Civil War of 1944 - 1949. In the early days his village had no electricity yet his family lived like kings on their farm. His father decided that he would become a barber in Pilos, where he had moved as a young boy to be by the sea for health reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal. In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver. His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop. He opened his own hair salon, the Riviera on Seymour, in 1964. It wasn’t long before he was established in Vancouver. (continued see p 88)

32 Mary Ann Buis
Finding inspiration in clean architectural lines and nature’s interplay of textures and colours. Mary Ann integrates these elements into her pieces by combining juxtaposing materials like brilliant cut diamonds with rough Aquamarine. Another aspect of her designs is her desire to work with gemstones that aren’t commonly known, such as Spinel or Chrysophrase.
Andrew Costen
Andrew discovered his calling for jewellery design at an early age, and at the age of 16 he began training to become a world class goldsmith. Having won numerous National and International award competitions, including the 2013 International Spectrum Awards, it seems that this dedication has paid off. Known for his unusual combinations of gemstones and metals, Andrew’s pieces range from simply classic to lavishly ornate.

Cathie Easdown has seen first-hand the effects of cancer and its treatment.
Her mother and aunt battled the disease, and her cousin has recently been diagnosed. Inspired by their journey, the West Vancouver mother of two says she opened her store Compassionate Beauty in Vancouver last year to provide a comforting environment and one-stop shop for various products and services, such as masectomy bras, breast prosthesis, swimsuits, yoga wear, night wear, and wigs, as well as non-invasive pedicures and manicures. Featured services include Lymphatic massage by a registered massage therapist and medical tattooing, such as eyebrow tatoos for people who have lost their hair. Easdown calls her space an oncology boutique spa, and notes that it is specifically designed for those undergong cancer treatment, paying particular attention to their unique needs. “I’ve had a couple of clients that have come in and they just don’t feel comfortable going to their usual spas while they’re undergoing treatment. They find it much more comfortable in an environment such as this,” she explains. Easdown is a former mental health nurse who decided to open her franchise after hearing from her cousin in Calgary about the spa in that city that provided a comforting place for her. The Vancouver location is open to everyone, not just those undergoing cancer treatment. Working with clients has been rewarding because “when they walk out the door they feel great,” says Easdown. “If we can help people get through this (then) that is extremely rewarding for me.” Rosalind Duane, North Shore News

BOOK
* BIOGRAPHY
An Insider’s Story of the
Rise & Fall of Canadian Airlines by Sid Fattedad The demise of Canada’s other national air carrier, Canadian Airlines International in 1999 was heart wrenching to employees, unions, management and to the citizens of Canada. Confusion and stories abound as to what actually happened. This book sets the record straight as the man behind the employee rescue plan to save the airline decides to tell his story. Sid Fattedad emigrated to Vancouver from Hong Kong in 1968 to play drums in a rock and roll band, the Five Man Cargo. Having worked as an articling student in Hong Kong, the lustre of the music industry soon wore off and he found himself working as a junior accounting clerk for Canadian Pacific Airlines. It wasn’t long before Canadian Pacific became CP Air, the planes were painted orange and Sid became senior clerk of corporate accounting. The rising cost of oil in the 1970s, labour unrest and the acquisition of new planes made running an airline hard on the bottom line and the accounting department was always in the forefront. It was work all week, socialize at the pubs on the weekend with a tightly knit group called the ‘boat crew,’ who would often travel to England commandeering river boats on the canals of the Norfolk Broads, visiting pubs along the way. Sid became known as Kato. After receiving his CGA Sid was promoted to Travelling Auditor where he learned first hand CP Air’s overseas operations. The ‘night of the long knives, the Kremlin and ‘The General,’ all play into the story as the 1980s saw a sea of change at CP Air… Colussy fails to purchase Wardair and Sid is named to the board of TransPacific Tours Limited a little known but highly profitable subsidiary company. Don Carty purchases Nordair and Sid becomes Comptroller of CP Air. A backwards take-over. Carty attempts to purchase PWA but is thwarted by the FASB and PWA purchases CP Air. The Kitsilano Showboat The aim of the Kitsilano Showboat Society is to do something as a community project, to bring enjoyment to residents and tourists, and to encourage amateur talent. It is the only project of its kind, to our knowledge, that is operated on a volunteer basis and at no cost to the taxpayer. 1935 was an ideal time to begin such a program. Showboat’s founder, the late Bert Emery, passed away in 1977, and shortly thereafter the last of the founding members died. Entertainers, unable to get jobs, were willing to display their talents whenever they could, whereas people eager for entertainment, but unable to pay for it, provided an appreciative audience. In 1936, Vancouver’s Golden Jubilee year, our first stage was built by the Jubilee Committee. No dressing rooms were permitted and it had to be torn down at the end of the sea son, and sold for $25. Temporary seats which were built on the top of the bank also had to be torn down. Featured in the celebrations were swimmers, divers (from an 80-foot tower), dancers and singers from Hawaii, and the RCMP Musical ride. In 1937, the Park Board granted permission for a new stage to be built; this was accomplished by a group of volunteer workers. Only a flat deck was allowed, again no dressing rooms, so a waterproof piano box was used instead for many years. The first permanent stage, built in 1948, was just a cement slab. The plywood dressing rooms had to be erected at the (continued on page 46)
46 beginning of every season and removed each fall. This stage represented a flower garden with potted shrubs and hanging flower baskets, which were on loan to us by the Vancouver Parks Board. In 1954 it was converted to represent a Mississippi Riverboat and that theme has been used ever since. Permanent dressing rooms were built as well as bleachers. In 1978, Kitsilano Pool, the largest outdoor tidal pool (in front of which the Showboat is situated), underwent major renovations to build a large outdoor heated pool. Due to construction of the pool we were unable to use the Showboat stage and, for that summer, we presented programs on the beach. 1982-83 saw major renovations to the Showboat. We added large dressing rooms, washroom facilities, and had a backdrop facelift retaining the riverboat theme. Showboat, which was incorporated as a Society in 1987, would not exist today without the tireless efforts of Captain Bea Leinbach who spent many hours reading the blueprints and convincing the Vancouver Parks Board that the stage should remain on the edge of the Kitsilano Pool. We still operate three summer months with a concert every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, weather permitting, as well as band concerts scheduled for various Sundays. For special occasions, such as the International Symphony of Fire, we arrange extra shows to coincide with their program. We stage 50 to 60 different shows per season. This means that 3,000 to 4,000 entertainers volunteer their service and an estimated 1/2 million residents of Vancouver and visitors from all over the world attend the concerts. The Naam is a very busy vegetarian full-service restaurant located in the heart of Vancouver’s Kitsilano district. It is the city’s oldest natural foods restaurant, with over 30 years of cooking tradition. The Naam is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We close only on Christmas day. The Naam is “funky”--wooden tables, an old wooden floor, and casual decor. In the winter we burn through about six cords of wood in our fireplace. In the summer we have a beautiful enclosed (or open as weather permits) garden patio--an extremely popular place on warm balmy evenings. We have live music every night from 7-10 pm - mostly blues, folk and jazz. We take reservations for parties over 6 people during the week with 48 hours advance notice. We DO NOT accept reservations on Friday evenings and weekends. A 15% pre-authorized gratuity is required, and tables are held only 15 minutes. There is only one Naam. Years ago we had to decide whether to get bigger- or better. We decided to just get better. We look forward to seeing you.

The Comic Shop Ken Witcher and I decided to open up a store that sold all of the new comics in one location to make collecting comics easier. We didn’t know the state of the comics industry at the time, just that we loved comics, loved collecting them and sharing them with friends and that a lot of other people collected comics. We thought that maybe we could sell enough comics to people to earn a living. 31 years, and I still enjoy what I do for a living. But I couldn’t have done it alone, and I’d like to thank a few of the people who have helped me to reach this milestone.

Musical Moments
Lord Byng Secondary School Lord Byng Secondary School is considered the only Fine Arts School in Metro Vancouver. The band program today is run by Scott Maclennan. The biggest program Scott has had has been: one beginning band, two junior bands, two intermediate bands, a senior wind ensemble, three jazz bands and two symphony orchestras. His two colleagues: Odette Kurth and Lisa Lan Ledingham have a string program and a choral program respectively. The music program at Lord Byng goes back to the early sixties with Jim Kirk followed by Pete Stigings. Dave Berger was there in the seventies then followed by Scott MacLennan. Under conductor and teacher Odette Kurth, Lord Byng’s string ensembles have won over twenty-five Kiwanis Festival Gold Awards (Provincial Competition) and three Gold Awards from the National Competition MusicFest. In 2008, the Senior Honor Orchestra won the trophy for first place in the North West Orchestra Competition in Portland, Oregon, and in 2010, both Junior and Senior Honor Orchestras received gold standing in the Heritage Music Festival in Seattle, Washington. The Senior Honor Orchestra were invited to compete in the 2012 American
72 String Teachers Association National Orchestra Festival in Atlanta,[7] where they placed second against advanced American school orchestras. She took them to New York in 2013 and won the distinction of being the top string orchestra in North America. In 2012 they took second place in that same contest. Scott’s first big trip with the Lord Byng band was in 98-99. They went to California because that is where Jon Stromquest took his bands. Jon was Scott;s band director in Powell River. He always went to Disneyland. He figured if it was good enough for Jon it was good enough for Scott. They went for five days. In 2000-01 they went to Hawaii for a week. In 2003 it was Austria and Germany for 10 days. They were down around the Munich area of Germany. In 2005 they went to New York for the first time. He took their symphony orchestra with them. In 2004 Scott started their first symphony orchestra. He taught it on his own up to 2010. Then Odette took it over. Last year (2015) he is doing it by himself again. Before that they each conducted a couple of concerts a year. In 2007 they went to Italy. They had the experience of a lifetime playing in Vivaldi’s church in Venice. It was also a highlight of Scott’s career. That trip was for ten days as well. In 2009 it was off to the UK, England, Wales and Scotland. They gave eight performances in ten days (Covent Garden to the Millenium Centre in Cardiff). They also went to Edinburgh castle. In 2011 they were off to China, Beijing and Shanghai again for ten days. In 2013 it was back to Europe and Vimy Ridge, Belgium and France. Lord Byng played a major role at Vimy. That was the first trip the choir came along on. They now try to combine the choir and band trips so those students who are in both do not have to pick one or the other. And 2015 it was Carnagie Hall. An amazing program!

76 Red Burrito opened its doors in January 2006 at the heart of Vancouver’s Italian District – Commercial Drive & East First avenue. Providing unique Burrito-Taco serving with smile at an affordable price, Red Burrito quickly became a wellknown local Mexican. The food always been made fresh daily in-house using high-quality ingredient. Over the years the concept remained unchanged: Keep it simple and offering real items. Red Burrito is today serving 5 locations in Vancouver and North Vancouver. Still continuing serving you great food at a good price. Shoppers Drug Mart Built on a foundation of professional expertise and personal service, Shoppers Drug Mart has been meeting Canadians’ health care needs for over 50 years. What was once a small pharmacy in Toronto has grown into an organization of over 1,132 stores from coast to coast, becoming an indelible part of the lives of Canadians, young and old. Yet despite our growth, we have never forgotten our origins. We have always remained true to our belief that the personal satisfaction of each and every customer is at the root of our success - and it can only be ensured by the commitment of people who realize that success is built one customer at a time.
Bakeries at UBC The first bakery you will see once on campus is located in UBC Village and is called Oven Fresh Bakery. Prices are great and everything is made on site. Lots of variety as well. The next (almost bakery) is located in the SUB building. They have wonderful chocolate cupcakes and big gooey cookeis with lots of chocolate. I try to indulge whenever I am in the neighbourhood (which isn’t too often, so it is okay). The other place that has baked goods is located in the new library complex. It is alittle more upscale but extremely good and offers a healthy selection.

80 On 10th Avenue there are several Asian fast food places and a couple of good confectionary stores for ice cream on a hot day. A walk past the pool and the Student Union building will bring you to the UBC Bookstore where you can browse forever. On the way back stop in at the Student Union Building (SUB) and see what is happening. Usually during the weekdays you might find vendors set up selling jewellery, posters and other odds and ends. There is a good cookie stop and a great pizza place in the SUB as well if you are getting hungry. Back outside, a visit to the UBC Aquatic Centre, whether for a swim or just to have a look is a good idea. This indoor pool has an interesting design and is a great swim. In the summer you can either go for a swim in the outside pool back on University Boulevard or head inside to the Aquatic Centre.

86 Careville is a very smart concept in medical care. In this fresh new clinic model, physicians, naturopaths, nutritionists, and pharmacists all work together under one roof, offering a more integrated, responsive approach to patient health. The approach seeks to bridge the gap between conventional and alternative medicine. It also fosters a long term, meaningful relationship between staff and patients, right here in Wesbrook. There are so many reasons why an integrated medical clinic and pharmacy makes sense for everyone. For one, having a pharmacist and your physician consult closely with one another minimizes minor miscommunications between the pharmacy, patients, and doctors – an all too common occurrence. With pharmacists and doctors under the same roof, any questions can be cleared up right away, sometimes avoiding serious problems. Careville Health at Wesbrook opened its doors in March of 2013 in the beautiful Wesbrook Village, nestled in between Pacific Spirit Park and the University of British Columbia. We are very excited to be serving the community with excellent patient care!

The Life & Times of the Legendary
Mr. D by Christopher Best This sixth and final book on Arthur Delamont and his Vancouver Boys’ Band is also the first in a series on the History of the Youth Band Movement in Canada. The movement started here in Kitsilano in 1933 when the boy’s won the juvenile band championship of the world at the Chicago World’s Fair. All Vancouver became juvenile band crazy and bands sprouted up everywhere. Everyone wanted their sons/ daughters to play in a band. Arthur started no less than seven himself in and around Vancouver. As he began taking trips with his band to the Old Country (England), in 1934, the boys travelled by train across Canada stopping and playing along the way. Soon the places they visited all wanted youth bands of their own spurred on by the fine playing of his boys and their gentlemanly manner. Arthur’s boys went on to have bands of their own and teach in the schools. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that band became accredited in the public schools in B.C. due to the fine example and hard work of many dedicated music educators. Jump ahead to 2014. Ministers and trustees are cutting the arts programs like never before. Band in the school curriculum is threatened, branded as a frill and easy pickings for ill-informed public officials who know nothing of the efforts it took to establish band in the curriculum in the first place. This book (and subsequent books), set the record straight. They tell the story of how band got into the public school system. The next book in the series is titled: Greater Vancouver School Band Programs from the 1930s to the Present. It records/documents the fine band programs that have and still exist in the public schools today. These books will preserve forever the band legacy of not only Vancouver but eventually of Canada.
93 By the mid 40s, Mr. D had started no less than six school bands, from which he selected the best for his Kitsilano Band, they were the West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Grandview, Point Grey Junior High School and the General Gordon school bands. As more and more bands began to spring up in the school system, he eventually relinquished control of all but his Kitsilano Boys Band. Over the course of fifty years his band won 200 championships, made 14 European tours and attended 5 world fairs. The tours lasted from 2 to 5 months and three concerts a day were normal routine. While most bands would travel and perform only a handful of concerts on tour, his boys were hired out to perform engagements like professionals at seaside resorts through-out Britain, often booked well in advance for their next tour. His success story is filled with humor, excitement, tragedy and love. In 1914 he was a member of the Territorial Staff Band of the Salvation Army, on board the Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence, with a loss of over 1000. In 1939 he was in England with his boys when war was declared and had to sneak out under the cover of searchlights and balloons, zigzagging home down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic, trying to avoid German U-boats. His legacy is the thousands of boys who passed through his organization and the lessons they learned. Often their sons went on to play with him as well. And over the years they became the who’s who of the Canadian music establishment where his boys filled the first chairs in symphony orchestras. www.warfleetpress.wordpress.com BELOW: c1933 The band at the Chicago Worlds’ Fair

Sid Fattedad former VP of Canadian Airlines and the man who spearheaded the employee buy-out plan back in the day finally tells the inside story as to what actually happened causing Canada to lose its second national carrier. He cut the hair of most CEO’s and business leaders in downtown Vancouver for five decades. His tales from the chair are hilarious, heart-warming and lovingly told.
