Welcome to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver. This guide is a business diirectory to the neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s westside. It is for both locals and visitors alike and new Vancouverites just love it. Vancouver’s westside officially extends from Ontario Street in the east, from Marine Drive in the south to Kits Beach in the north and west to and including UBC. The Canada Line skytrain runs below Cambie Street from YVR to downtown. There is talk about building one to UBC. There are two new community centres located on the westside, Hillcrest and Creekside Community Recreation Centres. I believe visibility is important. If you do not know about something how can you support it. The youth band movement started in Vancouver in 1933. By the sixties wonderful music programs were established in our high schools. They still thrive today and we want to tell you about them. Musical Moments is the tagline. One of the nicest aspects about Vancouver is its old heritage schools located on picturesque tree lined boulevards. Built in the early 20th c, they remain a reminder of our early heritage. This guide is more though than a business directory. We include heritage and stories from the ‘hood’ and people. Take it with you and visit the different neighbourhoods throughout the year. Tourists love it too! So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

26 Robinson Lighting & Bath Centre We are constantly adding new products to our showrooms across the country, and what you see in-store is only a fraction of what’s available to you through Robinson Lighting & Bath Centres. Talk to our showroom professionals for the latest news in current trends and innovations. Don’t just add light to your home - add the right light. Properly designed lighting sets the mood in a room and can make the difference between a cold, impersonal feeling and a warm and inviting space. At Change, we respect your natural beauty. That’s why our lingerie doesn’t dictate how your body should look or promise a whole new you. What it will do is give you a variety of styles in a fit that feels just right. It’s all about feeling beautiful. So feel free to express yourself. To explore the different facets of your femininity. And the woman within. This is the philosophy behind Change and the key to our success. When we design our lingerie in Denmark and manufacture at our own factories in China, our way of thinking is that every part of the bra should support the best of every woman. And she should experience the best quality for the best price.

The Running Room is proudly a family-owned company. It originated in 1984 out of founder John Stanton’s wish to purchase quality running shoes from someone knowledgeable about the sport. New to the sport of running, John had a thirst for knowledge as well as a desire to buy the right product. This entrepreneurial retailer decided to fill a niche in the marketplace by opening a small one-room store in the renovated living room of an old house in Edmonton, hence the name, “Running Room.” The concept was highly successful, and the stores have since expanded to over 114 locations across Canada and the United States.

De Dutch Pannekoek House John Dys opened his first place in 1970. He called it the “Frying Dutchman” and his hamburger sales became famous for predicting elections. He called them “Hamburger Polls.” On a trip home to the Netherlands, his father took him to a traditional Dutch restaurant where pannekoeken are served for lunch and dinner. Not breakfast. John decided then and there he would bring the pannekoek back to Canada. And so, the first “Original Dutch Pannekoek House” opened July of 1975 on the corner of Knight Street and 25th Avenue in Vancouver. This location is still in operation today. Pip Squeak Pups Cozy, comfortable, and friendly. We create a safe environment where dogs are encouraged to engage in healthy, balanced play as well as rest and relaxation. Dogs are members of our family. Our best friends. We want them to be loved constantly, and live fun and fulfilling lives. We never want to leave them home alone for longer than a few hours, and especially not in the confines of a cage. You best friend becomes our best friend for life! To provide a safe and cozy place for dogs to roam freely, void of cages or unnecessary restrictions. A place where they can be themselves, have fun, play to their hearts content, nap and enjoy the company of their new friends.

Kearney Funeral Services has been serving Vancouver and the Lower Mainland for over 100 years. Founder Thomas P. Kearney entered the funeral business for love, hoping to be introduced to the beautiful young opera singer, Catherine, who he admired for helping her mother with grieving families at their local church. Within a few years, he was offered sole ownership of the funeral business and made a commitment to carry it on. Soon, Thomas and Catherine were married, raising three children and active partners in their funeral work. Today, their grandchildren and great-grandchildren continue the family business from three locations - 450 West 2nd Avenue in Vancouver; 219 6th Street in New Westminster;, and #1015772 176th St. in Cloverdale. Of the 15 Canadian funeral homes once located in the City of Vancouver, Kearney’s is the last to remain Canadian and familyowned. We greatly value our reputation of compassionate care and commitment to personalized service to our families. As we enter our fourth generation of service to the bereaved, we are honoured to be entrusted with the care of our communities in their greatest time of need.

32 What is a Cataract? A cataract occurs when the naturally clear lens inside the eye (responsible for focusing light) becomes cloudy or opaque and blocks light from entering the eye. The result is blurry, hazy or obstructed vision. People with cataracts often have difficulty seeing at night or in low light conditions. The changes in the lens can also change your eyeglass prescription making you more nearsighted or producing astigmatism. If you start to remove your glasses to read when previously you needed them for reading this could be a sign you are developing cataracts. Cataracts are commonly associated with aging and a high amount of sun exposure over your lifetime. If during your childhood and young adulthood, you were exposed to a lot of sun and did not wear Sunglasses with 100% UV protection, you could be at risk to develop cataracts.

36 Allison opened Clementine for hair in 2006. Her vision was to create a salon that was inviting, comfortable and a place where clients feel at ease. A little less techno music, a little more calm. She takes hair very seriously... but not herself. Michelle joined Clementine For Hair in 2007 and has been an integral part of the team ever since. She’s decided that blondes have more fun. Jennifer moved from Toronto to Vancouver 5 years ago and her friends call her JP. She loves fuzzy peaches and long walks on the beach. Seriously. Miles likes retro style and sweet fades. Don’t let his tattoos fool you, this guy’s only in one gang and that’s the Clementine For Hair Gang (it’s not a gang it’s just us). Musical Moments

38

‘The Golden Age of Metro Vancouver Youth Bands’

Eric Hamber Secondary School Ernie Colledge started the music program at Eric Hamber in 1962. “We did a lot of smaller trips to Calgary and into Washington. In Calgary we did a couple of exchanges. When I was at UBC doing my Master’s degree I met a fellow teacher Glen Farkas. He taught at Henry Wisewood in Calgary. Glen was part of the Farkas family of musicians. When I was at Gladstone later, we did a couple more trips to Calgary. I always made sure our kids were billeted. I felt it made the trips more interesting for them if they met their peers. I never took the kids on long bus trips through BC. We always flew to Calgary. We did take the bus into Washington to Seattle, Bothell and Auburn but those were shorter bus rides. There were lots of fundraising and noon hour rehearsals. We also helped raise money for the rest of the school as well. Expo 70 in Osaka, Japan would have been the biggest trip I took them on. There were only three bands endorsed by the BC government to go to Osaka, Pete Stigings at Magee, Dave Dunnett at Oak Bay High School and us.” Today the program is still one of the best around anywhere. Past directors Mary Ellenton, Chris Robinson, Tom Koven and today Nick Francis and Les Nerling have kept the tradition alive. Further along at 16th you will find a De Dutch Restaurant and a Mephisto’s Pet Care as well as Max’s Bakery & Delicatessan located at 16th & Oak Street. Maxs’ is a great place to stop in for a sandwich or a salad or a bakery item or two. The neighborhood has some great old growth Maple trees growing on the boulevards. Further down Oak at 12th is Vancouver General Hospital. Wild Birds Unlimited use to be in this neighbourhood but it has moved over to Broadway at Birch Street.

The Venerable Max’s Deli and Bakery has been there since I lived in the area in 1969 and attended VCC then at 12th and Oak Street. Also, there is a Sunshine Market next door to Max’s. Across 15th avenue on the same side is Oakville Laundromat which looks quite new. Behind the laundromat is a Pharmassave and Uno Medical Clinic. Moving down Oak Street we next encounter Biiru Bin Japanese Pub. This is a sushi restaurant with local beers on tap. Quick service, friendly staff, great food! A great place for a quick bite on the way home. in Japanese, “bin”, pronounced “bean” or like an Ontarian “been”, means bottle. B-bin = beer bottle. Next store down is Physio Room. Across Oak Street there is a Scrub Department store which looks like uniforms and a dry cleaners. As well, there are several other smaller stores.

57 Hello, I am Kanako. I grew up in Japan in a traditional Japanese family. My father is a carpenter. He designs and builds traditional Japanese homes. My mother is a professional hairdresser. Growing up with two artists, creating by hand is in my nature. Before I became a hairdresser, I worked as an esthetician in Japan. One day, I was applying makeup for a client. She was beautifully dressed, and her makeup was perfect, but something was missing. Her hair didn’t look good! At that moment, I knew I wanted to study hairdressing. Now I am happy to have my own hair salon in Vancouver. bed - Trends come and go but attractive, well-made products stand the test of time. We’ve been making sheets in Vancouver since 1999 and we like to think that reflects well on us. People are always asking us when we’ll open a store in their town, but to be honest, that’s just not part of our plan. Small is ok. Local works for us. We just want to be good at what we do, have jobs we enjoy, and to get to meet a lot of the people that benefit from our efforts. If you are lucky enough to meet us in the store, the person helping you may even have made some of the items you are considering. We think you should know the people you are in bed with.

Musical Moments

Kitsilano Secondary School HISTORY: Kitsilano Secondary School, named after Chief August Jack Khahtsahlano (a Musqueam First Nations leader) was founded in 1917, when overflow classes from King Edward High School were moved to Cecil Rhodes School; however, the first temporary wooden structures built in 1920, at Trafalgar and 12th Avenue, marked the true beginning of Kitsilano High School. The building we now call home opened its doors in 1927. The very first youth band in Vancouver was at Kitsilano in 1930 when Arthur Delamont moved his boys over from General Gordon Elementary School. It was short lived when he moved them back to GG in 1932. During the sixties Kitsilano had one of the two strongest music programs in Vancouver under George Wardlaw. In the seventies Dave Berger came on board and ran a great program for many years until he retired. Today the music program is run by Kim Holland. CONTACT: www.kitsilano.vsb.bc.ca, 2550 West 10th Avenue.

60 Our wines are from all around the world (and all around the province) but our heritage is pure Kitsilano—family-owned and community-minded. We were one of the first private wine stores in B.C. when we started with a limited inventory in a modest space back in 1986, and we’re proud to say we’ve grown up in the neighborhood. At the Broadway International Wine Shop, you’ll find something for everyone and every budget. You’ll find exotic specialty wines. You’ll find innovative releases from boutique producers. You’ll find the right-priced bottle for that backyard barbeque. You’ll find new discoveries at our weekend tastings. One thing you won’t find, though, is an attitude. Because to us, good wine is not about snobbery—it’s about sharing a passion for all the good things in life that are worth raising a glass to.

Estd 1986. Local, family owned wine shop. We carry domestic & international wines, bubbly, cider and sake.

He built the Club on traditions and values of generosity, sportsmanship, work ethic, honour and love of gymnastics. Read about our Mission, Vision and Values. Parthenon Supermarket is the best small market on West Broadway, and quite possibly Vancouver. If you’re looking for any fine cheeses, deli meats or olives, I seriously doubt if you could find better value. I remember when I first moved to Vancouver five years ago I bought some medium gouda cheese at Capers for something like $35/kg, and later stumbled upon Parthenon which was selling aged gouda for around $22/kg, and really, my mind still marvels at the markup I paid for a lesser cheese from Capers. I don’t know the price difference now but I do know that the aged gouda at Parthenon is still under $30/kg, and undoubtedly still a better value. A Greek market which also offers quick bites at its deli counter. Some of the best deals in town on olive oil, feta cheese, figs, deli meats, and pita. Perfect for a quick stop prior to a picnic to get all the supplies. They carry Beyond Fair Trade Certified, co-operative operated sustainably farmed, shade grown, organic and or local products as much as possible.

BOOKS

* BIOGRAPHY

LEFT: c1934 The band in England on its first British tour. Photos: Warfleetpress.com

“By Jove What A Band” General Gordon Elementary School is located on Bayswater Street two blocks north of Broadway. It was here in the little yellow school house on the school grounds that the world famous Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band was founded in 1928 by Arthur W. Delamont. Band rehearsals soon moved into the school basement when the band got bigger and continued there through fifty years of unparalleld success until the band folded in 1974. Arthur Delamont, who founded the Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band in 1928, was a pioneer in the field of music education of our youth. He was the first to travel extensively with youth bands and to show that youths between the ages of 11 and 19 could be developed into a first class musical organization. He did this by taking first place in virtually every festival he entered, starting with the Victoria Provincial Championship in 1931. He went on to win the National Junior Band Championship title in Toronto that same year. Then in 1933, the Worlds Junior Band Championship title in Chicago. His wins were not marginal wins but without hesitation as one adjudicator remarked in Chicago. By Jove what a band’ and “there was little doubt that they totally outclassed their nearest competition,” were other adjudicators remarks. In 1934, he began taking his band to England, where he took first place in the West of England music festival

67 and again in 1936 at the Crystal Palace where his boys beat out 35 adult bands to take the coveted Cassells Challenge Shield By the mid 40s, Mr. D had started no less than six school bands, from which he selected the best for his Kitsilano Band, they were the West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Grandview, Point Grey Junior High School and the General Gordon school bands. As more and more bands began to spring up in the school system, he eventually relinquished control of all but his Kitsilano Boys Band. Over the course of fifty years his band won 200 championships, made 14 European tours and attended 5 world fairs. The tours lasted from 2 to 5 months and three concerts a day were normal routine. While most bands would travel and perform only a handful of concerts on tour, his boys were hired out to perform engagements like professionals at seaside resorts through-out Britain, often booked well in advance for their next tour. His success story is filled with humor, excitement, tragedy and love. In 1914 he was a member of the Territorial Staff Band of the Salvation Army, on board the Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence, with a loss of over 1000. In 1939 he was in England with his boys when war was declared and had to sneak out under the cover of searchlights and balloons, zigzagging home down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic, trying to avoid German U-boats. His legacy is the thousands of boys who passed through his organization and the lessons they learned. Often their sons went on to play with him as well. And over the years they became the who’s who of the Canadian music establishment where his boys filled the first chairs in symphony orchestras. BELOW: c1933 The band at the Chicago Worlds’ Fair

78 Our South Granville Neighbourhood The variety and quality of work shown in our galleries reflects Vancouver’s sophisticated cultural and ethnic diversity. Contemporary photo based Art and BC Impressionism can be enjoyed in the same block. Canada`s most prestigious Auction House is at home here, hosting an annual auction that draws an international clientele. Rare Asian antiques play against modern sculpture or Art Nouveau bronzes. Huge cast resin bowls in vibrant colors live comfortably next to Chinese floor vases. Eighteenth century Russian oil paintings transport the viewer to another world. In short, we live up to our reputation as a cultural destination unique on the West Coast. In addition to the fine art houses, a number of specialty stores carry unusual furniture, artifacts and carpets. While not strictly speaking galleries, these merchants, scour the globe to find unique items made by traditional craftspeople and artisans. They bridge the gap between gallery and furniture store, providing a depth and richness to shopping for the home that is truly unique in Vancouver. www.southgranville.info From headphones to complete systems, Commercial Electronics offers the finest high-end audio and video solutions and we have the experience and expertise to find the perfect solution for you.

La Calypso, The French Preschool At the heart of the Francophone community, we welcome children from 30 months old to school age, Monday to Friday. The kids learn in French, alternating guided and free times during which they learn by themselves playing, handling and experimenting. We aim at the overall and balanced development of each child and we focus especially on three learning trends: arts, close environment and ecology. As an annex of Cousteau, The French International School of Vancouver (located in North Vancouver from 1997), La Calypso offers a superior academic experience by uniting the best of France and Canada. Our teachers are native French speakers and certified by France and British Columbia. Cousteau and La Calypso names are a tribute to the French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who was greatly involved in conservationism. BOOK

* BIOGRAPHY

An Insider’s Story of the

Rise & Fall of Canadian Airlines by Sid Fattedad The demise of Canada’s other national air carrier, Canadian Airlines International in 1999 was heart wrenching to employees, unions, management and to the citizens of Canada. Confusion and stories abound as to what actually happened. This book sets the record straight as the man behind the employee rescue plan to save the airline decides to tell his story. Sid Fattedad emigrated to Vancouver from Hong Kong in 1968 to play drums in a rock and roll band, the Five Man Cargo. Having worked as an articling student in Hong Kong, the lustre of the music industry soon wore off and he found himself working as a junior accounting clerk for Canadian Pacific Airlines. It wasn’t long before Canadian Pacific became CP Air, the planes were painted orange and Sid became senior clerk of corporate accounting. The rising cost of oil in the 1970s, labour unrest and the acquisition of new planes made running an airline hard on the bottom line and the accounting department was always in the forefront. It was work all week, socialize at the pubs on the weekend with a tightly knit group called the ‘boat crew,’ who would often travel to England commandeering river boats on the canals of the Norfolk Broads, visiting pubs along the way. Sid became known as Kato. After receiving his CGA Sid was promoted to Travelling Auditor where he learned first hand CP Air’s overseas operations. The ‘night of the long knives, the Kremlin and ‘The General,’ all play into the story as the 1980s saw a sea of change at CP Air… Colussy fails to purchase Wardair and Sid is named to the board of TransPacific Tours Limited a little known but highly profitable subsidiary company. Don Carty purchases Nordair and Sid becomes Comptroller of CP Air. A backwards take-over. Carty attempts to purchase PWA but is thwarted by the FASB and PWA purchases CP Air. Read the rest of the synopsis on our website: www.warfleetpress.wordpress.com

Art collector Kenneth G. Heffel opened the doors to Heffel Gallery Limited in 1978 in Vancouver, BC, with the idea to share his expertise and enthusiasm for Canadian contemporary and historical art with the public. The gallery, which is still housed in its original brick and granite heritage location along Vancouver’s Gallery Row, is now run by second generation fine art dealers Robert and David Heffel. Building upon the legacy established by their father, Robert and David have developed the Heffel name into the foremost resource for fine art in the Pacific Northwest.

86 At West, our philosophy is simple. Begin with the best local ingredients from a loyal cadre of farmers, ranchers and fishers. Next, deliver complexity without complication—flavours that resonate and speak precisely to where we live, but also say that great food and drink needn’t be reserved for a special occasion. And finally, that they’re served in an intimate setting of genuine hospitality. Recognized as the ‘jewel in Vancouver’s culinary crown’, West’s outstanding contemporary regional cuisine and seamless service has earned much critical acclaim. Pristine seasonal ingredients are sourced to deliver superbly conceived dishes offering modern interpretations of classics. Lussobaby Discover our hand-picked selection of popular baby gear including innovative strollers, car seats, and baby carriers along with artful, inspired modern furniture. We also offer comfortable and stylish clothing and shoes from newborn to 10 years old from local and international fashion names such as TOMS, Natives, Mexx, Appaman, Petit Lem, Stride Rite and UGG. So he founded the UGG brand, began selling his sheepskin boots and they were an immediate sensation. By the mid 1980’s, the UGG brand became a symbol of relaxed southern California culture, gaining momentum through surf shops and other shops.

James Perse was born in Los Angeles, California in 1972. James’ childhood was split between the beach, the hockey rink and the floor of his father’s innovative Los Angeles boutique, Maxfield. With Maxfield at the forefront of putting Los Angeles on the fashion map, James received an incidental education on cutting edge fashion from Europe and Asia, on modern architecture, furniture design and on the elegant and the clean-line. Ironically, sports led James to his first foray into fashion. Obsessed with baseball caps, he could never find one that was well designed - with quality construction, shape, fabric and coloring. In 1991, James set out to make the ideal cap for Maxfield and it was not long before customers became clients - film directors ordered hats for their cast and crew and record labels bought them for tours.

The Stanley Theatre On December 15, 1930, The Stanley opened with a screening of Lillian Gish’s first talkie, One Romantic Night. This was the beginning of a love affair between the city and The Stanley. Original admission prices ranged from ten to forty cents, and included the feature, a comedy, a newsreel and a scenic. In addition to films, the early days of The Stanley featured live performances: local talent shows were put on, and Vancouver Little Theatre staged productions. During the Second World War, The Stanley theatre hosted fundraisers for the war effort. The Stanley Theatre is more than just a building. It is the heart and soul of our South Granville neigh bourhood. It draws people into our community and it creates a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the city. It gives us roots and provides consistency as everything around us is changing.

Marpole

The opening of the Marpole Safeway marks the first phase of an incredible redevelopment for this vibrant community. Incorporated into the storefront design was the need to acknowledge the visual history of the original Safeway store with the arched glulam beams once synonymous with Safeway across the Lower Mainland. Safeway has incorporated these glulam beams once again over the entrances.

92 Introducing Safeway’s New Lifestyle Design The design of the new Marpole Safeway reflects the evolving needs of the busy Metro Vancouver grocery shopper who is seeking easy meal solutions, healthy alternatives and items that address a wide range of dietary concerns. The new Marpole Safeway carries premium brands, locally grown fresh produce, a range of organic options and authentic Asian products in every department and every aisle. Consumers can easily identify locally grown, harvested and processed foods by looking for the Buy BC Food shelf tags. There are premium, locally grown and Canadian products in every department. Expanded offerings for those seeking gluten free, diabetic, organics, environmental, all natural products or products for those that have health specific needs.

The Store for Discerning Cats and Dogs

Vancouver’s Original Raw Food Pet Shop

We started out in our single-car garage with one medium-sized chest freezer full of green tripe, veggie-grains and beef hock bones. As with most new converts we set about spreading the ‘good news’ to anyone who’d listen - whether they had a dog or not! Soon, we had to purchase another freezer. Business was growing.

Prince of Wales Secondary School The Mission of Prince of Wales Secondary School is to provide a safe, supportive learning environment within a diverse school community. This community will foster self-esteem, co-operation, and mutual respect, and will allow students and staff to pursue self-discovery and excellence. The human and physical resources of the school will support the intellectual, aesthetic, social, physical, and emotional growth of all students so that they may become life-long learners and worthwhile contributors to the larger community. Programs: TREK Outdoor Education Program. Each year 112 students are admitted into the TREK Program. Students participate in two half-year terms, based at Prince of Wales Secondary School. Students must transfer to P.W. for the year. In the first term (Sept. – Jan.), 56 students will be “off-TREK”, while the other 56 will “on-TREK”. In the second term (Feb. – June), the student groups switch, thus completing both portions of the program. GOLD Program is intended to provide information about issues surrounding young people who are twice exceptional, who are intellectually gifted but struggle with LD or, in most cases, with learning output issues. Between 16th Avenue and 9th Avenue

Heading north towards Broadway just before 12th Avenue there is a Bullock’s Optical store. More than just an optical store they have a registered optician as well. Right next door is a wonderful local butcher shop just like you used to find in the neighbourhoods. Between 12th and Broadway new stores I recently discovered are Blythe Toning Studio and Rush Salon. I also noticed a woonderful flower shop. But the one that really stood out as I walked by was called Tangram Creamery. The aromas were to die for.

Pebble The lifestyle store for kids aged 0-6. Exactly what is a ‘lifestyle store for kids’? Pebble is the first baby & children’s store wholly devoted to conscious living. Our mission is to provide parents with products that help develop bright, healthy, active children and encourage a balanced approach to life. We are also frequently referred to as an ‘earthfriendly’ baby and kids’ store, which is true, although our actual mission goes far beyond that. Natural toys. Educational toys. The most fun toys. We look for toys that promote physical play. That develop problem-solving skills. That encourage reading and counting. That help kids role play and really use their imagination.

surprisingly, the toys that tend to do this best are ‘low-tech’ or ‘old school’ toys, usually made of wood or other natural materials. Moreover, with their emphasis on learning and development, they make it easier for parents to become actively involved in their child’s playtime. And none of the toys you’ll find at Pebble require batteries, thereby saving money and reducing environmental impact. We offer a carefully selected variety of kids clothing, shoes, toys, books, bedding, bath, and feeding products. Most of the products you’ll find at Pebble are either locally made, organically made, or made from natural materials (i.e. very little or no plastic or other synthetic material).

* BIOGRAPHY

My Greek Barber’s Diary by Christopher Best The heartwarming true story of how one man influenced so many over the course of his lifetime. Born in a small village in Militsa, Greece in 1935, George Chronopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and the Greek Civil War of 1944 - 1949. In the early days his village had no electricity yet his family lived like kings on their farm. His father decided that he would become a barber in Pilos, where he had moved as a young boy to be by the sea for health reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal. In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver. His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop. He opened his own hair salon, the Riviera on Seymour, in 1964. It wasn’t long before he was established in Vancouver. “There was no one doing

121 what I was doing! He had the establishment coming to him, the Jewish Community Syd Belzberg, Leon Kahn, Irving Kates, Sid Golden, Max Fugman, Roy Cantor, Joe Segal, members of the Richmond Golf & Country Club, every CEO in town including Jimmy Pattsion and Peter Bentley all came to him through word of mouth. In the seventies he opened a second location in the basement of the Hyatt Hotel called The Royal Riviera. He continued buying other businesses, mainly restaurants at first and later condos. He started his own painting and renovation companies. His real estate and business dealings took him first to the US and then to Britain, Switzerland, Bucharest and India. He and Voula raised three daughters over the years and was instrumental in raising money for the Greek community through his connections and for many other charities in Vancouver and across Canada. Church and family were always foremost in his life!

Sid Fattedad former VP of Canadian Airlines and the man who spearheaded the employee buy-out plan back in the day finally tells the inside story as to what actually happened causing Canada to lose its second national carrier.
