WELCOME TO THE NORTH SHORE The North Shore is more than just a spectacular backdrop for one of the world’s most scenic cities. It’s teeming with life, wild and urban, and the possibilities of what to do with your time here are plenty. Home to many summer and winter activities, including the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the mountains of the North Shore are an all-season playground, and add breathtaking vistas to the views in Canada’s most scenic community. Alpine trails and ski runs are just some of the places to meet locals and visitors. If you’re a water lover, just head downhill and you’ll hit the ocean. The coves and islands on the coastline make for perfect paddling trips and some of the best diving in the world. All that vibrant Coast Mountain rainforest makes North and West Vancouver’s trails a mecca for all levels of hikers and mountain bikers alike. After exploring the great outdoors, it’s time to hit the shops. Vancouver’s North Shore shopping has everything you’re looking for, from designer brands to one of a kind local shops in the many community shopping districts. Don’t forget to check out the local galleries, craft breweries, and eateries, that range quaint to classy too. If you’re hungry you’ll find everything from market food trucks to five star restaurants with world class views of the city skyline and harbour! Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Persian, Indian ...there’s something to satisfy every craving and every budget. The only thing in short supply is time to take in all the North Shore has to offer.

The North Shore mountains are composed of six peaks: Black, Strachan, Hollyburn, Grouse, Fromme, and Seymour Mountains, which offer perfect terrain to get a healthy dose of the great outdoors. One of the most popular hikes is the Baden-Powell Trail, offering a 48-km (30-mile) route from West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay all the way to Deep Cove. The trail can be done in sections by accessing it at a number of different locations. One of the east segments will lead you to Quarry Rock, which offers a stunning view of Deep Cove and Indian Arm.
Rainy day? This is the perfect time to go hiking as the Douglas firs and Western cedars offer a natural cover to get out of the rain while enjoying the freshest forest smell. Adventures include picturesque waterfalls, deep canyons, old growth forests, meandering creeks and rocky outcrops where you can view sail boats, seaplanes and cruise ships moving around the active port of Vancouver. If you are looking for an easy stroll with ocean views, the Seawall in West Vancouver can be accessed at Ambleside. The North Shore Spirit Trail has a segment that is wheelchair accessible. It begins at Waterfront Park and travels through to the Mosquito Creek Marina. North Shore Spirit Trail info: www.cnv.org/spirittrail Some other hikes to explore are: Cypress Falls, Capilano Canyon, Dog Mountain, Eagle Bluffs, Goldie Lake, Lynn Canyon Park, Norvan Falls and Rice Lake.

Mountain Biking The North Shore has a welldeserved reputation for world-class mountain bike riding. The steep slopes are woven with trails that offer everything from easy crosscountry to extreme downhill. Some of these trails contain numerous natural challenges like fallen logs, giant boulders to drop from, ravines to jump across, etc. Natural old-growth red cedar planks are used to create obstacles like bridges, ladders, and teetertotters to ride on. One of the most popular of these trails is CBC. Old Buck, Mushroom and Bridal Path trails are excellent routes for intermediate riders.

SAFETY TIPS
GENERAL INFO
British Columbia is bear country, and the North Shore mountains are prime black bear habitat.
ACCOMMODATIONS www.vancouversnorthshore.com
There are a few easy rules to remember to keep yourself and the bear safe if you do cross paths. You should never feed a bear, but leaving food garbage lying around can do just that. Hike in groups if possible and make some noise by attaching bear bells to your pack — bears will avoid you if they know you’re coming.

If you run into a bear, stay calm and back away, speaking to the bear in a low voice. If the bear approaches you, don’t run and don’t play dead. Stand your ground and speak firmly. If you have pepper spray, this is the time to reach for it.

Grouse Mountain
Know your route. Make sure your hiking or biking trail is right for your ability. Darkness falls quickly in the woods, so allow for extra time for your return.
Report bear sightings to 604-990-2327 (BEAR). ■
Never hike or bike alone. Let another person know (or leave a note on your car’s dash) where you’re going and when you should be back.
■
Plan for problems. Bring sturdy shoes, a waterproof jacket and always carry water. The weather can change quickly. A smart hiker also carries a light, a whistle, matches, a knife, some extra clothes, food and a first aid kit. A small pack can prevent big problems.

VILLAGE CHARM The North Shore is made up of several communities, each with its own small-town spirit, civic pride and unique characteristics. See the maps on pages 15 - 18 to locate these main-street marketplaces.
Lonsdale North Vancouver’s past and present meet up on Lonsdale Avenue. At the foot of this busy street you’ll find shipbuilding and where the working tugboats live. The Shipyards is a unique venue located at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue, and is anchored by the 700-foot long Burrard Dry Dock Pier and smaller floating St. Roch Dock. Walk the length of the pier and be treated to spectacular 360-degree views of the North Shore and Vancouver skylines. The Shipyards is home to the very popular Friday Night Market, which runs Friday nights between May – October, and Summer Sessions, which runs Saturday nights in July and August.

Lower Lonsdale is North Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood and is rich in history. Walk up Lonsdale and you’ll find a 29 block
steep avenue lined with shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs that truly capture the unique spirit of the city. Not feeling like a vertical walk? Take the 229 bus to the top and walk down. The area has two hotels, both with views of the working harbour, and extends four blocks up and two blocks east and west, but its heart is at Lonsdale Quay. See page 6 for more information. Walk along the pathway to the west and you’ll find Waterfront Park. For those interested in the arts, the Presentation House Arts Centre on Chesterfield Avenue is an art gallery, a museum, a playhouse and one of Lower Lonsdale’s bestkept secrets. In November 2017, the Presentation House Gallery will re-open at the foot of Lonsdale (in between the Shipyards and the Lonsdale Quay Market) as the brand new Polygon Gallery.

AMBLESIDE & DUNDARAVE
Ambleside One of West Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Ambleside has many pleasures and its long strip of beach is ideal for family picnics, sporting activities, swimming and just plain lounging around. Stretching between Ambleside and Dundarave is the Seawall, favoured by walkers and joggers. Both Ambleside and Dundarave are ideal for diners who like to look out at the water, with a variety of restaurants and patios to choose from. The Harmony Arts Festival has been a signature summer event in Ambleside. Don’t miss this year’s festival happening August 4-13. At night, the Lions Gate Bridge is distinguished by its elegant strings of white lights. You might also get to see a cruise ship head out to sea.
Dundarave Nestled between the mountains and the open ocean is the lovely seaside village of Dundarave in West Vancouver. With its oldfashioned lamps, beautifully tailored boulevard and hanging flower baskets, it is one of the North Shore’s most picturesque communities. Take a walk to the waterfront to find a scenic beach and a playground for children. Walk out to the end of the pier, which marks the site of the original ferry boat landing once used by loggers and weekend adventurers. Enjoy the prospect of Lions Gate Bridge on your left and the ships coming into the port from your right.

VILLAGE CHARM Lynn Valley Tucked between mountains in North Vancouver, Lynn Valley is a lush, pretty neighbourhood bordered by forest. Lynn Canyon Park is home to a spectacular rainforest and offers a range of trails, a free suspension bridge that hangs high above Lynn Creek and an ecology centre. Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, connected to the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, has fishing at peaceful Rice Lake and trails that link up with this section of the North Shore spiderweb of walkways called the Baden-Powell Trail. Make sure you include a visit to Lynn Valley Village. Anchored
by the beautiful public library, this pedestrian-only village has a diverse selection of shops and services. It is also home to the popular Live in Lynn Valley summer concert series and numerous community events.
Park & Tilford Gardens
Park & Tilford Just west of the Second Narrows Bridge and just north of Main Street is Park & Tilford Shopping Centre and Gardens. Grab a coffee and a treat from one of the coffee shops and enter the Park and Tilford Gardens, a European-style garden with eight themed areas on 2.8 acres of land. Admission is free. If you visit during the month
North Shore Studios 20 North Shore Visitors Guide www.vancouversnorthshore.com
of December, the Christmas light display is a must-see; entrance is by donation with all proceeds going to charity. In the Park & Tilford Shopping Centre, you will find shops, restaurants and a movie theatre to help you fill your day. Just north of the shopping centre is North Shore Film Studios where filming takes place for TV and movies.
Caulfeild Defying the usual English spelling guidelines, Caulfeild does indeed put its “e” before its “i.” We can blame the aberration on Sir Francis William Caulfeild, who established the community of Caulfeild Cove in 1898. Lighthouse Park is one of the community’s most appealing destinations. Its forest trails lead to enormous boulders that tumble down to the Pacific Ocean and offer one of West Vancouver’s most splendid views. The park also contains the Point Atkinson Lighthouse.
Horseshoe Bay
Horseshoe Bay Horseshoe Bay is the western bookend of the North Shore and the site of the BC Ferries terminal. But many come to Horseshoe Bay just for the view. In addition to the ferries chugging in and out, there are boats here at Sewell’s Marina, which has been owned by the same family for three generations. Why not rent a boat yourself?
Try your hand at fishing or just enjoy the magnificent surroundings while bouncing along the waves. There’s also a nice playground for kids. One favourite activity is getting fish and chips or an oyster burger from one of the takeout restaurants and eating it in the park overlooking the water. Another is buying an ice cream cone and wandering along the pier.
Deep Cove
Lighthouse Park
Deep Cove One trip to Deep Cove and you’ll want to go back. A drive down Gallant Avenue gives way to the sheltered, calm harbour vista that is the area’s signature view. You can paddle out of the cove and into Indian Arm, or simply sit on the beach and gaze. The scenic and relatively easy Quarry Rock hike is a must for visitors, offering an amazing birds eye view of Deep Cove and Indian Arm. And be sure to reward
yourself after your hike with a meltin-your-mouth donut from Honey Doughnuts & Goodies! Deep Cove is largely residential, but its commercial core is the two-block stretch of Gallant Avenue, where galleries and a local theatre vie for attention alongside unique boutiques and quaint bistros. A little west of the cove itself, evidence of waterfront industry can be seen from Cates Park, which has both a beach and a heavily wooded trail.

ARTS & CULTURE The North Shore boasts an array of destinations and events that celebrate local and indigenous culture and creativity. Join in the neighbourhood fun with popular outdoor summer concerts in Dundarave, Deep Cove, Lynn Valley and Edgemont Village. Experience local aboriginal customs at the Squamish Nation’s annual Pow Wow, or at the Whey-ah-Wichen Canoe Festival, hosted by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. Along the way, look for unique items of artistry at the many diverse small shops and galleries sprinkled across the North Shore, which showcase a variety of homegrown and visiting talent.

Once a summer village site for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Cates Park/Whey-ah-Wichen holds a great deal of history. The ancestral name means “Faces the Wind,” and it’s appropriate for the seaside park that features a six-kilometre waterfront trail that winds past sandy beaches and through a mixed forest of Douglas fir and big leaf maple trees.
