Mountain Biking The North Shore has a well-deserved reputation for world-class mountain bike riding. The steep slopes are woven with trails that offer everything from easy cross-country to extreme downhill. Some of these trails contain numerous natural challenges like fallen logs, giant boulders to drop from, ravines to jump across, etc. Natural old-growth red cedar planks are used to create obstacles like bridges, ladders, and teeter-totters to ride on. Some of the most popular bike trails include Good Sir Martin, John Deer, CBC and Bridal Path.

General Info

Accommodations

British Columbia is bear country, and the North Shore mountains are prime black bear habitat. There are a few easy rules to remember to keep yourself and the bear safe if you do cross paths. You should never feed a bear, but leaving food garbage lying around can do just that. Hike in groups if possible and make some noise by attaching bear bells to your pack — bears will avoid you if they know you’re coming.

Transportation

■ Know your route.

Make sure your hiking or biking trail is right for your ability. Darkness falls quickly in the woods, so allow for extra time for your return.

■ Never hike or bike alone.

Let another person know (or leave a note on your car’s dash) where you’re going and when you should be back.

■ Plan for problems.

Bring sturdy shoes, a waterproof jacket and always carry water. The weather can change quickly. A smart hiker also carries a light, a whistle, matches, a knife, some extra clothes, food and a first aid kit. A small pack can prevent big problems.

■ Bring a cellphone.

If you do get into trouble, a cellphone is a huge help for rescuers.

LOWER LONSDALE BIA

Lower Lonsdale is North Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood and is rich in history. Walk up Lonsdale and you’ll find a 29-block, steep avenue lined with shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs that truly capture the unique spirit of the city. Not feeling like a vertical walk? Take the 229 bus to the top and walk down. The area has two hotels, both with views of the working harbour, and extends four blocks up and two blocks east and west, but its heart is at Lonsdale Quay (see page 6 for more information). Walk along the pathway to the west and you’ll find Waterfront Park, along with access to the Spirit Trail/ Trans Canada Trail.

FUN CITY FESTIVAL For those interested in the arts, the Presentation House Theatre on Chesterfield Avenue is one of Lower Lonsdale’s best-kept secrets. In November 2017, the Presentation House Gallery moved out of the Chesterfield location, and re-opened at the foot of Lonsdale (in between the Shipyards and the Lonsdale Quay Market) as the brand new Polygon Gallery. Known as Presentation House Gallery for nearly four decades, The Polygon Gallery is a non-collecting Canadian public art gallery with a focus on photography and media-based art. Designed by world-renowned firm Patkau Architects, The Polygon Gallery is a stunning new addition to the waterfront and worth a visit. See pages 27-29 for more arts and culture information.

Only a few minutes from Highway 1 (take exit 14 and head north) and down the road from Grouse Mountain, this village feels like a mountain resort town. The relaxed ambience lures visitors from all over the North Shore and beyond. Its cosy coffee shops beckon you to sit down and enjoy a freshly baked treat with your coffee or tea, and its restaurants offer delicious, heartier fare to fuel you for all your North Shore adventures. During July and August, you can catch the Summer Live concert series on Friday evenings. Even if you have only a few minutes before a visit to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, the Capilano Salmon Hatchery or after huffing and puffing up the Grouse Grind, Edgemont Village is worth a quick visit.

Lynn Valley Originally known as “Shaketown,” this lumber town was eventually called “Lynn Valley” after the pioneering Linn family who homesteaded in the area. Tucked between mountains, Lynn Valley is a lush, pretty neighbourhood that is bordered by the same parks and forests that drew people to the area a hundred years ago. Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, connected to the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, has fishing at peaceful Rice Lake and trails that link up with this section of the North Shore spiderweb of walkways called the Baden-Powell Trail. Near the entrance of the park is End of the Line General Store, full of historic photos of the area and local souvenirs and original art. It’s a charming place to grab a coffee and a bite to eat before your outdoor activities in one of the nearby parks.

VARLEY TRAIL

MIKE WAKEFIELD

Lynn Valley is home to Lynn Valley Day…one of the most popular community events on the North Shore happening in mid-June. Kicked off by a ticketed gala dinner and dance on a Friday night, Saturday morning starts with a pancake breakfast then a parade, followed by fair rides, food, games and entertainment all day long in Lynn Valley Park. See the Events Calendar on pages 36-39 for more information.

Make sure you include a visit to Lynn Valley Village. Anchored by the beautiful public library, this pedestrian-only village has a diverse selection of shops and services. It is also home to the popular Live in Lynn Valley summer concert series on Friday nights throughout July and August, and numerous community events throughout the year. And right next door to the village is Lynn Valley Centre – a shopping centre offering convenient shops and services to help you enjoy your stay.

Park & Tilford Just west of the Second Narrows Bridge and just north of Main Street is Park & Tilford Shopping Centre and Gardens. Grab a coffee and a treat from one of the coffee shops and enter the Park and Tilford Gardens, a Europeanstyle garden with eight themed areas on 2.8 acres of land. Bridges, hanging baskets and a Japanese garden make this one of North Vancouver’s most tranquil corners. Admission is free, and the gardens are open from 9:30 a.m. to dusk daily.

NORTH SHORE STUDIOS

KENT KALLBERG

If you visit during the month of December, the Christmas light display is a must-see; entrance is by donation with all proceeds going to charity. The entire garden is transformed into a festive wonderland lit by over 150,000 Christmas lights. Opening night features hot chocolate, live entertainment and a Light Up countdown to be enjoyed by all.

Just north of the shopping centre is North Shore Film Studios where filming takes place for TV, movies, and online streaming. Popular titles include X-Files – Revival and Deadpool (20th Century Fox Television), the Fifty Shades trilogy (Universal Pictures), Overboard (MGM), Zoo (CBS), Death Note (Netflix), The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Summit) and many more. Just east of the shopping centre is Lynn Creek, featuring a trail system that leads visitors south to Harbourview Park and then the waterfront for sweeping views of Burrard Inlet, the Second Narrows Bridge and Vancouver.

MIKE WAKEFIELD

If you head north on the trail, you will encounter a beautiful community green space, Bridgman Park. A great opportunity to stretch your legs after catching a matinee showing at the theatre!

In the Park & Tilford Shopping Centre, you will find shops, restaurants and a movie theatre to help you fill your day.

Deep Cove One trip to Deep Cove and you’ll want to go back. A drive down Gallant Avenue gives way to the sheltered, calm harbour vista that is the area’s signature view. You can paddle out of the cove and into Indian Arm on a kayak or paddle board, or simply sit on the beach and gaze at the stunning vista.

VANCOUVER’S NORTH SHORE

If you want to venture out onto the water, but without exerting too much energy, Deep Cove Marina offers pontoon boat rentals – a perfect way for your group of 10 or less to explore the Indian Arm in comfort – or outboard rentals for groups of four or less. See page 11 for information on kayak, paddle board and boat rentals in Deep Cove.

Deep Cove is largely residential, but its commercial core is the two-block stretch of Gallant Avenue, where galleries and a local theatre vie for attention alongside unique boutiques and quaint bistros. A little west of the Cove itself, evidence of waterfront industry can be seen from Cates Park (also called Whey-Ah-Wichen, the Tsleil-Waututh word that means “faces the wind). Cates Park has both a beach and a heavily wooded trail, as well as playground area and vast expanses of green space to sprawl out and soak up the sun. Feeling like a sweet treat? Why not try a melt-in-your-mouth doughnut from Honey Doughnuts & Goodies. Titanic star and Oscar-winner Kate Winslet first raved about these doughnuts back in September 2016 while at the Toronto International Film Festival. She then went back to Deep Cove in December 2017 for another “Honey’s fix and now the secret is definitely out! Parking can be a challenge in this seaside neighbourhood, especially during the busy summer months and on weekends. Therefore try parking at Panorama Park or Myrtle Park, both of which are just outside of the Cove.

Ambleside Beach One of West Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Ambleside has many pleasures and its long strip of beach is ideal for family picnics, sporting activities, swimming and just plain lounging around. Stretching between Ambleside and Dundarave is the Seawalk, favoured by walkers and joggers. Both Ambleside and Dundarave are ideal for diners who like to look out at the water, with a variety of restaurants and patios to choose from. The Harmony Arts Festival has been a signature summer event in Ambleside. Don’t miss this year’s festival happening August 3-12. At night, the Lions Gate Bridge is distinguished by its elegant strings of white lights. You might also get to see a cruise ship head out to sea. The perfect place to shop, dine and stroll, Ambleside Beach is home to a variety of independent businesses including specialty boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, professional services and more. It’s easy to spend the day here!

Dundarave Village Nestled between the mountains and the open ocean is the lovely seaside village of Dundarave in West Vancouver. With its old-fashion lamps, beautifully tailored boulevard and hanging flower baskets, it is one of the North Shore’s most picturesque communities. Take a walk to the waterfront to find a scenic beach and a playground for children. Walk out to the end of the pier, which marks the site of the original ferry boat landing once used by loggers and weekend adventurers. Enjoy the prospect of Lions Gate Bridge on your left and the ships coming into the port from your right.

AMBLESIDE BEACH

DARREN HULL

Known as West Vancouver’s dining destination, this quaint and welcoming village is the perfect place to enjoy a fantastic meal before exploring the local shops offering unique gifts, crafts, clothing and so much more. Come escape to the walkable seaside community of Dundarave Village.

North Shore Visitors Guide www.vancouversnorthshore.com 25

Caulfeild

Many houses in the area are centered around Caulfeild Cove, which used to go by the name Skunk Cove. In early times, ships entering and leaving the harbour needed a local boat pilot to help guide them away from the rugged coastline from Cypress Creek to Lighthouse Park. These pilot boats used to wait in Skunk Cove to escort these ships safely in and out of the harbour. Due to a population boom in the mid-1970s, the community of Lower Caulfeild expanded north and new subdivisions were created. The continued population growth led to the opening of the Caulfeild Village Shopping Centre in 1987, which provides a local retail and commercial services for residents, and a convenient stop-in for those travelling to or from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal and beyond.

SEWELL’S MARINA

VANCOUVER’S NORTH SHORE

Defying the usual English spelling guidelines, Caulfeild does indeed put its “e” before its “i.” We can blame the aberration on Sir Francis William Caulfeild, who established the community of Caulfeild Cove in 1898. His penchant for following natural landscape contours rather than straight lines is most likely why the neighbourhood has such a curvy maze of streets. Before he died in 1934, Caulfeild donated 25 hectares of land for park use as well as a site for St. Francis-in-the-Wood church.

HORSESHOE BAY VILLAGE

Horseshoe Bay Horseshoe Bay is the western bookend of the North Shore and the gateway to Howe Sound. It’s here that you can board a BC Ferry for a 20-minute ride to beautiful Bowen Island to explore to your heart’s content – by foot, bicycle or vehicle. But many come to Horseshoe Bay just for the view, as well as other familyfun activities. In addition to the ferries chugging in and out, there are boats here at Sewell’s Marina, which has been owned by the same family for three generations. Why not rent a boat yourself? Try your hand at fishing or just enjoy the magnificent surroundings while bouncing along the waves. For more information on boat rentals and tours, see page 10.

LIGHTHOUSE PARK

26 North Shore Visitors Guide www.vancouversnorthshore.com

@BILL.PICS

There’s also a nice playground for kids and benches and grassy areas for sitting and relaxing. One favourite activity is getting fish and chips or an oyster burger from one of the takeout restaurants and eating it in the park overlooking the water or down on the small beach. Another is buying an ice cream cone and wandering along the pier. Throughout the village are many charming boutiques and eateries to visit and enjoy. Just west of Horseshoe Bay is Whytecliff Park, a natural marine sanctuary and popular scuba-diving spot where harbour seals and other marine life can be spotted. You’ll also find a playground, a few short trails, picnic spots, a swimming beach, café and tennis courts in this 15+ hectare park.

VANCOUVER’S NORTH SHORE

Lighthouse Park is one of the community’s most appealing destinations. Its forest trails lead to enormous boulders that tumble down to the Pacific Ocean and offer one of West Vancouver’s most spectacular views. The park also contains the Point Atkinson Lighthouse, which has an interesting history dating back to the spring of 1874. Point Atkinson, named by Captain Vancouver for a particular friend when he sailed past this rocky point in 1792, was officially designated a National Historic Site in 1994.

Once a summer village site for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Cates Park/ Whey-ah-Wichen holds a great deal of history. The ancestral name means “Faces the Wind,” and it’s appropriate for the seaside park that features a six-kilometre waterfront trail that winds past sandy beaches and through a mixed forest of Douglas fir and big leaf maple trees.

Accessibility

For people with limited mobility, getting around in a new location can be a big concern. Visitors who use wheelchairs or walking aids are able to enjoy the natural attractions of the North Shore. All buses throughout the Lower Mainland feature ramps and designated wheelchair-seating areas. Schedules can be found at www.translink.ca.

Mountain Bed and Breakfast www.mountainbb.com 604-987-2725

Disabled visitors shouldn’t be shy about heading up to the mountains either, as Seymour, Cypress and Grouse mountains are all equipped with ramps, accessible trails and washrooms. The mountains’ restaurant facilities provide wheelchair accessible table heights. Over in West Vancouver, the Seawalk and John Lawson Park have ramps and wheelchair-accessible washrooms with automatic door openers. All community centres on the North Shore are wheelchair accessible, and those with pools are all equipped with lifts.
