Framing Hanley "The Sum Of Who We Are" (Rock) www.framinghanley.net
Review by Darian Magee - 4.4/5 Dragons The Sum of Who We Are is familiar. It is the song we shared our first kiss to and the album playing on repeat when we sobbed uglily into our pillows when it didn't work out. The long awaited Framing Hanley album was conceived in 2011 and after 3 long years will finally be hitting the shelves April 24th, 2014, delighting many impatient fans everywhere. The band of five sent the Internet a tizzy after releasing a sampler of the album online, promising fans the same alluring dark edge made so evident in their earlier work The Moment. The lyrics are harsh and honest, each line burdened with its own meaning, the melodies dripping with raw passion. Once again Kenneth Nixons vocals are nothing short of thrilling, reaching extraordinary heights with his impressive range. The album itself is bittersweet, acting as the now departed bassists Luke McDuffee's last contribution to the Nashville born group, leaving Brandon Wooten (Guitarist), Chris Vest (Drummer) and Kenneth Nixon (Vocalist) the last remaining members of the original five. He has been with them since their creation in 2005 and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Framing Hanley will be touring America all throughout April and May, hitting most major cities in Eastern United States. Make sure to download the first three songs of The Sum of Who We Are free on Amazon or Itunes for a limited time only.
Hunter & Wolfe "Days And Works" (Indie/Folk/Rock) www.hunterandwolfe.com Review by Eli lace This Brooklyn duo craft true-grit American rock'n'roll persuaded by the heart and soul. Singer Michael Maffei lets loose his lyrics straight from the depths of his rotgut. Their second album, Days And Works, recently released in February and available for download on their Bandcamp. Maffei and Sundeep Kapur put this whole thing together: writing, performance, recording and production. The songs are triumphant and expertly sculpted. "La La La" ambles in with a joyous romp of twittering piano keys and thick down-strummed acoustic guitar. The second, somber, "What Has Changed?" builds over time on a throbbing guitar drone with Maffei falling in and out until it finally erupts. The louder songs remind me faintly of the brash and direct style of The Walkmen. The stuffy room feeling, lazy washed out guitars against driving drums, and an internal personal breakthrough just around the corner. "Woe Is You" is a jagged cutting guitar 08 VandalaMagazine.Com - April 2014
declaration with a slow-simmering attack and Maffei rolling over the crescendos. On "Please" some dripping wet guitar rinses off a slow-burning flame. Each song is commanded by Maffei's voice and the different emotions it brings. He shows great restraint, each note carrying a light quiver, but strong and with full intent. On the acoustically sparse "All My Might" his voice soars between the beautifully interlocked and carefully plucked notes. Maffei shakes his heart loose from his sleeve on the wallowing "Even Odds." The acoustic number has singing emotional response. "Punching all the tickets / Moving point to point/TIT it all seems pointless," he sings from the echo chamber of existential defeat. Days And Works is a perfectly compact album. Over its nine songs is the rocleniroll of the young man. It sounds classic and instantly lived-in; a record that could ride parallel with your life for a moment and stay with you always. Really, there is nothing wrong with it.

Mother "A New Life" (Hard Rock/Alternative) www.rockyourmother.com Rating 4.7/5 Dragons Though the trio of musicians are fairly new to the music scene, they play with the skills of a well seasoned rock band and I could not be more amazed by the artists (Nick Fargo - Vocals and Piano/ Mike Gowen - Guitar and Piano / Johnny - Bass / Marshall Castaneda - Drums and Piano) hailing from New York. Upon pressing play, I was greeted with a soothing preface of trance electronic which quickly transitioned to tenacious strings and heady percussion sets. The vocals are an art all on their own, exercising impressive range and strength. It's hard to find words to describe A New Life, but lively sums it up quite nicely. It's exciting, it's zestful, and contains some of the best songs to wake up to in the morning. Although my review was originally sitting at an impressive 4.5 stars, I had to bump it up a few notches after hearing the last track on the album To Live Within. The instrumentals are absolutely enchanting, the passion behind it raw, with lyrics that possess both tenderness and authenticity. Since MOTHERS creation in 2011, they've released the album Dissonant Young and have opened for both Buckcherry and Heavens Basement on their 2013 tour - If you find yourself in New York this April, be sure to keep an eye out for this promising young band as they'll be performing at The Knitting Factory early on in the month.
The Monochrome Cherubs "Pure Grinding Sparkle" (Rock) www.mamboroomproductions.com Rating 4.2 Dragons With a style almost reminiscent of The Red Hot Chili Peppers The Monochrome Cherubs have not failed to impress with Pure Grinding Sparkle. The band members (Tim Lacy, Mike Sciotto, Nick Moroch) seem to have little in common, but each possess a love for classic rock with passion made evident in every note. Before leaving New York City, vocalist Tim Lacy spent his days as a Sound Engineer working with bands such as Radiohead and Savatage, while drummer Mike Sciotto and guitarist Nick Moroch formed connections with Sun Red Son, Jefferson Starship, David Bowie, and more. Since coming together in 2001, they have created 3 albums and released the single Sensitive to Light in 2011. f
Pure Grinding Sparkles tracks are fun, the guitar aggressive, each riff bleeding into the next with symphonic ease. While the Monochrome Cherubs stay true to the rock and roll genre, the band finds themselves standing out with their upbeat refrains and intoxicating rhythm. Although the lyrics could use improvement and are often routine, they possess an agreeable uniqueness and honesty, the vocals more than compensating for what they lack in poetry. All in all, I found myself quite impressed by the extraordinary group of men and look forward to listening in on their journey exploring the music scene. 10 VandalaMagazine.Corn - April 2014

Pilgrim "LT: Void Worship" (Doom Metal) www.hailthepilgrim.bandcamp.com Rating 4/5 Dragons Fun Fact A: Pilgrim are from the same city as H. P. Lovecraft. Fun Fact B: Pilgrim actually sound like it. I think the execs at Metal Blade must have sat Pilgrim down and explained to them exactly what would happen if they didn't manage to knuckle down and take home all the marbles with their sophmore album. Stacked alongside 2012's Misery Wizard, (all lows; no highs) II: Void Worship is entirely next-level by comparison. First indication: the hand-painted sword and sorcery artwork. It's no Frank Frazetta or Jeffrey Jones or even Ken Kelly but it's got spirit and grit and they rarely make 'em like that these days. Second would be the sheer amount of riffs on this album; ebbing like tidewater glacier cycles; advancing("Paladin"), alternating ("Arcane Sanctum"), retreating ("Master's Chamber") and ultimately expiring ("Away from Here") into echoes of feedback reflecting against cavern walls. Echoes of echoes; echoes of Reverend Bizarre, Cathedral, early Solstice. Good-to-great stuff; the soundtrack to your next graveyard rendezvous.
Savage Messiah "The Fateful Dark" (Metal) www.savagemessiah.net Rating 3.5/5 Dragons There are a handful of things that chop my wood faster than Hexxus in Ferngully. One of them is "Contemporary Thrash Metal." At The Gates guitar-horsing over quantized blast-beats, "dirty" vocals, nose-job'd production in the vein of Andy Sneap. I expected The Fateful Dark to have those things, but Savage Messiah must have written it with yours truly in mind. No blast-beats. Decent riffs, maybe borrowed from Testament, plus leads lifted from Murray/Smith; A „N.!. eifs. singer (remember those?) who can get way the hell up f , 41. Ittri h there. The modern production leaves nothing to the imagination and there's a not-so-savage ballad on here, but you can't win 'em all. The rest of it is a steady rotation of palm-muted stringabuse with jackhammer drumming and plenty of power metal in the choruses. Bonus edition even comes with a Diamond Head cover. Blimey! Thumbs-up for the timely + thought-provoking cover art featuring: Papa Whatshisnamus from Ghost BC, Gene Simmons tongue and Yngwie Malmsteen's stage outfit from '92. Album Cromer Pick Comeback Kid "Die Knowing" (Hardcore/Punk) www.comeback-kid.com Review By Dustin Griffin I don't know why, but the soulless mascot on the cover of 'Die Knowing' initially reminds me of Mr. Freeze from Batman; The Animated Series. I know they only have a passing resemblance, but there's a familiarity there that I can't shake. Maybe they're cousins or something. The art that adorns Comeback Kid's fourth offering is appropriately claustrophobic. I've been sitting here studying this thing for the last five minutes and I still don't know the extent of what's happening in it. Initially it feels a little busy and if busy art isn't your thing, it can be somewhat off-putting. But look closer and you'll be rewarded with an intricate web of design and ideas. Each individual expression layered and carefully placed to serve the whole. The mastermind behind this impressive and unsettling graphic is the eminently talented Southern California artist Dave Quiggle. Qniggle is a well known manufacturer of graphic art and screen print in the music industry and has done work for no less bonafide legends than Joey Ramone and Misfits. The lyrical content of Die Knowing flits between anger, questions of self worth and even redemption. Lyrics that fit the anvil like presence of the music. But one of the great things about Comeback Kid is that their hardcore exterior and occasional tough-guy first impression is often a surface primer for what is in actuality an incredibly diverse and multi-faceted, dense musical landscape. Multiple guitars will charge ahead like angry, steam-powered locomotives on separate tracks with separate destinations, all the while running parallel to each other in perfect unison. Thundering drums and rollicking bass line provide cues and backbones made of solid steel. And impassioned vocals shredding through the ruckus and breaking through the wall, that hurt your throat just to listen to, drive the point the music's making home without a whisper of regret or hesitation. This record can be overwhelming in the best sense and Quiggle has crafted an image to fit the bill. It's exciting when two artists, hugely talented in their own fields, come together for a collaboration that jumps the separation of labels and create a unified work that makes as much sense as interlocking fingers. On another level, the collage of images that grace this cover could also represent nature. With the otherworldly figure a humanistic personification of it, better enabling it to commingle with the human race, perhaps in a last ditch effort to bid an SOS for its dying soul. Certainly the sound on Die Knowing, as deliberate its intricacies in the layers beneath may be, is a return to roots exploration of some of the band's heaviest, and earliest, material. Of course, there's something to be said of reading too deeply into things and looking past philosophical contemplations. At the end of the day the cover of Die Knowing could have nothing to do with the record's title and exist simply as a cool looking and impressive piece of artwork by a talented artist. One that perfectly complements the content it represents. That's cool too. 16 vandalaMagazine.Com - April 2014

Rock Past and Present From Las Vega By Crystal Lee One would think spring would show its head yet I sit here in a warmer climate but I am seeing snow, cold winds and no spring flowers peaking their head out. As much as I want to start blasting music with the windows down I am in my comfort zone of looking out the window with a hot cup of tea and fearful of opening a window. The good part is with the windows closed I can blast my music, with no complaints. And of late focus on driving music I need for bad weather thus searching the playlists of the past and present for the perfect songs. The band "Otherwise" really hit the media in 2012 with their album "True Love Never Dies" which I gave a 5/5 rating though to my surprise the band had a few other albums out. I remember getting told "Are you sure you want such a new band on the cover?" and now I can say "I told you so" since they have done extremely well in the music scene and playing the stages with some of musics biggest names. I looked them up once I heard "True Love Never Dies" and their albums "Otherwise" (2006), and "Some Kind of Alchemy" (2009) both are on my player full time Not very often do you get a band that puts out album after album with the continuous playability. How many bands can you say that about before they were signed? Even early on the band thought about their albums as a whole and made sure that every song was quality. Be it that hard rock sound to the smooth soft passionate songs. Highlights from those albums are "Silence Reigns" "Bloody Knuckles, Broken Glass", "I Am Spartacus" which all have that perfect rock sound with some old school passion. Plus in the middle you have "Shapes of Metal" which is a mix of that light and rock sound that keeps my player going just as much. To go along with those softer days I have been listening to songs from their free download album "Enjoy the Pain" that they made on the road for their fans this year. Rain" in My Dreams". Highlights and "Miles of "Once (www.centurymedia.com/specialsiotherwise-ETP) They also covered "Rebel Yell" in a more of a soft version which is beautiful. Otherwise is a band that you can buy all their albums and never be disappointed. They also love their fans thus a free album made on the road since they have been nothing but busy touring the country. Most of all you see nothing but growth and getting even better with every album. So go on iTunes and take a listen to Otherwise past and stay tuned for more new music. In the mix of Otherwise on the road I found this gem on my player - "Battle Born" By Five Finger Death Punch. One thing I love about this band is they do high energy metal then can do the 360 with soft songs like this one and both sound so natural. The lyrics touch me personally since for those who know me know why this song would. My past was not so easy yet here I am today in such a amazing place. "I've been a thousand places and shook a million hands. I don't know where I'm going, But I know just where I've been, I've flown a million miles". 18 vandaiamagazine.corn - April 2014
I look back at my past and the miles traveled has shown me so much. As much as I love the road I love being home with my family where like many in this industry. Home is so important to take a break from the spotlight, with all the positive and negative battles of the road. Home is a place and time where you reflect and get self perspective so you can drive the road that is unknown. Five Finger Death Punch writes songs with lyrics that are relatable and this song is no different. To bring things full circle Five Finger Punch just released "House of the Rising Sun" video with some high energy modern Mad Max/ Western style video. Right away in the video you notice the turbo charge diesel motor - how can you not miss that black smoke of sexy. (Sorry environmentalists). Also Steve Darnell of the famous Welder Up Garage built the cars which are always a hit. Plus the video they used a version of "You" that I must have! Then end the last part of the video is where the cover of "House of the Rising Sun" comes in, which at first I was worried about. Surprise - I have to say I loved it The original is better but their version has some balls and that's what makes it a 5FDP Song. To sum the video and the song Zoltan explains:

"This video was an experiment, the initial step toward something we always wanted to do, which is to make a full-length Death Punch movie somewhere down the line. We jumped into this knowing that we'd shoot more footage than we could possibly fit in one music video. We went out there with two helicopters, two gyrocopters, twenty something crazy cars, a big cast and an arsenal of cameras. We ended up with so much amazing material, the hardest task was to compress it down into a 3 minutes video, so we made an extended version with a long intro and we are making an even longer 'directors cut' as we speak." This band is a must to workout to and to have playing while driving! So make sure you grab "The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Heaven Vol 2" to get you through till summer! Not Just Tits in a Corset: A Celebration of Women in Metal Book By Jill Hughs Kirtland - wwvv.jillkirtiand.com Review by Jeff Black - 3.5/5 Dragons Earlier this year, Pennsylvanian journalist Jill Hughs Kirtland won big and doubled her money in an IndieGogo campaign to produce this book. Armed with 140 full-colour pages, three billion words of wisdom from matriarch Doro Pesch and the most flippant title since 'Prcking and Punching', Kirtland seems ready to tear down barriers, forcibly extricate the narrow-minded from whatever rocks they've been hiding under, and illuminate the globe with the glare of CELEBRATING ::*;;;Lw. IN META L burning bras. It would be really easy to use this review as a vehicle to air my opinions on feminism and push some sort of agenda, but that's not what I'm about. That's not what Not Just Tits in a Corset is about either. It's about good vibes, sharing stories, and positive messages and... well, not much else.
NOT JUS TITS 114
The book is organized into chapters including Triumphs, Challenges, Inspirations and so on, with the meat of each chapter consisting of interview snippets from the various contributors. There's a pretty wide variety of ladies accounted for, including mistresses of the olde guard (Chastain, Hellion, Bitch, Girlschool, etc) along with the classical queens from Nightwish, After Forever, Epica, and more. The extreme end of the spectrum gets a bit of love from Arch Enemy, Holy Moses and Sigh. It ain't just about pretty voices; instrumentalists from Eluveitie, Pathfinder and Blackguard pop in once in a while as well as a plethora of women from across the industry, from photographers to sound engineers. I felt that the 80's broads had some of the stronger quotes, like this gem: "I remember early on at shows when I saw females in the audience, I'd try to bring them in so they'd get it. I don't want to f*ck him, I want to be him." - Leather Leone (Chastain) Other highlights include a harrowing backstage tale from Ann Boleyn, conflict over album art featuring Delain, and a round-table where everyone takes the piss out of Revolver's "Hottest Women in Metal" smut-fest. For those seeking an intellectual experience regarding sexism within the music industry and/or a study of sexuality and heavy metal, this isn't it. Most of the interviews are anecdotal bites, and the cutting-room structure of the book only gives the gals so much room to expand on what ideas they have. At its best, the contributors offer funny or empowering stories, background info on the featured dames and a few nuggets of wisdom on getting into the industry itself. At its worst, it reads like a gossip column. It's pricey too: physical copies start at $50 for softcover, $60 for hardcover. Ebook version sits at a reasonable $7. Overall, this is a feel-good coffee table book that's got nice message for distressed and demoralized damsels, lost and confused lasses, and pretty much anyone needing a wordy reminder that there's a place for everyone in this little niche. Tiny Danza is Back Review and Photo By Gideon Greenbaum- hinder `Tiny Danza' is back. This was their first show after over two years of hiatus, during which time they ended up dropping their label and their manager. It is clear that these Toronto titans are free, completely inhibitionless and loving it. The group formed in 2006 and I believe the name (best name ever) was decided on with the use of a dartboard. They briefly changed the name to 'Nixon' at the request of their previous label but thankfully they changed it back.
i
Watching their riotous live performance it is clear that the guys from TD have endless energy. In fact at the end of the show emcee Andrew Craig was bargaining with his band mates for an additional encore, saying "I'm just having such a great time", of which they did three. The Rivoli in Toronto was still packed at 1:00 AM as 'Tiny Danza' took the stage. To give you an idea of their sound TD has been described as "a dove making love to a supernova". They are a blend of creative passion backed by a robotically tight band with majestic pop "ask' compositions. Andrew Craig provides Gideon Greenbaum-Shinder immensely smooth R&B vocals, which would range in appeal to fans of both Usher and Stevie Wonder. Emcee Galen Hogg is at the core of this bands hip-hop influence, providing smooth flows and fiery backups. Craig and Hogg have great chemistry and are constantly thrilled to be on stage whilst jumping and screaming. Funky riffs grounded in jazz with rock-laden flourishes dominate the bands instrumentation. Matt Russo plays a fuzzy arpeggiated rock guitar, Andrew 'Santa' Santaguida adds intuitively apt ambience and bass on the electric piano while Nick Shao is simply metronomic and boldly emphatic on the drums. 'Tiny Danza's current compositions are leaning more towards a smooth pop sound, although they are still frequently reaching back into their pool of raw indie pop rock. The guys from 'Tiny Danza' will surely be on the radio soon, their new material has a huge amount of mass appeal, newer songs like 'Weapon' or 'One Day' were my favorite of the live set. The Mahones - The Night hen Everyone is Irish Review and Photo By Gideon Greenbaum-hinder Put simply/ 'The Mahones' are a Canadian institution. They play dynamic punk-rock laden with Irish counterparts and a little old school classical Celtic drizzled on top. So, it is no coincidence that 'The Mahones' were formed on a St. Patrick's Day over 20 years ago. Not only is it a day that every Irish person should celebrate, but it is an event that calls for a double commemoration when 'The Mahones' are involved. Therefore there is nothing like a St. Patrick's day show with 'The Mahones'. It was a beer spilling, of screaming, green wearing good time. Most people there where clearly determined to forget that it was a Monday night and did so with ease, abetted by a little liquid courage, as is tradition. The crowd got a little pushy and punchy once the mosh started to take effect, of course, I would expect nothing less from a St. Patrick's Day show. The one disappointment for me was that a certain section of the crowd remained quite reserved and ultimately stayed sitting down throughout the majority of The Mahones' set. Of course those of us who where in the thick of it had no time to look back as we where completely enveloped in the electric stage presence of the power couple Finny and Katie Mconnell. `The Mahones' are no nostalgic reproduction of the genre. Finny Mconnell formed the band in 1990. As the main songwriter Finny combines his obvious love of classic punk rock and his pride in his own Irish culture. He also takes on the role of lead Vocalist and plays a mean guitar. The beautiful Katie "KaBoom" McConnell plays a raging storm of arpeggios on the accordion and screams fervent backup vocals. Dom "The Bomb" Whelan was thrashing out epic grooves on the drum kit." Drunken Dirty Bastard" was definite favorite of mine live. This show also had a wonderful, distinctive moment where Katie got to play a song with her father rocking out and doing back up vocals on stage with her. It also marked a rare Toronto specialty where non-touring member Michael O'Grady/ who plays a mean tin whistle, took the stage with the band for the whole set. O'Grady was on stage the whole night as he also happened to be playing with Freeman Dre and the Kitchen party who started off this raucous night. 'The Mahones' are truly one of the hardest working bands that I have had the pleasure of meeting, they are also simply relentless both on and off stage. When it comes to putting in time with their fans or keeping up with their grueling tour schedule for the last 20 years, they never seem to lapse. 'The Mahones' have over ten albums, in fact, it was their tenth album, 'The Black Irish' that gained them international acclaim and skyrocketed them to their current worldwide cult status. They have just released a live album recorded in Italy and have plans to release a double album later in 2014. In other words this band is twenty four years young and they are clearly still building up steam. Catch one of Canadas hardest working bands live and stay tunned for their upcoming album "The Hunger & The Fight in 2014. The Pack A.D. New Album and Live Review and Photo By Gideon Greenbaum-hinder 'The Pack A.D.' is a well oiled force of nature. This truly dynamic duo was established in Vancouver and has been blowing minds since 2006. From the moment Becky Black took the stage she had complete command of both her guitar and voice. She also unleashed a fearsome, piercing stare on the audience for most of the show, whilst also conveying an air of slight distraction or introversion, making her seem all the more mysterious and cool. Half the time Maya Miller acts like a zombie gangster whose hands are possessed by her drum sticks, the other half she is some sort of raging cavewoman without any thought of inhibitions, She is no benign counterpart. Toronto's 'Legendary Horseshoe Tavern' was packed to the gills, giving everyone that lovely sardine can feel. A massive and full sound for a two piece band, The Pack's chemistry on stage is palpable and their music is even less subdued live. Needless to say, they are quite well seasoned. I had the pleasure of interviewing Maya Miller and Becky Black a few years ago just after they had released their breakthrough album 'Unpersons' (2011). It became clear that these two women, who where down to earth and even a little awkward offstage, had molded cartoonishly epic stage characters to go along with their music that had elevated their live show to a riotous form of raw entertainment. The Pack A.D. just released their 5th full-length album 'Do Not Engage' on January 28th 2014 and they are still touring up a storm. The Pack's new album contains songs with very different compositional influences compared to where they started, but that should be expected for a fifth album. Jim Diamond produced 'Do Not Engage' and the album was recorded in an old chicken plant in Detroit. Diamond has also worked with the White Stripes, Electric Six and was bassist of the Dirtbombs. 'Do Not Engage' incorporates more accessible, melodic and pop-rock styles than any of their previous releases. Perhaps this means that The Pack are gearing up to surmount the stadium sized concert setting. They did of course play all of my old favorites except 'All Damn Day Long' (a cut from their first album which is very much straight up blues). They did however play 'Deer', tobre Matte', 'Sirens', 'Haunt You' and some high-energy new songs off the new album. By far, my favorite new live songs are 'Big Shot' and 'Battering Ram'. Every time I see The Pack A.D they deliver a more honed version of their own particular brand of hard-hitting rock spiked with punky distortion. Their music consistently maintains a catchy instant classic quality because of their slightly poppy and melodious compositional style. Of course their ultimate allegiance to the blues is why I am drawn to them. When it comes to live shows this was a sweaty, adrenaline filled, mind warping and pretty much top-notch experience all around. Little Foot Long Foot packed the Bovine Sex Club. Photographers where vying for real-estate for the entire show. They have been a gem of the Canadian music scene since 2007. The group started as a two-piece consisting of the astounding Joan Smith with her Joan Jett esque vocals and her classic rock guitar playing skills. She was paired with Bonham doppelganger Isaac Klein hammering the drums. Over the years Little Foot Long Foot has grown and gone through three prodigious different incarnations. Their latest appendage is heroic organ player Jeff Heisholt. Their set was mesmerizing with literally know lapses in energy even though Joan later admonished that she had a stomach bug that night. Along with their nearly constant tour schedule it is pretty obvious that these guys are going above and beyond. Thankfully old school rock has recently become current and prevalent in popular culture once more. The music of Little Foot Long Foot is a distinct adaptation of the amazing rebirth of this classic blues rock genre which sprouted in the 1970`s. They would be very at home opening for contemporary acts like The Black Keys, The White Stripes or classic groups like Foghat or Heart. The power of this music is most substantial when you get to stare it in the face. Their live show displayed an undeniable power and resolve, backed by a menacingly tight rhythm section. Those in the Bovine Sex Club were simply awe struck and I was one of a half dozen photographers crammed at the front. Joan has a cosmic amount of charisma and the pipes to back it up, she also has crazy hair. Their music is current yet classic, it is simple and tremendously satisfying. This three piece has a colossal sound and is proof that composition is at the root of all great music. Little Foot Long Foot is a constantly evolving entity. Some bittersweet news is that Isaac Klein is leaving the band to pursue the noble quest of fatherhood. So pay close attention to their next couple of shows if you want to see their original lineup, as some big changes are imminent for this power trio- Keep track of their upcoming shows here! www.littlefootlongfoot.com 32 VandalaMagazine.Com - April 2014

eilinui the Sâ‚Źene5 Stepping Back on Stage - A Band Leaders Perspective By Eddy "Snow" Levitsky Here I am back to my daily routine and schedule. Home sweet home, they say and yet, something is amiss, something is clearly stuck on my mind similarly to that feeling you have when you forget if you've locked the door. Half of My mind is away, trying to relax and enjoy, trying to soak up all these awesome memories gathered throughout the tour and the other half...well the other half is hardcore stressing over finding a way to keep the machine going, keep up with the momentum. Indeed, there is this creeping pressure that I constantly feel as a band leader, a thankless job if I have ever seen one, that nags and pushes me my every breathing moment. You never really get used to it but you learn to channel it and it will, in return, help you grow as a musician, an artist and human being. After my little tour with HOLLOW, I still feel this energy that I got from the shows, from the public's response and from meeting new people. As a songwriter and performer I take into account the people's reactions towards songs, take note of particular moments of songs and definitely learn from watching some of the other bands performing. All of these little things including all of the logistics attached with organizing the shows are all nibbling away at my brain the whole of the tour. Questions take shape concerning my musical direction, my band, my resources, my friends which I intimately and constantly debate within my own mind. "Am I making music that will address a certain public demand or am I imposing my music on the public and hope to create a demand?" It's the age's long debate between the elitist approach versus a more popular one and quite frankly, this is one of those questions that does not have a definitive answer. For those of you out there who write and create, isn't sounding like truly yourself the hardest thing to accomplish as an artist? Of course, over the years you gain experience and technique and writing music becomes easier and faster but no one really recovers from a certain loss of innocence. Technicality replaces feeling and those riffs and melodies you used to do as a kid are now automatically brushed aside for being too simple or making no sense according to your evolved, learned and experienced musicianship. Needless to say, these debates have been the reason for many a blank paged writer-blocked night for me. These intellectual debates stem solely from moments where the band is stagnant and the pressure to produce something arises. You have to feed your band, your child but you have to work to feed it too. You have to nurture your relationship with fans while ironically closing yourself from the world to concentrate on creating something deeply personal and the only vacation you can take is to play shows, to live in that moment where logistics, money and public relations are of no concern anymore. Being on tour somewhat strokes your ego, it releases some of the stress of daily life. After preparing your show, practicing the songs for months, dealing with bookers, printing merchandise and contacting the media, being on tour and making new fans in remote, unknown locations is the biggest reward one can hope for. It's as if somebody just gives you a high-five, a pat on the back and tells you a well-deserved "good job man, keep up the good work". So here I am back to my daily routine and schedule, stressing out over small, probably trivial details that could better my band's look and sound, feeling the pressures that come with writer's block, dealing with the logistics necessary in setting up some new gigs and more than anything, impatiently waiting to step back on that stage. Music Marketing And The Illusion Of Optimal By James Moore
Imagine Dragons When it comes to independent musicians planning an album release or any kind of promotion efforts for that matter, artists often ask me about what the optimal situation or timing would be. It's typically a major worry and the thought behind it is "If we coordinate our album release with a marketing/PR campaign, a radio promotion campaign, tour dates, licensing efforts, and a fresh music video, that will be optimal." Is that true? Yes and no. Sure, if you can line up everything with people you trust all at the same time, that's wonderful and it will certainly feed itself in a positive way. The other side of this way of thinking, though, doesn't often get talked about. To tell you the truth, most artists who I speak to who decide to wait until things are "optimal"...disappear. Their motivation fizzles out while waiting for a hypothetical situation to emerge, whether it's finding the right venues or tour booking company, waiting for a crowd funding campaign to reach it's goal (or else the album won't happen), securing a credible director for a music video, or a common culprit...saving up for any of these things. What's the antidote for this way of thinking? Throw optimal out the window. Life is never optimal (expect in glorious moments of course, and this is never predictable or planned), and neither should the process of bringing your music to the world. If you work on your music all the time and consistently put your vitality and effort in, that's your optimal and it's perfect. Of course, there are cases where waiting is a good idea, but you'll intuitively know in these scenarios. Most of the time you should not put the brakes on and keep moving forward. We tend to think that most successful artists broke out in a very short time, 40 VandalaMagazine.Com - April 2014
-litoria I Speola when actually it was an extremely slow burn. Look at how long Imagine Dragons (6 years), No Doubt (11 years - something to seriously keep in mind), or Pretty Lights (6 years) were around before they became household names. This is reason enough to remove the "make it with this album" idea and think of it more as steps in a long staircase towards your destination. People who stay in the same spot, frozen, often like to have a lot of analytics. Why? Because it's easy to stay where you are, reading a bunch of data, and then excusing yourself for not doing anything because the data doesn't guarantee you success (which it never will). I see this all the time in business. People ask me how to gain a following online, start a business, a blog, or anything related. In my case, I chose something I was vitally interested in and I didn't go for optimal thinking. I just wrote what I was passionate about, was fairly consistent with blogging, invested consistently in advertising that most would never have engaged in because of lack of guarantees, built my contact list often by Googling any new blogs or publications that may feature my artists, learned more about promotion and 5E0 "as I went" (key words here), and reached out to more and more musicians as my skills grew. The result of all these things was that after about 2 years, Independent Music Promotions had become one of the more sought after PR companies around because word was spreading. It takes time, but it shouldn't take pulling your hair out. That will only happen if you stay still and over-strategize. Every example of people who were over-concerned with having a guarantee, wanting certain analytics before they took action in business or as a musician; none of them have progressed. Every email you send to a club owner or music blog is a step forward in the now. Every music industry book you read and share with your bandmates is a step forward. Every photo shoot, every festival or licensing opportunity, every targeted advertising campaign, and every free single offered to your fanbase...all steps forward. The more things you can do now as opposed to putting off to some hypothetical future point, the more power you gain, and the more trust in your own unique process. The worst possible thing you can do is engage in mountain thinking and create an immediate leap that needs to happen for you to achieve success, because it's always an impossible climb. Every musician who ever succeeded did so with a series of small achievements, so don't forgo those for the imaginary major ones. "Lost Together" Interview with Vocalist Sam Garter This month I had the distinct pleasure to chat with the very talented vocalist Sam from the Architects. Bonding over our ridiculously early interview, and a serious lack of caffeine, we chatted about their huge spring summer tour across Europe, their sixth album, Lost Forever- Lot Together, and how we are all in the same ship of life, and connected. Funny enough while discussing their recording of their new album at the legendary Fredrik's studio in Sweden. And how a certain previous cover artist flooded their living space causing friendly rivalry.
interview and Story By Lana Nimmons
Your album just came out last week- how is 2014 looking for Architects so far? You guys seem to have quite the tour happening.
- am: Looking pretty good right now, I don't know if my girlfriend and our families are too stoked. But it's looking pretty good, for us anyway. How's it been so far? Sam: Pretty crazy actually, we've been having shows sold out, and the overall response of the record has been pretty crazy considering how long we've been around for. To have a full tour kicking off after our sixth record is pretty awesome. This album you guys really took it to the next level, how do you think or do you think this album differs from your previous work? Sam: I don't know necessarily, cause we didn't go around it any differently. I think, we as people were in a good spot when we were writing it, and partially just good timing. I kinda think we figured out what we're all about as a band, and we kinda have grown up a little bit. Now we know the good bits from the sh*t bits {laugh*. What is your writing process like as a band? Pretty similar in its always been, Tom writes everything, and then he brings it to practice and we go from there. Then I demo vocals, it's been the same for the last 10 years now. The new album, 'Lost Forever//Lost Together', I am just interested to know about how the title came about and its meaning? Sam: The lyrics and the messages in the record is all about how we're all in this world together in time that could be quite scary. How you could become overwhelmed by fear, and how were surrounded by negative, and negative outcomes. The reality is, no matter what happens if the ship starts sinking we are all it together-so that's the kind of vibe of it. Its like no matter what happens, no matter how sh*t it is, no matter how much people try to distance themselves from the reality of what's going on, when sh*t hits the fan we're all going to be in it together. So that's the meaning behind it. What would you say are the running themes throughout this album? Sam: There are a lot of themes throughout it, in general I think it's a rather hopeful record. Whereas Daybreaker was a record bringing new information to light and talking about what's going on, this one kind of has more of a hopeful outlook on it- a resolution of some sort. Can you elaborate on that? Sam: I think just in general be kind of write about things that are happening at the moment, like songs on the record about Harashima, some songs on the record about Bradley Manning, there are songs on the record about Sea Shepherd - In general things that are happening, and that actually matter right now; which can be discussed, and can be interesting to everyone. I think there so many times you can write a song about a girl and how you spit up or whatever. So I think it's kind of a no brainer for us nowadays. We just read about interesting things that are going on in the world right now something that you can get a little bit more angry about. The song C.A.N.C.E.R on the album is spelt out like an acronym, is it actually about cancer? Sam: Yes it's about cancer, Tom's mom was diagnosed Last Summer. She got skin cancer, and yeah, Tom wrote a song about it. It was such a massive part of his life, and he thought she was going to die. He worked really hard on the song and it turned out really great. So this is one of the most important songs on the record for Tom. 46 VandaiaMagazine.Corn - April 2014
\Theralist San @amber It's actually one of my favorite songs on the album aside from Dead Man Talking and The Distant Blue- which was perfectly placed in the album. Sam: Yeah Distant Blue is one of my favorites on the album too, and one of my favorite songs we've ever done actually. It was a really nice ending to the record, kind of wraps it all up in a really cool way. Where did you record this album? Sam: We recorded with Fredrick Nordstrom in Sweden, him and Hendrick worked really hard on the album. We were there for about 5 weeks, it was just an awesome experience being out of England and really immersing ourselves into this record. Just incredible producers, really happy how it came out You guys are the second band in a row that recorded with Fredrick, last month I interviewed "I Killed the Prom Queen". I've heard the studios absolutely amazing and just a incredible producers. Sam: Yeah they flooded our living space because they f*cking flushed loads of the porridge down the sink. And we had to sleep in the studio for a week and a half of it which was cool{laughs} so thanks prom queen. Every time I speak to Jonas I rip him (laughs}. I saw your massive lineup tour wise, you guys have Jera On Air in Netherlands for example, are there any bands in particular you are looking forward to playing with? Sam: We just really love playing Europe because that's where our fan base isf I never really know who's playing at a show if I got there it's kind of like a potluck- you never know who's going to be there. What would you say is easiest part of recording? parr . Think in general just being there was pretty easy, we've been a band for so long. living in a studio together was easy, in general we had a really good time The fact we were able to just hang out and work as long as we wanted made everything really awesome. What would you say is the most challenging part of recording? Sam: Generally, the whole recording part was the worst part (laughs}. We are perfectionists, so, its like nothing's ever good enough for us. We always try and do better than we can, so we were pretty hard on ourselves, so that was the hardest bit. We sometimes trap ourselves up in tangles doing so. I noticed that you are not only a full vegan band, but also a member of PETA, why is being a part of PETA, and being vegan so important to you? Sam: We we're up one evening watching documentaries, like Earthlings, and we kind of wanted to know more about what's going on in the world, and more we learned it was kind of an eye opener it became a no brainer. It was also partially for health, but as for the compassionate side of it, it was no brainer for us. You know, if you can do something do it. I really don't like the whole "ignorance is bliss" deal. As soon as I found out what was going on I immediately wanted to do something about it. Lost Forever/ /Lost Together was released March 11 and you can grab a copy for yourself at all the usual retailers. For those who want see them live you are in luck! The Architects are currently on tour in Europe and will be making their way over to North America April 23rd. The Howlin' Brothers Are Back With "Trouble" Nashville-based, country-blues trio The Howlin' Brothers have just announced the release of their latest album Trouble, due out on April 29, 2014 through Readymade/Dine Alone Records in Canada. The vinyl configuration will follow on May 27, 2014. Produced and Engineered by indie rocker and singer-songwriter Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs), 17: Trouble, is the follow-up record to The Howlin' Brothers critically acclaimed 2013 release HOWL. The bands latest release features 13 new original songs that were heavily influenced by the people they met and struggles that they encountered on the road over the past year. Fiddle/banjo and vocalist Ian Craft says: "Trouble is an awesome recipe for tasty sounds. Your ears will be happy to take the journey with us from Jay's songs of love and Cajun food, to Ben's travels to get a mojo hand and find the girl who has yet to Joshua Black Wilkkins present herself, to my tunes of love gone wrong and finally, a little moment in an old church on top of a smoky ole Tennessee mountain top." Benson describes Trouble as "effortless artistry . . . woebegone, lovelorn and wrought with pain, but not without installments of lightheartedness and beauty, downtrodden and then uplifted." He adds, "The Howlin' Brothers are somehow able to conjure images of a bygone era and make it believable. The listener gets a glimpse into the troubadour lifestyle, traveling (among other places) to Louisiana for a Cajun romp on the bayou and across the Arizona desert to California on a search for a misses. It's a journey very much worth the while." The Howlin' Brothers had a very good year in 2013ff following the release of HOWL. Featuring Warren Haynes on one track, "Big Time"), the album brought instant success to the band. In one year they graced the cover of Acoustic Guitar magazine's January 2014 issue; recorded in the legendary Sun Studio; were featured in a national PBS show (The Sun Sessions, which will broadcast throughout 2014 in more than 100 markets); shared the stage with Grammy째 winner Ricky Skaggs; placed on over 17 end-of-year "best of" lists, and reached #6 on the Americana Music radio chart (was also #30 on that year-end chart, the highest charting position by an act/artist new to the format last year). The trio toured their brand of "old-time string country blues with an indie-rock edge" throughout the U.S. and into Canada. They ended their HOWL Tour in style last year opening for and then participating in the Brendan Benson & Friends benefit concert (for The David Lynch Foundation) at The Ryman Auditorium in late December. They will reprise the same role on the 2014 version of this show in London at Shepherd's Bush this coming October 11th. In the fall of 2013, The Howlin' Brothers recorded and digitally released The Sun Studio Session EP in the U.S. and Canada. Recorded as part of the PBS series The Sun Studio Sessions, this six-song collection featured four new originals (one of which, "Troubled Waltz," was re-recorded for TROUBLE), a re-record of "Tennessee Blues" (from HOWL), and a cover of the Carl Perkins' classic "Dixie Fried." A limited edition vinyl pressing will be released via independent music stores on May 27th in the U.S. and Canada. The Used Release "Imaginary Enemy" Seasoned Alt-Rock quartet, have just releases "Imaginary Enemy" and are currently on the road for a co-headlining tour of U.S. and Canada with Taking Back Sunday, featuring special guests Tonight Alive and Sleepwave. Imaginary Enemy is the band's sixth studio full-length, following the success of 2012's Vulnerable, which debuted at #8 on theBillboard Top 200 charts, selling 32,000 copies in its first week alone and marking the group's fourth top 10 album. A band that has never shied away from using their music as a platform to ask the tough questions and evoke political conversation, The Used brings that passion tenfold on Imaginary Enemy. A palpable sense of the band's commitment, frustration, and optimism for the future lies at the very core of each track. "We the people, in order to form a more perfect planet, must question the way the world works - and where the world is heading,"says The Used frontman, Bert McCracken, in a statement about the new album. He continues, "Some view art as a way of escaping reality; others view art as a Mirror reflecting our sometimes sad society; we believe art can be a weapon, used to shape the very world we live in. The Used is proud to present to you, 'Imaginary Enemy'." Produced by the acclaimed John Feldmann, who has championed The Used the since their very inception in 2001, Imaginary Enemy, puts The Used's political frustrations and commitment to social change at its forefront. The album opens with "Revolution," where McCracken urges, "So from now on I pledge allegiance/ To a world that's so much different / Where no one suffers, everyone is free / Revolution starts with me." This passionate optimism lies at the core of Imaginary Enemy. The band proved their unwavering staying power with the recent radio success of their new single, "Cry" on Sirius XM's Faction, Octane and Sixx Sense channels. The radio success echoes fan's high demand to catch The Used on the road, as tickets for their upcoming co-headlining tour with Taking Back Sunday have been rapidly selling out, causing the band to add a second show at Los Angeles's Palladium, as well as two additional shows at New York City's Best Buy Theater. In addition to selling out their two dates in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, as well as three dates in New York, the tour completely sold out for dates in San Antonio, San Francisco, Denver, San Diego, Phoenix, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Hartford, Boston, Philadelphia, Silver Spring, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. The band kicked off the tour on March 14th in Dallas, TX and will be on the road through April 27th, where they end the tour in Orlando, FL. Small Black Releases "Real People" Video Off Forthcoming Album SMAI I
k F AL PEOPI
Small Black has released a video for "Real People"F the title track off of their forthcoming 12" EP. Helmed by Nick Bentgen, this video perpetuates the off-beat beauty from Bentgen and Small Black's previous joint venture for "Breathless". Bentgen described the concept behind the video and working with Small Black: "I love talking about movies with Josh. He's a huge cinephile, and we recently got to talking about sci-fi films -- the big ones from the 70s and '80s. All the guys in Small Black are freaks for anything Sci Fi, especially Ryan and Juan, and their conspiracy theories are incredible." Josh sent me "Real People", and I couldn't believe what I
was hearing. The song had this mysterious, unfathomablequality. I wanted to put those feelings in the context of a sci-fi movie -the kind that doesn't exist anymore -- where every scene is throwing a heightened emotion at you. Small Black made such an immense track that I had to visually keep up. So I had to work with aliens", Watch the Official Video for "Real People" at www.youtube.com/SmallBlackVEVO Real People, the new 12" EP from Small Black, features guest vocals from Frankie Rose on two tracks as well as a cover of "The Downtown Lights" by Scottish legends The Blue Nile. Copies of the Real People vinyl 12" will be available at all of Small Black's upcoming tour dates with Snowmine. Real People is now out and available in vinyl and digital formats from retailers. New Mark E Song "Being Hiding" From Upcoming LP Producer Mark E hails from the West Midlands, an area of the UK that was at the heart of the industrial revolution and was also hit hardest by the decline of UK industry in the 1970s, and again by the economic crisis of our own time. It's an area with a distinct sound and atmosphere, one that manifests in the music of artists as diverse as Black Sabbath and The Specials, and one that plays into many of the ideas behind Mark E's new record Product of Industry. The album's title is a subtle nod to the producer's past and heritage. He explains, "The name lies in the manufacturing past of the area I grew up, [and] the manufacturing past of my family. [It references] how the decline of industry in the Midlands UK changed the landscape physically and socially — I'm now a music producer and DJ, and this is totally different to my grandparents who were truck drivers and sheet metal workers. [The title discusses] how things have changed, and it's also about how I came to be in this position, due to the current global financial situation. I lost my job due to it, [which led to me] trying out music — and here I am, a product of industry, both currently and historically." As befitting its genesis, there's something distinctly mechanistic to the music on
Product of Industry — as Mark E says, "The music is grinding, continuous, heavy, relentless." You can hear this idea in the industrial clatter that underpins "Kultra Kafe," the grinding rhythm of "Bog Dance," the pounding beat of "Eganix." Part of this sound is generated by the album's reliance on classic machinery of a musical kind: "My approach was very different on Product of Industry compared to Stonebreaker," Mark E explains. "I approached it with an album in mind. The technique is [also] different — this is majority analogue, whereas Stonebreaker was 100% digital." But just as importantly, this reliance on classic analogue synths also means that the sound of Product of Industry is shot through with a certain warmth, a reminder that there's humanity at the heart of this industrial environment and this industrial sound.. The music, explains the producer, was designed to be "soulful and delicate," and in many ways its abiding warmth is a throwback to the classic sounds of Chicago house. They're firmly located on the other side of the Atlantic, though, and several tracks incorporate "vocal snippets of the language and accent of the West Midlands." The result is an album that's steeped in history — both musical and social — but also sounds utterly contemporary. It's a testament to the way the creative spirit can flourish even in the most adverse of circumstances, and also an album-long evocation of the idea that the machines we build are ultimately expressions and extensions of ourselves. Fast RomantinQuestion Life After Death in Their New Video gaiti e6.;01 1411.
Fast Romantics do not fear the idea of death but instead look it straight in the face in their new video for the title track from their sophomore album Afterlife Blues.Wrap your head around this quirky video - filled with colourful and unique characters - this one is sure to make you question life after death.
The new video for Afterlife Blues premiered and the band had this to say about the video: "Death can be a dirty word when you're making pop music, but that's kind of funny because death is one of the most universally pop concepts out there, seeing as how it happens to everyone. "Afterlife Blues" is a make believe imagining of what happens when you die. Whether you're celebratinga life well-lived, or you're all full of lamentation and regrets... one thing's for sure; death is gonna be weird." For their 2013 sophomore album the group teamed up with producer Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, Mother Mother, Hannah Georgas) for a second time. Redekopp also produced their EP Kidcutter. This match had been very successful with the bands music finding its way onto many TV shows and films, including Shameless, Breaking In, Vampire Diaries, and Pretty Little Liars. Plus in the midst of their Mountain Mountains tour, the band also heard they were nominated for a 2014 SiriusXM Indies award for Pop Artist/Group or Duo of the Year. HrifRK Starts New Chapter and Psychic 9-5 Club Psychic 9-5 Club marks the beginning of a new chapter for HTRKI It's an album that looks back on a time of sadness and struggle, and within that struggle they find hope and humour and love. It's Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang's first album recorded entirely as a duo—former band member Sean Stewart died halfway through the recording of their last LP, 2011's Work (Work Work). Though the record is instantly recognisable as HTRK—Standish's vocal delivery remains central to the band's sound, while the productions are typically lean and clubby—they've found ample room for exploration within this framework. Gone are the reverb-soaked guitar explorations of 2009's Marry Me Tonight and the fuzzy growls that ran through Work (Work Work). They've been replaced with something tender, velvety and polished. This is HTRIc but the flesh has been stripped from their sound, throwing the focus on naked arrangements and minimalist sound design.
9-5 CLUB
The album was recorded at Blazer Sound Studios in New Mexico with Excepter's Nathan Corbin, who had previously directed the video clip for Work (Work, Work) cut "Bendin." Inviting a third party into their world was no easy decision, but in Corbin they found a kindred spirit. The LP was then refined and reworked in Australia at the turn of 2013, before the finishing touches were applied in New York during the summer. Of all the themes that run through Psychic 9-5 Club, love is the most central. The word is laced throughout the album in lyrics and titles—love as a distraction, loving yourself, loving others. Standish's lyrics explore the complexities of sexuality and the body's reaction to personal loss, though there's room for wry humour—a constant through much of the best experimental Australian music of the past few decades. Standish explores her vocal range fully—her husky spoken-word drawl remains, but we also hear her laugh and sing. Equally, Yang's exploratory production techniques—particularly his well-documented love of dub—are given room to shine. They dip headlong into some of the things that make humans tick—love, loss and desire—with the kind of integrity that has marked the band out from day one Psychic 9-5 Club is truly an album for the body and for the soul. Final Conflict To Reissue Iconic Ashes To Ashes LP The mischief makers at Tankcrimes are extremely honored to announce the reissue of Ashes To Ashes, the 1987 debut LP from legendary Los Angeles hardcore punk assassins, Final Conflict. Influenced by the British punk severity of bands like Discharge and one of the first groups to fuse hardcore's simplistic and manic audio fury and heavy metal's musicianship with any degree of success, the spiky-haired punks in Final Conflict manifested a sound that would go on to be emulated by hundreds of bands to come, none ever reaching the level of raw power this LP delivered. Originally issued on Pushead's Pusmort Records in 1987 then later released via Relapse Records in 1994, this monumental release now find's a new home at Tankcrimes Records. Available on vinyl and 2CD, the original Ashes To Ashes tapes were found, baked, restored and transferred by Ulysses Noriega at The Laundry Room Recording Studio in Los Angeles, California and remastered by Jack Control at Enormous Door Studios in Austin, Texas. Whitechapel Announce "Mono" YouTube Vocal Cover Contest a•
Returning with the fifth full-length of their decimating career, there is no stopping the juggernaut that is Whitechapel. Our Endless War is the culmination of everything the Knoxville, Tennessee sextet have worked toward since their inception. A ruthlessly honed album that refuses to compromise on brutality, it is also by far their most streamlined, atmospheric, and emotionally powerful release, pushing every aspect of their sound to the next level.
In conjunction with the release of Our Endless War, Whitechapel have created an online contest with their new single "Mono". Vocalist Phil Bozeman has I.NDE.F.S.S. WAR a video message for fans that are interested and would like to enter the contest, which can be viewed at www.youtube.com/phillybo1985. The object of the contest is that fans will film themselves doing a vocal cover of the new song "Mono" and then upload their videos to YouTube. The contest ends April 21st and the winner will be announced on April 22nd and will receive a grand prize package that consists of: 1 Deluxe CD Bundle of Our Endless War, a 30 minute vocal coaching lesson with Phil Bozeman via Skype and their video will be featured on Phil's YouTube Channel. When it came to tracking the album the band considered no one beyond Mark Lewis, who helmed Whitechapel. For the artwork, the band turned again to Aaron Marsh, who supplied Whitechapel with its stark, arresting imagery, but again they wanted to push things to the next level. With the sound maturing the band felt like the artwork needed to reflect that. Music flews. egera Sigmecl Rock Legend Ace Frehley Signs lAtorldwide Multi-Album Deal
•
2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ace Frehley will release Spave Invader, his first new solo album in five years, via Entertainment One Music (eOne Music) on June 24th, 2014. The album will include at least nine brand new original songs as well as a cover of Steve Miller's "The Joker." This album is the first release under Frehley's new universal deal on eOne Music.
Frehley has released an official statement surrounding the exciting news: "Life on Earth has been very good to me, and the body of work I've created over the years has withstood the test of time. Today I see no obstacles before me and my creativity has never been more fine tuned. Growing up in an Alien world has enhanced my senses and allowed me to succeed where others would have failed. The best is yet to come! 01°'
Widely known as the original "Space Ace" and founding guitarist for 16 cumulative years (over 2 tenures) of the multi platinum selling rock band KISS, Frehley is demonstrably the most popular original member. In addition to having the best selling solo album career (vintage or current) among the original foursome, Frehley's self titled Ace Frehley, released in 1978, went on to sell over one million copies, producing the only Top 40 single, "New York Groove," from any of the legendary KISS solo albums; (peaking at #13). The massive hit was most recently featured in an episode of cult show "Entourage" and was also KISS' second bestselling download in 2012, besting such KISS Army anthems as "I Was Made For Lavin' You," "Beth" and "Calling Dr. Love" even after 36 years. Since departing from KISS, Frehley went on to release four more solo albums and one live EP including his most recent effort, Anomaly in 2009, which debuted at #27 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and received a welcoming response among critics. "'Anomaly' shows why many rock and metal guitarists list 'Space Ace' as a prime six-string influence," said Rolling Stone. Ace Frehley will participate in the 2014 Revolver Golden Gods Awards show by presenting the Dimebag Darrell "Best Guitarist" Award alongside label-mate Zakk Wylde. The awards show will take place on April 23, 2014 at the CLUB NOKIA Theater in Los Angeles. Tickets are on sale now at www.axs.com/events/ 248802/revolver-golden-gods-tickets Frehley comments. "It's exciting to finally be part of the Golden Gods, awards and an honor to be part of any Dimebag memorial award. He was a friend, and I know everyone misses him, as do Ace FrehleyOnline at www.acefrehley.com and www.facebook.comfofficialacefrehley

Music News. Signed Sreakout Artist Forrest Day Signs with Breaking Bands LLC Alice Cooper. Bon Jovi. Rob Zombie. Countless notable bands have made waves by carrying the namesake of their lead singer, and it's time to make room for one more. Expanding from their local stomping ground of San Francisco, CA and asserting their engaging sound and live show up and down the west coast, eclectic audio-artists Forrest Day are poised to take on the big time. In addition to turning new heads every day, Forrest Day recently signed with Breaking Bands LLC, the new management firm directed and founded by the powerhouse team of Testament vocalist and co-manager Chuck Billy, Adrenaline PR CEO Maria Ferrero, and former MegaForce Records and Crazed Management owners Jon and Marsha Zazula. Chuck Billy states, "The first time I saw Forrest Day play live, they were just such a fresh sound to my ears and I thought the frontman Forrest was such a great vocalist with an original style. Coincidentally, I ran into them at Soundwave Studio where Testament rehearses (they happen to rehearse there, too), and it turned out that they were looking for management. The rest is history." Maria Ferrero adds, "Working with Forrest Day is very rewarding for me because Forrest Day's music is the epitome of outside the box: unique and inspiring." "We love working with Forrest Day because we're gluttons for punishment and we're absolutely in love with Forrest's mind," adds Ronny and Marsha Zazula. Forrest Day will perform at The Viper Room in Hollywood, CA on may 15, 2014 at 8:00PM sharp. Come on out and take a listen to what Forrest Day has to offer! Details at www.forrestday.com
The Mohrs Sign To Organ Records and Release Video Canadian rock outfit The Mohrs have signed to Vancouver based Light Organ Records. The band fronted by charismatic Winnipeg-native Jackie Mohr, is gearing up to release their debut self-titled LP produced by Hawksley Workman later this year, bringing listeners back to a time where chicks ruled the rock and rollstage. Jackie found her passion for guitar at age thirteen and immediately started taking lessons. When most girls were playing flute and listening to Britney Spears, Jackie was practicing hard rocking guitar licks and jamming out to AAC/DC. Guitar lessons lead to a teaching gig, and a deep friendship with guitarist Marc Girardin. As teenagers and young adults, Jackie and Marc headed the rock band "Living In Red," and released an EP and toured across the prairies. Although "Living In Red" experienced some success, professional aspirations took members in different directions, and in 2012, Jackie and Marc found themselves packing their bags and heading to Toronto. Working with their friend and mentor, Hawksley Workman, Jackie and Marc honed in on their songwriting and voice, which would eventually become the sound of The Mohrs. Adding musical friends Max Trefler (drums) and Greg Markham (bass) into the mix, The Mohrs were complete. Almost a year and half later, The Mohrs have put together an album that is reminiscent of '90s grunge and 1805 rock, and have shared the stage with Hawksley Workman, Danko Jones, K-OS and Electric Six. Their debut album (produced by Workman), being released on Light Organ Records, is a powerful record that combines sophisticated riff-based rock-pop and it set to be released in 2014. AR C ISE Music Festival Announces First Wave Lineups for 2014
The 2014 ARISE Music Festival hit the ground running with first wave of artist announcements including GALACTIC with special guests Chali 2na (Jurassic 5) and Lyrics Born, Keller William's Grateful Grass featuring Keller Williams, Billy Nershi (String Cheese Incident), andReed Mathis Groundation, Tribal Seeds, Nahko and Medicine for the People, the return of Kanrnal, plus the audio/visual extravaganza that is Quixotic. With more exciting artist announcements to come, 2014 looks to be a promising year for the 2nd annual ARISE Music Festival. "Colorado's Best Festival, 2013" - Grateful Web Over the last 10 years, Colorado has earned a national reputation as being a hotbed of musical entertainment. Known best for its near weekly music scene at the rivaling Red Rocks Amphitheater, a new home has evolved for music lovers seeking a full 3-day camping festival experience withiin another red rock landscape backdrop. Unlike Colorado's renowned amphitheater, the 100 acre Sunrise Ranch property that hosts the ARISE Music Festival is only open to the public on this scale, once a year. With a main stage focus on high-energy, socially-conscious performers the 2013 event wowed attendees with its diverse programming along with full day yoga class scheduling, community theme camps, workshops and co-creative events for attendees of all ages. Featuring 4 stages of music including an improvisation space for attendees in a bustling coffee/tea house, the festival places an emphasis on the creative potential of its guests. The ARISE Music Festival has quickly established itself as a landmark in a growing movement of music fans who are working to foster positive societal change on a global level and in their own communities. The 3-day ARISE Music Festival will take place August 8-10, 2014 at the breathtaking Sunrise Ranch in Loveland, Colorado. Located just 25 minutes from Fort Collins, 45 minutes from Boulder and just over an hour from Denver, the ARISE Festival takes place in an optimal mountain valley, at the foothills of the Rockies, perfect for out of state travelers and locals alike. EVENT DETAILS: ARISE Music Festival Aug 8-10, 2014, Sunrise Ranch, Loveland, CO Tickets are on sale now and another wave of artist announcements will be released soon. Stay tuned to the official ARISE Festival website at www.arisefestival.com or on the social channels at www.facebook.comiarisemusicfestivat for more information. 72 VandalaMagazine.Com - April 2014
