A Rare Large London Del ware Vase, Circa 1670-1675 Dimensions: Height: 12 inches.
The large London del ware ovoid vase is painted in blue in Chinese style with birds and insects, including a dragonfly, amid flower bouquets. Robert Aronson, one of the authorita ve experts on nglazed earthenware has wri en to me as follows: The en re group of objects that were considered to be Frankfurt faience through the early 1990's is now accepted as being Dutch 1660-80. It is indeed the type/group of objects like the vase that you are showing. I have gone head to head with Jonathan (Horne) over this in the past and he assumed some pieces to be English, while I thought they were Dutch. Although this vase at first glance looks Dutch, there are some oddi es; the shape and par cularly the very narrow and rimmed foot (the Longridge vase, doesn't have that edge on the foot – that looks more like the Dutch vases) and the watery-ness of the paintwork. These two points considered I would tend towards English, rather than Dutch.
Inspired by Chinese blue and white porcelain of the Ming dynasty, the decora on on the present vase is dis nguished by its large scale, the richness of the flowers, the delicacy of the shading, the whimsical dragonflies, bu erflies and birds. Horne points out that the dis nctly detailed pain ng is also found on several pieces including four posset pots da ng 1674 to 1678 (Lipski collec on, #’s 899, 903, 907, & 908), a mug 1674 (Lipski 776) and a scroll salt dated 1675 (Lipski 1538).
