Taken from Manure: Is it a waste product or a valuable asset? Ohio Beef Cattle June 29 2016 Letter A publicationof the Ohio State University Extension – Randy Pepin, University of Minnesota Extension Educator Beef Team The answer to this question may get you varied responses depending on who you ask. Some non-farm neighbors may detest it solely because of the smell. Others may blame any water impairment on livestock manure, justified or not. Some may view manure as an opportunity for capturing methane as a “green” energy source through anaerobic digestion. Still others wish to burn the whole product for energy production. Of course, there is the standard option of using manure as fertilizer. All sources of livestock manure contain an excellent source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N,P,K), organic matter, and several micronutrients. Many parts of the USA and the world do not have the luxury of abundant cropland in close proximity to livestock production as the Midwest USA. In the Midwest, millions of cropland acres need what manure has to offer. I have spent considerable time discussing phosphorus balance. So what is an out of balance phosphorus farm? A farm system is out of phosphorus balance when imports of phosphorus exceed exports. If a farm system remains out of balance for a few years, the usual result is increased soil phosphorus levels. The challenge is it usually takes more acres for a livestock farm to achieve phosphorus balance than the number of acres needed to utilize all the nitrogen in manure for corn production. Why is it important that high phosphorus soil tests increase the risk of losing phosphorus from either soil erosion or surface water runoff from snowmelt or a rain event? The risk is that any phosphorus that enters surface waters can produce blue/green algae blooms and may contribute to the hypoxic, or dead, zone in the Gulf of Mexico. A result of the phosphorus balance project is a series of case studies based on actual livestock farms. Each case study highlights a different management option a livestock farmer might use to help mitigate an out of balance phosphorus situation. The University of Minnesota Extension Manure website has these case studies posted. There you will find case studies, built on real farm situations, with a what-if scenario illustrating what would happen to their phosphorus balance if they would perform any one of the management options. Some of the topics illustrated in the case studies are: Increasing land base, increasing crop production on existing acres, reducing/eliminating corn starter containing phosphorus, lowering phosphorus content in the ration, reducing feed shrink, incorporating manure to decrease nitrogen losses permitting lower application rates, exporting manure, and stopping/reducing importing of manure. Not all of these practices are an option for every producer, but most farmers have one or two options. Increasing land base is an obvious but often difficult option for many reasons. Previous articles addressed some of these practices in greater length – for reference check the UMN Extension Dairy website under the manure section. So what about our crop farming neighbors who could use some manure on their land? Is it worth it to them to purchase manure from their livestock neighbors? Usually it is, especially if their fields need all three major nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. How much should they pay? That depends on the manure analysis, the soil tests of the fields receiving the manure, and the crop planted. With current economics, liquid dairy manure could be worth up to $200 per acre to the farmer purchasing the manure if the dairy farmer performs and pays for the application. For a closer estimate, check out the UMN Extension manure value worksheet. One of the latest discussions in agriculture is “soil health”. This topic encompasses many practices including minimum tillage, crop diversity, and cover crops; one element always present is livestock manure, pasturing livestock is frequently the discussed practice. Nevertheless, the crucial component is reaping the benefits of livestock manure by increasing the organic matter and soil structure. This should be of no surprise to many livestock producers who have acquired new ground that has been manure deprived for many years. They “wake up the ground” by incorporating manure into the soil, usually increasing crop yields. Livestock producers have a phenomenal resource – manure. All too frequently, non-livestock farmers do not want to bother with the “inconvenience” of manure; compared to commercial fertilizer it is cumbersome, expensive to handle, can cause planting delays, and does not perfectly match the crop’s nutrient needs. So is manure a waste product or a resource? If mismanaged, manure can cause social and environmental issues, but when properly managed, manure is a tremendous resource that provides many benefits for livestock producers and anyone land applying manure.

Not From the Boardroom As of November 5, 2015 I was no an longer active member of the Board of Directors of the American Angus Association. My efforts to be elected to a second term were unsuccessful and I became a former member of the Board. In January 2016 and February 2016 issues of the Indiana Angus News I submitted articles on Board actions that were taken during 2015. The articles were an attempt to inform readers as to what and why the actions that effected the membership were taken during my term on the Board. Photos and information on the newly elected Board members has appeared in the Angus Journal. I failed to remember that not all News readers are Journal readers. In no way was I attempting to mislead any readers. A letter stating that I am seeking election to the Board in the November 2016 election has been sent to Allen Moczygemba, Chief Executive Officer of the American Angus Association.

In Passing Marlene Ann Hirt Taken from the Greensburg Daily News

Marlene Ann Hirt, 85, of Greensburg, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2016.

Born March 31, 1931, in Brookville, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Selm) Metzler.

She graduated from Springfield High School in 1949. She married Paul J. Hirt of Oldenburg on April 11, 1953, and he survives in Greensburg.

She was a longtime member of the Daughters of Isabella, Rural Couples, St.

Maurice Catholic Church, and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greensburg.

As the steward of her family, she played an integral part in the success of her

husband's business, the Greensburg Veterinary Clinic. She played the sideline

role of manning the two-way radio after hours as Dr. Hirt was out on the road

on his vet calls.

She loved their cattle farm where she was often found helping Paul move

cattle, working in the garden, tending to her flowers, or cooking a fabulous

meal for family and friends. Her favorite pastime was following and supporting her children and grandchildren in their many activities. She spent many years

warming a seat at the Decatur County 4-H Fair and Indiana State Fair cattle

shows. In support of her love for the showmanship portion of the cattle shows,

she worked alongside Paul on the Tom Swain Showmanship committee for

many years.

She was truly the backbone and matriarch of the Hirt family. She taught us

that family comes first, to stand up for what you believe, and if something isn't

right to fix it, now! Her faith in God and love of family were abundantly clear. We take comfort in knowing that she is now dancing with Jesus.

She will be truly missed by her surviving family which includes her husband,

Paul; sons, David Hirt and Mark (Carol) Hirt, both of Greensburg; daughters,

Cindy (Larry) McCamment, Mary Jo (Jeff) Lee, Susan Lecher, all of Greensburg, and Lisa (Mike) Sigmon, of Berryville, Arkansas; brothers, Charles (Ruth)

Metzler, of Chicago, Illinois, Richard (Peg) Metzler, of Indianapolis, and Barbara

Metzler, of Conroe, Texas; grandchildren, Keegan (Katie) McCamment, Kieran (Becky) McCamment, Heather (Scott) Koors, Devin (Katie) Hirt, Sarah Hirt,

Cheyenne Lee, Trevor Lee, Takisha Lee, Kylee Sigmon, and Logan Sigmon;

great-grandchildren, Nolan McCamment, Payton Koors, Victoria Koors, Presston

Saylor, and Madyson Saylor; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and

great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Nelson Metzler and Robert Metzler, and son-in-law, Jerry "Pete" Lecher.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 27 at Porter-Oliger-Pearson

Funeral Home in Greensburg with a rosary being prayed at 2:30 p.m. Funeral Services begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 28 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father John Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic

Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Decatur County,

1201 N. Lincoln St., Greensburg, IN 47240 or to the St. Mary's Building Fund, 1331 E Hunter Robbins Way, Greensburg, IN 47240.

Miranda Reiman Industry Information Assistant Director mreiman@certifiedbeef.com Certified Angus Beef LLC 308.784.2294 Consumer trends headline beef conference “The prosperity of this entire industry lies with the consumer.” Ag economist Ted Schroeder made that statement during the recent Beef Improvement Federation meetings in Manhattan, Kan., June 15-17, but it summed up the theme of the opening session. Schroeder and fellow Kansas State University ag economist Glynn Tonsor kicked off the conference, talking about beef demand in the next two decades. Tonsor pointed out four competitive advantages the U.S. and Canada have over trading partners: • Trust that the product is safe and correctly identified • A grain-finishing system that supports high-quality production • Solid infrastructure, including transportation and research expertise • Property rights and business practices that encourage investment “We are not a low-cost producer,” Tonsor said, and we have fierce competition. Countries like Australia and Brazil are “not standing still waiting for us to get our act together,” he continued, suggesting that market opportunities will “pass us by if we don't improve on communication, coordination, signaling.” Not only will the demographics of our domestic consumers change in the next few decades, to include more Hispanics and other backgrounds, but beef’s core customer base will increasingly rely more on exports. “Global is where our major growth potential rests,” Schroeder said. It’s more important than ever to focus on trade negotiations and overcoming trade barriers. “The goal is to create value for everyone,” said John Stika, president of Certified Angus Beef LLC, He addressed the crowd on “The Consumer-driven Food Business.” That’s the only way beef-eaters will buy more at a higher price. Something they’ve proven they will do if the perceived value, in the “price-value relationship,” is solid. Sika shared Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand demand as a case study. It’s increased 98.1% since 2009, at the same time USDA Choice demand decreased. The price side of the equation was steep when compared to other proteins, but “taste-driven consumers” still chose beef, he said. “During the worst economy and a tighter cowherd, premium products continued to grow," Stika said. In 2015, beef prices were 57% higher than pork and 207% higher than chicken (see chart). “If we expect consumers to buy our product, we have to up our game,” he said. That includes continuing to engage consumers, not just with a good story, but by verifying that story. Brad Morgan, Performance Food Group, said building relationships is key for his company. “Our customers really and truly want to know, ‘Do you have our back?’” he said. Among the most powerful groups to have an impact on beef are moms, millennials, and meat lovers. Moms control $20 trillion in buying power while meat lovers understand beef and are squarely focused on quality, Morgan said. “They will open their wallets to pay for the best,” his slide noted. “Millennials, whether you appreciate them or not, they like beef. They just want to know more about it,” Morgan said. In addition to a story, the product must live up to it, and Keith Belk, Colorado State University meat scientist, talked about traits cattlemen should focus on to be sure it does. His presentation noted tenderness as the most important measure in eating satisfaction, but “several studies have shown that when tenderness reaches an acceptable level, flavor becomes the most important driver.” The No. 1 thing producers have done in response to the call for improved quality is “turn the cattle black,” Belk said, asking the beef community to do even more He suggested looking into the microbiome, or the animal and the bacteria that naturally live on it, to develop future tools. “We need to learn to take advantage and capitalize on that,” Belk said. Beef quality has improved, and we are “in the most consumer-centric times we’ve seen,” Stika said. It comes down to this advice he shared: “We need to change our perspective from, ‘I’m in the cow business,’ to ‘I’m in the food business.’”
