David McMahon, Sr. died on March 23 last year – just four days after we completed the 2016 Belle Point sale, and a few days before his 85th birthday and Easter, the holy celebration of spiritual renewal. About 25 years ago, the manager of the Farmers Co-Op asked, “Dave, when are you gonna retire?” Dave clarified, “Does retired mean I get to do whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do it?” The man said, “Yeah!” Dave announced, “Well, I guess I’m already retired!”
David McMahon loved life and loved his work. And he never stopped doing all the things he loved! You may not know there’s a little secret to David McMahon’s famous boundless energy, and zest for life and work.
When he was in his early 30’s, his doctor prescribed a midday nap, every day, to get him off his feet and help control the symptoms of gout. We figure 50 years of 20–minute naps added up to 365,000 minutes of extra sleep that greatly contributed to his health and productivity! Those snoozes created “a whole new day” for him. When most everyone else would be winding down in late afternoon, his power nap had given him a fresh start. From about two in the afternoon ‘til dark he had renewed energy to think, and plan, and WORK on all the things he cared about! David may never have been a strict “rule follower,” in fact he was a bit of a maverick. Truly, an original thinker. But he was very respectful – of other people, and cultural traditions, and the natural order of life. He respected imagination, and vision that creates IDEAS. He respected deep thought that develops into a PLAN. He respected confidence, and the kind of “roll up your sleeves” effort it takes to put plans into ACTION.
Randy Travis sings a truth: “It’s not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it’s what you leave behind you when you go.”
David McMahon left behind a wonderful wife and a vibrant, loving family that works together and cares about our community. He left behind a dynamic business and ranching operation that he tried to improve every day of every year. We keep learning of the impacts he left behind in the lives of countless people he helped, often without anyone else ever knowing. He left local organizations and worthy causes much better than he found them many years ago – 4-H, Boy Scouts, two youth shelters, two hospitals, his own church and the churches of his friends, numerous improvement projects in our city, county and state, the wonderful Subiaco Monastery, his alma mater Oklahoma State University and the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, and, of course, the National Junior Angus program and the Angus Foundation. He also left behind a lot of work that needs to be done! Last spring, we soon realized that it’s going to take ALL of us to do all of his jobs. It will take all the knowledge, skills, talents and experience of Mary Ann, his children and their spouses, his adult grandchildren and their spouses, and, so far, one great granddaughter, to carry on the work he loved so much, that made such a difference in the lives of so many people. We are being helped immeasurably by our loyal and trusted employees, especially longtime, key staff members whom we consider family: Anthony Wood at the ranch, and Gary Konert, Phylis Weisenfels and Tom Konert at the warehouse. Our entire McMahon Family has committed to TRY...and we’re seriously working on it!
The phrase “Move Forward” was David’s own directive to us, proving his faith in the future of our family and our business!
The genetic enhancements of Belle Point’s breeding program, and all the improvements you will see at the ranch were on Dave’s “to-do lists” in the last five years! Project by project, step by step, together, we are brainstorming IDEAS, researching and developing PLANS, and rolling up our sleeves to continue, with confidence, putting his dreams and desire for excellence into ACTION. “Moving Forward” is our tribute to him. We have accomplished quite a lot in the last eleven months. You will see progress in our livestock, our land, our facilities, our business and management practices, and increased active involvement of our family members. We’re certain that “Moving Forward” is actually a complex matrix of projects we will be working on for many years to come! Our “Fair and Square Guarantee” is one example of putting our family’s Core Value of Integrity into action. Guided by Rotary International’s Four-Way Test painted on the wall of our sale facility, we have embraced updating Belle Point’s longstanding satisfaction guarantee with a renewed focus: just as Dave was, we are deeply committed to ensuring our business dealings are “fair to all concerned.”
Thank you for being our friends!
We cherish your kind words, inspiring encouragement and powerful prayers. We welcome your “Dave Stories!” We appreciate your time, travel and effort to be with us this year, in person, on the phone or internet, or in spirit as you go about your day on March 25. We will always respect your trust in us, it is the foundation of our business. And, we will always treasure the friendship you bestow, as Dave would say, in true belief and magical wonderment, “All because of the Angus cow!”
BELLE POINT Fair and Square GUARANTEE
Because we value your business, Belle Point Ranch puts forth every effort to ensure the integrity of our cattle, our records and our management practices. Should an issue arise with your purchase we ask you to report it to us immediately. If more information is necessary, we will proceed together with a timely and thorough investigation that may involve consulting a licensed veterinarian. Once responsibility is determined, we pledge to address the situation promptly to arrive at an outcome that is fair and square! 46
In 1899, Pioneer Angus breeder P.J. “King Pat” Donahoe wrote, “I would sooner own a good animal bred by another man, than an inferior one bred by myself.”
We put valuable sires on our “payroll” and they get the job done, naturally! For many years we have made a significant financial investment in BULL POWER, and kept a commitment to use and prove our own bulls. Our
Top-of-the-Breed Pedigrees. herd sires are not considered by us to be “clean-up bulls,” tho’ they are used naturally, and very effectively, in a practical management system to produce calf crops that make money! Belle Point’s herd sires are featured on pages 2 through 6. You can SEE them and their progeny here on the True Beef Performance. ranch on March 25 when we present our annual offering. Soundness. Style. We also appreciate the POWER of AI SIRES – and we are using progressive bulls in our Moving Forward breeding program. You’ll see the “Best Pounds of Angus Quality. Brand Names in the Business” referenced on pages 6 and 7, and throughout the catalog...and you’ll profit from their influence in our feature lots! EPDs current as of 2/21/17. We are sad to report the death of this promising bull during one of the hottest periods of last summer. His true potential as a herd sire will not be realized, but his impact is evident in a few members of his 2017 calf crop offered as Lots 13A through 17A. Many thanks to Enix Farms and Pollard Farms for breeding and developing this exceptional individual. He was purchased at the 2016 National Western to help lead what was truly the beginning of our “moving forward” breeding program!

The only source of knowledge
is experience. ALBERT EINSTEIN, 1921 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS
We’ve been in this purebred cattle “game” a long time, and experience tells us it’s A-OK to do things a little differently than everyone else. YOU have the freedom to “do it differently” too! Our American Angus Association is unmatched in offering information, tools and programs that help each of us – in our own way – learn, compare, select and develop the individuals that will make an impact on our breeding program. It’s up to us to use this knowledge, coupled with our own experience, to manage our cattle and our resources in unique and practical ways that result in making money! Dare to be different...it’s “the new black.” First and foremost, we believe cows and bulls have to do their jobs. Do not underestimate the functional traits that factor in to real $uccess in the cattle business. Veteran AAA Regional Manager Waymon Ashley used to say, “Give me an EPD for shoulders, and then let’s start talkin’ about calving ease!” Yep, we believe you’ve still gotta go LOOK at ‘em to evaluate critical traits. The footnotes in this catalog are limited to reporting the calf at side and breeding information. We decided a long time ago to keep the “mumbo-jumbo” to a minimum to encourage the use of your IMAGINATION! Yes, consider numbers, facts, and opinions. Listen to the knowledge of experts about potential. Then, tap into your own experience to imagine the possibilities. Imagine what these individuals will do – differently – for YOU! Ben Eggers on SydGen Infinite 4617:
“Infinite is a true BEEF bull with exceptional muscle mass and the heritage to create exceptional daughters!” “Infinite proved his prowess by scanning an actual ribeye of 20.1 square inches at 368 days of age – a SydGen record! In his feeding group, he posted the Number 1 ADG of 4.26 lbs./day, and the Number 1 Adj. Yearling Weight of 1,051 lbs. A paternal brother to the current Number 1 $B sire on the Young Sire Summary, Infinite stems from the Everelda Entense family, long-known as strong progenitors of muscle in the Angus breed. His dam has long been the “picture cow” representing SydGen Liberty daughters in the ORIGen and ABS sire directories. She served as a SydGen Donor and recently sold for $25,000 as a mature cow.”
Service sire of Lots 1 thru 12

A Member of the Pollard Pen 2016 National Western Class Winner
We are sad to report the death of this promising bull during one of the hottest periods of last summer. His true potential as a herd sire will not be realized, but his impact is evident in a few members of his 2017 calf crop offered as Lots 13A through 17A. Many thanks to Enix Farms and Pollard Farms for breeding and developing this exceptional individual. He was purchased at the 2016 National Western to help lead what was truly the beginning of our “moving forward” breeding program! Pictured left, sire of Lots 13A thru 17A

DD Genetic Test In Progress
American Angus Association Developmental Duplication (DD) Fact Sheet www.angus.org/Management/Genetic Condition Policy Developmental Duplication (DD) is an abnormality recently found to be a simply inherited genetic condition passed through certain lines of Angus cattle. Animals affected with this condition can sometimes be born with an extra limb or part of an extra limb. An animal will be classified as a “Potential” carrier if an ancestor is a known carrier or known to be affected. If an animal is designated DDP, the only way to know for certain whether it is free or a carrier is to have it genetically tested. If the animal is DDF you can breed it with no fear of ever having an affected calf. If the animal is DDC or DDA, you’ll need to adopt a management strategy to avoid affected offspring and to deal with potential carriers entering your breeding herd.
(DDP) next to the name indicates a DD Potential female that has been submitted for genetic testing. Please see the Sale Day Update for test results. 10

Hey, look at this HARD WORKIN’ 2-Year-Old Georgina doing a GREAT JOB raising a STRAPPIN’ bull calf sired by Belle Point Herd Sire
X LOT 42 He sells!
Wisdom of Paul Hill, Champion Hill, on building a cow herd: “Build on maternal traits...that means focus on good udders, cows that are deep-bodied with spring of rib, angular front ends and the right presence. The Angus industry evolves from the cow. Genetics for marbling and growth are useless unless you have high maternal traits.”
His dam Sankeys Jilt 115
You’ll see Calibration at the sale! Stay tuned for the comeback of Belle Point’s BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL! Observations of his breeder, Chris Sankey:
Sankeys Calibration is the best bull the Sankey family has ever raised! He combines outstanding visual phenotype, a flawless pedigree with strong EPDs. He is a result of over 6o years and 10 generations of planned matings by the Laflin and Sankey families.

Calibration traces back to the foundation Jilt female purchased in 1956 by E.B. Laflin (Sharee Sankey’s Great Grandfather). He is backed by some of the most productive cows in the respected Laflin and Sankey herds. His mother is a Pathfinder dam with a weaning ratio of 113 on 4 calves, and a calving interval of 359 days. His grandmother has an impressive track record with a weaning ratio of 103 on 12 calves and a calving interval of 366 days. His grandmother will calve this spring with her 13th consecutive AI-sired calf. Fertility, longevity, and udder quality are just some of the outstanding traits portrayed in the maternal side of Calibration’s pedigree! Select Sires on SAC Conversation, sire of Calibration: “One of the most admired bulls of our lineup – he is wide-based, square-hipped and exhibits tremendous depth of body, with a wide top and bold rib shape. Offers an outcross pedigree...” 11

Maybe you’ve heard David McMahon say “It’s A People Business!” He first said it long ago...others have repeated it time after time because it’s so TRUE.
Meet the people behind the LCCC and FOF prefixes.... Little Cedar Cattle Co. in Beaverton, Michigan is home to a leading Shorthorn breeding program operated by Steve and Julie French, a daughter of David and Mary Ann McMahon. Since their marriage 15 years ago, they have also developed a powerful set of ANGUS females. Steve & Julie French Beaverton, Michigan www.littlecedarcattlecompany.com www.redwhiteandroan.com Steve: 989-798-8223 Julie: 989-965-6363
Steve is a broker of plastics raw materials, and an “on-the-job-everyday” cattle breeder. He’s a diligent student of the breeds, and a master at selecting, developing and mating cattle that WORK. Julie has an OSU Animal Science/Livestock Merchandising degree, and directs and implements promotional strategies for LCCC and BPR year-round, along with advising clients on promotional strategies. Steve and Julie are actively contributing to Belle Point’s “moving forward” effort. They’re studying the Hereford breed too with the goal of fulfilling Dave’s desire to develop an elite herd for Belle Point.
LCCC and South River Genetics are hosting the 2nd annual “Springtime Revival” on Sunday, April 9 at the SRG headquarters near Earlsboro, Oklahoma. It’s an opportunity for folks in this part of the U.S. to “get in on the front end” of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus, an old breed on a new path of Progre$$ and BEEF Performance! Visit www.redwhiteandroan.com to preview the sale offering assembled from the top Shorthorn breeding operations in the U.S.
Fred & Shirley Williams Van Buren, Arkansas Shirley: 479-651-8302 E-mail: williamsfairoaks@aol.com
For many years, the Belle Point sale has featured sale lots from the herd of our great friends and neighbors, Fred and Shirley Williams. Shirley is a past president of the American Angus Auxiliary and Fred’s advertising business keeps him movin’ and shakin’ and involved in pretty much everything around “River City.” Shirley is well known in these parts as a very good “cowman!” Her cow business philosophy is rooted in Fred’s steady reminder that the margin of profit on seedstock cattle can be pretty slim. She stays focused on con$tant production, and the carca$$ characteristics that ensure high quality BEEF! Over the years, Shirley has
been mentored by some of the breed’s greatest cowmen that she met right here at Belle Point. She listens, and thinks, and applies data to practical performance characteristics – udder quality, fertility and cow and calf condition at weaning. Good people, good cattle! 14

2-Year-Olds with big fall calves
Ruminate on what Shirley says about these young cows...
“In my experience, the hardest ones to get rebred are the First Calf Heifers. Here are 5 outstanding 2014 females with ready-to-wean fall calves. Remember that they are still growing and developing as mothers as they raise their first calves...that’s a big job for a young cow, and these are bred back to calve in fall to Journey and Exceed! Can’t ask any more of a female than that! If you’re interested in fertility, you’ll be interested in these 5!”

Welcome to Belle Point! Angus breeders always look forward to the early days of spring as the weather starts to warm up, flowers begin to bloom, grass turns green, calves are hitting the ground and the Belle Point Ranch Sale is just around the corner! For nearly four decades, the McMahon family has held their sale at this time, and what a great way to start the spring. The McMahon family are wonderful hosts and make you feel at home when you attend Belle Point. They are the best at combining good cattle with a good time! David McMahon was an astute businessman and a stockman with a keen eye for the “right one.” David loved the land, Angus cattle and Angus people. The McMahon family’s roots have always been in the Fort Smith area, and the goal of Belle Point Ranch was to offer Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen alike a place to find superior genetics for their herds. The annual Belle Point sale was the culmination of David’s efforts to offer local, state and national breeders Angus cattle that would add VALUE to their programs. The genetics each year at Belle Point were always a representation of the best of what the breed had to offer. David’s foresight was always “in tune” with the times, demonstrated by the nationally known herd sires that highlighted the Belle Point program during each era: Harrison, a record-seller who became one of the breed’s top show bulls; TC Stockman, a bull that added muscle, stoutness and eye appeal; GAR Commitment, a leader of maternal traits, low birth and predictability; Nichols Super Duty, who delivered power and strength. In 2002, David bought Rito 1I1, a bull that has transcended the limits of his generation in feed intake/efficiency and $B. (Read Jim Moore’s “lesson” on page 36.) In recent years, he saw the potential of Woodside, by Connealy Consensus out of the famous Rita 5F56. The genetic contribution of all these bulls enhanced the Belle Point herd, and offered local and regional breeders advanced genetics that may not otherwise have been accessible. The future is now, and the Belle Point program continues with the enthusiasm and ideas of McMahon family members working together continuing the implementation of David’s vision with the same integrity and intensity. In the last year Belle Point’s genetic base has expanded deeper and wider, and they’ll share their progress in this sale! It is clear that Mary Ann and the entire McMahon family is “Moving Forward,” continuing the Belle Point Ranch traditions established over these many years! We look forward to seeing you at Belle Point on March 25, 2017. You’ll enjoy McMahon hospitality and find good Angus cattle with plenty of value. If we can be of service in any way, please feel free to give us a call. Larry Cotton 517-294-0777

The use of certain common antibiotics historically used in feed and water for production purposes (such as growth promotion and feed efficiency) will no longer be an option for that intended purpose. While those antibiotics will still remain available, they will only be used for therapeutic (healing) purposes under the supervision of licensed veterinarians.

The new VFD ruling is yet another example of our changing times. It is not the first change that has impacted the cattle industry, and will not be the last! It is important to educate yourself and be prepared for all regulations that affect your cattle business. Contact me by phone: 405-246-6631 or e-mail: sclifton@southrivergenetics.com if you have questions about the VFD. I’ll be glad to share what I know to help you address the changes.
FUTURE means these are YOUNG bulls! They need to be cared for and developed by YOU with FEED, access to clean water and shade and fly control. Let them fully develop before turning them in with cows. Invest time and $$$ in the care of your bull, and he’ll get the job done for you! 21

These 3 young sires were chosen from TOP breeding programs. Sale bulls are displayed and shown at Denver, so they are easily handled. Good disposition is a VALUE trait. Speaking of value, read this excerpt from the sale report...
National Western Angus Bull Sale a ‘Smash Hit’
All-new evening event attracts nearly 2,500 to celebrate Angus in the West.
...The ringmen called out bids while the bulls were displayed on a large video screen, providing the perfect view from all sides of the arena. More than 300 active buyers were registered on-site, and many more participated online through LiveAuctions.TV. Behind the sale arena, the Angus bulls were on display and available for buyers to evaluate before entering the ring. At the final gavel drop, 45 lots averaged $6,805 per head. The sale grossed $306,250. “The real value, the real endorsement of our breed is the participation you have from commercial cattlemen who attend each year and support this sale,” Sale Manager David Gazda said. “It’s showing us that Angus cattle do work. There is a demand for them. We are producing a product that commercial cattlemen can merchandise, and merchandise for a profit.”
Remember, these are YOUNG bulls! They will serve you well if you care for them as you would any other ASSET of your business! Sure, they were shown in Denver, but they must continue to be developed by YOU with FEED, access to clean water and shade and fly control. Let them fully develop before turning them in with cows. Invest time and $$$ in the care of your bull, and he’ll get the job done for you!
We bought this good Brilliance son, bred by Teixeira Cattle Co., in the 2016 National Western Bull Sale to use as our Calving Ease sire last spring. You can see a couple of his calves in the sale! We like ‘em, they sure ‘nuf came easy and they’re stout and vigorous. TEX Brilliance 5040 got the job done for us and he will work well for you!

Cody Jensen and Lynn Ewald (FAF) breed functional, sound and stylish bulls and females, year after year. Experience with the breeders and their ideals tells us there’s true VALUE in this young bull! Produced by a daughter of Net Worth, Double Black 603 will do the work on plenty of pedigrees – and he’ll add “snap” to what you SEE!
Select Sires on Lot 43’s sire Double Black: “Double Black is linebred for tremendous phenotype. His dam is a well-known BAR Ext daughter who has consistently produced great ones. Flawless in his design – from nose to tail, he is impressive!”
Gotta say, we first spotted a different Quam bull – the Black Granite son who was TOP SELLER of the 2017 National Western Bull Sale, commanding $24,000 from a group from Montana and Colorado. We figured he would be a little “too rich” to bring back for our Denver Bulls feature...and we were right! Congratulations to Terry and Cody Quam on what we call “winning the sale!” That’s what it’s all about.

Four Steps to Living with Integrity
Kevin A. Thompson is Lead Pastor of Community Bible Church, a multi-site church in the Greater Fort Smith Region. He’s also a husband, father, speaker and the writer of a perceptive blog we follow. Kevin’s post of February 16 “fairly and squarely” addresses the Belle Point Guarantee!
In a society that honors power, money, fame, and success, there is a desired quality which is often overlooked – integrity. If I had to pick one thing for my children to have, ranking higher than health or wealth would be the presence of character in their lives. While an absence of integrity has always been present, we may have never experienced a time in which the concept of character is so overlooked or downplayed. We have grown to expect corruption, deceit, and dishonesty from politicians, co-workers, companies, institutions, churches, spouses, and friends. Pessimism and cynicism so defines us that we aren’t even convinced integrity is possible any more. It is. On a regular basis I interact with people of amazing character. It doesn’t mean they are perfect. It doesn’t mean there aren’t times in which I’m surprised or disappointed by a poor choice of someone I admire. It does mean people regularly make hard choices, do noble things, and show an internal strength which many others assume doesn’t exist. The problem with society’s present view of character is that because we no longer believe it is possible, we do not teach it to our children. We don’t train character. We don’t demand integrity. We don’t model how to have a strong reputation. In this failure of parents, churches, schools, and society, we create a self-fulfilling prophecy. We assume good character can’t happen so we fail to create integrity in ourselves and our children. Thankfully, our assumptions are wrong. Strong character still exists. It can be taught and learned. And we aren’t being hypocrites in demanding it from our leaders and others just because we are not always perfect. As a matter of fact, integrity is not perfection. In some ways, it has more to do with how to deal with our imperfections.

4 Signs of Integrity
1. Say no when you mean no. I don’t know anyone who wants to live with integrity who believes lying is acceptable. However, I know many people who want to have character who regularly lie. They say “yes” when they mean “no.” They stay quiet and give the appearance of consent, when they actually disagree. They don’t say “no” with their mouths, but they do so with their actions by failing to do what they have agreed to do. Integrity means truth. If you mean no, say no. When you fail to do so, it’s a failure of integrity. 2. Do what you say. Integrity means being complete. When something has integrity, it has no divide. The most common way a lack of integrity is revealed is when our words do not match our actions, like when we say one thing, but do something else. If we are seeking to have a strong character, it begins by matching words with actions. When a person consistently does what he says, he proves to everyone around him that he is whole…without divide. 3. Respect people’s time and decisions. An often overlooked aspect of integrity encompasses how we interact with others. If having integrity is being a complete entity, not only must one not have internal divides, but they must also have a clear distinction between themselves and others. Whenever we fail to respect another person, we are showing an absence of strong character. Without control, manipulation, or co-dependency, a person of integrity will understand what decisions are theirs to make and what decisions are under the control of others. 4. Admit mistakes. Integrity has less to do with perfection and far more to do with how we handle imperfection – both ours and others. No one is perfect. Because of this imperfection, we should expect personal failures. When they occur, a person of principle is quick to recognize them, admit them, and correct them. Integrity is often displayed by sincere apologies, true remorse, and a concerted effort to correct a wrong. A person who lacks integrity downplays their faults, denies their failures, and dismisses the frustrations of others. When someone has strong character, it often displays itself in how quick they are to admit failure and attempt to make it right. Being a person of strong character is made up of more than just these four things, but they are a good start. Bad character can be hidden for a time. We can deceive ourselves and others, but make no mistake, an absence of integrity will eventually reveal itself. When it does, the consequences can be overwhelming. But few things are as stabilizing – to a community, family, business, organization, or country – like a person of strong character. Imagine if I gave you a choice of who your child could marry. One person was rich, famous, powerful, and outwardly very successful. The other was poor, unknown, and had little influence. But the first person had no character, and the second person was someone of tremendous character. Whom would you want your child to marry? Without question, I would choose the person of integrity. As we desire for our children, so we should be ourselves. Character matters.

Moving Forward by looking back.
Belle Point Ranch Herd Sire
A Real World Lesson on Feed Intake and Efficiency
Shared by Commercial Angus Breeder Jim Moore, Moore Cattle Company, Charleston, Arkansas When we started feeding cattle in Kansas twenty years ago, we learned very quickly if the cattle won’t gain and convert feed, they won’t make any money. RADG and DMI are two EPD traits we feel are very important, not only in the feedlot, but also in the breeding program on our ranch. This past year, our steers gained 4.1 lbs/day and converted at 5.5 lbs/lb of gain at 190 days on feed. These numbers are similar to what we have done for the past 15 years, though we are feeding cattle an extra 50 to 60 days longer than we used to. Stampede Feeders Yard Manager Jerry Jackson called it “dumb luck.” His comment prompted me to research what had made our cattle efficient. I looked at the bulls we used in the past, and studied their EPDs. One bull stood out: Rito 1I1. We bred commercial Angus cows to him AI, and also had five of his sons working on our ranch at one time. When my research showed that all the sons of 1I1 we used had good RADG and DMI EPDs, I concluded that the influence of Rito 1I1 is the origin of Moore Cattle Co.’s “dumb luck” in feeding efficiency! Rito 1I1 has stood the test of time in terms of his RADG, DMI, CW, Fat, $F, $G, and $B. Although the bull was born 16 years ago, he still ranks at the top of the breed for these traits. It isn’t very often that you see a bull that has a high RADG (Top 1%) but a low DMI (Top 10%). This is a great combination if you’re thinking about efficiency!
Offering Two Packages of Rito 1I1 Semen Rito 1I1 of 2536 Rito 6I6 10 units of Rito 1I1
64A 64B
Rito 1I1 sired one of the great cows of the Angus breed, DRMCTR 1i1 Rita 6108. Her EPDs and her daughters’ EPDs exhibit the efficiency impact Rito 1I1 has made on the breed. When you study Rita 6108, it is easy to see why she, in my opinion, is one of the true power cows in the breed. Her daughters, granddaughters, and grandsons have commanded top dollar whenever and wherever they have sold. I believe a lot of this power comes from Rito 1I1. Thick, deep, with lots of spring of rib, he was a true cowman’s bull. We have always been more concerned about the shape of the bull, than what his BW EPD is. 1I1 and the sons that we bought and used were smooth shouldered and we had no trouble calving their calves. Although his Milk EPD may be too low for some, we still have daughters and granddaughters that produce big stout calves every year. David McMahon once told me that the Angus business is as much about the people as it is about the cattle. When we started Genemax testing five years ago, I never could have imagined the path that it would lead us down, or the people I would get to meet and call my friends and advisors: Mark McCully, Justin Sexten, Paul Dykstra, Kent Anderson, Dan Moser, Kelli Retallick. This past year, our cattle hit 87% CAB and Prime. We couldn’t have done it without the help of the GeneMax tools and these people. They are truly experts in their field, and also great people!

The Rito 1I1 semen that Belle Point is offering is an opportunity to create the next Rita 6108, a cow that has depth, spring of rib, capacity, and an outstanding EPD profile. I would mate 1I1 to cows that are made like 1I1 – the easy-doing kind. Cattle that will gain and convert. Pay attention to birth weight, milk and carcass traits, and you may create the next “true power cow” of the Angus breed! Meet the people behind the SUBI & ABBEY prefixes... Craig Layes - Farm Manager Office Phone: 479-934-4567 Craig’s Cell: 479-438-4876 E-Mail: craig72865@yahoo.com VISIT SUBIACO ABBEY AT www.countrymonks.org
In 1877, land in the western Arkansas River Valley was offered by the railroad to establish a Benedictine monastery to minister to German-Catholic settlers. Today, the Abbey is a community of forty Benedictine monks who serve God in work and prayer. The monks of Subiaco Abbey operate a farm, a vineyard and garden, a college preparatory school for boys and a retreat center.
Craig Layes
The Subiaco herd is influenced by leading AI Sires of the Angus breed
Their work also includes service to local parishes, a sawmill and carpentry shop, maintenance of the grounds and pursuits in the creative arts and canning. The fields, forests and rolling hills of Subiaco offer a serene and spiritual atmosphere that is hospitably shared with any who choose to visit.
Select Sires on GAR Sunrise: “A proven carcass improver – he’s over 1.0 for both MARB and REA! He sires females that exel in any environment – big ribbed with super udder design. Proven calving ease, high growth and powerful end-product merit in one special bull.”
For more than a hundred years monks have plowed fields and tended chickens and cows. Subiaco grew cash crops and operated a dairy until 1964, when the transition was made to raising beef cattle. In the late 1990s, the decision to shift to registered Angus was well-considered and timely. Donations of registered cattle by several prominent Angus breeders, Gardiner Angus Ranch, Ankony, Circle A Ranch, Summitcrest and Belle Point Ranch, were instrumental to upgrading the farm’s cattle stock to Angus to ensure greater acceptance and profitability. Seventeen years after committing to Angus, the goal to be a prime supplier of Angus genetics in the region is being realized.
GAR Sunrise (AAA#+16933958) ORIgen on VAR Generation 2100: “A high accuracy, multi-trait excellence sire – top 10% or better for WW, YW, Doc, HP, Milk, Marb, RE, $W, $F, $G, $QG and $B. 2100 progeny are sale-toppers coast to coast, and 60 sons have averaged $11,300, selling to both purebred and commercial breeders.”
VAR Generation 2100 (AAA# 17171587)
Subiaco is a Catholic Benedictine monastery located just about 30 miles from Belle Point. We have all been friends for a very long time! As you’ve read, the Abbey has always been in the livestock business. When they decided to develop a purebred Angus herd 17 years ago, we asked breeders from all over the U.S. to help by donating foundation females. Henry and Nan Gardiner of Ashland, KS, truly lead the way. GAR’s generosity in helping Subiaco get started with progressive Angus genetics and advice will always be greatly appreciated! 37

Fast Pay Makes Fast Friends
By Mark Vittert, published in 1981. Reprinted in the 1989 Belle Point catalog, and we’re asked about it all the time!
The stakes of the poker game were getting pretty high. There was more than $100 in the pot and unfortunately my cards were pretty good. I had to play the hand out. It was 3 a.m. and we’d been at the table for seven hours. I kept meeting the raises, the pot kept growing and all I remember is that the Captain’s cards beat mine—flush over straight. That hand ended the game and we all settled up. Except me. I owed the Captain $400 and, never thinking of losing that much, I didn’t have it with me. I told the Captain that I’d send him a check. He said fine but he also added: “Mark, just remember that fast pay makes fast friends.” We’ve all heard different versions of the old joke, “the three biggest lies.” The joke always begins with the first lie being, “the check is in the mail.” There is something special about someone who always follows through on what he promises. Not just that they actually do what they say but rather that they do it when they say they will and that it’s done with class. How many people in business do you know that you confidently could count to follow through on time? The lawyer says the papers will be done on Wednesday. Your big customer says that headquarters wants your payment held up for just another week. The head of personnel says he’ll call you on Tuesday about the new job. Well, we all know those who do just what they say are rare indeed. It’s so rare, that whenever people do follow through on time I’m really pleasantly surprised and appreciative. Even if the news is bad, I feel positive toward the caller if it was done on time. Stringing people out is a bad habit. Generally, people who reach the top have learned to follow through quickly. As Tom Curtis once told me: “A congressman learns to make as few commitments as possible but when a promise is made, then you must follow through at all costs and promptly.” The place most people fall down is in the category of money. I’ve found that if you pay quickly, most other obligations will appear to be easily met. “Fast pay” will make you feel better. After you write the check you can forget about the debt. And “fast pay” also keeps the other person from spending those waiting days thinking about your faults. Also, you become the kind of person people want to work with again. I called the Captain on a Wednesday in February and asked if he would like to invest $100,000 to $150,000 in a project I was putting together. He said: “Yeah, it sounds good. I’ll put the check in the mail right now. Got to go now. Thanks.” Two days later on Friday, I received this crumpled little note in the mail. “Mark: Enclosed is check for $100 grand. I’ll play you bumper pool for the other 50 grand. Good luck, Captain.” I suppose this is an example of a man who practices what he believes in.

UPDATED GENERAL INFO
Full mortality insurance has been obtained by Belle Point Ranch on all eligible cattle selling on March 25, 2017. Coverage in the amount of the purchase price is effective at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, for a term of 30 days from the day of the sale or until cattle arrive at their destination, whichever is shorter. Calves selling at side of dam will be insured for 25 percent of the purchase price of the lot.
PREVIEW THE SALE LOTS
Cattle are available for your inspection at the ranch any time at your convenience. We will appreciate one day’s notice if you want to come before Thursday, March 23...please give us a call!
All lots insured with Jerry Gay Insurance Co., American Live Stock, Geneva, Illinois. Representatives will be in attendance at the sale to assist you with any additional insurance needs. Calves under two weeks of age are ineligible for this insurance coverage. However, they are still fully guaranteed by Belle Point Ranch.
SALE ORDER – Just follow the lot numbers!
The cattle will sell in catalog order starting with Lot 1! Ear tags on the cattle will correspond to the lot numbers in this catalog. Ear tags on calves at side of dam will correspond to dam’s number. Footnotes in this catalog have been reduced to the breeding status of the cattle selling, with some exceptions.
WANT TO CHANGE A NAME?
EPDs, Interim & Sire/Dam
You may change the name of ANY ANIMAL BELLE POINT HAS NAMED. Please inform the clerk at the time of settlement that you wish to change the name. We will provide our written permission and mail it to you with your transferred certificate. You must pay the $25 fee and mail the original registration certificate and name change permission to the American Angus Association.
Catalog EPDs are current as of 2/21/17. EPDs may change weekly, view updates at www.angus.org. When an individual EPD is not available, using an Interim EPD (I) or sire and dam EPDs is the “next best thing.” There’s nothing “wrong” with an animal with Interim EPDs or without EPDs of their own. Belle Point provides the actual EPDs of sire and dam when no individual EPDs are available so you may make your own assumptions of the future potential of that sale lot.
Under AAA rules, we cannot grant permission to change the name of an animal that was NOT NAMED by Belle Point Ranch. We are happy to inform you who named the animal, but we cannot guarantee that permission will be granted by them. You will have to ask them!
AFTER SALE CARE & SHIPPING
Sale cattle will be accompanied with proper health certificates for immediate shipment. Truckers believed to be reliable will be available to assist you in making shipping arrangements. We will certainly do our part to help make your shipping arrangements happen! We are no longer able to provide delivery free of charge. Belle Point Ranch will care for each lot in the sale for a reasonable amount of time. Please discuss your needs with us prior to the sale, and be sure your plans are noted at the settlement desk.
BREEDING & PREGNANCY CHECKING
Females in this sale have not been bred to or exposed to any bulls other than the ones listed in the footnote. Bred cows were pregnancy checked by ultrasound and/or palpation: Fair Oaks on 1/17 and 2/7, Belle Point on 2/17 and 3/17, and Subiaco on 3/17. Pregnancy status as of sale day will be confirmed on the Update Sheet. If cows determined to be open are offered in the auction, we will not keep them and get them re-bred.
NEW! BRED FEMALES “60 DAY” POLICY BREEDING PRIVILEGES SEMEN RIGHTS
After the sale, buyers must take on the responsibility of closely monitoring bred females on their farms for the first 60 days to be certain “safe” status continues. Belle Point Ranch will offer a “Fair and Square” adustment to the sale price if a cow is determined by a licensed veterinarian to be “open” within 60 days of the sale.
Breeding privileges from featured Belle Point herd sires may be offered on SELECTED FEMALES selling in this sale. Semen from the Belle Point herd sire battery that is available at the ranch may be picked up sale day. Cost of shipped semen is your responsibility. Save expensive shipping costs by bringing your tank to the sale.
Belle Point Ranch and each of our our sale partners retain the right to obtain 100 straws of semen per year at the cost of production on any bull sold in this sale, born or unborn. A.I. certificates at American Angus Assn. cost.
