Our fifteen year old pathfinder cow out of Shadow and a cow family at NBar that goes back to the thirties...has Ext and SAV Density daughters in our heifer pens....her natural born Density son currently at IBEP...bred back first service to Leachman Right Time

An own daughter of Rito 707 out of a teenage Ext daughter that produced many daughters in the Sinclair herd. Beauty herself was the National Angus Foundation Scholarship heifer in Denver where Kiamichi Link Ranch paid $75,000 for the privilege of owning her and their donation to scholarships for Angus juniors. KLR successfully flushed her and we purchased her in their fall sale. She has a fancy January War Party bull calf at side. She and her dam have been fabulous embryo producers and both have had high selling offspring. We are excited to have the chance to work with her here at NicKatie!

Breeding stock for sale anytime. we appreciate our many spring buyers and look forward to following their progress in new herds. A highlight of our short Angus history occurred in February with an Angus Journal article about John and in March with a herd visit from AAA CEO Bryce Schumann! We are proud active members of the Southern Indiana Angus Association. Visitors welcome any time and we appreciate the opportunity to welcome juniors and their families from all over the US at Indy in July! Feel free to stop by, rest your animals or yourselves....let us know ahead and we might just have a warm piece of pie waiting for you!

I

NDIANA

Once again the Southern Indiana Angus Association had a busy and successful year. 2013 started as usual with the Sale Committee working hard lining up lots for the Spring Sale. Andy Howell and Karl Gillette took a tour of as many potential lots as they could in January, and based on the results on April 6th at the sale, they were successful. The 2013 Spring Sale was held at the United Producers facility in Little York. During the sale the SIAA gives out 5 awards. The Consignors Choice awards have 4 categories. Cow/Calf, Bred Female, Bull, and Open Heifer. The Cow/Calf Champion this year went to Jackson Angus Farm of Hope. The Champion Bred Female went to Double O Angus of Bedford. The Champion Bull went to GHG Angus of Cloverdale, and the Champion Open Heifer went to Small Acres Farm of Loogootee. The Dickie Isaacs Breeder of the Year Award is also presented during the sale, and this year’s winner was Roger Eckstein of Seymour. The SIAA continues to have a very good and diverse slate of speakers at the monthly meetings. These meetings are held from October through April. This year the meetings have been moved to The Pines restaurant in Seymour. Dave Redman, Lawrence County Extension Agent was the speaker in January. In February we had our annual Sire Symposium with representatives from 5 different A.I. companies. The March meeting is our annual Guest Night, and the speakers were the leaders of the National FFA Office in Indianapolis. Charlie Boyd was the speaker for the May meeting. In October Brad Shelton from the Purdue Feldun Farm in Bedford spoke to the group. In November Dr. Tom Kuhn of Shelbyville spoke about A.I., Embryo Transfer and Genomics. The year ended with Jerry Cassady, Regional Manager of the American Angus Association. The March meeting speakers were Maggie Jasper, National Junior Board Member, and Bryce Schumann, CEO of AAA. Also at the March meeting we had the presentation from Joe Cockshell from Monsanto, to the Indiana Juniors a $2,500 donation check to the Indiana Junior Angus Association, as part of America’s Farmers Grow Communities. To wrap up the year our April speaker was Dr. Larry Horstman, Purdue University, veterinary professor. The next event the SIAA hosts is the Hoosier Classic Show in Brownstown. This years show had 37 entries. Grand Champion Heifer went to Kory Kovert of Crothersville. Kory’s heifer was also the Junior Champion. Reserve Grand Champion Heifer and Reserve Junior Champion went to Karsyn Zenor of Williamsport. Grand Champion Bull went to Carrie Wiley of Marysville and Thompson Family Angus of Columbus had the Reserve Grand Champion Bull. The Grand Champion Cow/Calf pair went to Katelyn Wilson of Orleans. Jordyn Wickard had the Grand Champion Angus Steer. The SIAA also has a Supreme Angus of the show. Kory Kovert’s Grand Champion Heifer won Supreme. The association’s officers this year are John Finke, President; Ralph Meyer, Vice-President; Mark Thompson, Treasurer; and Michael Isaacs, Secretary. The 3 Director’s to the State Board are Mark Thompson, Troy Thompson, and Andrew Stewart. Sadly the SIAA lost 2 members this year. Garry Ritz of Seymour passed away in March, and Mike Hamilton of Heltonville passed away late this summer. They will be sorely missed. Looking forward to 2014. After a one-year absence, the Association’s Fall Picnic will return with Gary and Cathy Wente of Seymour hosting. The Spring Sale preparations are already in full swing, and the Hoosier Classic Show will be held again this summer. A great big thank you to all of the members of the SIAA for all of their work and support.

AAA BOARD OF

DIRECTORS

Message from Phil Howell, Board Member American Angus Association It seems like not so long ago that 2014 and the National Junior Angus Show at Indianapolis was far into the future. Now it is here. Indiana Angus enthusiasts look forward to the opportunity to host this great event. Each of us should seize the opportunity to meet great Angus people from all over the country and to learn more about our fellow Angus family members by working with them to achieve a common goal. This is a great time to be in the beef business and a greater time to be in the Angus business. Cattlemen have begun to rebuild the nation’s cow herd. The demand for Angus genetics is unprecedented and sale prices reflect that situation. Surveys of commercial producers indicate that the demand for Angus bulls is strong. The American Angus Association database is identifying cattle with the ability to economically produce quality beef. Whether breeding, buying or selling, the true value of an animal or group can be predicted with increasing accuracy. The array of tools available to predict genetic merit has grown significantly. There will be new faces and new talent sets working for the American Angus Association. We will continue to work with our mission statement in mind: To provide programs, services, technology and leadership to enhance the genetics of the Angus breed, broaden its influence within the beef industry, and expand the market for superior tasting, high-quality Angus beef worldwide. The 2014 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show will be in Kansas City, Missouri November 4-6, 2014. There will be opportunities to attend educational seminars, conduct Association business, listen to top-notch speakers, and make connections at the conference. The annual meeting of the American Angus Association and the election of five members to the Board of Directors will take place at this meeting instead of in Louisville.

President’s Message Jason Miller Fellow Indiana Angus Members and Breeders: I first want to express how honored and humbled I feel to be given the privilege to serve as the President of the Indiana Angus Association for 2014. Both our state and our association have a rich history within the Angus breed and a reputation around the country that is second to none. This year we have the opportunity to add to that history when we host the 2014 National Junior Angus Show. My hat is off to all of the people within our organization who are donating their time and talents to make this year’s NJAS possible. In addition to hosting an outstanding NJAS, I hope that we can continue all of the positive momentum that has been building within our organization over the last several years. In 2013 we adopted a mission statement; “The mission of the Indiana Angus Association is to support the individuals and groups who provide Angus cattle and Angus products in our state. To this end, we provide education, marketing, youth development, and social opportunities to ensure its’ sustainability.” It is my hope that this statement will be in the forefront of each board member’s mind as we make decisions that impact the direction of the association for 2014 and beyond, and it is also my hope that our association sponsored activities and events will embody the spirit of our mission statement. As the world becomes more “mobile” and more “paperless” we have worked to evolve the marketing and communication strategies of our association. Our website received a new look in 2013. I hope you take time to visit www.indianaangus.com to view the new format and to stay up to date on the developments of the 2014 NJAS. You can also find the contact information for each of your executive board members on the website, and if there are any Indiana Angus Association related topics that you would like to address with me or any other members of the executive board, I encourage you to call us and let us know your thoughts. We also created a Facebook page, so remember that you can “like” Indiana Angus on Facebook to stay updated as well. It’s clear that 2014 is going to be a year of opportunity for our association and its members. As such, I think it’s important that we take advantage of the excitement around Angus cattle in our state this year and recruit some new members into the fold. At the Hoosier Beef Congress in December there were more than 120 head of Angus heifers and more than 30 head of Angus steers exhibited. My guess is that within these impressive numbers, there are juniors who don’t always show Angus cattle that chose to do so this year as a result of the NJAS coming to Indy in 2014. That hopefully means that we will see several new families at all of our Indiana Angus events over the coming year. I would simply encourage you to take time to get to know the new faces that you see at our events this year and encourage them to get involved in more of the events that we offer. This sounds like a minor thing to be thinking about, but it could mean the difference between a one-time Angus show participant and a life-time contributor to our breed.

We were pleased to get the following feedback from Brent Ferree of Southern Indiana:

“I recently weaned the calves from the bull we purchased from you and am happy to report that the calves from your bull weighed #50 heavier at weaning than the other angus sired groups. We are calving out the first heifers from him and calves are coming light with lots of vigor”. With todays prices this amounts to a $100 per head advantage at weaning on calves by our bull. We invite you to stop for a visit and see if we can assist you with your bottom line.

From left to right: President- Sarah Innis, Vice President- Kade Patton, Secretary- Katie Brock, Maddi Butler out going president, Membership Director- Rachel Sutherland Not pictured are Treasure- Haylee Cooper, Reporter- Jordyn Wickard, Communications Director- Kallie Knott The Indiana Junior Angus Association annual meeting was held December 14, 2013, in Greenfield, Indiana at the Elanco World Headquarters. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. First on the agenda was the secretary’s report given by secretary Sarah Innis. The report was approved by a motion made by Samantha Seward and was seconded by Carrie Wiley. Next was the treasurer’s report given by Susan Cooper as treasurer Haylee Cooper was not able to attend. The report was approved by a motion made by Andy Brock and seconded by Samantha Seward. Discussion of the Indiana Angus Preview Show was next, starting with suggestions for possible activities to do while at the show. Some suggestions were: • Cow pie bingo • Fitting competition • Stock Show U showmanship and fitting clinic Judge selection for the junior show was next, and suggestions were taken. The options were: • Matt Claeys • Dean Johnson • Kyle Gillooly • Doug Parrot • Tom Farrer • Barry Wesner • Cody Lauderman • Dan Hoge • Bill Doig A vote was taken, and Matt Clayes was the first choice, followed by Dan Hoge, and a tie for third between Bill Doig and Kyle Gillooly. A motion to close the voting was made by Samantha Seward and seconded by Grace Shraeder. Kade Patton and Brooke Langley were delegated to serve on the 2014 NJAS judge selection committee. Logan Koehne made the motion to close nominations and Nick Innis seconded. It was also announced that the Wiley family received a $2500 grant from Monsanto that they had decided to give to the IJAA to help with NJAS expenses. Additionally, in memory of DeWayne Coston, the Coston family gave the IJAA a check for $900 with $200 of that total going towards a class sponsorship and the remaining $700 to go towards covering costs. As of the December meeting, only twelve class sponsorships had been confirmed, and the Juniors were asked to take this activity seriously because the money gained would be instrumental in covering expenses necessary to put the show on. The juniors were reminded to send thank-yous to the farms/people that had pledged. An incentive of $100 was offered to the junior that sells the most sponsorships. Next on the agenda was the discussion about the Jr. National T-shirts. For the members of the IJAA and other Indiana members, special fluorescent orange shirts were designated. By majority vote, it was decided that the shirts for opening ceremonies would be the same as the promotional shirts used in Kansas City at the 2013 NJAS. The juniors were reminded to sign up for contests that will take place at the NJAS, and sign-up sheets were available. Jamie Lowes spoke about the street fair that is scheduled to happen at the 2014 NJAS. She had requested a quote for possible activities to put out at the street fair including the following: • Hamster Ball • Mechanical Bull • Dunk Tank • Fast-Pitch Baseball • Bounce House • Basketball Machines • Two-person slide • High-striker • Sno-cones • Face-painting • Duck Pond • Velro Wall • Sumo-wrestling suits • Inflatable Jousting It was also suggested that a possible concert from the Knebels was possible. Jamie also asked for volunteers to help run sign-ups and games at the street fair. Julia Wickard discussed plans for opening ceremonies and the entertainment that would take place. She suggested that we have the Peterson Brothers create a song for the 2014 NJAS. The Indy Stompers are also available to serve as an entertainment source. Courtney Hill-Dukehart Cates addressed the juniors about the steer program and the availability of scholarships. She encouraged any high-school senior to be sure and complete the scholarship applications available. Before the meeting came to a close, Jaclyn Upperman, who is taking the place of Robin Ruff, answered any questions the juniors had about the NJAS, reiterated Courtney’s request about scholarships, and reminded the juniors about applying for the Bronze and Silver awards. The meeting was adjourned at noon. Sarah Innis, Secretary
