DEDICATION If you’re fortunate enough to come across a copy of the 1971 Michigan Angus Directory, you will find the highlights of the 1970 Michigan Angus Field Day hosted by Shagbark Farm. This event was a highlight and joy for Dick Crissman, who simply loved to see other people enjoy their time on his farm. While he may have worked a little extra to prepare for this big event by painting barns until 2AM, he was never one to be shy of extra work. His drive and enthusiasm for Angus cattle and the people he affected will be remembered for generations.

Shagbark Farm began in 1952 with the purchase of 40 acres. 120 acres were added in 1956 and later three other purchases brought the total farm acreage to 555. Over the years they ran as many as 125 brood cows, but normally averaged between 50-60 head. At times they also ran up to 100 ewes and briefly added swine to the operation. Richard Crissman, known by most as Dick was an original! An ‘out of the box ‘ thinker who is remembered for his tireless work on many projects for the West Michigan Angus Breeders Association. Dick served as the secretary for the West Michigan Association for over 50 years from 1960-2010. In 1973, Dick was the driving force behind the promotion and sale of the Centennial Angus Belt Buckles. With Dick’s leadership and efforts, the belts and belt buckles generated enough funding to help cover some of the building costs for the West Michigan Centennial Bull Test Station. The bull test

Dick and Charley Crissman promote sale of Centennial Angus belts and buckles.

DEDICATION was located in southeast Kent County on the corner of Whitneyville Rd and 84th Street. The bull test was operated by a board of directors made up of several breed representatives. With the help of Harlan Ritchie and Amos Fox from Michigan State University on rations and management, the bull test operated and hosted numerous sales for the West Michigan Angus Association. The bull test operated from 1973-1984 and continued to house bulls up until 2017. Dick & John Crissman, and Amos Fox at the West Dick was a general surgeon with a family Michigan Centennial Bull Test Station 1983. practice and enjoyed mixing human medicine with animal science. Stories are told of times he experimented by giving birth control pills to sheep and collaborating with the local veterinary to repair a calf that was born without the end of the digestive track.Together with the veterinarian they set out to operate and re-construct the all important ‘anus’ the calf was missing.

A strong believer in education and lover of knowledge, Dick was an early adopter of using performance data within his herd. He worked closely with his friend, Amos Fox, to become an early participant in the Michigan Beef Cattle Performance Testing Program. Dick was also forward thinking and one of the Angus breeders who had the foresight to see the benefit of an organization just for the juniors. While records state the Michigan Junior Angus Association was officially organized at the 1966 Michigan Angus Field Day, some say the idea for the junior association was born in Dick’s living room. He served as one of the first adult advisors and had three of his five children, Jim, Sue and Katie, serve on the first board of directors. Known by family and friends as a man who was often risqué, but simply hilarious he also enjoyed music and played the tuba in the Scottsville Clown Band for over 25 years. An example of his wit and humor was printed in the 1974 Michigan Angus Directory. Along with noting their current herd sires, Dick include this note: “Charles, John, Bob, and Molly continue to be the main labor force but their efforts pale in significance when compared to the fame achieved by our beloved wife and mother,Trish, who won the womens division of the cattle judging contest at our association field day this year. Why not stop by and let her give you a guided tour?”

How many of you still have one of these buckles?

He loved Angus cattle and the opportunity to meet other cattle breeders. He enjoyed traveling and attended the World Angus Forum’s in both Scotland and South Africa. Dick passed away in December 2016 but will always be remembered for his love of life, friends and Angus cattle. www.michiganangus.org

MICHIGAN ANGUS AUXILIARY

Michigan Angus Auxiliary During the past 50 years, the purpose of the Michigan Angus Auxiliary has never changed. We continue to assist Michigan Angus Breeders and our Angus youth in educational and promotional activities, sponsor the Miss Michigan Angus Contest, provide scholarships for graduating seniors, assist with the annual banquet and Preview Show, provide hospitality for various activities, sponsor the junior showmanship contest at the Preview Show, award certificates of achievement to outstanding juniors, as well as support the American Angus Auxiliary programs and activities. In 2015 the Auxiliary did not receive any scholarship applications. In 2016 Kollin Johnson of Quincy, Michigan, was awarded the Michigan Auxiliary Scholarship at the Michigan Angus Preview Show at MSU. Kollin went on to receive the 2nd place boys scholarship from the American Angus Auxiliary. Each year, we are excited to award American Angus Auxiliary Certificates of Achievement to outstanding Michigan juniors who have achieved major accomplishments at the state, regional, and national levels. The certificates are presented at our annual awards banquet. In 2016 certificates of achievement were presented to 20 junior members and in 2017 eighteen junior members were awarded certificates at our annual meeting.

These women will serve as the 2017 Michigan Angus Auxiliary officers and committee chairs. Pictured seated from left are Julie Thelen, Saline; Kris Boehmer, Charlotte; and Sharon Vaassen, Ann Arbor. Standing from left are Lori Pillars, Martin; Janel Horrocks-Boehmer, Williamston; Ricka Boehmer, Williamston; and Nancy Thelen, Saline. Not pictured is Rachael Vaassen from Dexter. 26 www.michiganangus.org

MICHIGAN ANGUS AUXILIARY

The first Michigan Angus Queen was crowned on July 30, 1967. Since that time 48 other young women have represented Michigan Angus breeders in this capacity. In 2016 two young women stepped up to compete for the honor and Amanda Kosal was crowned Miss Michigan Angus at the Michigan Awards Banquet. Kavina Johnson represented us as Angus Ambassador. Amanda is the daughter of Jeremy and Michelle Kosal of Deckerville. Kavina Johnson was crowned 2017 Miss Michigan Angus at the awards banquet in March 2017. Kavina is the daughter of Kevin and Heidi Johnson of Quincy. The Auxiliary started a new award in 2014. Junior members who exhibited any Champion Angus Female at a county, district, regional or state show were eligible to enter a drawing for a show halter. Jaycie Brown from Pinckney received the award in 2015 and Kollin Johnson was the 2016 recipient. Since 1967 the Michigan Angus Auxiliary has sponsored a total of 85 Michigan juniors who have participated in the National Showmanship Contest. In 2015, Rachel Reid represented Michigan. Rachel is the daughter of Chuck and Linda Reid of Eaton Rapids. In 2016, Kollin Johnson and Alexandria Schut represented Michigan. Kollin is the son of Kevin and Heidi Johnson of Quincy, and Alexandria is the daughter of John and Kara Schut of Belding. Over the years, many women have given numerous hours of their time to the Auxiliary serving as officers, committee members and chairpersons, as well as helping out wherever needed. Several members have also been active in the American Angus Auxiliary, serving on various committees and as officers. Patti Rae, Lois Foster, and Nancy Thelen served as president of the American Angus Auxiliary in 1981, 1990, and 2008 respectively. Michigan has had the privilege of hosting the national auxiliary luncheons in 1968, 1981, 1990, and 2008. A heartfelt thank you is extended to everyone who has helped the Michigan Angus Auxiliary achieve its mission over the past 50 years. We look forward to working with Michigan Angus enthusiasts as we continue to embrace the tradition!

Thank You

The Michigan Junior Angus Association has accomplished many things since it was organized in 1966. It has provided leadership opportunities to many youth, shared some of Michigan’s programs with other states, received many awards at the National Junior Angus Show, as well as national recognition of its members, advisors and programs. Several Michigan members have also served on the National Jr. Angus Board. Since 1998, Michigan Juniors have also been recognized for their outstanding involvement as they have received $45,000 in scholarships from the Angus Foundation, plus many thousand more from the American Angus Auxiliary. Michigan has a lot to be proud of and a rich heritage with their junior association. Thank you to everyone who has helped the Michigan Jr. Angus Association thrive for the past 50 years.
