President’s Message John Finke Greetings! The year started with a fantastic annual meeting in Lafayette...great crowd, great speakers, great food and LOTS of enthusiasm! Past president Bob Dragani (and others)wanted to change things up a bit and create an annual meeting that would accomplish exactly what it did...enthusiasm and excitement! The auction for directory pages and IN Angus News covers smashed any known records! What a fun day.... what a great IAA event! Thanks to those that planned and carried through with all the details! Our AAA and CAB speakers brought a perspective that any of our members could learn from....be they large or small herds.....active in the show ring or commercial. Always looking for more ideas to expound on this years’ festivities.... anyone want to step up to the plate and volunteer to help plan our next annual meeting? Let me know. We are now in full swing with our committee ideas that have been planned and developed so far....the committees are full of dedicated IN Angus members that aren’t afraid to throw out new ideas and see where they land. It is so much fun to watch the creative minds plan activities that will benefit all of our membership! Speaking of membership, you only have a few days to pay your membership so you are included in the 2016 directory....the one that will go to our AAA visitors in November!..... ,,,,,and plans for that NATIONAL meeting being hosted are well under way! Most plans have been carried out by AAA staff, but Cody Sankey has stepped up to cover all the bases we need to cover (or back-up) to make this national meeting memorable! Make plans to visit Indy in early November! Summer shows and Preview are rapidly approaching, good luck to all involved. The juniors and their advisors are planning ways to include those that don’t show but still want to become involved. Wow, it is an honor watching our junior members excel in 14 | Indiana Angus News

so many different ways! Thanks to the juniors, their parents and families and all the other adult members that participate and help! So, without rambling on, THANKS to our members and those that have stepped up in any way to volunteer and help....what an honor to help lead you through this 2016 journey and beyond!

In Passing David Blough Taken from The Elkhart Truth. David Frederick Blough, 64, was born in Goshen on June 20, 1951, to Dorothy and Duane Blough. The Goshen resident lost his life in a farm accident Monday, March 7. David graduated from Jefferson High School in 1969 and attended Goshen College for two years. After transferring to Purdue University, he graduated with honors in 1973 in the School of Animal Science. As a member of the Purdue Collegiate Dairy Judging Team in 1972, he received top 10 recognition in each of the national contests. On July 7, 1973, he married Michelle Bullard. She survives along with his two sisters, Trudy (Rick) Racine of Ozawkie, Kan., and Dr. Jan (J.C.) Haynes of Cleveland, Miss.; a daughter, Dr. Emilie Blough, and a son, Craig (fiancĂŠe Jessica Herschberger) Blough, all of Goshen; and daughter-in-law and husband, Cara (Derek) and Joel Brovont, and four granddaughters of West Lafayette. Also surviving are his aunt, Shirley Hall; uncle John (Margaret) Shoup; three nieces and two nephews and their families; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother Craig Thomas; aunt Janice April 2016 | 15

Robinson; aunt Marian Blough Krebs; aunt and uncle Marjorie and Hugh Woosley; and his son, Derek F. Blough. David served on the board of directors of Farm Bureau Inc. He was a lifelong member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren; a 40-year member of the Elkhart County Dairy Advisory Board; and was a member of the Jefferson Township Advisory Board; the National Dairy Shrine; the Indiana Holstein Association; and the national breed associations for Guernsey, Ayrshire, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn and Angus Association. He was on the list of accredited judges for the National Holstein Association, USA. Previously, David served as a 4-H leader for the Elkhart County Dairy Club for 20 years and influenced many dairy farmers and professionals throughout his tenure as an adviser. He served as a 4-H adult leader president, a member of 4-H Corporation, and of the 4-H Expansion and Review Committee. He and Michelle coached Indiana agricultural quiz bowl teams and Holstein Association, Ayrshire Association and Guernsey Association national quiz bowl teams for 20 years. David was a problem solver and knowledgeable about farming, the dairy industry and just about any other topic. “Uncle Dave was always guaranteed to provide an interesting conversation. He had an uncanny ability to remember details about any animal, person or circumstance and his photographic ability to remember dairy animals of all breeds and their pedigrees was unparalleled. Most of all, David enjoyed people, interesting details and great cattle. David was truly a one-of-a-kind individual and will be missed by his family and all who have known him throughout life. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 11, at Goshen City Church of the Brethren, 203 N. Fifth St., Goshen, where a 1 p.m. funeral service will be conducted. Burial will follow in Neff Cemetery in Goshen. John Stewart Taken from Grilliland Howe Funeral Home. John Arthur Stewart, 96, died in Greensburg, IN on March 5, 2016 he was a Christian, farmer, seedsman and purebred livestock breeder. He was born at home on May 5, 1919 in Decatur County to the late Arthur Carter and Mary Robbins Stewart. He married his college sweetheart, Alberta Jeannette Densford, on March 14, 1942 in Greensburg, IN. After 71+ years of marriage, and for the last decade of Alberta’s life during which time John was a devoted and loving caregiver to her, Alberta died on February 8, 2013. He graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Agriculture in 1941. After three and one-half years of military service in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, he went into partnership with his brother, Gilman, and father, Arthur, in the family farming business now known as Stewart Seeds. Stewart received an Honorary Doctorate of Agriculture Degree from Purdue University in 1974. His portrait was hung in the Purdue Livestock Hall of Fame in 1972. He was twice awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor awarded by the Governor of Indiana; Stewart’s two awards were distinctive because Stewart received them from governors of both political parties. John often talked that his philosophy of life and farming was to leave the land better than he found it, and our world is a better place because John Arthur Stewart passed by here. Also important in John’s life were those people whose lives he touched – customers and employees at Stewart Seeds, neighbors, and church and Purdue friends. He took great delight in spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. He received numerous other awards throughout his life, and was a member, director and officer of many organizations including Farm Bureau, American Legion, VFW, Decatur County Rural Couples Club, South Park Cemetery Board, American Soybean Association, Indiana Crop Improvement Board and Purdue Ag Alumni April 2016 | 17

Board. He served for 12 years on the Purdue University Board of Trustees, and for 34 years as a director of Decatur County Bank. Stewart was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher and in other positions of leadership; served as president of American Baptist Churches of Indiana and on the board of American Baptist Churches USA. Survivors include his daughters Barbara Stewart (Patricia Archbold), Montpelier, VT; Carol (Barry) Wood, Collinsville, TX; Janet (Steve) Gunn, Greensburg, IN; and sons Paul A. Stewart (Susan Rhodes), Indianapolis, IN; and Jim Stewart (Susan Sturges), Greensburg, IN; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Marietta, who died in infancy; Elizabeth Ann (Sheldon) Smith; and Rachel Geneva Stump (Robert G. Stump of Winchester survives); and a brother, Gilman Carter Stewart (Virginia). A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Greensburg on April 16, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 209 W. Washington St., Greensburg, IN 47240; Our Hospice of Decatur/Shelby, 1201 N. Lincoln St, Greensburg, IN 47240 (ourhospice.org); Purdue Foundation for the Livestock Judging Team Endowment, 403 West Wood St., West Lafayette, IN 47907 (Giving.Purdue.edu/InMemoryofJohnStewart); or the charity of your choice.

Doc’s Clipboard Doc Howell This week the Cincinnati Reds began broadcasting their spring training games. The phrase “hope springs eternal” applies to every baseball team each spring. Baseball fans can enjoy just watching the play and accomplishment of the talented athletes, but eventually keeping score gets complicated. The science of cybernetics has changed how a successful team of players is assembled and reworked to win games, pennants and even series that determine championships. The players that excel statistically are paid amazing salaries. One of the first magazine articles that I ever remember reading was in The Farm Quarterly. This colorful, large format magazine was published by F and W Publishing of Cincinnati from 1946 until 1970 when the company was sold. The article was on the work of Dr. Jan Bonsma of South Africa. The animal scientist believed that cattle fertility and productivity could be predicted by visual appraisal. Cattle have been evaluated for centuries by appearance, but the idea that was memorable was that “man must measure. You can’t improve what you can’t measure.” We started with tape measures and scales to measure growth. Then carcass evaluation measured muscling and cutability. Eventually intramuscular fat became appreciated for adding flavor and contributing to the predictability of producing a “pleasurable eating experience.” Some evaluation methods test tenderness. Feeding equipment systems that measure individual feed consumption and then calculate feed efficiency are becoming more widely used. Production record programs help us evaluate conception rate both for a bull and his daughters. Measuring birth, weaning, yearling and mature weights result in sire proof numbers that allow selection of a sire that can change the production of a herd based on the needs and goals of the operator. Herd trait profiles allow an owner to know where the cowherd stands and these can guide bull choices. Baseball team managers spend weeks evaluating the talent and capabilities of their “herd”. Decisions must be made. Who will help us accomplish our goals? What do we 20 | Indiana Angus News

need to add to our talent pool? Who is too limited to be valuable to us in our quest to win? Is there a player that we can afford that will help us accomplish our goals? There are cattle traits that greatly effect profitability that do not appear on Angus sire proofs yet. Foot scores, so far, are not included, but evaluations are being done and bull studs are trying to publicize the foot traits of their sires. Longevity data has not been included in black Angus proofs yet. Foot scoring guides are available from the American Angus Association. They can be downloaded over the internet. Herds that enroll in Maternal Plus will have herd profiles available to help illustrate the status and trends of production traits of a herd. The data submitted on why and when a cow leaves the herd will help build the data that will be needed to calculate longevity scores for our cattle. Those cattle breeders that calve early in the calendar year will soon make their selections on which bulls will be used to improve next years calf crop. There are bulls that can tremendously increase productivity. I hope your choices all help you have a pennant-winning year.

From the Boardroom Doc Howell The Board of Directors of the American Angus Association recommended, and the delegates to the 2015 Annual Convention of Delegates passed, three amendments to the bylaws that effect who can serve as an “eligible voting member” and the timing of the nomination period. “Eligible voting members are those able to nominate, be nominated, vote or to be elected in the annual election of delegates. To be considered eligible and to participate in the election process individuals must meet ALL of the following requirements within the preceeding 12 months from when the nomination period begins:

• Active regular or life membership • 18 years of age or older • Register at least one animal OR complete a minimum level of business with the

Assocciation or Angus Genetics Inc. The dollar amount specified by the Board is $250, exclusive of membership fees, merchandise or other exclusions.”

The nomination period is now 60 days instead of 90 days which was formerly the nomination time period. These changes were passed to help ensure that voting members have a vested interest in the angus business (emphasis by author), and to allow staff to conduct the ballot process in a timely fashion prior to the meeting at the National Angus Convention. Several months ago the American Angus Association began to gather data on foot conformation by scoring feet on cattle based on a scoring system with drawings to illustrate the scores. The scorecard is available from the Angus.org website for downloading. The foot project is under AGI. If you have questions on submission or need further explanations please contact Dan Moser, Kelli Retallick, Gayla Fuston or Jerry Cassaday. 22 | Indiana Angus News

Author Opinion: It had been realized that someone, or a group, could purchase several memberships and control the meeting without having any connection to the Angus business other than the cost of dues. The rules for qualification were discussed and those adopted were presented to the convention. The qualifications are not difficult to achieve for anyone with even a minimal involvement in the Angus business. Foot scoring is not an exact science. Like so many other actions, we do not improve if we do not practice. If you study the score sheet, you puzzle over the differences between a 3, or a 4, or a 6, or a 7. I think if beginners (like me) would start by only using the odd number scores, accuracy and consistency could be developed. The comment was made by Dr. Moser that cattle should be scored on their worst foot. The difference in foot angle or depth of heel varies from front to back foot so it might be helpful to score both front and back. The important thing is to get started and not become frustrated because deciding between a 3 and a 4 seems frustrating.

Thank-You Rob & Becky Knott On Saturday, February 13, 2016, the 3 of us gratefully accepted the Indiana Angus Association Family of the Year Award. We want to thank the Executive Committee for selecting us to receive this honor and extend this honor to the many other family members that help make this possible. If you walk by our stalls at a show or visit Knott’s Landing Angus you will see family members present. The interest for being involved and advocates for Angus Cattle started many years ago. Thank you to our parents Bill and Arlene Knott and the late Rich and Sue Ward that guided us into becoming who we are today. Many of you know Rich and Sue from their involvement in the cattle industry along with their 7 children. A special thank you to Jean and Mark Oneal the backbone of our support at Knott’s Landing Angus. Our cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles that are always willing to be our herdsmen at shows, our hired hands at the Landing while we are on the show circuit or around the ring supporters. In addition, we have been blessed with the one that continues this family tradition Kallie Anne Knott. She has taken a cow that was her sister Katie Knott Decker’s show heifer in 2004, which was purchased out of a sale hosted by Maple Lane Angus, and managed by their Uncle Jack Ward and as of today has developed a small herd of 8 Angus Cows. The joint effort continues as she collaborates with family and cattle advocates to help determine breeding, selling and showing decisions. In conclusion God has given us many blessings as a family and we are thankful for the award but most of all the many people that make up Indiana Angus that have provided our family in guidance as we continue to grow. Past: 1976 - Forty (40) Years Ago – was a very interesting time to be involved with the Angus Breed in Indiana. IAA membership peaked at an all-time high of 408 in 1975 and IAA celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 1976. The growth of the Indiana Junior Angus Association, the Indiana Angus Preview Shows, and the National Junior Angus Show has led to increasing demand for Angus cattle to fit the show cattle market. The show ring influenced the breeding decisions of the mid-70s and continues to do so in Indiana today. Present: Today – The beef cattle industry - and particularly the Angus breed - is much more focused on producing cattle that perform well in all phases of the industry. Phenotype and structural soundness continue to be critical factors in breeding and buying decisions – as they should be. But tools continue to be developed by the industry that can help serious breeders produce superior performing Angus cattle. The challenge for the breeders of today - is to become more informed about and seriously consider utilizing these tools in their herds. AAA, IAA and WCIAA are all available to help accomplish this. WCIAA offers many opportunities for members and non-members alike - including:  WCIAA Winter Educational Meetings – on topics of interest to all beef cattle producers – regardless of breed, and / or registered or commercial operations;  WCIAA Newsletter / ADVS Program - newsletters with paid advertising support are sent via US Mail to WCIAA members at their homes at least six (6) times per year:  WCIAA Summer Tour / Field Day Program - held annually each summer. 2016 date, time and location TBA. We hope many of you will plan to attend in 2016. Future: WCIAA members and its leadership team – whose contact information is provided in the header above – plan to do all we can to promote the Angus breed in Indiana – with fun, fellowship and education along the way. WCIAA Membership: Our membership goal for 2016 is 100 or more total members. 2015 membership was 101– up from 11 in 2005 (900%). We hope YOU will join us. Annual Dues: - $15.00 for First Year Members - $25.00 for Regular Members. We need dues paid by April 15th for your name to be included on the WCIAA Pages of the annual Indiana Angus Directory. Please contact Jack Sweeney at 317-844-5895 to join or for additional information.

Cody Sankey Selected for Young Cattlemen’s Conference Cody Sankey of Economy, Ind., will represent the American Angus Association and the business breed during the 2016 Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC), hosted June 1-9 by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). The annual event is considered the premier leadership development program within the cattle industry, and the Angus Foundation is proud to sponsor one attendee each year. Throughout the weeklong experience, YCC participants travel the country to witness all levels of beef production, hone their leadership skills and gain a better understanding of policy issues affecting cattlemen and women. This year marks the 37th annual YCC, and to qualify, an individual must be nominated by one of NCBA’s affiliate members, be between the ages of 25 and 50, and be an NCBA member. “The Young Cattlemen’s Conference is truly an eye-opening experience for many future leaders in the beef business,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We’re grateful to our donors who make sponsorships, like this one, possible for deserving young people. Cody Sankey will represent the Angus breed proudly and bring back lessons to help move our business forward.” A lifelong Angus breeder and Association member, Sankey grew up in Council Grove, Kan., on his family’s ranching operation, Sankey’s 6N Ranch. He was an active member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), and continues his involvement today by serving as the second vice-president of the Indiana Angus Association. He was also elected president of the South Eastern Indiana Angus District Association. April 2016 | 37

“As a member of the largest beef breed in the country, it’s important for us to lead and be involved,” Sankey says. “Being involved in the YCC program will allow me to submerse myself into areas of our industry that I’m not as familiar with, and the issues that will impact me as a young producer.” Sankey serves as the key accounts manager for BioZyme Inc., representing the entire United States. He attended Oklahoma State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s in ruminant nutrition. Sankey was also part of the 2001 National Champion Livestock Judging Team. Before his current role with BioZyme, Sankey managed Michigan State University’s Purebred Beef Cattle center and coached livestock judging. He and his wife, Lindsay, remain involved with the family’s Angus herd and travel the country attending shows and events. “I look forward to sharing the knowledge and experience I gain from YCC with my fellow Angus breeders so we can continue to position Angus cattle as industry leaders for generations to come,” Sankey says. The 2016 YCC tour begins in Denver, Colo., with a comprehensive overview of the industry. According to NCBA, the group will take an in-depth look at many of the issues affecting the beef industry, how the organization addresses these issues, and an industry outlook report from CattleFax. Participants will then travel to JBS Five Rivers’ Kuner Feedyard, one of the nation’s largest cattle feeding operations, with a onetime capacity of 100,000-plus head in northern Colorado. The group will also tour the JBS Greeley facility, one of the nation’s largest beef packing and processing plants. After leaving Colorado, the group heads east to visit the Chicago Board of Trade and OSI Inc., one of the nation’s premier beef patty manufacturers. Then it’s off to Washington, D.C., to meet with legislators and hear from federal official who make decisions affecting agriculture. Visit the NCBA website to learn more about YCC, or view a list of previous Angus representatives at www.angusfoundation.org.

A Visit With Calf #16, “Speedy”

They call me Speedy for two reasons. (1) I like to run fast around the barn lot. (2) My father is SAV Ten Speed. I am the oldest calf and heifer this year at Beaver Ridge. So let me tell you about the calves. I am the only Ten Speed calf here. (I think the Watkins should have more of my family) There are some really nice SAV Harvestors and SAV Renown bulls. These guys look big and powerful to me. You’ll want to check out the nice International heifers. The SAV Birthstone calves are coming on strong! My best buddy is #46, a nice heifer by SAV North Dakota. At this time, there are 8 heifers and 5 bulls, I sure hope we heifers keep the lead!! Make plans this spring to see my buddies and me. I heard last year some of you missed out and did not get here before the 2015 calf crop was gone. Of course I think we are better than last year’s, but then I might be a little prejudice. * #16 is a Jan. 1, 2016 heifer by SAV Ten Speed which is sired by the very popular AAA Ten X and her dam is by Rito 707 of Ideal 3407 7075.
